2014 Oakland Raiders Regular Season Thread (2 Viewers)

Good luck to us today.

If the Raiders can beat this KC team twice in a season, on the road, after we embarassed them 2 weeks ago, with their playoff hopes in the balance, THAT would be a very good sign of things to come.
.Nevermind.

I haven't seen him play. Can someone give me an assessment of Carr's abilities? Is it possible considering what he has to work with?

Can he be "the guy"?

Why was the run abandoned yesterday? If I had to choose between Murray running the ball vs a rookie QB throwing to below-average WRs, I know what I would do.

I still think Carr could be good enough. The Raiders need a serious upgrade at WR. Jones is nice depth or a WR 3.

My thoughts:

Hasn't been perfect, has made some bad decisions at times, which is to be expected.

I am massively optimistic. No running game, James Jones and Mychal Rivera have been his two most reliable options, otherwise I think his numbers would be much better. I personally think his passing talent is obvious. He throws back shoulder passes as much as anyone this side of Brees. He has a whip. His accuracy is very good, which I am most excited about, as I don't think that is coached.

Speaking of coaching, it's pretty obvious he is a gym rat and is ahead of a lot of young QBs in terms of reading defenses, and passing technique. Greg Cosell really speaks well of him, especially his footwork.

It appears that he takes to coaching, and likes the timing stuff. If Trestman gets fired in Chicago, I'd love to see him hired as OC here.

At least two receiving upgrades is a must. We have no idea if Streater will be re-signed.

Another TE, and a WR. I have no problem going WR at #3 (my best guess where we are gonna be picking) if Cooper (or whoever) is the top-rated player there. Carr needs some help.

Jury is still out for me, but I think he could be. I would like to see him with a better OC and WRs. I also need to see him throw the ball down the field more.

I am perplexed as to why the Raiders stopped running the ball. They have Murray who was averaging 4.9 yards a run yesterday. After giving him 12 carries they just stopped giving him the ball. The Chiefs are 30 in rush defense why would you stop running the ball it makes zero sense to me.

Weren't they down by a lot? That'll usually do it.

They abandoned the run before they even were down by a lot.

I only caught bits and pieces, I will catch the Rewind, but the defense is so prone to springing leaks. There's either extreme youth at a spot (corners and LBs) or replaceable talent (Burris, the DE spot).

I'm hoping for a two-down plugger at MLB in the offseason. I'd love David Harris as a stopgap. We don't need a 3-down MLB, we have Sio and Mack for nickel LBs. I mean, if we can find a Luke Keuchly, I'd take him, and there's some draft prospects that are interesting, but defense starts up the middle.

Agreed. We need to find a MLB this offseason. I don't trust Roach with his concussion problems and Burris is definitely not the answer.

Thanks for posting that krsone. My god the Raiders need a real coaching staff.

The score was 10-6 in the middle of the 3rd quarter. The ratio of pass to run was 30 to 12. Reece got 0 touches.

The Raiders lack talent and should not win most games on paper. However, the handling of the talent is an even worse mistake. You have to coach what you have.

coaching staff is a joke, has been a joke for YEARS. that's the main problem i have with reggie. these recent hires are on him. draft looks solid, FA could be better, but the staff is awful

Reggie has to go. He's got his fingerprints all over this mess. Some people want to give him a raise and bring back Sparano too. 2-12 baby!

Billick had a good breakdown a few weeks ago. His main point was "he's throwing to what he sees. He needs to learn to throw to what he can't yet see." His visual displayed it really well, he showed a guy running a route that had no window with a S over the top and an undernearth LB. Carr looked away, and as the WR finished the route he was in a huge pocket between the sideline, the safety, and the underneath LB. His point was as he learns to read those coverages he'll be able to take advantage of those plays.

To me, he's still missing a lot of these. Seems he's even more raw than expected. That's very correctable if he gets good coaching. Is he? Will he? His brother's experience should help, but serious time needs to be spent in film breakdown. If his coaches don't do a good job with him this will stunt his development. It doesn't look to me like it's improving quickly. I think he's got a good grasp on his limitations - he doesn't throw a lot of bad/risky passes, he doesn't take bad chances, he doesn't take a lot of sacks. And he's got a rifle when he does see something he likes. He just needs to process the game better.

Oh, and good lord does he need better weapons. Their WR corp is a joke.

Two years then kick 'im out!!! Impatience and turnover is a terrible philosophy and the hallmark of failing franchises. How has it been working out for the Raiders since '95? Only one coach was worth a darn and he was the longest tenured, go freaking figure. The NOWNOWNOW!!! generation of fans needs to settle down and let Reggie keep building this franchise. His drafts are looking better each week, the team is incredibly well situated for the cap and draft, he has earned a second head coach hire.

