2014 NHL Offseason Thread - Free Agency Starts July 1st (1 Viewer)

Flyers sign DelZotto to a one year deal after learning that Kimmo Timonen was hospitalized with blood clots in his leg and both lungs.

He is most likely out this year, and possibly the end of his career. Sad that he can't go out on his own terms if that's the case. Been one of the most consistent and reliable dmen ever to wear a Flyers jersey, and a really good dude from all accounts. Hope he has a full recovery to full health.

The Tampa Bay Lightning will be a popular pick when Eastern Conference predictions are made for the upcoming 2014-15 NHL season. A big reason for their success this past season was 6-foot-7 goaltender Ben Bishop, who posted stunning numbers in his first full year as a no. 1.

On Saturday, the 27-year old Bishop was rewarded with a two-year extension from the Lightning worth $11.9 million, according to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun. The Tampa Bay Times' Joe Smith reports the deal includes a no-movement clause.

Bishop started 63 games for the Lightning last season, posting five shutouts, a .933 even strength save percentage and helping Tampa to 37 wins, which ended with him being named a Vezina Trophy finalist. He's currently entering the final season of a two-year deal he signed in April 2013. His $5.95M AAV puts him eighth among all goaltenders this season.
Reading too many good things about them. Makes me worried.

Man, what kind of odds could you have gotten on that back in 1993?

I know you dont check in all the time. But next time you do, I need a list of all your nicknames

We were driving and caught a flyers and capitals sticker on a car. I told my 4 year old it was more like the cryers and crapitals. He thought it was the funniest thing he had ever heard. He wants more. I told him I had to check with sherriff.

"We are pleased to have the opportunity to become partners in the New York Islanders with Charles, and to pursue our shared dream of winning a fifth Stanley Cup for the greatest fans in the NHL," Mr. Ledecky said.

that's not a Sheriff creation though.

Dead Wings and stRangers are the only other two Sheriff nicknames that came to mind right away.

He came up with the Cryers and Crapitals?

Just a matter of time now.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired three hockey bloggers who specialize in advanced stats analytics, reports Yahoo Sports. The three will form a new advanced stats department for the team, and will report to assistant GM Kyle Dubas.

The hires include Darryl Metcalf, founder of ExtraSkater.com; Cam Charron, who previously wrote for Yahoo Sports Canada; and Rob Pettapiece, who worked for Yahoo Sports' junior hockey blog Buzzing the Net.

With all the picks the Rangers have dealt (and will deal), moves like this are really important (this is their 4th semi-high profile signing in the past year, I believe). Won't pretend to know anything about Hayes but it's seemingly no risk with a lot of upside.

exactly.

this is like having a first rounder land in your lap. Even if he doesn't pan out, it's a chance you have to take being that you've traded away so many high round picks.

big win getting Hayes. I think they'll both be good, but Hayes will be a better pro thanGaudreau
he played with Krieder and I like that they were able to get him. Wonder if the hawks trading his brother had anything to do with it. Probably a log jam at forward for them anyway
Sounded like he felt entitled to a spot on the Hawks, it was reported that he wanted to a guaranteed spot on the Hawks in the top 6. That wasn't going to happen and with the Hawks forward depth I doubt he would get a call up unless there was an injury.

Great pickup. Everybody thought he was headed to Calgary or Florida.
It's funny a lot of rumors out of Chicago say the kid has an entitlement complex and the attitude that goes along with it. He didn't want a two way deal and wanted Top 6 minutes
he had the leverage here.

sucks for the Hawks to get nothing.
They get a 2nd rounder and it's not like the Hawks are lacking for prospects at FW right now. If he was legit 2C prospect no way Stan lets him leave. After hearing of his attitude I am not all that concerned but not many players out there that go from the NCAA to the NHL without time in the minors....seems like he didn't want to play in the AHL at least for the Hawks.

I created Couver, you are welcome

The Dead Wings was a nickname that was around in the Darkness Harkness years

Best NHL projections for fantasy? I've used Dobber for the last several years and he's pretty good. Anyone better?

Hawks, how do they get a 2nd for Hayes?

Under rules in the collective bargaining agreement, Chicago will receive the 54th pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

Hayes and the Blackhawks had until 11:59 p.m. Friday to reach an agreement. Hayes, who played at Boston College, was selected by Chicago in the first round (No. 24) of the 2010 NHL Draft

The collective bargaining agreement gives an NHL team four years to a sign a player, so long as he remains a college student over that period. When the player officially exits college, as Hayes has, the NHL team retaining his rights must sign him by 11:59 p.m. ET on Aug. 15 in that same offseason.

Compensatory picks are only given for first-rounders: If you take a guy in the first 30 picks and somehow don't end up signing him despite your best efforts, you get the same numbered pick in the very next draft, except its a 2nd-rounder

Lottery odds changed. NHL hates the Sabres.
They'll probably change it back for the Tankers when they suck real bad again. Thanks for the info Rud.

Joe Thornton stripped of his C in San Josey, that's gotta sting. I guess it's his fault.

The Sharks officially announce Wednesday that Thornton would not be the team captain entering training camp, theMercury News reports.
Coach Todd McLellan said that he doesn't consider it to be stripping Thornton of anything, since he'll be given the opportunity to earn the "C" back. The team has talked frequently this offseason of passing the torch to the next generation and that's what this appears to be. Thornton was not only rumored to be losing his "C," but was involved in trade rumors as well. However, he has a no trade clause and doesn't seem interested in leaving San Jose.

I just heard Crosby is going to the Leafs. Trying to see if it's BS or not.

I can;t believe it's true.
