2016 Green Bay Packers thread (1 Viewer)

As long as Rodgers is on the field....

They need to beat Sam Glassford & Pad Statford sticking out his middle finger.

My money is on Rodgers.

I'm most concerned with the Packer defense.

That toupe' wearing DC needs to go. No more Domfense.

I appreciate the Super Bowl win but that was 6 years ago. Time for a change.

I'd agree. The defense will be their downfall, either during the regular season or the playoffs. Wouldn't mind seeing Capers go but I think they need a lot more talent on that side of the ball. I don't see Shields coming back. Could use some DBs. Could also use another player (or 2 or 3) to put pressure on the QB.

Clay is hurt & gutting it out. Peppers is old. Nick Perry being out hurts. He was/is having a great season.

Re: Shields. Him being out is more than a concussion. There's off the field issues involved that haven't come out yet.

You can't tell me it's only a concussion. Jordan Reed has had eleventy billion concussions & he keeps coming back.

TT will draft more chickens for the barn in 2017.

I hope they can continue to run the table this year. It's been fun & nobody wants to face them in the playoffs.

If they get in, they'll be a tough out as usual.

Capers stays or goes, doesn't really matter to me.

They've rebuilt the ILB position to an extent, and I think they can be fine there with Thomas, Ryan, and Martinez.

I'm of the belief that pass rush makes the all the difference for corners. As such, I'd be looking for another OLB to pressure the QB first. Then look CB.

Agreed 100%

So I gathered that two Packer's o-linemen where hurt immediately preceding the heave to Jordy.  Any news there?  I also gathered Thomas and Ryan were seen gimpy once or twice during the game, how about info on that.

Lane Taylor: http://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/football/news/packers-lane-taylor-injures-hip-in-week-15/

Taylor injured his hip late in Sunday's victory over the Bears, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports.
Taylor was not on the field for the key 60-yard pass from Aaron Rodgers to Jordy Nelson that set up the game-winning field goal late in Sunday's game, but he indicated after the contest that he did not suffer any sort of serious injury, so the setback may not cost him any further action.

TJ Lang: http://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/football/news/packers-tj-lang-has-strained-muscle-in-neck/

Lang has a strained muscle in his neck and upper back but expects to be fine, Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports.
Lang is notorious for toughing out injuries, and he seems as though he is ready to play through this one as well as the Packers make a playoff push. He should play against the Vikings in Week 16.

Nothing on Ryan, other than his ruined helmet.

Joe Thomas suffered a shoulder injury. No word from Packers on status.

Martinez was gimpy because he's not far removed from his sprained MCL. I don't think he played a lot, and he's not 100%.

Thank you Man in the Yellow Hat.  I have always admired the way you are patient with us inexperienced chimps, the way you help us find the information we need, the perspective we need.  One question.  Many times I have seen pictures of you driving your roadster.  How do you keep your hat on in the rushing air?

Randall needs a wake up call.  Glad the first round free pass is over.  He never had to earn anything and it shows.
He definitely needed to see the bench in that one.

On the one hand, I'm exercising patience with Randall. He's a very good athlete, as he demonstrated on the pick last week against Seattle. He's also trying to convert from Safety to Corner.

On the other hand, his tackling has been atrocious. At times, he appears completely lost as to where he is supposed to be on the field.

He was questionable last week with a groin. I'm wondering how much that is impacting him right now? He's not saying. The team's not saying. But it appears they may have rushed him back too.

I'm not sure where I stand on Randall. Lots of people were quick to write off Adams last season. Turns out the injury was a bigger issue than anyone knew. Could the same apply here?

The hat. Well, that's a secret I share with my monkey.

I think Lane tried to run back on to the field after the bomb, but Rodgers told him to stay off the field. I assume to keep the line in tact since it was a rush to get everyone down/lined up and ball spiked and avoiding any penalties.  Which is good we really can't afford to lose O-lineman (Not that any team can) with Aaron being gimpy.

Is that what was going on back there as Rodgers was hobbling slowly down the field?

I need a Packers fan to tell me why Dalvin Cook to Greenbay would be a good thing. I just don't see it. It's not like they would feature him. He would likely be splitting carries with Ty Montgomery his entire career. When was the last time Greenbay had a feature running back while McCarthy was head coach. I can't remember. Lacy has always split carries with Starks. Not to mention Rodgers would die without throwing it up 50 times per game. The way I see it, Greenbay is where running backs go to die.

Ahman Green has a fantastic career in GB.  Cook would be nice because he's such a good receiver out of the back field...something this offense has been sorely lacking for quick some time.  All this Cook talk was before Montgomery looked like a legit option at RB, when their RB cupboard was completely bare.  Now that's he's put together some nice (and a great one yesterday) games at least personally I'm not fully on board the Cook train like I was a few weeks ago.  I'd still like him though but I'm guessing and rightfully so they'll look at DB's early and often this upcoming draft.

Good point on receiving ability. Montgomery is a RB now, I don't think there is any doubt. If you can pair him 1-2 with Michael next season, that serves this offense very well. No need to draft one in that case.

As for where to look for help? While DB needs some talent, I'm looking pass rush first and second. Peppers may be done. Matthews can't stay healthy. Perry, I just don't know what you have there. They need guys that can bring pressure.

I would feel very good going into next year with Montgomery, Lacy and Michaels with Ripkowski at full back.  Starks has completely lost it.  I loved him in the past as a backup and third down receiving presence, but this year I have not seen him once not choose to run into a defender as opposed to running in the open lane designed by the play.  Simply unbelievable.

