2015 Oakland Raiders Thread (1 Viewer)

Nobody disputes Williams' natural ability or that he's the best D-lineman in this draft. However, I have two concerns, having watched USC play every week. One, I distinctly remember him getting stupid personal fouls on consecutive plays. I guess anyone can lose their cool, but it was a concern. Also, does he want to be great? I don't see the "high motor" on every play. If he's stuck in an atmosphere of losing, I worry about this kid going down the rabbit hole mentally.

I watched probably the most college tape of any Williams than any of the other prospects we are considering. And I share your concern about taking plays off. I didn't see him take plays off from the snap, but I did see him jog out plays after the ball left the QB's hand instead of pursue downfield. I don't see the same explosion or immediate swim move when he lines up as DE as when he lines up as DT. Inside, the guy is a dominant force. He causes havoc in the run game and regularly penetrates the backfield. But outside, he's a little too tentative to make his move waiting for the play to develop. No doubt he's got the physical tools, but will need to be coached up to reach the level of some of the analysts who try to compare him to Watt and Suh. Potential's there, but he could be another Gerald McCoy. And that's pretty darn good too. But his hype is being oversold right now. If we get him, I'm not going to complain. He's good. Was just hoping for Mr. Cooper.

I'm with you guys on questioning the LW hype, but I derive optimism from the following:

1. He played hurt the last couple years. Torn labrum in each shoulder plus a high ankle sprain. These are not insignificant injuries and could help explain why he wasn't as consistently dominant as he is being hyped to be. Also a good sign that the guy was willing to play hurt.

2. He's 20 years old. This guy probably isn't done growing and most likely doesn't have his grown man strength yet. What will he be like in three years if he stays healthy?

3. I have faith in McKenzie and Del Rio to identify whether or not he's worth the opportunity cost of selecting him. If they vouch for him, I have confidence that he is the real deal.

I almost want to see what happens if the first three picks are Winston, Cooper & Williams.
I've actually wondered the same thing over the last week or so. I could see the draft going Winston, Williams, Cooper. Then what?

Hopefully the Raiders have already been in talks with teams that are hot for Mariotta. Philly is supposedly ready to offer #20, #19 (which they'd get by trading Bradford to Cle), Fletcher Cox and another player (Evan Mathis, Mykal Kendricks, others on the table).

I would strongly consider that offer. Cox is already what we are hoping Williams might be. If Mathis is healthy he would be a huge upgrade at OG, freeing up our 3rd rounder, which most seem to be projecting to be an OG. Plus we'd get two first rounders to find some other pieces. How about this:

Cox

Mathis

trade 1.19 and 1.20 to move up to 1.10 to take Randy Gregory

3.04 Tyler Lockett
I think this nails it. If Williams and Cooper are off the board then we will have takers to trade down and not only takers but likely a bidding war for Marriota. But I have a feeling the Titans are working hard to trade down for a Marriota taker.

Williams is the guy that posted a pick of him in Silver and Black, right? If you have a guy that WANTS to be a part of your team that badly (something we have not had in a long time) then I wonder if that off sets other questions. I mean, if you really want to be a Raider, that means you would try your hardest when you are there, no?

He went to high school in Daytona Beach. He told Pat and Jim last night that he'd love to play in Jacksonville. He'll love playing for whomever pays him.

And he is probably the best player in the draft. I still want Williams over Cooper, but I would not be upset if they took Cooper. If both are gone I am good with Fowler. I would be very hesitant to trade down unless they got a really really good offer since there seems to be probably 5 elite players in this draft.

Great position to be in with two can't-miss players to choose from. I think Cooper is a little more 'can't miss' and would take him but LW looks like a great one.

Randy Gregory on ESPN just now.

He looks like a high school small forward declaring for the draft. No idea what this guy is gonna do with NFL offensive tackles.

Some medical questions raised about my dream 2nd rounder Odighizuwa and his hips.

This La'el Collins thing, if he's not involved, is awful for him. Going to cost him money he'll never get back. Some are saying he won't be drafted at all.

Read that his agent is trying to get him pulled from the draft, clear his name and then enter into the suppliment draft.

For me, reading how Branch and Brown love this guy and want us to draft him sold me. I want Cooper. If Tim Brown says he is more polished and NFL ready than he was coming out of ND back in the day then sign me up.

Check out the latest Around the League podcast. Daniel Jeremiah was on, and questions about Leo Williams' motor was brought up.

Jeremiah is about as polite and easy going as a guy you'll find. He, snorted, and gave a dismissive, "Ha, no." The hosts actually scrambled a bit, they were expecting a longer answer. He gave the same answer one would give if someone had asked him if Williams was actually a unicorn.

If Williams and Cooper are there at #5 I bet we could squeeze something out of Washington for Williams (I think Wash really wants Williams) and still get Cooper at #5.

The thought of Williams and Mack anchoring the front seven for the next 4-5 (10?) years should give all Raider fans serious wood. I'm talking teak, man.

I see this scenario playing out in the Nation if they pick Williams

Philly pushing hard to get mariota. Makes me wonder if Tampa and Tennessee don't bite. Will they offer a kings ransomed to the Raiders?

Falcons would be ideal trade parter for Raiders, if they want to swap 8 for 4 for a specific defensive player.

15 minutes until we can breathe. Late in Al's life, my only concern was "Please don't make a pick that's gonna get us laughed at by everyone!!!"

Now I have faith that the brain-trust will do the right thing.