4-12

4-12

2-12

Not sure how that earns him a 4th year.

Assuming the 9ers are foolish enough to let Harbaugh walk, I think the Raiders will be his preferred choice for several reasons:

  • Raiders are in great salary cap condition
  • Carr is a young, promising QB prospect
  • Most importantly, he has several young children, making the idea of relocating less appealing.
Fingers XXX'd

LOL. So many loose ends. Who is the new coach? GM? Where will the team call it's home in the future? In some ways it is a very exciting time to be a Raidsr fan. Lots of promise.

I gotta say if they move to San Antonio it will be a lot easier to change allegence's to the 9ers. Yay, I know. 10 years ago I would punch the current me in the face. Trust me, I grew up a Raiders fan in the 70s, the Raiders hey day... Maybe old age has mellowed me, but San Antonio... I am out.

I have lived in the midwest my whole life so I have no Oakland ties. It wouldn't bother me at all if the Raiders moved to San Antonio. I want the Raiders to get a shiny new stadium and top notch facilities. I would prefer that they stay in Oakland, however if Oakland is unwilling to help in any way or investors can't be found then I'm good with the Raiders finding a place that is willing to help.

Totally agree. I grew up in NYC and didn't really know the difference between Oakland and LA anyway until I moved out here. I'm fine with them moving anywhere that will get them out of their current backed-up-sewer-line dump of a stadium and onto a new one that will attract talented players and coaches. I will regrettably always be a Raiders fan regardless of their location.

I've lived in New Jersey my whole life so Oakland or San Antonio or anywhere else makes no difference to me.

Yeah, I don't get this line of thinking either. I can understand from a nostalgia point of view that "San Antonio Raiders" does not have the same luster, but you did root for them when they were in LA, right?

I'm with you, krson and joey -- what matters is that the legacy of this franchise continues in a way that puts them in a position to succeed as they have in the past -- new locale, new stadium, etc. help in the drastic turnaround we need, then great. We bleed Silver and Black wherever the team physically lies, for better or for worse.

FWIW, despite the SA mayor's belief, I am not confident about how serious the Raiders are about SA as opposed to finding a way to at least stay in Cali. But money talks.

Yeah, me too. It needs to look like they love SA in order for others to get in play. LA still seems most likely. Also, have not followed the stadium situation much.

Yes, I rooted for them when they played in LA. Even fly down to a few games (at Bo's last game). But TEXAS! No! Even I have my limits. :P

I hear ya. In the end, Texas is a big market, and SA is a surprisingly big city (bigger than Dallas), so would want the best way to move this team forward financially. Maybe a move is needed as part of shocking this system out for stasis, but it will take some time getting used to calling them San Antonio Raiders.

Wherever they move, they better not monkey with the uniforms. That actually might be a deal breaker for me.

The Spurs wear Silver and Black, San Antonio is already used to the color scheme.

I heard something on local Bay Area sports radio last night on the drive home about the league, or LA, not letting a Davis-owned team move back to LA. Anyone know or hear anything about this? I'd imagine they're bitter and all from Al and the past move to and from LA, but can beggers (LA) really be choosers at this point with their embarassing situation of no NFL team in such a huge market?

Didn't mean so much the color (which the Spurs completely ripped off anyway like the Kings et al) as changing the scheme to some XFL or Arena League-looking drek. After a few misfires prior to Davis (Oakland Senors anyone? Black and gold scheme?), the uni has pretty much remained exactly the same since '63.

Guess it's possible they completely change name and logo a la the Oilers and the Browns of recent past, or the Braves, the Staleys, and Spartans of yore. Raiders have been well out of Top 10 in team merch sales for a while, but would imagine licensing still pulls in a hefty amount to make this kinds of changes financially stupid, which is comforting at least.

I think as long as a Davis owns this team, there wouldn't be a name change.

Mark has his daddy's legacy to uphold...

Wanted to give this thread and the Raider Faithful who kept it pretty much on or immediately just below page 1 the entire year, despite one of the worst records in franchise history a bunch of props.

Many had said over the course of the last year they had lost faith, but you kept coming back. Like herpes.

But you still bleed Silver & Black. You kept the poise and pride.

Kudos and excelsior!

Heard a really interesting Move the Sticks podcast. Listen if you can. He and Albert Breer broke down coaching vacancies, and candidates.

Breer brought up a good point. Harbaugh will be expensive, and I believe the intimation was that if Raiders can offer him a salary he likes, there are a ton of factors that make it work. Carr, no bad contracts, and some young pieces make this job a lot better than it was two years ago.

Also Breer believes Reggie is gone, and if Harbaugh comes in, he has a personnel guy he likes. If so, I am bummed, because whatever made this job more attractive, it's moves Reggie made.
