2014/15 UK Basketball - :pours40out: (1 Viewer)

I hope UK plays this well on Tuesday.
Platoon system will definitely get a test on Tuesday.
I'm going to give the platoon system an "A" on that test.

Self was effusive in his praise of UK in the post-game. He was even smiling a bit at how well UK played. He centered his praise on UK's interior defense: so many big, long players wanting to guard people made KU's offense not resemble a team offense.

I think KU just got punched in the face and weren't ready to react. They are better than they showed last night, and UK will struggle against some teams this year.

I think the way to attack UK, is to have a physical presence in the post, but then have a few outside shooters who can hit 3's. It will take a great shooting night, but those happen from time to time.

For me, there are a few advantages to the platoon - first, everyone knows they are going to play, so they don't have to force anything trying to make something happen to impress. They also know they can play with a burst of energy for a few minutes, rather than have to grind out 10-12 minutes at a time - that creates the "waves of reinforcements" feeling that will wear most teams out. Also, by playing everyone, it allows players to have a bad night, but not have it impact the entire game - its going to be very unlikely that nobody can get things going on that team. The last advantage is the contrast in the teams - 1st unit is bigger, more physical, 2nd unit is quicker more athletic - it keeps teams from settling into a rhythm offensively or defensively, and forces the "elite" teams to prepare to face two different squads. (Teams that don't have a prayer against UK are only going to prepare to play their game, only teams that think they can beat UK will have to prepare differently).

I think Cal will continue to work with it - I know he has played different combinations in the last 10 minutes of the pre-season games, and first couple of regular season games. He has gone with his ball-handlers - Harrisons and Ulis with a couple of bigs. I am sure they work with different combinations in practice to see who works well together - reports are that there are a lot of 5-on-5 scrimmages at practice - because they have the bodies to go at it at a high level.

The key to the platoon system is Ulis - without that 2nd point guard to run the 2nd unit, its more of a rotation, than a platoon.

UK just embarrassed a very good Kansas team. Some team will get lucky and go off like a canon on Kentucky this year, but I'm not betting that's gonna happen until maybe the game against Texas. Until then, I don't see any team getting close to beating us. To much talent, to much depth, to good at playing defense. UK had 11 blocked shots, KU had 11 shots from the field in the first half. That's just crazy.

UK (3-0) has outscored opponents 114-55 after halftime, thanks largely to devastating defense. Teams are shooting just 24.2 percent — and only 4 of 21 from 3-point range — against the Cats in the second half.

"You can see where you do start to get in their legs," said assistant John Robic, who stood in for head coach John Calipari to preview Friday's home game against Boston University. "With our length and our athletic ability, there's no reason why we can't be a really good defensive team.
This is why its going to be tough to beat Kentucky - even when Kentucky has an off-night on the offensive end.

The team that beats Kentucky is going to have to slow the game down, and hit some 3's. I don't think any team can afford to run with UK for the course of a game. Or, drive the lane early and get a couple of Bigs in foul trouble - obviously it won't have an immediate impact with the guys on the 2nd unit able to step in - but if you can wear them out a bit, teams might have a better chance in the 2nd half.

UK will probably only be an underdog once the remaining way - at Louisville.
No way UofL beats UK. I would love love love to see it happen, but no way. I saw what UK did to Kansas, and UofL is a glorified AND1 team at this point in the season. Unless something significant happens like injuries, or UofL really gels as a team, I see nothing less than a blowout.

I still think all bets are off for this game. Harrell will be the best player on the floor, and the team with the best player always has a chance to win.

One more game under the belt where things didn't go well. Yes we won, but Poythress being out changed things up. Boston's best player had a huge night, but in the end it didn't matter. Kentucky is just too deep and talented to stay down for long. I will say that I do see a couple of teams matching up well with us. One is Texas, the other would be, possibly Florida. We will see how well we play against them. GO CATS!

Montana at 17 with 6:51 left and I'm still not sold they will reach 20. They had 11 at half time and 11 with just under 10:00 to play.

eta: jinx...ran off 5 quick ones to get to 21

I missed the game but this was a team that lost by 15 to Grand Canyon, who UK beat in the opener. They also were supposed to play Buffalo on Friday, and were snowed out, so they were understandably overmatched...

Yeah it was a mismatch of epic proportions, but the focus on defense was impressive. It took Montana State nearly 2 minutes to get the ball past the half court line. UK missed their first 11 shots I think and never did really get it going offensively, but that defense is smothering. The rotations are so much better than last year when they help.

Montana State scored 78 points on UCLA.
They started a Center who is listed at 6'7"

'Nuff said.

It is nice to see Booker start to find his touch - although it looks like Aaron Harrison is struggling from the outside now. Lyles looks like he is auditioning for the NBA - with five 3-point attempts. That should not be his shot - even as a SF, in a blow-out. Dakari Johnson is looking like one of the most-improved players on the team - he benefits from being the primary Big on the 2nd unit, but he is making the most of his minutes.

Perhaps Kentucky could have scheduled a little tougher competition...not, sure how this helps get them ready for good competition or even conference play.

5 of the next 7 games are against tough competition (undefeated Providence, #7 Texas, #5 UNC, #22UCLA, #6 Louisville)

Need a few confidence builders along the way. These last couple of games have been very good for Booker and hopefully will allow Lyles to work through his funk...

ETA: I know you said you didn't get to watch the last game, so I'm guessing the comment about Lyles was from the box score. They had a zone sagging so deep in the lane that he almost had to take those 3's. All were good looks and nothing forced...that's just what the D was giving. Plus we were killing the offensive glass so it was almost like throw it up and let the bigs go get it.

Man these games do nothing for UofL or UK. NOTHING! I would think other than just playing someone, UK would be better off scrimmaging each other.

My little girl reached a milestone at her school today so I offered to take her to the game tonight as a reward.

She declined.

I'm failing as a parent (forget the fact she set a record on the reading program they use)

Preliminary test to the bigger run of Texas, UCLA, UNC, and Louisville went well. Providence came in averaging 74 points, and scored 38.

I don't think UK loses a game in the regular season - and probably makes it to the Elite 8 without a significant scare. The game they are most likely to lose, if they lose this year will be the national semi-final game.

The Providence game was tougher than any so far. There was talent there and they pushed UK a little. Texas is next and we may suffer our first defeat against them. I watched most of the Texas vs UConn game. UConn is one team I hope we don't meet again for some time. Boatright is flat out a baller. Texas beats them on a last second shot. Texas is sky high right now with confidence. They won't come into Rupp Arena scared of UK. That is good for us. And personally I feel a loss this early in the season would be a good thing. Teach us to play hard and tough every game. Not just walk thru like some of the early bunny teams.

Defense was unreal again. WCS absolutely shut down one of the top scorers in the nation and Ulis really turned the game around late in the first half with his on-the-ball D. Providence's point guard had 10 turnovers.

However, the offense looked pretty ugly . I thought the Harrisons did way to much standing with the ball 30 ft from the basket a la last year. Took forever to get into sets against the zone. Lee was not good, Lyles was invisible. 8 of 17 from the FT line probably won't cut it against the likes of Texas, UNC, UCLA and Louisville.

Still 13. Moved down to 12.5 for a short time then went right back up.

I think UK wins this game by 20 plus. Free money.

This why I don't see a WV game on the horizon for this team - defensively they bring it every game, so even when they can't hit a shot, they can win games.

I'm a believer in the platoon system for this personnel because of how strong it makes them defensively. No one has to conserve energy because no one is expected to play 38 minutes. Everyone can go hard on defense on every possession. The interior defense is so good, TE perimeter defense can take some chances to force turnovers and move shooters off the three-point line.

UK beats Texas. Kansas, Arizona, Texas, Kentucky. That's my final four right now. It may change as the year goes on, but all of those teams will get better as the year goes on. And I saw Texas as a team that could hang with us due to their size. But even that wasn't enough to defeat UK. Next few games will be interesting.

UK's defense is obviously insanely good, but their first shot offense is pretty atrocious. Pretty sure Texas wins that game if Taylor was healthy. (Felix is fat and stinks at basketball) They sure wouldn't have turned the ball over 22 times.

I'm sure UK fans are encouraged to see them beat a team that they couldn't just totally overwhelm with size, (and they should be) but their offense is still a major problem.

Nah, if UK played halfway decent on offense tonight, they would have won by 25. Taylor isn't that much of a difference maker. He would have been subjected to the same defense.

He's their starting PG and their backup is a 5'11 chubby kid. Not saying Taylor is a future NBA all star or anything, but come on. Of course he'd be subjected to the same defense. But he's clearly much more equipped to try and handle it. (If for no other reason than he's a decent enough athlete to not be totally overpowered by the on-ball pressure)

What is "decent on offense" for Kentucky? Even in the Kansas game, they shot below 50% from the field 6-18 from 3 and 62% from the line. (And that's with a lot of fast break opportunities due to Kansas crapping their pants). They're not a good first shot offensive team. Obviously they're absolute beasts on the glass and will create plenty of points with their transition game, but if UK fans are waiting for them to start consistently making shots, I think they're going to be waiting a while.

Not saying they're not great. They are. But lets keep some perspective here.

They haven't played up to their potential yet on offense, and still lead the NCAA in scoring margin. When they are hitting on all cylinders, they will dust top ten teams by 25+. They are scary talented. Wait til they gel.

Maybe you're right. I don't think you are, (in the sense that they'll become an offense juggernaut) but I guess we'll see. They only have 1 more top 10 team on their schedule (Louisville) but they'll have every opportunity to prove it in March.

Yeah, playing 3 of the top 6 teams in the country non-conference is pretty soft. Throw in North Carolina, and UCLA on top of that. Lol! You're a hater! Toughest Non-con sched in the country!

Not sure how who they've already played has anything to do with what I said. I didn't say their schedule was soft. I said that we really won't see them "dust top 10 teams by 25+" until the post season (because Louisville is the only one left on their schedule) The Kansas game was certainly a dusting, but that was much more about their defensive performance and KU's horrible strategy than UK's offensive ability. (Which is what I thought we were discussing here).

Calling someone a "hater" is pretty much the most immature way possible to try and win an argument (not that I was trying to pick an argument) , so if that's what you're going to go with, more power to you.

UNC and UCLA are both historic programs but neither one is a great team this year. They both have 2 losses already (although to be fair, one of UCLA's loses was to UNC). Iowa just beat UNC in their own building.

The point is, UK doesn't have to have a great offense to win games. There is no argument. I don't have to defend anything. I want to see UK and Duke or Arizona play. Neither team will be able to hang for 40 minutes. Kentucky will only continue to get better as the season rolls on. The refs controlled the tempo tonight with 51 fouls called. Texas is the biggest team UK will face all year. UK played like ####, and still won by 12. Doesn't bode well for other teams.
