2015 Oakland Raiders Thread (2 Viewers)

It pains me to say it, but I really think the L.A. deal is our best bet to contend in the near future.

Oakland just can't support an NFL team, hell, Oakland can't even support a full police force.
The $20M/year the city pays to the Raiders because we got fleeced by Al Davis 20 years ago would go a long way towards hiring police officers. Don't let the grapevine hit you in the butt on your way back to LA.

Oh my lord. Knighton signed for 1 year, $4 mill in WAS.

I can practically smell the stench over my broadband. Talk about no one thinking he was worth anything.
And yet the Raiders couldn't land him. Awful.

Understand the liquidity issues, and agree that the best path for this team lies in someone else's hands and not Mark Davis. But hard to see why we weren't just as aggressive in any of the trades that landed positional needs like Marshall, Ngata, and Graham elsewhere. We may not have been the team these guys ultimately landed on, but I am not sure how committed Davis and Reggie are in exploring all options on a team that desperately needs any and all of them.

its pretty obvious that players have other options and chose them over the Raiders...money be damned

My guess is that they don't want to go back to the old philosophy or mortgaging the future by trading draft picks and signing albatross contracts. Seems like they may actually be committed to building through the draft and making smart free agent acquisitions.

One would think that looking at all the former free agency splashes, that are now being used as throw-in in deals, or being outright cut, people wouldn't call for the highest priced guys, but I guess not.

Miami just traded for Kenny Stills, cost them a third and Danell Ellerbe, so Wallace might be on his way to being cut.

Wow. The suspension is still looming and obviously there are serious character concerns, along with potential P.R. nightmares. But he won't be 27 until July, will probably come at a discount and dude is a P-L-A-Y-E-R.

So, is he worth pursuing?
It appears the NFL is collectively waiting for the NFL offices to resolve his status. I mean, look at the other names left in free agency, his name sticks out, talent-wise.
Which is why the Raiders should strike now. Leveraging this fact would let them guarantee less money but build in roster bonuses in future year(s) to make it back. He's gonna be suspended X games anyway, so he should be willing to make 2015 salary lower since he's gonna lose 1/2 of it to suspension. Keeps him motivated

Fred Biletnikoff's daughter was beaten an murdered by her boyfriend. Domestic abuse is a thing the Raiders have been clear they aren't standing for. Mark said so in a radio interview a few days ago.

Trading Mike Wallace: $6.6M in dead cap to the #Dolphins 3yr/$32.9M, $3M g'teed deal for the new team; new caps: 9.9/11.5/11.5 Unlikely.

I doubt Wallace or hardy are on the radar.
If there is only 3M g'teed then a team could trade for him and only keep him for 2015 season. Low draft pick compensation like the Percy Harvin trade to the Jets. Of course, they would get Wallace for a full season rather than just part of one.

Correct. Taking on Mike Wallace is a capologist nightmare.
Not at all. Only 3M guaranteed, so pretty much the same boat as Harvin, can cut him next year with no consequences. For a team that can't get talent because they can't afford the up-front, and one that MUST spend a bunch of dough, this is EXACTLY the kind of swing they need to take. He's more talented than most of the WR they have, so take a chance. After about week 5 his guaranteed cash is paid out so even if he's terrible there's no long-term consequence. Maybe he's decent and sees what happened to Harvin and does take a reduced 2016 number. Maybe he doesn't. So what? It costs next to nothing to take the chance.

Wow Raiders gonna Raiders.

Schefter reporting Oakland gets ADP for 2015 and 2016 1st round picks.

Not the best example, if you're trying to convince anyone.

Most likely, he's gonna be free soon, and he quit on the team last year. Simply not the kind of player the team looking to bring in.

Every FA season you give this terrific perspective and every year it seems to fall on deaf ears around here. It seems like just yesterday Miami gave Wallace and Ellerbe huge FA deals and now look at them.

The old adage is that the draft is a crap shoot, but FA seems just as much so, with high-first-round-type repercussions coming with guaranteed big money deals. That's why you only give them to high character guys IMO. I'm not opposed to big money for character risks, just not guaranteed big money over multiple seasons. Problem is high-character marquee FAs generally don't want to play in Oakland and won't until this ship turns, so they'll have to turn it without them for at least a few more years.

Who quit on his team last year?

Really, do the Raiders strike you as a team that needs this type of guy? With a great rookie class, and passable vets out there, doesn't seem like their kind of move.

If he comes in for 3 mill per year, fine. Trading for him, and paying ten mill? Nah

After dropping that turd I have to congratulate your team on not being silly enough to overpay Gresham (which is what I assume must be happening since you have broken off talks with him for now). Too many dumb false starts, too many dumb drops, no longer breaks tackles. If you get him, it should be at bargain rate.

Ok. I thought you were talking about Percy Harvin.

    .@RavensInsider: Nate Allen Raiders deal: 4-yr, $23M, $11.8M gtd, $4M bonus, salaries $2.9M, $4.9M, $5.85M, $4.85M, 2015 base full gtd

We'll see how this guy does. Biggest cap number is this year, like Hudson, if they cut him next March, no cap hit.

Combined first-year CASH on #Raiders' deals with UFAs Lee Smith, Rodney Hudson, Malcolm Smith, Dan Williams and Nate Allen: $35.35 million.

Signed James Dockery, CB, Carolina. I know nothing about him, but it seems top 4 CB are Hayden, Carrie, Dockery, McGill in some order.

I'm not sure what the grapevine comment was intended to imply, but don't get me wrong, my entire family is in the Bay Area and we are ALL Raider fans.

My first cousin was even a Raiderette for many years and is still affiliated with the team as a choreographer for the girls.

Suffice it to say that we are dyed in the wool fans with no ties to L.A. Going back to the very beginning, and we really don't want to see the team leave the area (again).

Regardless I stand by my statement that in order to generate new revenue, and to facilitate the attraction of top talent, the Raiders would do well to find a way to get that deal done.

Do you see a better solution?

It does suck that Al "fleeced" the Oakland locals, as you say, but I really don't see a better solution right now, short of MD selling the team. There is obviously plenty of money in the Bay... The Google Raiders? The Apple Raiders? Yahoo! the Raiders!? I'm all for it. I just don't see anyone beating down the door to buy the team. It sucks, but that's the reality as I see it.

Rotoworld:

Raiders signed QB Christian Ponder, formerly of the Vikings.
Ponder has ties to Raiders OC Bill Musgrave and is the favorite to back up Derek Carr, where he'll likely be competing with Matt McGloin. His signing makes Matt Schaub expendable. The Raiders can save $5.5 million by cutting Schaub.
