I can't believe the Heels got Villanova'ed again. One of the weirdest things I've seen in my years as a Heels fan.
Reminded me of the Austin Rivers shot.....ahhhhhh good times

5 seed is a great outcome, all things considered, especially with GT/BC followed by Clemson. Seems like a decent shot at the semis vs. UVA.
Yep. A little bummed not to seize the opportunity for a double bye, but considering the preseason 12th prediction and the roster we *thought* we had, a tie for 3rd in the conference and a 5th seed in the tourney is great. Great chance to make the semi's, then who knows what can happen.

The main thing I'm bummed about is the 2:30 PM starts on Wednesday/Thursday.

ACC TOURNAMENT TUESDAY!!! CATCH THE EXCITEMENT!!!!
So 6 posts in this thread in a four day period during the tourney of the most the most storied basketball conference?  About a a page a month during the regular season.

Is this a reflection of interest in college hoops, specifically the ACC waning or is it a reflection of this message board?  I'm seeing a similar trend on sports radio in the Charlotte area.  Less basketball coverage and calls and more focus on pro sports.  Of course that could be driven by the drama associated with the two local pro teams.  It's not as dramatic as the drop off of NASCAR, but definitely noticed.

Any know how attendance has been at the tourney this year?  What about TV ratings?

Is it time for K to be shown the door?  I've never seen a coach to do less with more talent.  There are more posts in this thread about him securing every top McDonald's 10 star All World recruit than there are about big wins.  He's become the Marvin Lewis of the ACC.  If he was coaching the Globetrotters, kids would go home crying crying on a regular basis

Like with everything else, interest and eyeballs are down but the main reason there’s not much in this thread is folks post in the main thread - mainly to hopefully avoid Ripleys.

Well somehow Duke is one of two teams in both kenpoms top 10 offensive and defensive efficiency category.

The defense certainly doesn’t seem to pass the eye test but guess the zone makes people do stupid things. UNC was ready for it and just played it so hopefully teams in tourney aren’t as prepared.

Team could win 6 or 0.

I fall into both. I don’t post here a ton anymore bc life got in the way but I also don’t watch that much college basketball. Some of it is I’m busy but some of it is the one and dones and all that. Now obviously that’s more impactful as a Duke fan but guys are there for 5 months. Also despite their skill, the quality of game seems to go down. Don’t get me wrong, guy like Bagley is fun to watch but still makes mistakes that an upperclassman would not.

Incredible season for UVA. Their style obviously makes for some ugly games but it seems pretty clear that Bennett is the best x's and o's guy in the country.

I do think they get away with a LOT of grabbing, undercutting and other physical stuff that helps them do what they do. You can tell their guys are SHOCKED whenever they get a foul called on them.  Wonder what happens if they get a tight whistle in the tournament against a team that's capable of taking advantage.

If you're only looking at it from a perspective of "players who went on to do well in the NBA", Dean Smith didn't really have all that many.

Charlie Scott & Robert McAdoo had good pro careers but they played during UCLA's Reign Of Terror.

Mitch Kupchak had a nice NBA run.

The 1977 team is the one that he probably should take the most heat for. Walter Davis, Mike O'Koren and the great Phil Ford. They lost to Marquette in the title game. They had all of the momentum and went four-corners for reasons I will never understand. Anyway, none of those players did much as pros.

He won with Worthy, Jordan, & Perkins - all of whom made their marks in the pros.

After that, how many good pros did he produce? I'm sure there had to be some, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

The team that beat the Fab 5 didn't have any pro stars.

In any case, I don't think that's how you should judge a coach. Smith wasn't coaching NBA versions of his players.

We really should start a separate thread to discuss Dean Smith's coaching performance from 4 decades ago and leave this thread for discussing Mikey's current failures.  K is Phil Jackson without all the titles.

Bass why dont you find a new forum to go post about how much you think the all time winningest coach and his 5 titles have underachieved and how Isis is better than K? You can let us know how that goes. Meanwhile would you like to discuss Roy’s current failure losing last night??

I know you are trolling but didnt he just win one?

I believe this is the appropriate place to discuss how Duke flamed out this year despite having a roster loaded with the best recruits in the nation.  It's just a bonus that Carolina took them out.

Fire away on last night, I'm a VaTech and NCState fan.  State is going to go further in the tourney this year than the rest of the ACC.  :wolf:

I'm not biting Ahab as I believe there's only one fish you're looking to catch.   I do this has been a terrible coaching job by K and I've been really impressed by Roy's work these last 3 years.  I can't recall K ever doing something similar to what Roy has done recently where his team has outperformed their expectations.

Yeah I agree, and that's one reason to doubt them. Another is I suspect their style works better during the regular season and conference tournament when teams generally don't do nearly as much advance scouting and opponent-specific prep.

On the other hand, Kyle Guy is essentially unguardable. He deserves more hype. If he was three inches taller he'd be a lottery pick.

His ability to set his feet at weird body angles is NBA-quality.  I might go so far as to say it's the best NBA level skill exhibited by an ACC player this year (taking pure athleticism off the table).

I mean, I guess I was sort of right.

Can't say I thought it would happen against a team with a 5'5 Puerto Rican point guard though...

They just has no idea what to do when umbc made a few lucky shots and all of a sudden, they couldn't eat the first 15 seconds of the shot clock every time down the court

All 4 Duke freshman are gone. Only question is if Bolden goes (but right now most believe he will stay) Duke freshman look like that 2015 freshman class right now, putting it together on both ends and playing very well.

I guess people leave early all the time even if they're not going to be selected in the 1st round, but it still surprises me that someone that was ranked as highly as Duval coming out of high school would settle for that.  Bolden would be lucky if he was even drafted.

Looking through some mock drafts, I did see one that had Duval at 20 so maybe he will get a 1st round pick.  I don't care for him as a player but I suppose if he can develop a shot and do a better job of taking care of the ball, he can develop into a nice player.

Yeah Duval isn't coming back to probably sit behind tre jones. If he can keep playing like he played today he'll get in the first round.

But he's gone either way. Don't see Trent staying either. He won't be picked high but he also wouldn't be a lock to start

Some might argue that ACC officiating is not completely fair, whether that is due to bias or incompetence. Heck, the head of ACC officiating has stated in the past that ACC officials "study teams' and players' tendencies, so they know what to look for when it comes to fouls," which creates the possibility of bias, whether conscious or unconscious (e.g., UVA is known not to foul much, leading to fewer fouls called on UVA).

That is certainly a possible reason why UVA has been dominant in ACC play and yet generally disappointed in the NCAA tournament.

Well, you know how it works; a lot of picks are made on pure potential.  There was no earthly reason anyone should have drafted rent-a-guard Frank Jackson last year but he was what, one or two picks shy of the first round.  GMs will figure Duval might learn to shoot and defend; meanwhile, he can certainly get up and down and make laser passes.  And no chance he risks coming back and losing time to Tre Jones.  Trent should stay but he's shown more than Jackson so he'll jump too.  Zero chance Bolden even declares IMO.  He'll be the guy inside next season surrounded by Tre and the top three recruits in the country.

Meanwhile, this year's team looks outstanding.

So maybe we should talk about Roy’s choke job today? All those upperclassman Swahili majors and they can’t get out of the second round in their backyard?  :lmao:
