2014 Player/Team Spotlight -- Jacksonville Jaguars (1 Viewer)

2014 Team & Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. We are trying something different this year. We will still publish more than 100 PLAYER SPOTLIGHT articles on the main site. But we are going to solicit discussion on them in these TEAM threads.

Why the change?

NFL success is contingent on the sum of a team's parts. To think that a wide receiver succeeds simply because of himself would be foolhardy. What if a team has three excellent fantasy WR options (e.g., Denver with Demaryius Thomas, Wes Welker and Emmanuel Sanders)? Is a person's enthusiasm for a given player being properly offset against lesser expectations for one of their teammates?

Frankly, there was a lot of redundancy in former Spotlight threads. Asking you all to discuss the Giants new OC Ben McAdoo in threads for Eli Manning, Victor Cruz, Odell Beckham and Rashad Jennings seems inefficient. Now, in this new format, you can factor McAdoo (or any other team change) and it's impact on ALL the relevant skill players.

The NEW Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

  • Focus commentary on the fantasy relevant players in question, and your expectations for said players
  • Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
  • Avoid redundancies or things like "good posting" ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate
While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the relevant players on each team. We would note that it's important that your statistics makes sense. For example, projecting two running backs on the same team with 2,000 yards is an obvious gaffe. You might have three WR/TEs projected for 1,000+ yards, but that would be aggressive and a historical rarity. Back it up.

Projections should include:

  • For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
  • For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
  • For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
Recommended Players to Discuss:

  • QB Chad Henne
  • QB Blake Bortles
  • RB Toby Gerhart
  • RB Jordan Todman
  • WR Cecil Shorts
  • WR Ace Sanders
  • WR Marqise Lee
  • TE Marcedes Lewis
Each PLAYER SPOTLIGHT article will include:

  • Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
  • Links to thoughtful viewpoints from around the Web, including intriguing pull quotes from this thread
  • FBG Projections

Where to start? I guess I’ll start by going backwards which the Jaguars offense did a lot last year. To say the 2013 Jaguars offense was a trainwreck would be unfair to Casey Jones.

The 2013 offense started out at historically bad rates. The offensive line was decimated first by LT Luke Joeckel going down then the trade of Eugene Monroe to BAL. The WR corps was hampered by the suspensions of Justin Blackmon.

When your WR corps is Cecil Shorts and a bunch of nobodies, you’re in trouble. Ace Sanders was 2nd on team in receiving yards last year. Mike Brown(6), Kerry Taylor (4), and Stephen Burton (2) all started games at WR for the Jaguars last year.

Gabbert was busy being Gabbert and was eventually put out to pasture in favor of the mediocre journeyman Chad Henne.

Jaguars were held to 215 yards passing or less NINE times last year.

As a result teams crowded the line even more against an aging MJD who had a career low 3.4 YPA.

Jaguars were 32nd in points, 31st in total yards, 31st in first downs, 30th in passing TD, 31st in rushing yards…you get the point.

So what has changed?

MJD is off to Oakland. Toby Gerhart and UCF RB Storm Johnson in.

Blain Gabbert off to other side of bay from MJD and Blake Bortles in.

OL rebuilt. Joekel back at LT Zane Beadles at LG, Brewster at C replacing the retired Meester, 4th round draft pick Linder at RG and Pasztor flips back to his more natural RT position.

The line should be much improved but center and RG are untested and could be cause for concern.

Wr position has been bolstered by the additions of Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson.

Projections

QB

Henne 85/150 1050 5 TD 6INT

Bortles 230/385 2900 16TD 13INT

Just my guess but I think Bortles sits the first month. I’m assuming 4 starts for Henne and 12 for Bortles

WR

Shorts 60/805 5TD

Lee 55/725 4 TD

ARobinson 45/540 2TD

ASanders 25/250 1TD

I think the two rookie Wr muddy the waters here. Good for the Jaguars, bad for fantasy players. Marqise Lee has the best chance to put up a single monster game and think he’d be a solid selection in the best ball contest .

Allen Robinson will have more possession type routes I think and get some key first downs.

Ace Sanders could see his role greatly reduced.

RB

Gerhart 235/955 6TD 20/185/1

Todman 60/225 1 TD 12/85/0

DRobinson 40/170 1TD 25/175/2

SJohnson 10/45 0TD 30/180/1

I think it’s going to be interesting to see how backup RB sorts itself out. Supposedly Denard Robinson has bulked up and committed to RB. Also supposedly he physically couldn’t keep his hand open last year so his ball security is looking much improved.

Storm Johnson is practice squad/emd of roster guy who is a smaller RB.

TE

Marcedes Lewis 45/540/3

Clay Harbor 30/310/2

Meh.

Yuck, that's a fantasy wasteland. I'm a bit more optimistic than that but haven't really done projections yet.
