2014 NFL Free Agents (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

The Palm Beach Post says not to be surprised if the Dolphins "go hard" after free agent LT Branden Albert.

After giving up a league-high 58 sacks this season, adding talent to the offensive line should be the Dolphins' top priority. Head coach Joe Philbin reportedly wanted to trade a second-round pick to acquire Albert last offseason, but since-fired GM Jeff Ireland wanted to give Jonathan Martin time to develop at the position. That decision backfired in explosively humiliating fashion for all parties involved. Albert, PFF's No. 28 tackle this season, is going to be asking for around $8-$9 million per season -- the going rate for quality blind-side protectors.

ESPN Cleveland suggests free agent QB Rex Grossman as a target for the Browns.

Grossman has spent the past five seasons -- one in Houston and the last four in Washington -- with new Browns OC Kyle Shanahan. The only quarterback that appears to be safe in Cleveland is Brian Hoyer. Shanahan liked to keep three quarterbacks while with the Redskins, so he could team Grossman up with Hoyer and a rookie. Grossman wouldn't be a candidate to start.

Rotoworld:

Former NFL scout and director of pro personnel Louis Riddick believes Jared Allen will be this year's most overrated free agent.

Allen hasn't missed a game since 2007 and has recorded 45.5 sacks in the last three seasons. But he'll turn 32 in April and Riddick envisions the "wall" coming in a hurry. "With Jared, I see a player with diminishing get-off quickness, an inability to win on the edge against quality competition without benefiting from the QB holding the ball too long, marginal stamina as an every-down end and an average point-of-attack run defender that does not play with a consistent level of competitiveness," said Riddick. The Vikings are not expected to make Allen an offer.

A source tells 1500ESPN.com that Matt Casssel intends to void his contract by Friday's deadline, therefore becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Cassel was set to earn $3.7 million in 2014. His decision to leave that kind of money on the table is surprising, and suggests he thinks he can land starter's money somewhere. That somewhere could end up being back in Minnesota, perhaps as a bridge starter to a rookie they select with the No. 8 overall pick in May's draft. Once Cassel officially becomes a free agent, he'll immediately vault into the top part of our rankings. Michael Vick, Josh McCown, Josh Freeman, Shaun Hill and Chad Henne currently occupy the first five spots in an ugly quarterback free agency class.

Rotoworld:

ESPN Vikings blogger Ben Goessling suggests San Francisco as a possible landing spot for free agent RB Toby Gerhart.

On the surface, it makes sense as Gerhart played for Jim Harbaugh at Stanford and 30-year-old Frank Gore is slowing down. But Kendall Hunter has far more upside than Gerhart and the Niners seem optimistic on Marcus Lattimore. With tons of the Niners' young core players in need of contract extensions, giving Gerhart market value wouldn't make much sense. He's more valuable to the Vikings right now as a reliable caddy to Adrian Peterson.

Free agent Eric Decker would "love" to re-sign with the Broncos, but admits the situation is out of his control.

It's the diplomatic tone all smart free agents strike. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Denver plans to let Decker test the open market, meaning he's all but certain to be playing elsewhere next season. The "win-now" Broncos simply don't have the cap space to lock up Decker with Demaryius and Julius Thomas both entering contract years.

Rotoworld:

ESPN Colts blogger Mike Wells believes it's "highly unlikely" free agent Ahmad Bradshaw is re-signed.

Donald Brown is a higher priority amongst the Colts' in-house free agents, while Vick Ballard (torn ACL) expects to be ready for OTAs. Trent Richardson is "set" as the Colts' "starter." Bradshaw was effective before a neck injury ended his 2013 in Week 3, but simply can't be trusted to stay healthy. Although he's still only 28 (in March) Bradshaw is unlikely to find any guaranteed money in free agency.

Speaking Tuesday, Broncos executive VP John Elway hinted he has every intention of letting free agent Knowshon Moreno reach the open market.

"We'll see how things flesh out," Elway said of Moreno's Broncos future. "We have some young backs. ... It's a position we have a lot of good competition." The Broncos have Montee Ball, C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman to fall back on if Moreno walks. Although Moreno should be affordable — almost every running back is — he's likely played his last snap as a Bronco.