If I'm Montgomery I'm fighting to stay a WR just in terms of contract and career longevity.  RBs are the Dangerfield of positions.  They get no respect at all.  No way I'd allow myself to be fully converted if I didn't absolutely have to do it.

Some of Montgomery's runs yesterday looked highy improvised - almost like a chicken with its head cut off. He still has a lot to learn IMO. But thankfully, the Bears defense couldn't tackle a kikndergarten math problem. I would hate to see Lacy resigned because they will never run him into the ground like I think he needs to be and I would also hate a highly touted rookie to be sent there. Just my two cents. I hate Greenbay for RBs.

Where are all these uber talented running backs that have wasted away in Green Bay in recent years?  When they've had talent, and stayed healthy, they produced.

Being a running back is all about improvisation. You run the direction of the play call, read what's happening, and react accordingly. Montgomery has shown very good patience to setup blocks, excellent vision to find running lanes, and strength to break tackles (and throw some stiff arms.)

That said, this is a small sample size. But you have to like what you see so far. At 6', 220, he has a running back build.

His running style is completely different from a guy like Lacy.

TY also has the advantage of having the best player in (perhaps) the history of the NFL playing Quarterback and keeping defenses honest.  So he has that going for him, which is nice.

Ty did take a huge shot last game though when he was almost down, no chance to avoid it.  Those are the shots I worry about.

Id worry about such shots with most RBs.  Its not as if Ty is built like a tiny WR or anything.

Well it is nice to now be in the 6th slot for the playoffs as opposed to sitting two slots out.  Still, that slot is precarious. Need to put a quick and decisive whopping on the Vikes on Saturday and do so with no injuries, and ideally the ability to rest Rodger is the second half.  From there they can enjoy knowing that Detroit cannot even be thinking of them for another two days since their game with the Cowboys will not be over.  This time of year I will gladly take an extra two days of rest over an opponent, particularly when one has to be the traveling team.  It sort of evens things up a bit.

Yeah...that was the worst thing about giving up that TD when they were up 17 to start the 4th quarter.  Though...with a stop there, will they sit Rodgers.

Pretty tough thing to do unless the game is completely out of hand.
Sure...I think the way things were going, a 17 point lead part way into the 4th quarter would have been a good time for it.

Watching the game finally yesterday when we got back home...and after listening to some of the call in shows yesterday while in the car and reading a few things.

-This goes to previous complaints and heard some yesterday that don't make sense.  People complained in the past and even after Sunday's game that McCarthy got conservative again and that helped them come back.  Looking at the 4th quarter (and a few other times this year).  Didn't seem to be the case at all.  I think he actually was being more aggressive.  I think in a few of those stalled drives they only ran the ball once and were trying to throw it downfield some even.

- Montgomery really looked good running the ball.  He isn't a between the tackles 20+ carry a game pounder...but can definitely handle 10-15 carries and some receptions to go with it.  Sprikle in another back for 5-10 runs and I don't think McCarthy would even want to run the ball much more than that most games.

- The drops...Jordy and of course Adams.  Going to chalk it up to the cold this time, but that has to stop.

-Need to retain Cook.  He just has what they have been looking for at TE.

-D went conservative and just didn't make the plays and deserves being blamed...but the offense was shut down in the 4th quarter too.

-Oline wasn't as good...still was good and pressure/sacks were partially due to limited mobility by Rodgers.

-pass rush was nowhere for the Packers

- That throw to Jordy...damn!!!  And I still love seeing Jordy raise his hand on that as soon as he is basically even with the DB he is like...I got this, just put it up for me.

Another observation from the current hot streak vs. the losing.

They have relied so much this year on the short passes...which is nice to set up 3rd and short vs 3rd and long.  But they are then relying on being so good on 3rd down conversions.

Early in the losses it seems we get behind the sticks a bit more (especially in that TN game).

Where it seems we convert better early in the wins and that sets the tone.

Also a big one...and this was touched on by Tauscher on the radio and will give credit to McCarthy and Rodgers on this.

The gist was that McCarthy talked about the turnover battle and how that affects them.  4 losses we turned it over 6 times and only forced 2.  4 wins, turned it over once and forced 12.  McCarthy has apparently been emphasizing this and they go out and do it.

On Rodgers leadership was brought up.  Again in post game comments he said that he needs to be better in the 4th quarter and move the ball.  Didn't throw the defense under the bus giving up the lead.  Took responsibility for the offense not getting it done.  Id guess the D hears that and is appreciative of their QB for doing that.

So, Capers goes into his bag of tricks, and for the second time during this winning streak he uses the "run a fat guy on late" defense, and it works again.  The man is an innovator. Offenses are confused and frightened by the unorthodox look. Who knows what havoc a fat guy with momentum might cause.  I am hoping he renames it the Berserker defense.

Why would Montgomery not be a good pass catching back? After all he has caught a few passes in his life...

Just thought I'd share this for those that think McCarthy should go.

Mike Freeman's 10-Point Stance: Packers May Be as Good as We Thought They Were

Nice to see the high praise for Rodgers. But also an interesting perspective on McCarthy.
My issue with McCarthy is he could make it easier on himself with his play calling. Start of the season he relies on deep ball to move the offense, which is helped a lot by Rodgers buying time for the WRs. When it doesn't work he takes a while but goes to a shorter passing game that isn't exciting but team moves the ball. In this latest hot streak we saw more use of a FB and under center Rodger till he got hurt. I would like to know why he doesn't start season with more of these type of formations and play calls. McCarthy is always saying he wants to run the ball and use multiple TE looks. But to start the season those looks and plays are not there.

That this team controls its own playoff destiny shows how bad this division it. Caldwell is really poor coach and ever since Turner left the Vikings they have had issues.
