2015 New York Giants - WK10 Cruz announces season ending calf surgery (1 Viewer)

Question to Giant fans just for the sake of discussion.

While I appreciate everything he has done for us, I am not a huge Eli fan and I think he may be starting decline.

What do you think he could bring back in a trade? Would one of the top 5 teams give up a 1st and 2nd this year and a 1st next year? Would the Rams give up the 2nd and 13th picks this year? Or the Browns 4th and 26th this year and a 1st next year? Imagine what the Giants could do with those picks?
Interesting thought, but moot because there is no way in hell they trade Eli. Nor would any team give up those picks. He's 33 and coming off one of the worst seasons of his career. If he follows up last year's numbers with more of the same, then maybe next season it becomes a discussion. Would be very unlike the Giants to cut bait on him at this point.
Kirwan and Miller did a hypothetical trade between the Browns and Giants today on movin the chains. Something like this ...

Miller (Browns) calls Kirwan (Giants) - I hear you guys are a little down on Eli ... would you be interested in moving him?

Kirwan - Maybe but we would want two 1st rounders in return .................... This year.

Miller - I'd give you one this year and one next year

Kirwan - Ok but it had better be the 4th pick this year

Miller - Wait a minute I thought some people in your front office believe Eli is on the Downside.

Kirwan - Hold on just a minute ................................................those guys are fired, lets talk.

After, Kirwan went on to say in all seriousness, If you're the Browns with their history of QB problems ... Are you going to take your chances and roll with an unproven rookie or take the 2 time Superbowl Champion and MVP who would immediately be the greatest leader in Browns history? Oh ... and the Browns have tons of cap space.

Again ...this was hypothetical, but I think Eli (Or any proven QB) has more value than you might think. There are only a handful of QBs playing in the NFL that have won superbowls ... never mind two.
If the Giants could get to 1st round picks for Eli I think they should jump on it
Agreed and this is the year to do it

Five lingering questions: Eli Manning

By Dan Graziano | ESPN.com

The New York Giants have been the NFL's most active team so far this offseason, adding 14 free agents from outside their organization and re-signing 10 of their own. But free agency is no cure-all, as we've all heard countless times. So each day this week, we'll take a look at one question that still remains following the Giants' spring splurge. Today we ask:

What can the Giants expect from Eli Manning?

I swear this post was planned before Thursday's news that Manning was having surgery on his sprained left ankle. But obviously, the fact of offseason surgery can only add to the legitimacy of the questions surrounding the Giants' franchise quarterback following his worst season. Manning threw a career-high 27 interceptions in 2013 to go with 18 touchdown passes, his lowest total since becoming the Giants' full-time starter. His passing yardage total of 3,818 was his lowest since 2008. His 57.5 completion percentage was his lowest since 2007, and for the third year in a row was lower than it was the year before.

There are those who wonder whether Manning is a player in decline at age 33. This is a question that has not gone unasked within the ranks of the Giants' front office. It is part of the reason the Giants decided not to try this offseason to extend Manning's contract, which runs through 2015, even though doing so would have offered them significant salary cap relief. They would like to see him pull out of his downward trend before they commit to his late 30s. Their hope is that he has a big year and that extending him next offseason makes sense.

But there's no way to know, and the Giants didn't exactly load up around Manning this offseason. They brought in a couple of new offensive linemen who may or may not be upgrades. They added a running back who's probably better than what they had in the second half of 2013. They did not upgrade at wide receiver or tight end. Manning is going to have to make his recovery more or less on his own. He's going to have to find a way to improve the aspects of his performance that were his fault in 2013. The Giants hope that, in doing so, he can elevate the personnel around him on the offensive side of the ball.

They're also hoping, as coach Tom Coughlin has said more than once, that Manning will be "energized" by the arrival of new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. After 10 years in basically the same system, Manning will be learning new things this summer and putting them into practice in the fall. We do not yet know enough about the offense McAdoo is installing to guess whether Manning's skills are suited to it, but it's safe to assume the Giants asked (and answered) that question before hiring McAdoo. The new offense, if it bears any resemblance to the one in which McAdoo worked in Green Bay, is likely to rely on quick decision-making (a Manning strength) and short-range accuracy. The old reliance on downfield timing and the ability of his receivers to read coverages exactly as he does from play to play could dwindle, and with it the interception total.