This doesn't make sense to me. I can't see Cassel going anywhere else to make 3.7 million, he might possibly be a starter somewhere, but doesn't have many options better than Minnesota. Even if Minnesota drafts a QB at 8, it could very well be their 2nd or even 3rd choice giving Cassel an opportunity to start this year over them.

Rotoworld:

ESPN Vikings blogger Ben Goessling guesses the Vikings will re-sign free agent Jerome Simpson on a one-year deal.
Before Cordarrelle Patterson Dynasty owners freak out, Simpson would be brought back as a strict third wideout, allowing Greg Jennings to move to the slot in three-wide formations. Simpson certainly won't be expensive. He has a possible suspension stemming from a DUI looming over his head and has produced just one touchdown over the last two seasons.

According to ESPN 49ers reporter Bill Williamson, the team "would like to keep" free agent Anquan Boldin.
Same goes for free agent S Donte Whitner and K Phil Dawson, per Williamson. The Niners are currently sitting on just over $7 million in salary cap space with a number of youngsters to extend before their rookie contracts expire. Ideally, San Francisco would find an alpha-type No. 1 receiver in May's draft.

Rotoworld:

ESPN Dolphins reporter James Walker considers free agent Dustin Keller re-signing with Miami "unlikely."

Keller's gruesome August knee injury resulted in a torn ACL, MCL, PCL as well as a dislocation. He had to watch as Charles Clay broke out for a 69/759/6 line, grabbing the 2014 starting role in the process. Keller, who will turn 30 years old in September, will have to prove his health before getting a deal in free agency. The injury was severe enough that his Week 1 status remains in doubt.

ESPN's Adam Caplan suggested on NFL Insiders Thursday that free agent DE Michael Johnson will command "maybe $10 million a year" on the open market.

Bengals coaches want Johnson back, per Caplan, but Cincinnati won't franchise tag him for the second straight year and seems unlikely to commit long term to Johnson after locking up Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins, and using a 2013 second-round pick on Margus Hunt. Johnson is athletic enough to drop into coverage and rush with his hand up, so he figures to be pursued by both 4-3 and 3-4 teams. That "scheme versatility" will boost his market worth.
When making his rounds at the Senior Bowl last month, ESPN Falcons blogger Vaughn McClure was informed free agent RE Michael Johnson wouldn't mind "coming home" and playing for the Falcons.

Johnson is from Alabama but played his college ball at Georgia Tech and was down there as recently as last spring taking classes. The Falcons' biggest need areas lie in the trenches on the defensive and offensive lines. They were 29th in the league in sacks (32) last season. Johnson is unlikely to return to Cincinnati due to his price tag. The Falcons also don't have a ton of cash to play with, but teams can make things work. Johnson is our No. 2 free-agent DE.

The New York Daily News reports the Jets "covet" free agent wide receivers Jeremy Maclin and Emmanuel Sanders.
The Jets are expected to express interest in fellow free agent Eric Decker, but it's believed he'll land elsewhere. Gang Green knows it needs to upgrade/overhaul its receiving corps. The Jets were 31st in passing this past season. Maclin could come relatively cheap on a one-year deal due to the fact he's recovering from a second ACL tear. He's our No. 2 free agent receiver behind Decker, while Sanders checks in at No. 9. The Jets have nearly $30 million in cap space.

Rotoworld:

The Boston Herald doesn't expect the Patriots to offer "much more" than $2 million over two years to free agent LeGarrette Blount.

This falls right in line with what we'd expect, as well. Blount is a pure early-down bruiser who offers nothing in the passing game. New England also has Stevan Ridley and Brandon Bolden as options should Blount decide to take his talents elsewhere. Blount wants to stay with the Patriots, but the money has to be right.

