2014 Oakland Raiders Regular Season Thread (1 Viewer)

Penn isn't JV I guess but if his head is on right he was pretty good two years ago.

Even if they land Penn I think adding Oher would be a good move.

I wouldn't mind Oher, but he wouldn't really compete at LT, I don't think. I think he has been a RT for a while. My thinking is that if they sign Penn, the Oher talk would disappear. I think he is contingency plan for Penn.

This will sound funny, but if they sign Penn, they would have the T spots locked up, I think (Penn/Howard/Barnes/Watson).

Oher has been RT for awhile, I just think there are still question marks about Howard, Watson and IMO Barnes is JAG.

Sign Oher & Penn, play mix and match at the G/T spots until they get a combo they like and if they structure the contracts well (which it seems like McKenzie actually has an aptitude for) then you can cut bait on the ones that don't pan out in a year or two.

Seems like it would set the deck on the line for the next few years.

Howard at this point, probably has less questions than Oher. He has started every game last two years, and the Jets were working till last minute to re-sign him. Ravens with Oher? Not so much.

My guess is that Oher, while not considered a cornerstone, will be able to find a place that didn't just sign a RT to a new deal.

Hey, if they did sign him, and cut Barnes, I'd love it. They just re-signed Barnes, who seems comfortable in his role as swingman, so I don't see it.

I'm not an o-line expert, but it's possible that Howard can be moved to LT. He is a much improved pass blocker over the last two years, and despite his mammoth size, he wasn't ever a real "road grader" type RT in run blocking.

Maybe, but I still maintain that Watkins will be in the mix. He will have a significant contribution at guard or tackle (if he stays healthy).

I'm down with the Antonio Smith news, we could use more DL. But Penn is a fatass check casher that I would not be surprised is a training camp cut. Put on a lot of weight last year and unmotivated lazy SOB. Hope he fails his physical.

If the money that was reported for Penn is correct he is the starting LT and no chance of being cut. I think he is pretty good and he never misses games.

Definitely okay with the Smith signing and will take a wait and see approach with Penn. Agree that he mailed it in last year but so did the whole roster in Tampa. He was a good player previously and he is still young enough to be solid for a few more years f he gets his head on straight. I still think they need to bring in at least one more OL.

You mean Watson, but I agree with your point that he will still be in the mix. I mean he was a second round pick last year I hope they do not have to give up on him already.

He got run outta Tampa. Tampa took a huge dead money hit to release him and are giddy over their new OT Collins, who has never had the role Penn did. I think he's awful. I won't try to sugarcoat it.

I dunno about that. The kicks step is kind of ingrained into the position, to have to rotate in a mirror image. It's hard to transition from right to left. Usually you see guys go from left to right. There are swing guys like Barnes for example who started out on the left side and transferred over to the right. We need to solve the LT spot soon, and I hate to say this but I bet the answer will be "versatile" :X

@NFLorentime DE Antonio Smith and OL Donald Penn both expected to sign with the #Raiders in next 48 hours
It just moved.
LOL!

Smith just seems like a body looking at the stats, and Penn feels like a consolation prize after losing Velhdeer. But competition never hurts.

Two space eaters and a lock down corner to go! (And possibly a free safety). I would still like to see them add another pass rusher. We cannot have enough of them in a division with Rivers and Manning.

Melton and Simms are two players I am hoping they can still sign.

Good points. I think this is where Sparano comes into play. He did a solid job with less talent last year. Coach em up!

stats
Well, Smith has been playing opposite Watt in a 3-4, not a spot ripe for stats. 3-4 guys seldom do (unless you are named JJ Watt).

I actually wonder about his role. Swingman? Interior pass rusher on 3rd down? Rotate with Woodley? I dunno.

I know he's better than their 3rd DE now, so I will take him. He's 32, so he's not getting some long term big money deal.

I know he's not very popular on these boards but I have a gut feeling Brandon Browner will be that corner. If Reggie feels he can clean up his act he could be that big physical corner they need.

Like to see it, but I have a feeling he's trying to get a deal done elsewhere. Same with Melton. A lot of free agents make only one visit. if a guy has made two visits, and we ain't one of them, I have to believe we are far down their list.

I know Allen said he wasn't interested in coming here, but couldn't Reggie just give him a quick call, tell him to come and promise a blank check or something? Would love to have Tuck and Allen competing with each other to see who can take Peyton's head off first.

Yeah I heard Melton is meeting with Seattle. That doesn't bode well for the Raiders. ...
I am a defensive tackle freak, and been following it a lot. Seems like Chicago is prepared to let Melton see what is out there, and seems like Chicago is gonna get first chance to match, ala Tuck.

Word round the Twitterfire was that teams are interested in checking out Melton's knee, and maybe the only thing he has been offered is prove-it deals.

Melton not visiting Oakland right off the bat tells you that either a) money isn't his first priority or b) Raiders interest isn't as strong as other teams.

ProFootballTalk@ProFootballTalk 49s
Brandon Browner's visit to the Redskins was never canceled. It was postponed. It's happening today. Pats, Saints, Raiders in mix too.

Keep Hope Alive!