Those are the theories, at least. We'll all find out together whether they hold up. The last time Manning had a 25-interception season was 2010, and it bothered him greatly. I remember speaking to him about it in training camp in 2011 and him telling me, "Some you can't control and some are the result of bad decisions. We just have to eliminate the bad-decision ones." Once he gets on the field, I imagine that will be his focus once again this year, with the hope that it ends up for him and the Giants the way that 2011 season did. From here, that seems like a stretch. I think the Giants would just like to see Manning look like he's in command of things again. Because last year, there were very few moments when that appeared to be the case.

Kevin Williams DT Vikings is going to visit the Giants

I have always liked Williams I think he would be a nice addition to the DT rotation

The Giants signed Josh Freeman to a one year deal

http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2014/04/giants_sign_former_buccaneers_vikings_qb_josh_freeman.html

I like the signing it gives the Giants some good competition for the number 2 QB spot

I hope Freeman can get his head on straight and overcome whatever his issues are

At this point he is the only back up on the roster that has proven he can be a successful starter in the NFL
Good for the Giants and Freeman. He can certainly play the position well enough to be a very good backup, and the Giants are a solid headed organization that should help Freeman get back on track (assuming he really wants to). Coughlin won't take no bs.

Do you guys expect anything from Manningham this year?

If I recall, he was technically the #2 or #3 right before Victor Cruz stepped up and was putting up pretty good numbers when Nicks went down or Cruz went down - I forget which one.

I think he is someone who can surprise this year and play like a top 30 fantasy wide receiver. Do you have any confidence in him?

Not at all. Unfortunatley Manningham is all but done as ever being considered as anything outside of depth. Injuries have derailed what may have been a decent career.

As of right now he is below Cruz, Randle, Jernigan and who knows who they end up taking in the draft. I don't see him leap frogging any of those guys.

so does this mean the giants gave up on Ryan Nassib?
I think it's more that they need a body for OTAs while Eli is recovering from surgery. Can't totally rule out the possibility that Freeman wins the job. But I think it's more Nassib's job to lose.

I expect Manningham backs up Randle. It's a longshot that Manningham wins the 2nd wide out spot.

Eli’s injury certainly has a lot to do with it.

Last season Nassib was never active which means he never beat out Curtis Painter. Now Nassib was a rookie and Gilbride’s system was tough to learn so I give the guy a pass.

Freeman comes cheap and while he hasn’t looked good the past few seasons he is only 26 and had had some decent seasons in the NFL.

Should be a nice competition for the #2 QB

Per BBI & Giants.com:

New York Giants Offseason Workout Program Begins Monday: The New York Giants offseason workout program begins Monday.

Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), each club’s official, voluntary nine-week offseason program is conducted in three phases:

  1. Phase One (April 21 – May 4): Consists of the first two weeks of the program with activities limited to strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation only.
  2. Phase Two (May 5 – May 26): Consists of the next three weeks of the program. On-field workouts may include individual player instruction and drills as well as team practice conducted on a “separates” basis. No live contact or team offense vs. team defense drills are permitted.
  3. Phase Three (see OTA dates below): Consists of the next four weeks of the program. Teams may conduct a total of 10 days of OTA workouts. No live contact is permitted, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are permitted.
Important dates of note:

  • April 21: Start of the offseason program.
  • May 28-30: Organized Team Activity (OTA) workouts.
  • June 2-3: OTA workouts.
  • June 5: OTA workout.
  • June 9-10: OTA workouts.
  • June 12-13: OTA workouts.
  • June 17-19: Mandatory, full-team mini-camp.
The Giants will not hold a rookie mini-camp this year because the 2014 NFL Draft is three weeks later than usual. For more on the offseason program, see Giants offseason workouts begin Monday by Dan Salomone of Giants.com.

What are you most looking forward to about the players being back on Monday?
  • Michael Eisen: I’m most looking forward to seeing Chris Snee back working with his teammates and taking a leadership role on the new-look offensive line. If the Giants are going to take a big step forward this year, the line must be significantly improved. And Snee is the key to that happening.
  • John Schmeelk: I’m looking forward to getting some idea of what Ben McAdoo’s new offense is going to incorporate, even if it is just getting to hear the players talk about it. We may not get any meaningful details until training camp, and perhaps not even until exhibition games. I have a feeling the Giants coaches will try to keep as much of the new offense under wraps so they can catch the league by surprise in Week 1 of the regular season.
  • Dan Salomone: I’m anxious to see not the players who are coming back, but the ones who are reporting to the Quest Diagnostics Training Center for the first time. This team has new blood in a lot of key areas due to its active role in free agency, and I’m curious to see how guys like Geoff Schwartz, Rashad Jennings, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, etc., start to gel with their new teammates. It has been an interesting offseason so far, and it’s only April.
What can you learn during the offseason conditioning program?
  • Michael Eisen: It won’t happen right away, but the most important thing we’ll learn from the program this year is how well the offensive players are digesting the system Ben McAdoo is installing. The program will end in June with a full-squad minicamp and that will give us an idea of how much progress they’ve made.
  • John Schmeelk: I think the most important thing you get out of the offseason conditioning program is health and a sense of which players put in the work in the offseason. Some guys come in looking great, but others look like they haven’t lifted a weight since the last season ended. Considering the chip on this team’s shoulder, I would expect the vast majority of players being in the former category, and being very excited to bounce back and put together a winning season.
  • Dan Salomone: It’s the first time they’re all together, so it’s the beginning of forming a new identity for the year. Due to the nature of the NFL, personnel turnover is inevitable every season and the dynamics shift. Are they workmanlike? Are they loose? Are they angry about missing the postseason? Are they optimistic about the way they finished last year? Every team needs an identity.

The New York Daily News reports FS Will Hill is likely "done" with the Giants after failing another drug test.
Hill is facing a lengthy suspension, one that could cost him 6-8 games or an entire calendar year. It'll be Hill's third suspension in as many seasons, though he does plan to appeal. Whether he wins that appeal or not isn't expected to matter in terms of saving his job with the Giants. The team is reportedly "livid" at Hill's continued drug issues. He was PFF's No. 2 overall safety in 2013.

Crap! I guess better now than having him stay clean, get a huge payday, then get wrapped up in drugs. He is blowing millions. Some team will probably sign him if the Giants cut him but he won't get a big contract when he can't stay away from the drugs.

That hurts. Unfortunately I agree and the "Giant" thing to do is let him go. His character issues have been consistent his whole life and it appears as if he has no intent on giving it up. If there were any year to lose a very good player in the secondary, this would be it due to all the recent signings.

Really sucks. What a waste.

But it's time to bite the bullet and find a guy that will better the team. Bummer.

I guess Demps will be more than just a return man now

So with Hill gone I think our safeties look like this

A. Rolle

Q. Demps

Stevie Brown

Cooper (forget his 1st name)

Am I missing anyone?

New York Giants Offseason Program Media Day: Recap and Memorable Momentshttp://www.bigblueinteractive.com/2014/04/22/new-york-giants-offseason-program-media-day-recap-memorable-moments/

Day Two of the New York Giants Offseason Program: Tuesday was day two of the New York Giants nine-week offseason workout program. The Giants are currently in “phase one” of the program (April 21 – May 4) with activities limited to voluntary strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation.

BigBlueInteractive.com will soon publish a number of feature articles based on today’s content, but here are some brief highlights:

