2016 Green Bay Packers thread (1 Viewer)

Anyone have any opinion on Makinton Dorleant? I love his speed 4.39 forty and was a man to man coverage guy with a bunch of pass break-ups last year. There is no possible way he can be worse and reading some of his comments he sounds confident. Hope he's on the field this Sunday.

To bring Lacy back for me I would want it to be on a shorter contract (2-3 years) and would have to come in around $1.5 mil per season.  If someone wants to pay more I would rather say goodbye.
Someone will pay Lacy more than 1.5m per year, for sure

A conservative game plan in a week where that might have been prudent.  I hope we see a continuing shift away from Starks. Next week may tell the tale. I hope the game plan this week was a reflection of the weather and caution with Rodger's hammy.  Next eek I would like to see something more akin to last week's attack mode.  I hope Christian Michael is motivated for revenge, and that he can give us some pointers on Seattle.

This year's draft is looking better and better to me, as is last year's.  Still, there must be another step or two forward, immediately, in both draft classes.

Loving the Ripper.

Well they once again looked strong against a mediocre team.  This week, I'm worried though.  Seattle has long been their kryptonite.

This will be a very tough week with a gimpy Rodgers. That Rawls kid is explosive also and we got no one to cover Graham this is a bad week to play Seattle if you are GB.

Yeah I think it's going to be tough sledding this week.  A good litmus test though.  If you can't beat Seattle at home, you have zero shot in the playoffs against Dallas, Seattle, and Washington.

I wouldn't say zero.  But this is definitely the worst product Ted and Mike have put on the field since working together.

After looking at things a  little closer I agree.  He might be closer to 4 mil.  I wouldn't have an issue with getting rid of Starks and bringing Lacy back on a 1-2 year deal at around 4 mil per year.  I think they need to find their next replacement for Lacy but I would rather rid this team of Starks and Michael, bring Lacy back on a preferably 1 year deal and then add a cheap free agent or draft a RB or two in the mid or late rounds.  The biggest issue is this team has enough to address that I don't think they can let Lacy go if he can be brought back on a dhort term reasonable deal.

Yeah they need to go a new direction at RB.  You saw this season what happens when you neglect that position.  Time to start over.  Lacy simply cannot carry the load.

Seems RBs as big as Lacy get hurt more often.   No stats to back that up.  Maybe Lacy is just prone to injuries?   GB needs a running game bad right now to keep their defense off the field & to keep Rogers out of the hospital.

After looking at things a  little closer I agree.  He might be closer to 4 mil.
Here's the cap hits for 2017 RBs:

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/2017/cap-hit/running-back/

Notice Starks is making 3.75 next year...

1.5 would put him in the same range as Theo Riddick or Alfred Morris. Not happening. It's the range Starks should be in TBH.

Had Lacy stayed healthy he was on pace to have a good enough year that would have put him in the 5-7 mil a season range. Lamar Miller's contract likely would have been a very close benchmark.

Since he did get hurt, and there is that along with his weight gain, I am not sure a team would pay over 5 mil a season. If I'm GB I cut Starks and pay Lacy kind of like how they did Peppers. If you give him more guaranteed money up front, then you are protecting yourselves so if he falters you can release him and move on without much of a cap hit. I would expect a 1 or 2 year deal with Lacy to be reached. I think this would require about 5.5 million though... Lacy playing his prime years for a short contract means something in the negotiation process.

A franchise tag would cost GB slightly north of 8.5 million.

At 31 I'm not sure starks even belongs in the NFL anymore.

I say start from scratch with the RBs next season.  This is the one position that has consistent success for rookies.  You'd think Ted would pay attention to that.  You don't draft a safety and start him at corner as a rookie.  You can do it with running backs though.

Lacy can take his 500 yards per season and hit the road.

Starks is no longer a competent NFL RB.  He's looked washed up all year.  Next to zero chance they bring him back.

With Lacy its going to come down to what another team is willing to offer.  I'd be shocked if the Packers went with a long term deal with him.  I doubt they'd go more than 10 million on a 2 year deal.

Shields and Peppers are done too.  Shields will cost them $3.125M in dead money, but there's just no way they can count on him as a starter for 2017, and he's not worth the risk of the $9M they owe him for the year.  Cutting him saves them $9M in cap space.

Peppers is off the books for 2017 too.  He's counting 10M in cap space right now.

Starks' cap his for 2016 is $3.75M

I'd also seriously think about trading or cutting Randall Cobb.  He just hasn't been very good since signing that contract, and he's due to collect $9.5M in each of the next two years in salary and bonuses.  It would be a bit of a painful $6.5M dead cap hit to take, but I'd much rather see Montgomery getting those targets.  Cutting him this offseason saves them $6.25M on next years cap.

That would add $15M to the $25M they are already under the 2017 cap with.  Total of $40M.

My first priority would be to sign Nick Perry.  He's and Daniels have been our two best defenders.  Then I'd approach Ha-Ha about an extension, and Davante Adams too.  I'd also look a signing TJ Lang to a similar contract as Josh Sitton.  $2M signing bonus, $7M per season. 3 years 21M. Pay as you go basically.  They pretty clearly would need to prioritize CB, RB in the draft and FA.

Most of your post I agree with to some extent, but 100% disagree with this. Cobb is an excellent receiver, he has the whole route tree and he's tough to tackle. Montgomery on the other hand is excellent out of the backfield and that's where it ends. I am not sure he has ever caught a pass more than 10-15 yards passed the line of scrimmage. Screens and the quick slants and now running the ball I'm fine with, but he can't catch a pass downfield and no way in hell he could replace Cobb.