By the way, Vance Walker and Pat Sims still out there. Both did workmanlike jobs last year. Would be fine with cheapo deals for both of them for depth.

Sure, fine whatever. That whole team quit last year and they cleaned house and they also ran Revis out of town.

I am not saying the Raiders are but the Bucco's front office isn't exactly something to hold up as a paragon of virtue y'know.

More good signings. I'd like to get a little younger on the DL, Some signings of guys under 28 would help build a long term core. However, the past couple days have been encouraging. Mark pulling the legal move to get out of the Saffold deal was HUGE and Reggie is getting some good deals done. I am not a Reggie apologist, and questined his talent evaluation since the first practice I went to and saw Flynn (shudder to think about that day and the next two practices I saw were no better)

However, Reggie does have a skill set that can help the team and seeing the reigns pulled in by Mark, gave me more confidence in Mark (still not at a high level) and hope that him pulling the reigns in on Reggie will go a long way towards Reggie being even better knowing he doesn't have FULL atonomy. It's hard to be patient guys, but we need to be. There is a lot of solid FA's out there still, a lot of $$ left and the draft yet to come.

Let's not get overly high, or low this early. Hard to do, I know. Reggie still screwed up with the JV situation in my opinion, but obviously Sporano didn't feel that highly about JV or Reggie would've made a better offer to keep him. Sporano knows his stuff about OL, so I defer to him. And yes, I'm pissed about the BS talk from Reggie about JV, Houston and Jennings being priority signings earlier, but let's see what get's done the next 2 months. Bottom line, I'm cautiously optimistic now when 3 days ago I was pissed enough to leave work early, lose sleep and stay away from the family so I wouldn't lash out on them. I'll take this feeling over what we had.

And none of these deals stink of desperation, or overpaying. None are going to hurt the cap. Tarell Brown was a real nice move.

Look, we are still going to have holes. Free safety, another LB, TE, there's lots of spots we still need.

It sounds like Penn was looking for Saffold money. Hoping we can get him for cheap if Washington doesn't overpay.

Hoping we get Colledge as well

Penn and Saffold are not worth that money. Especially Penn from what I'm reading/seeing. That is top 3 LT money. Monroe is the one we should've/could've paid top LT money too. Not these guys. I'd like to get Colledge also.

If we stay at #5, I'd like to get Watkins or Matthews (Robinson or Clowney before them, but they'll be gone). Matthews has the pedigree to be an every game starter/baller for 10-15 years, and adding him to our other OL additions gives us a very good core that could become great.

The Raiders had the most cap room in the league.

Lost their two best players when Veldheer definitely should have been franchised, creating a huge hole at LT.

Signed a DE and an outside LB who will now play DE, both on the downside of their career. Take your pick, both are a downgrade from Houston. Taken in tandem not bad if Woodley can play DE.

Re-signed McFadden for reasonable money.

Re-signed Young who is just meh.

Signed Antonio Smith who is a pretty good player, but he is 32.

Signed Brown, a pretty good corner, who might be an upgrade over Porter.

Not one young building block type player who will be around more than two years probably.

Oh and the whole Saffold debacle.

Not sure how anyone can view whats gone on here as anything but a disaster so far.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here but other then the Saffold debacle I like what the Raiders have done thus far. Improved DL, check. Tarrell Brown better then Porter and Jenkins, check. Howard better then who we trotted out at RT last season, check. I can see the Raiders trading back a few spots in the first picking up some extra draft picks and drafting a Taylor Lewan or Zach Martin to help address the LT spot. What I like about Zach Martin is that he can play both Tackle and Guard. So draft him and have him compete against Watson for the LT spot and if Watson wins the LT spot Martin can slip right in and play LG.

I am more of a glass half full type of guy and not a debby downer glass half empty type of guy though.

I used to have a lot more optimism. The last 10 years or so have changed me. Also not sure how its possible that this team has actually gotten older.

I'm ok with the team getting older as long as it gets better. Most of the contracts are for two years, so my guess is Reggie will use those two years to bring in eventual younger talent to replace the aging vets. Basically using the vets as a bridge until then.

I don't think it's a disaster. Definitely disappointing. They should have franchised JV and traded for Revis. So what if you overpay them for one year, the cap money is there and could have dealt with next year next year. Overpaying is only a problem if it restricts the future, and neither of them would have long term cap implications if they walk after 2014. If they are worth it, you pay them again.

You can't sign who won't talk to you, and not a lot of premium names were visiting. This isn't new for this team, and unless you want to see the overblown contracts of yesteryear, this is going to be a slow build. It's not like there were a lot of young building block players in the first place. Until the QB is figured out no one's coming to Oakland. If they get that right the rest follows. For now, you add a couple of players that are better than what they had, you win a couple more games, and you go find your QB. And if you get that wrong, you do it again.

Josh Freeman - QB - Vikings
NFL.com's Albert Breer confirms the Raiders are "looking at" free agent Josh Freeman.
The Raiders would prefer to sign Matt Schaub if he's released, but Freeman, free agent Mike Vick, and Mark Sanchez are also on their list. Freeman played under OC Greg Olson for three seasons in Tampa and could be a fit based on his knowledge of the system. 26-year-old Freeman has yet to draw any other interest on the open market.