  • Guard Chris Snee wasted no time before cracking the first joke of the day. When the 32-year-old was asked about all of the new faces, he responded, “I requested a team photo” in order familiarize himself with the team. Snee said the new offense is “different” from what he’s used to. Snee said he has been given no indication that he will be held back as he recovers from offseason hip and elbow surgery. Snee said has no limitations and is 100 percent.
  • Safety Antrel Rolle said he “loved” what has been done with the secondary this offseason and the goal during this portion of the offseason program is to build chemistry. When asked about cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Rolle said he feels that Rodgers-Cromartie, in his seventh year, has matured, and is a huge addition to the defense. With defensive end Justin Tuck in Oakland, Rolle was asked if he will take on any additional leadership roles: “I’m just go out there and play ball. I just know how to be Antrel…I think there should be 53 leaders on this team.”
  • Will Hill, who reportedly will be suspended by the NFL for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing or abusive substances, was was not made available to the media. Several players offered their support to the troubled safety.
  • Defensive end Robert Ayers said one of the main reasons that he decided to come to New York was the tradition and opportunity. Also, his late father, who passed away last year, said he used to wish Ayers would play for the New York Giants. Ayers also said that he plans on playing a bunch of different positions as it is what the management and coaches want. “They ask everyone to do everything….I look forward to doing whatever they ask me to do.”
  • Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul caught the attention of everyone when he alerted the media that he now weighed in at 270 pounds, down from the 285 pounds he played at last season. If you remember, Head Coach Tom Coughlin has made several comments in the past about Pierre-Paul being overweight. “I feel good at that weight,” said Pierre-Paul. After rehabbing his shoulder over the offseason, Pierre-Paul said he’s 100 percent right now and expects no limitations. Also, when asked if his role will change with Tuck in Oakland, Pierre-Paul said, “Not at all.” Pierre-Paul said he “didn’t get the memo” on Will Hill. Pierre-Paul said if Hill misses time, losing Hill would be a blow, but the defense would be “alright.”
  • Quarterback Eli Manning talked to the media in a walking boot. He said the surgery on his ankle went well and things are progressing very quickly. Manning told the media that with this being his first surgery, he’s being smart with it. Manning said when he started his training and running for the season he could tell something wasn’t right. He went for some additional MRI’s and developed a plan to see what was the best way to approach the injury. After consideration, he and the doctors felt surgery was best bet rather than waiting. “This will ensure I’m back at 100 percent for training camp,” said Manning. Prior to his informal workouts at Duke University, Manning had gotten a cortisone shot. He felt that once that wore off the injury and pain would return.
  • Left tackle Will Beatty said that the doctors have all given him positive reports and he’s “out here moving around.” Beatty said that he is hanging on every word from the doctors and doing whatever they say. He said that because the team has not gone full-contact, he hasn’t tested himself in that regard. Beatty said he plans on being 100 percent by the start of the season but was more non-committal about being ready for the start of training camp. Beatty talked about new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, saying he’s very “Energetic” and has “a lot of positive things to add to the team.” Beatty said that McAdoo came in the first day and told the team, “Our goal is to be a top-four offense, have an elite top-four QB, make it to the Super Bowl.”
  • Right tackle Justin Pugh talked to the media and said the new offense is similar to the one he ran in Syracuse and “I’m very comfortable in it.” He said, “It’s up-tempo and we’re going to be moving the ball.” Coughlin had told Pugh that he wanted him heavier, so he gained 10 pounds, he’s up to 315. “I’m stronger than ever,” said Pugh.
  • Cornerback Walter Thurmond III may have brought some of Richard Sherman’s personality with him to New York. The corner said he views himself as “the best slot corner in the league” and said the Giants secondary can be as good, if not better, than Seattle’s “Legion of Boom.”Thurmond says he looks forward to matching up with the Redskins now that they have Desean Jackson. He also said the difference between New York and Seattle: “Guys are a bit older here.” Thurmond got a solid laugh out of the media when asked the similarities between cornerbacks Prince Amukamara and Richard Sherman saying, “They’re a little different,” before bursting into laughter.
  • Wide receiver Rueben Randle has a very, very soft voice, and it was a little tough to make out everything he was saying. What he did say is that his original plan was to attend Duke University with fellow wide receivers Mario Manningham and Victor Cruz, but “something came up.” From listening to Victor Cruz talk later in the day it seemed to be a family issue. He contacted Eli Manning to inform him once he became aware he could not participate in those workouts. Randle also went on to say that he is “ready” to step up as the starter. As far as the offense, Randle does not see much difference aside from the terminology.
  • Linebacker Jon Beason seems very comfortable with the New York media. He stated that he does feel that this is his defense as it “comes with the territory of being the signal caller and mike linebacker.” Beason said that he did his research before representing himself as his own agent in free agency. He said one of the reasons he wanted to be his own agent was he wanted to be “directly involved” and not “a little kid playing telephone.” There were other teams interested in Jon Beason’s services, but the Giants contacted Beason at 3:52 on Tuesday, only minutes before free agency began.
  • Quarterback Josh Freeman talked to the media for an extended period of time. He said he feels great coming in and last year, “Didn’t turn out how I had hoped.” He said he can’t pinpoint what has caused his career to go downhill since being considered one of the best quarterbacks in the league. “A couple things just didn’t go my way.” One of the things that drew Freeman to New York was the history and tradition, but also to learn things from Eli Manning.
  • Wide receiver Victor Cruz said he enjoys the new offense. It’s a “high-powered offense” and “high octane.” Also, Cruz said the offense in similar with the type of routes and compared it to Green Bay’s offense. Cruz was asked if he could tell at Duke University if Eli was impacted by his ankle injury. He said he could not and “it may have been something he was battling internally.”Cruz said he has taken on a stronger leadership role, including grabbing some of the younger guys, taking them off to the side, and “letting them know how valuable they are to this team and the receiving corp.” Cruz went on to say that the new offense is based less off of body language.
  • Running back David Wilson was excited and as animated as ever. In January, Wilson underwent a surgical procedure to fuse vertebrae to repair a herniated disc in his neck. Wilson said he expects to be cleared for Organized Team Activities (OTAs) but admitted it will come down to the doctors. Wilson said he feels great, and all that is holding him back “is a picture” (MRI) allowing him to resume his football career. Wilson was asked if he sees himself as a No. 1 back and he said he does, but in today’s NFL the feature back doesn’t exist. “Way the game is played today, it’s not gonna be one guy,” said Wilson.
  • Running back Rashaad Jennings said that he thinks the backfield has a lot of talent and potential. He said all are trying to “mesh into the system” and they will “spend a lot of extra time as a unit.”

