Damn.  Should've suspected that. Word out of Lawrence was there was no way they could pass Maker off as an amateur, so more of an Enes Kanter thing than a complete and total fraud thing.  

Methinks my SOD declaration for Maker made yesterday won't look so smart in 2-3 years.

 
Okafor for #3 I feel is less than his value but Collangelo will do whatever. Noel for #3 would be a pretty good deal. Trading Embiid at all like others said should be a sign that the sixers don't believe in him. If the sixers are to ever be a legit contender, it is primarily around a healthy Embiid playing at an elite level. 

 
Looks like Dunn may be the pick at 3 regardless of whether it's traded or not. Suns probably can't justify taking another 2 guard, right?

Jaylen Brown, 6'7" freshman forward, California: "Biggest mystery in the draft. What does he do? He's an average ballhandler. He's a below average shooter. In AAU and college he played bully ball, but that doesn't translate to the NBA. Little bit of a funky personality. I don't know that anybody really knows what makes that kid tick. His basketball IQ is lacking. Special physical specimen and athlete. The trouble is when you make him go multiple directions. His last month and a half was awful. Makes me really nervous."

Outstanding read.

Scouts really seem to be going out of their way to praise Brice Johnson.  Seemed a bit ambitious to project him as a competent NBA three-point shooter, but that's one heck of a player of he develops that shooting range.

Sadly, I agree with their takes on Diallo and Ellis.  Diallo couldn't shoot and kept messing up the defensive rotations, which is why he didn't play at KU.  There's a 9 RPG NBA player trapped inside that kid, GL to the coaching staff  tasked with finding it.  And Ellis just isn't an NBA player.  Classic college tweener forward without the handle to play SF or the muscle to play PF.  

I like Selden a bit more than the scouts did.  His shot release point is a little low but he has range.  He did a lot of defensive heavy lifting for a program that requires tough defense from its guards. He's strong enough to finish through bigger players at the hoop.  His overall lack of improvement from freshman to junior is a concern - he was the same recruiting class as Wiggins and Embiid and got overshadowed by those two.

I expect MN to play it safe and take Kris Dunn. 

If he's available. It seems picks 3-8 are interchangeable and could go a number of directions.

Apropos of nothing, Cowherd spent his show this morning berating the Celtics for how stupid they are in not trading the #3 and the #15 to the Lakers for the #2. Talk about your straw men. Reminded me why I try to avoid listening to him.

His take on Cat Barber:

Anthony "Cat" Barber, 6'3" junior guard, NC State: "Fastest guy in the draft. A small scoring point. I don't think he makes people better, but he has an ability to put the ball in the basket. He doesn't have an NBA three right now. He needs to be more of a ball hawk defensively. I don't know why he left college because he's not going to be a first round pick. If you leave because you're scared of the guy coming in behind you, how good are you really?"

Barber didn't leave because he is scared of Dennis Smith, Jr. DSJ never would have signed with State if it wasn't a given that Cat was leaving after his junior season. Cat has a daughter, which is the driver.

Other basketball-related drivers: (1) coming back would be more likely to hurt his stock than help it, given he was 1st team All ACC this year with a breakout season and he would be a year older (he is 21), and (2) next year's draft is supposed to be stronger.

Regarding not having an NBA three, I agree. But he really improved his shooting during his three years at State. His free throw shooting went from .696 (on 112 attempts) as a freshman to .865 (on 274 attempts) as a junior. His three point shooting went from .261 (on 46 attempts) as a freshman to .361 (on 119 attempts) as a junior. He also developed an excellent pull up/mid-range jump shot. The improvement he made in this area shows that he will work hard to improve his game, so there is reason to expect continued improvement.

The comment about not making others better also requires context. He was the only guard on State's roster last season, and he literally had no teammates who were above average offensive players... most were below average to terrible. That leads to some things that could lead a casual observer/evaluator to overstate this weakness: (1) the coach instructed him to shoot often, so he did, and (2) when he did pass off to teammates, they converted at a below average rate.

Anyway, it seems clear he will be a second round pick, but I expect him to be a solid NBA rotation player for many years.

The scared comment is so off base it makes me want to disregard this guy's take and doubt his other takes.

That is the local narrative right now...seems like Philly is pushing hard to make a move...if the C's want more I'm not sure what exactly Philly has that could sweeten the pot...draft picks are nice but they already have more than their fair share...

I'm scared in that I've read a few things that make it sound like it is more likely the Wolves move the pick instead of making a pick.  I much rather they take one of the available guards, than any of the names thrown out there (other than the unrealistic Butler talk).

 
My Timberwolves wish list in order:

Dunn

Bender

Murray 

Hield

I know shooting is a major team weakness but I'd be fine delaying a fix for that and taking Bender.  Him and Towns playing together could be terrifying offensively and defensively for opposing teams.

I wouldnt be 100% against it, but he's definitely the biggest risk of the group. I just dont know if the risk is worth the reward in this case.

For the Wolves, who have mired in the doldrums for decades, a risk doesnt make sense here IMO. They have a great foundation, now they just need to add smart pieces. Of the four, Id rank them this way:

Dunn

Murray

Hield

Bender

love Cat Barber. think he's a 2nd team catalyst for sure. 

if i've learned anything about scouts it's that they tend to be cynical bastards. their job is to look for the negatives, essentially. anyone can see the obvious but they have to nitpick the #### out of players lest they are seen as being sycophants.

Potentially, but who do they really take if they don't make a trade?  I think it's very likely still Dunn.  Dont think I could stomach Brown there.  Bender either.  I could see Ainge opting for Hield, but I think they'd go Dunn over him.

 
Supposedly it's a standing offer of Okafor to the Celts for the #3 pick, but Celts are holding out for more.  Ainge is working this rebuild very well.

I don't blame him for holding ouit for more. Nor do I blame him for trying to convince teams (Sixers) that he will take Dunn if he doesn't trade the pick. But the Sixers have the leverage here. They can trade Okafor (or Noel) to teams after Boston and still get Dunn. If he's gone, they can get Hield or Murray.  Boston needs a big. They are set at guard.

Not that it means anything, but I just saw a pic on twitter supposedly of ESPN rehearsals for draft night, and they had Hield on the screen going #3 to Boston.