Rotoworld:

The Denver Post considers free agent Knowshon Moreno's "early estimated market value" to be $4 million per year.
This seems like a highly optimistic projection, presumably based on Steven Jackson's three-year, $12 million contract signed with the Falcons last offseason. We expect this year's free agent running back class to be rudely disappointed, from Ben Tate on down. And Moreno is somewhere between the third and seventh best back in the group. He's a red-light risk after struggling throughout his career before "breaking out" in Peyton Manning's offense.

Have I ever said how much I love Faust? I know I can find these news updates elsewhere but he makes it so easy. Thanks, bro!

Rotoworld:

A league source confirmed to Profootballtalk.com that free agent Aqib Talib is expected to have a bigger market this offseason than he did in 2013.
Talib had to settle for a one-year, $4.86 million contract last offseason due to off-field and injury concerns. He was able to reestablish his value this year, playing in 13 games and finishing second in the AFC with four interceptions. ESPN Boston expects Talib to command a 3-4 year deal worth $6-8 million annually. The Patriots also haven't ruled out using the franchise tag on Talib, which would guarantee him roughly $11.25 million on a one-year tender.

Source: Profootballtalk on NBC Sports

Rotoworld:

ESPN Boston doesn't envision the Patriots being interested in a reunion with free agent CB Asante Samuel.
The Patriots are focused on re-signing Aqib Talib. However, if he gets away, New England is going to need a starting outside corner to play opposite Alfonzo Dennard. Samuel isn't expected to be on the list of potential options. He recently turned 33, andy is best days are long gone. Samuel will likely have to settle for a one-year deal with little to no guaranteed money.

ESPN.com's Todd Archer expects the Cowboys to show interest in free agent Robert Meachem this offseason.
Meachem would be no higher than the Cowboys' No. 4 receiver if signed, but could be brought in as a low-paid veteran to replace Miles Austin, who is widely expected to be released as a post-June 1 cut. Meachem, 29, had 16 catches, 324 yards, and two touchdowns in 15 games with the Saints in 2013. He should be limited to non-guaranteed one-year deals in free agency.

Rotoworld:

Free agent Knowshon Moreno says he would prefer to re-sign with the Broncos.
"We'll see what happens in the offseason and hopefully I'm still here with this team," Moreno said. "I'm still part of the Broncos and that's all good right now. We'll see what happens with the rest." Moreno won't break the bank -- perhaps commanding no more than $3 million per year -- but Denver has Montee Ball, C.J. Anderson, and Ronnie Hillman locked in at far cheaper price tags.

Source: 9 News Colorado
Free agent Eric Decker acknowledged he's uncertain whether the Broncos will re-sign him.
"I would love to come back," said Decker. "I don't know my future, either." Decker turns 27 in March, and multiple NFL insiders have reported the Broncos will let him reach the open market, where he's likely to receive several big-time contract offers. The franchise tag is not being discussed as a reasonable means for Denver to keep Decker. We expect him to play elsewhere in 2014.

LOL Jets.....Maclin and Sanders are #1 WRs?
On the Jets? Yes. Maclin could be one on a number of teams though, including the one he'd be leaving.
BS....completely over-rated. You can have Maclin as a #1. He is no better than a Santonio Holmes....I will take Brandon Marshall; Calvin Johnson; Larry Fitz; Andre J; Jordy N; Josh Gordon etc as my #1.
Yeah, I guess I shouldn't have claimed Maclin was one of the best WRs in the league and how he was better than Calvin Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald. That was foolish. Thanks for setting me straight.

It's a good thing all those guys are available to the Jets. If this was a dynasty league, they'd try and convince HOU or ARI that Stephan Hill has more value then AJ/Fitz because he's younger than them

Hmmm. .......I didn't realize all those guys were FAs.

Here's a list of teams where I think Maclin could sign and be the No. 1 WR:

NY Jets

NE Patriots (although second receiver to TE Gronk)

Minnesota Vikings

Indianapolis Colts (Hilton would still be a big part of the offense as well)

Oakland Raiders

St. Louis Rams

Tennessee Titans (Wright and Hunter may prove to be more talented with experience)

Philadelphia Eagles

Caronlina Panthers

There's a few other teams that you could make an argument as well, Not everyone can have Calvin, Fitzgerlad, Gordon or Marshall.