These last few weeks have been a fun distraction.  However I think this week is going to be a cold glass of water in the face.  Wilson is exactly the kind of QB that is going to beat up on our secondary.  Smart, athletic, and disciplined.

Prediction for Final: 35-24 Seattle.

A little something for Sabertooth. Two weeks in a row of the Journal Sentinel writers hammering Randall:

http://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/nfl/packers/mcginn/2016/12/05/mcginn-rating-packers-vs-texans/95005760/

" Randall, in his second game back from a groin injury, was mediocre. He was out of position on Alfred Blue’s 25-yard run down the sideline. When Griffin beat Burnett on a crossing route, Randall was in position to tattoo him but gave him a shoulder tap and off he went for another 5 yards. Micah Hyde (26), the dime safety over Kentrell Brice (zero), whiffed trying to get Hopkins down on his 44-yard TD. However, Randall was there as well but seemed to stand down as if to let Hyde make the tackle. That just cannot continue."

In other words, playing like a little #####.

So now Pennel out for another 4 games and Perry hurting and likely done, on top of Mathews, Ryan and Martinez all dinged.  I am one to hope, but at this point it seems clear that any further winning will only hurt draft position.  A team this injured is not really going to be making any post season noise.

Even if they weren't injured, they likely wouldn't be making any post season noise. This team is built to be mediocre and that's what we see

No this is clearly a fluke thing that you can't really pin on anyone.

Oddly enough, this could significantly help the Packers in the long term. Finishing the year on the IR doesn't really help your negotiating in the offseason for a contract. He could very well come back to the Packers at a better price.

This is a significant blow to that defense though. Less pressure on opposing QBs, more pressure on our DBs who are already struggling to make it through 60 minutes

I'm with you Dr. Brew. I believe Peppers is done after this season. And if Perry isn't coming back, they are leaving themselves awfully thin at OLB. They need an infusion of pass rush in that position no matter what. I'm hoping they can bring Perry back in a cheap contract and bring more talent in to solidify the OLB spot.

Friends in Chicago are saying tickets for next weekend are available below face value. Prices will likely only go down between now and gameday. I always love going to Soldier Field and this is a rare opportunity to get in cheap.

Again...but of Badger homerism, but how good would TJ Watt look in green and gold?

I don't see this particular injury to Perry as having any affect on off-season negotiations or his market value. It's a couple of broken bones in his hand. No long term consequences to his play. Maybe if it was a knee injury. More important to his market value is that he has never played a full-season.

Good luck today, Pack fans. Hoping we have a fun and clean game as opposed to the craziness we've seen in the recent past when our teams meet.

Same to you...hope the Packers show up for this one.

Defense is so beat up I just hope we can slow Wilson down some.

Injuries, injuries, and more injuries, when will it stop?

Rodgers was studly.

Randall and Rollins both showed continued improvement.

If the Packers need a coach to teach ones left from his right I am available.  I am an experienced father and grandfather and have been able to communicate the concept flawlessly multiple times.

No help for the Packers this week in the outcomes of other games.  On to the Bears.  I wish Cutler was playing. My Favorite Packer Quarterbacks, in order are Starr, Rodgers, Dickey, Cutler, and Favre.

Pretty quiet in here this week. That's three straight wins, and a resounding thumping of Seattle when everyone had written this team off.

Rodger was on fire. I hope he continues to heal up, because he's on a roll.

Speaking of written off, Davante Adams continues to show well. He's proving that last year's hype was warranted. Were it not for injury last season, I believe he would've shown this earlier. He's proving to be tough to cover. Also made a fabulous block on Sherman to help spring the Janis TD. http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap3000000755459/Seahawks-vs-Packers-highlights (Around 5:40 is a wonderful highlight.)

Randall looked way better in coverage. His closing speed on the end of first half pick was impressive. I also saw him throw his body at Rawls on at least on occasion. Didn't work as a tackle, but better effort than we'd seen.

I like Burnett at LB in obvious passing situations.

The RB committee appears to be better. Montgomery and Michael have the makings of a great 1-2 punch. Different running styles that can compliment each other well.

Here's to hoping they roll into Chicago and take care of business.

I just keep feeling like the bottom is going to fall out.  Or worse, they go 10-6 and miss the playoffs.
I hear you. I watched that game Sunday waiting for the Seattle come back. It never happened.

Green Bay played with more fire and energy than they have all season. If they can bottle that up, they're on to something.

To your point, I hope the hole they put themselves in isn't too deep. I'd rather take the higher draft pick if you know the outcome is missing the playoffs.

They looked very goo yesterday.  Rodgers has been hot and when he is going well this team can play with anyone.  They have a good shot at running the table.  That's all very positive and of course we still carry the same worries.  Can the defense hold up?  Can we get any pash rush with Matthews and Perry hurting?  Can the CB step up and play solid football?  Can we run the ball if needed with Michael and Montgomery?  I really feel like Rodgers and Adams are the key to the offense.  Jordy is still solid but I don't think he is the same WR he was prior to injury.  Adams seems to be the guy to be able to get open consistently.

The thing I like about Adams block on Sherman is that earlier in the game Sherman was a punk ### ##### blocking Adams down, in the back, from behind as an irrelevancy to the play at hand.  Sherman did it because Adams was beating his ###.  Adams didn't lose his ####, he bided his time, and then punked Sherman as an essential element of a play coming directly his way.

Agreed.  It think it's pretty obvious who the number 1 wideout is for the Packers now.
