Taggart told his own players that FSU was his dream job.  Even if they match salaries (which Oregon would have to raise with 10ish% due to astronomical state taxes and a new tax plan where you can't deduct your state taxes - THANKS OBAMA) it is impossible to compete with a dream.  Taggart's wife is home sick, his son wants to go to IMG, somebody's mom down there is in grave health.  He's not staying here.  The weather is awful right now and I'm sure people are wearing shorts in Talledega or Truckadassee or whatever right now.  

It.....it was sort of a run.  We'll always have the Las Vegas Bowl Bid, Willie.   Have a nice career, if you want to. 

 
Missed everything yesterday, but what did the committee have to say about the farce of placing Fresno State into the Top 25 only to lost to BSU?  Anything?

Asinine? This decision was purely on losses. Auburn was in the championship game, they won HTH, and they had a harder SOS. Auburn had more top 10 wins - 2 vs 0 - and more top 25 wins - 3 vs 2 - than Alabama. The only thing Bama was better at was fewer losses, unless you count margin of victory over Mercer. What else do you think went into the decision in choosing Bama over Auburn?

I thought you were implying that they basically just chose the 4 teams with the fewest losses because all they cared about was losses.  That part is patently untrue as they would have not only taken a 2-loss Auburn, they would have probably had them as the #1 overall seed ahead of a slew of 1-loss teams.

If you're talking about only Bama compared to Auburn, then sure I can buy that it came down to losses in this scenario.  2 extra losses is a lot.  If Auburn had finished with 2 losses they would have still taken Auburn over Alabama so it's not a blanket "more losses = you're out".  But yes, it came down to a major difference in losses.  Is that terrible?  I mean how far do you take it.  What if a team is 6-6 with 4 wins over top 10 opponents including a head to head over one of the playoff teams?

I generally agree that losses are a variable that is valued too highly by the committee.  But I also think people in this thread are being unbalanced the other way, to the point where everyone is basically just shrugging off losses as if they were bye weeks where no game took place.

Auburn is an interesting case because with their schedule they probably could have been not only in, but a #1 seed, even with 2 losses.  But 3?  Are we really pushing things that far?  I mean it's pretty clear Auburn isn't the best team in the country.  Yeah it sucks that they had to play five top 15 opponents but they went 2-3 in those games.  That doesn't mean they aren't good, but 2-3 against top 15 opponents isn't exactly national championship material.  When all was said and done Clemson was 4-0 against top 15 opponents last year.  Alabama was 5-1 the year before that.  Winning 40% of your tough games isn't as impressive as people are implying.

I don't like the Bama selection this year but no matter who they picked the 4th team this year was going to be one with a lot of flaws and a very compelling case as to why they shouldn't be in there.  At least we're arguing about leaving out one team from a selection of teams that all probably don't deserve to have a chance to play for the title this year, instead of arguing who gets left out from a BCS game between three teams that all probably do deserve a shot.

The irony in all of this is that if they had won game #5, they would've been that #1 seed with a 3-2 record against top 15 teams.

Please tell me this thread has already discussed Herm's intro press conference at ASU today where he was horrified to field a question from a reporter from the Daily Devils.  Appears Herm the Catholic is no fan of anything to do with Satan.

Actually the more I think about it, I am surprised that the CFP didn't have USC, Stanford, Washington and Washington State, since it is the best conference.

I just can’t believe they buyout Graham for $12,000,000 (not mitigated by any future coaching money) and Herm Edwards is the choice??? Should have just kept Graham. 

What a bizarre hire.

They don't care.  Nobody goes to their games.  Would you after 20 years of futility?  I mean...they just fired a guy who went to a bowl game 5 out of 6 years, was 15 games over. 500 and hired a guy who was mortified to learn his employer's mascot had the word "Devil" in it.  How can you root for that?

Better question I guess is how can you not?

I didn't think Graham was a great coach, but imo he was about as good as ASU should expect to have.  Graham >>>> Herm flippin Edwards.  WTF  That would probably the best thing to ever happen to Graham.

Washington State quarterback Luke Falk has won the 2017 Burlsworth Trophy over two-time recipient Baker Mayfield, the Burlsworth Foundation announced Monday.

The Burlsworth Trophy annually honors the most outstanding college football player in America who began his career as a walk-on.

Mayfield has now missed out on two awards that were thought to be in the bag for the fifth-year senior. Last week, Mason Rudolph won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. Mayfield is still a finalist for several more awards and is the frontrunner to win the Heisman Trophy.

Out of conference. I have no problem with conference rivals agreeing to play every year at a neutral site. In fact, I like it. George and Florida meet every year in Jacksonville. Cool. I would have no issue if the Iron Bowl were played at a neutral site every year.

It's just such a random thing to fixate on.  No neutral site games but only out of conference.  What the weird? 

Doubly weird that a team is getting all this credit in your mind for playing on the road OOC when a big part of the reason they're doing it is probably because they don't play in any tough road environments otherwise, because they skip the only really tough road environment in their conference.

In your mind playing a neutral site game against a 6-6 FSU game alongside an incredibly tough road game at a top 5 Auburn team in one of the toughest environments in the country is something to complain about, but skipping Jordan Hare to play Auburn at a much easier neutral site while going on the road to FSU (who was only 3-3 at home this year) would be noble.

You're really trying hard to split hairs here.

If two schools want to agree to play their games at a neutral site, then certainly they have that right, regardless of whether they're schools in the same conference or not.  

That's far different than just months after the new playoff committee system was agreed to, Alabama cancels on an already schedule home and home series with Michigan State... because Alabama calculated the risks and decided that with the new system playing in OOC team's home venues is too risky. Playing a Florida State, a USC, and a Wisconsin every year gives the committee a game they want to see on the schedule, but without the additional risks other teams take by actually going into hostile environments to get the games the committee wants to see on their schedules.

To be honest, all teams should do what Alabama is doing, if getting in to the playoff is what matters most. But most schools are focused on giving their fans home games, especially home games against big schools. 

And that's what I hate most about this selection committee system and the poll system that preceded it. It encourages schools to avoid risk in their OOC scheduling. If you're a school, do you want to give your fans big home games.... or do you want to get in to the playoff? It's a spectrum. If you favor one, then you hurt the other. 

A true playoff system solves this spectrum problem. Simply give the big 5 conference winners an automatic trip to the playoff, and losing games in their OOC schedules won't hurt them at all. Add in 1 to 3 at large teams to the playoff and winning big games in their OOC schedules would help them a ton in getting in to the playoff if they don't win their conference. That makes big OOC games have a ton a benefit for a win, yet zero cost if it's a loss (because win the conference and you're still in). If we want to see better OOC scheduling, this is what needs to be done.