Looks like the Giants have 5 primetime games this season

Monday night season opener at Detroit

Thursday at Washington

Sunday night at Philly

Monday night against Indy

Sunday night against Dallas

NYG homers: I keep seeing mocks of them picking either a DLman or TE Ebron in the 1st this. While those may indeed be needs, didn't Eli get pummelled repeatedly last year? Were there multiple OL injuries last year? Shouldn't drafting an OLman in the 1st be a priority to keep Eli upright? TIA

Because the Giants have so many needs they can truly take the best player available at 12.

The O line certainly has room for improvement but what do they do if the big three tackles (Robinson, Matthews and Lewan) are off the board? Do they draft Martin ND or Kouandjio Alabama at 12?

Ebron is the only TE with a 1st round grade but many think he won’t last until 12

The draft experts say that there aren’t many high quality pass rushers available in the draft. Donald from Pitt has been linked to the Giants but he is a DT and many don’t think he will be there at 12 either.

I guess I wrote all of that to say I have no idea what the Giants are going to do. I’m pretty sure they aren’t going to draft a QB, RB, CB, P or K at 12 but that is all I am sure of at this point

Remember the draft is more than just the 1st round so they can upgrade the O-line even if they don't address it with their 1st pick. I think this draft is deep with O-line and WR

I have gone on record in previous threads that this would be a very bad move. As sexy as that pick looks, it is way down the list of what the Giants should do.
:goodposting:

ETA - I would be surprised if he is still available at 12 anyway.
I agree Evans is probably going to be gone before #12 and that we have more pressing needs than WR

But for ####s & giggles let’s say he isn’t gone but these guys (Matthews, Lewan, Robinson, Ebron, Donald, Clowney, Watkins, and Mack) are gone

Who would you want the Giants to draft instead of Evans?

I have gone on record in previous threads that this would be a very bad move. As sexy as that pick looks, it is way down the list of what the Giants should do.
:goodposting:

ETA - I would be surprised if he is still available at 12 anyway.
I agree Evans is probably going to be gone before #12 and that we have more pressing needs than WR

But for ####s & giggles let’s say he isn’t gone but these guys (Matthews, Lewan, Robinson, Ebron, Donald, Clowney, Watkins, and Mack) are gone

Who would you want the Giants to draft instead of Evans?
They would probably have some trade opportunities in that case and I would trade back a little and target someone like Zack Martin or Jernigan or trade back to the end of the 1st if it means they can get an extra 1st or 2nd round pick for this year or next and target someone like Amaro or Moses or Hageman.

It's Clowney 1st and then the rest.

LT is a major need for the Giants and I don't think that you could pass up an opportunity to get a franchise LT with the 12 pick in the draft ... Some people are saying Lewan is as good or better than Fisher who went #1 last year and Lewan is the 3rd ranked LT this season. You would have to give me a lot in return to pass up either of those 3 LTs

I would take them in this order

  • Clowney
  • Matthews - Is the surest pick of the 3 LTs and can play any position ... I read that he could even be a great center.
  • Lewan - The size, athleticism and the mean streak plus the level of competition that he faced
  • Robinson - Sounds like he could potentially be the best of the 3 but I don't like the word potential when referring to a top 12 pick.
  • Watkins - Not a major need but too good to pass up
  • Ebron - Major need that could be too good to pass up ...If he was a better blocker I would take him ahead of Watkins
  • Donald - His highlights were amazing. Should be an immediate replacement for Joseph
  • Mack - I'm not blown away by his highlights and the fact that he played against lesser competition - I'm not sold

Will the Giants pick up the 5th year on Prince?

http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2014/04/the_prince_amukamara_dilemma_giants_must_decide_on_fifth-year_option.html

Tough choice for the Giants I think they should pick up the option because I think Prince is trending up as a corner.

What do you guys think?
I think they should pick it up too. It looks like he keeps improving. I hope this is a big year for him.
Giants picked up the option on Prince

3 picks to go and Lewan, Martin and Donald left. Would be happy with any of them, but my order would be Donald > Martin > Lewan

Not a fan of the pick, just by position / need.

Chance to really solidify either line and ignore that? Ugh.

Wow, Beckham. Didn't see it coming, but I like it as long as the OL and DL can play reasonably well this year. There is some good depth at OL and DL so hopefully they address that the rest of the draft.