Patterson may be more talented (although both were first round picks), but still has room to grow as a WR. Jennings seems to be in the decline stage of his career - not sure with "at best" if you're suggesting Jerome Simpson or Jarius Wright are better but my guess is that would be a very unpopular opinion.

But we can stick Minneota is the "argument" category, I guess.

Having watched the Vikings, I don't think Jennings has lost much...considering the QB play that he had to put up with this year, I thought he played well.

Norv Turner will be the OC, right? Yeah. So you can expect Patterson to at least be the #1 WR in terms of targets.

Rotoworld:

New Vikings OC Norv Turner said he wants to get Adrian Peterson in space more often.

Turner sees two ways to accomplish this goal. First, by improving the downfield passing game so Peterson won't see the most eight-man boxes in the league. And second, by utilizing him as a receiver. Turner has a history of this going back to Emmitt Smith and LaDainian Tomlinson, each of whom caught 50+ passes while playing for Norv. In 2014, Peterson projects to threaten his career-high of 43 catches and he remains locked in as a top-three fantasy pick. Turner's presence can only help.

I would prefer to see Cordarrelle Patterson lead the team in passing targets in 2014.

Golden Tate | WR

Golden Tate has best hands in the league by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com

(02/09/14) After dropping just three passes this season, Seahawks receiver Golden Tate has caught 144 of the 149 catchable passes thrown to him since 2011, according to Pro Football Focus. Tate's 3.9 percent drop rate in that stretch is the lowest among wideouts with at least 100 targets.

Tate also led all receivers in 2013 with 21 forced missed tackles after his receptions.

For a receiver needy team this is the free agent WR I'd be looking at.

The Indianapolis Star agrees with ESPN Colts blogger Mike Wells that free agent Ahmad Bradshaw is unlikely to be re-signed.

Indy Star beat writer Stephen Holder believes Bradshaw was the Colts' best back when healthy in 2013, but Bradshaw's lack of durability has made him a poor investment for NFL clubs. "If he does return, it will be an attempt to add depth, at most," writes Holder. Bradshaw turns 28 in March. He's missed 19 games over the past three seasons and underwent neck surgery in October.

ESPN New York expects free agent Eric Decker to command "No. 1" receiver-type money, or "at least" $9 million per year.

It's a pretty optimistic projection in a year where the incoming collegiate receiver group is considered incredibly deep. We'll say this for Decker: Greg Jennings landed a deal worth $9 million annually from the Vikings last offseason, and Decker is worth more than him. Still, if Decker is going to command that kind of money, receiver-needy teams would be savvy to exhaust all possible alternatives. He's a strong No. 2 wideout in the NFL, but does not tilt coverage.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel considers the Packers "pretty unlikely" to re-sign free agent Jermichael Finley (neck surgery).

The Packers' medical team wouldn't clear FS Nick Collins following a similar neck procedure, and may fail Finley in the same way. Ex-college basketball player Brandon Bostick wound up playing under 150 snaps 2013, but flashed with his opportunities and is worth owning in Dynasty leagues as Finley's potential heir apparent. Andrew Quarless is another unrestricted free agent.

The Cincinnati Enquirer believes there's an 80 percent chance free agent RE Michael Johnson leaves the Bengals.

The Enquirer gives the Bengals a 45 percent chance to retain free agent OT Anthony Collins. Cincinnati recently handed DT Geno Atkins and LE Carlos Dunlap huge extensions, making then far less likely to pony up for Johnson. Rotoworld currently ranks 27-year-old Johnson as the No. 1 free agent defensive end with an expiring contract, behind only Greg Hardy. We have Lamarr Houston third, Michael Bennett fourth, and Jared Allen fifth.

Buccaneers signed QB Mike Kafka, formerly of the Jaguars.

Kafka, 26, was a fourth-round stab by Andy Reid's Eagles in the 2010 draft. He's appeared in four career games as a backup, completing 11-of-16 throws for 107 yards and two interceptions. Simply lacking NFL-caliber passing tools, Kafka will likely serve as a "camp arm" before being waived prior to the season.
