2016 Open Championship: Swede escapes (1 Viewer)

From SB Nation:

There has never been a major championship broadcast from the very first tee shot until the finish on Sunday afternoon, until this year. Golf Channel and NBC are making their Open Championship debut this week at Royal Troon, and it's the first time ever at a major for Golf Channel. Because it's, well, the golf channel, this is pretty much their entire week, so they opted to go live right from the very start.
I always wonder why the golf channel doesn't televise the portions of the majors and/or big tournaments that aren't covered by the big networks.  Anyone golf fan would watch the heck out of it.

The tournament is going on and it's just a bunch of golf nerds talking to each other.  I want to watch these guys hit shots.  I don't really care what Brandel Chamblee thinks.

You really don't understand how rights work?

Networks pay for the exclusive rights to air sporting events. If CBS and ESPN have the rights to something, the Golf Channel cannot air it.
I know.  It'd be nice if the golf channel could buy the coverage the big network isn't airing.  That's all I was getting at.

Phil - lose the mini-binder clip on the hat.

This looks like a very small and specialized business opportunity.
Isn't that their player credential?

Usually the early non-televised groups are inconsequential by design.
Not on Thursday or Friday. Good players tee off all different times and the leaders on Friday may go off early.

I'm talking early in the wave. The cable networks for Majors (Masters excepted) are typically going live in time to catch some of the marquee guys from the morning wave. The tee times are made with input from TV. Plus, now with the websites covering featured groups and multiple holes, there's more than enough golf to watch.

I wasn't. But now that you mention it, what has Rory done lately?
Tiger Woods isn't walking through that door anytime soon and if he does it will be as an old, broken down man.  Day probably had the longest Tiger-like streak of any of the top players and he has now started to cool off.

Everyone was spoiled by Tiger's consistency and by his sheer volume of wins.  People were writing that Rory was part of the Big 4 but in danger of being Ringo.  Apparently they forget that he has as many major titles as the other three combined along with more PGA tour wins than any of them (not to mention double digit Euro titles).

None of these guys are Tiger but they are certainly not frauds.

I think I heard one of the announcers mentioning when they showed an odd guy towards the end of the broadcast referring to him as '#155' and them saying that they had shown every player in The Open. Two days and 15 hours or so of air time, I would hope they could do that!!

I miss Tiger and await his triumphant return.   :)

But in the meantime, I am enjoying the new big 4 (Day, Spieth, McIlroy & DJ) - along with a bunch of other competitive guys each week.

I dont like the new announcer guy on the 1st Tee.

Old dude retired...oved when he would say names like Louis Oosthuizen

Stenson takes the lead...then promptly has a brain cramp to drop back to a tie with Phil, and follows it up with another one to drive into a fairway bunker on #7
