McFadden is the one guy I was ok with letting walk.Ya, that is a waste of $4M. Better spent on keeping JV.

And more than Baltimore signed Monroe for. Complete joke.LOL. The Raiders paid Saffold MORE than they offered Veldheer.
This certain makes Reggie look like he is in over his head.
Revis is still under contract. Bucs are trying to trade him. I would not give up a high pick or pick(s). Its one thing to pay his $16 million salary its another to give up a ton for him then have to pay that.Scoreboard update:
Raiders loose starting LT and best DL; sign a player that is universally considered a better guard than tackle to replace Veldheer.
Broncos sign T.J. Ward

Get off your ### Reggie and sign Reves and Allen!
I think he is very good. Plays very hard and is good against the run. Can also probably play inside on passing downs if need be. People always complain about his sack numbers, but I think they would be better if he was on a line with better players than he played with in Oakland. I really wanted him back, but the current regime does not value good players. You should be very pleased.Bears fan here. What do you guys think about Houston? I've watched him play very little and only know what I've read
Maybe he could get more sacks in a better DL (though CHI in rebuild mode there). He has a great motor, like you said, and might be one of the best DEs in the league against the run after Watt. CHI gave up historically bad franchise totals against the run last year, so that fits nicely, he will make them stouter.I think he is very good. Plays very hard and is good against the run. Idiot Bay Area reporter that has had a beef with the raiders foreverWho is Tim Kawkami? I know he is a sports columnist but he is blowing up twitter
with anti-Raider stuff.
it's a bush deal for a bush player. it's VERY team friendly. Why are people acting like DMAC was signed for 4M? Wasn't he signed for a deal that maxed out at 4M and will likely never be reached or come close to that?
How does this even happen?LOL. The Raiders paid Saffold MORE than they offered Veldheer.

I don't expect you to know this as the Media hasn't caught onto it, but all of Reggie's deals are WAY front-loaded.My condolences to the Raider fans. Throwing around millions and millions of dollars..........best of luck moving forward.

Money being spent isn't the problem.
We have a ton of 2014 cap space that were required to spend and Reggie is front-loading his contracts to get that done this year. With these front loaded deals, Reggie will still have plenty of space to pay 'his guys' in future years.
The issue is whether or not the guys we're adding are able to play to the level we need them to. It'd be nice if the Saffolds and Howard's pan out to be 'solid'. They don't have to be Elite cause after their first year they hardly count against the cap.
Reggie understands contracts and the salary cap, that's fine.
Now it's time to see how good he is at evaluating talent in both the 2nd wave of free agency and most importantly, The Draft.
Since Reggie prides himself as a great evaluator of talent, planning to build this the same way Seattle did, with hand-picked draft picks, he has to hit on real talent.
If he can't succeed and find studs through the draft, we're #### out of luck.
I'm not trying to talk you to the ledge man, but I don't see how you could feel anything but pissed about this. Like said earlier in the thread, Reggie paid through the nose for average bookends. Big money for mediocrity. They are Sparano's guys. Sparano is on a one year deal. The whole coaching staff is on a one year deal. If Mark Davis holds Reggie to his word about being competitive or else with a no excuses tagline, there's no way that this coaching staff including Sparano doesn't get the heave ho next offseason. And so should Reggie for that matter. And all the front loaded contracts and cap space for 2015 will mean the next GM to come in will hire a coach that has to evaluate the mediocre left over talent and see if it fits in the system. The Austin contract made my blood pressure go thru the roof. I was mad about overpaying Mike Brisiel. This is awful. Overpaying for a crummy RG Saffold what you could have gotten Veldheer makes me puke in my mouth. The next regime is going to take a look at the roster next season and likely do another clean sweep, purging Reggies guys. I hope whoever that GM is they don't just do it because they were "Reggie's guys", the way Reggie has done to get rid of AD's guys. This whole start of free agency makes my blood boil and I can't wait for Reggie to be sent packing after the season. This is a disgrace! It appears that the oline decisions are heavily influenced by Sparano. He didn't like Veldheer so Reggie low balled him. Sparano liked Howard so Reggie extended a large offer. Not sure how I feel about this. Soarano did a very good job with limited talent last year, so I can only hope his evaluations are on the mark.
Did you read somewhere that Sparano did not like Veldheer or is that an educated guess? It appears that the oline decisions are heavily influenced by Sparano. No doubt that's a win upgrade on the right side. And not to be overly negative, didn't we just invest in a high second round pick last year to shore that position up? Reggie's poor decisions are cascading on top of each other. Howard looks like a decent free agent signing. Just wondering why we are plugging holes and making them at the same time instead of addressing the building portion of the offseason. This is moving sideways at best, upgrading at RT and downgrading at LT at least that's how it looks on the surface.Just Blog Baby @JustBlogBaby 9h
Name one Oakland Raiders offensive linemen who gave up two sacks and two penalties last season with as many snaps as Howard? I'll wait.
In googling this guy, the Jets were trying hard to re-sign him, and couldn't.
Raiders in a hurry to bolster pass rushBy Steve Corkran
Wednesday, March 12th, 2014 at 7:26 am in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders are meeting with defensive end Justin Tuck and linebacker LaMarr Woodley on Wednesday as they seek players that can get pressure on the quarterback on a consistent basis.
Coach Dennis Allen and defensive coordinator Jason Tarver are high on players that have the ability to “affect the quarterback.” Tuck and Woodley fit the bill, with the duo combining for 16 sacks last season and 192 during their NFL careers.
Tuck, who turns 31 in late March, recorded 11 sacks last season, his ninth with the New York Giants. That’s almost twice as many as the six notched by defensive end Lamarr Houston, who bolted the Raiders in free agency Tuesday.
Woodley turns 30 during the 2014 season, which will be his eighth. He spent his first seven seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Raiders signed offensive linemen Rodger Saffold and Austin Howard and re-signed running back Darren McFadden on Tuesday, the first day of free agency.
Houston, left offensive tackle Jared Veldheer and running back Rashad Jennings signed with other teams after saying all along that they intended to return to the Raiders.
The Oakland Raiders lost their starting left tackle in free agency when Jared Veldheer signed with the Arizona Cardinals. As a result of this, much of the Raider Nation was very upset and blamed general manager Reggie McKenzie for losing one of their home grown guys.
But this morning on 95.7 The Game, John Middlekauff dropped an absolute bomb on fans.
According to Middlekauff, the negotiations between the Raiders and Veldheer got incredibly emotional and it played a major role in the deal not getting done. He said that Veldheer’s brother was “impossible to deal with” from what his sources were telling him. He went on to say that he felt like there was a decent chance that Veldheer would still be with the Raiders if had a normal, third party agent who was not emotionally involved.
Middlekauff discussed the fact that McKenzie would have to approach the negotiations treating Veldheer like a commodity, because that’s what he is in that scenario. Middlekauff hypothesized that the way McKenzie talked about Veldheer for the purpose of explaining why he was offering the contract he was could have upset Veldheer’s brother.
He also stated that he was confident the Raiders had, or were willing to offer Veldheer $8.5 million a year (though he was not certain about guaranteed money) and make him a very highly paid tackle. If all of this is true, it really shines a light on what happened with Veldheer.
Agree this is what we need today a little bit of good news.massraider said:Vic Tafur @VicTafur 1m
Defense day: Besides Tuck and Woodley, #Raiders are also in on Henry Melton and BJ Raji, per sources. (But I think Melton goes to #Cowboys)
Man. This would be.....awesome.
