2017 College Football Thread: Hawaiian QB devastated to find out Jesus was "kinda rooting for Georgia" (1 Viewer)

Anyone play college fantasy?  I've got a couple of titles to my name, but this year is tough with lots of big names heading to the NFL. Here's my roster:

https://ibb.co/gtiy45

not pictured is my K (Michael Brown of USC) and my defense is UGA.

week 1 is always tough for wsis type situations. I'm thinking of plugging in Tavien Feaster over Josh Adams.

Edit: The team pool is the preseason top 25 + every team gets to add one team on top of that + the commish adds 3 more = 40 teams in the player pool. All are FBS.

I'm sort of excited for today, but it's an odd mish mash of games. I'll check in here and there, but I've got another week before I get truly geeked up.

You just have to be a fan to understand the true, deep-seated hatred of the border war between UMass and Hawaii.

That was the best game of the day except for the final result.
It was the best game of the day until the veteran coach threw up all over himself ... again ... in the final five minutes.

So much for the dream of being one of the first teams in the Bad Boys Motors Gasparilla Bowl. :sadbanana:

At this point, I'm not sure if the Gators are going to have enough players to field a team Saturday.

Jim McElwain announced Wednesday that leading returning running back Jordan Scarlett and wide receiver Rick Wells have been suspended from all team activities, bringing the number of suspended Gators for the season opener against Michigan to ten.

According to the Associated Press' Mark Long, both players were also involved in the same alleged "debit card scam" that led to the suspensions of Antonio Callaway and several others.

Saying Mark Thompson might be suspended too.  (#2/3 RB after Scarlett)

I'm not sure how I feel about Michigan trotting out on the field in all maize uniforms.  This is my old man "get off my lawn" moment. :bag:

Just hope it doesn't end up looking like they "pulled an Oregon".

Keep 'em coming.  At this point this all works out to a decent excuse for a game we were probably going to lose anyway.

I asked this on Twitter, but is Rutgers in the B1G only because of the Tony Soprano effect?  I mean, WTF?  Why is Rutgers in the B1G, and don;'t tell me anything about NYC eyeballs, that's a fallacy.

I honestly keep forgetting Rutgers is in the B1G...   It's like "Oh Johnny, I apologize, I forgot you were there...you may go now"

They are literally there because the Big 10 is wanted to tap into the NYC market. No other reason.

Same with Maryland.

I haven't paid close attention this passed year, so the number is a bit dated, but the last analysis was that getting into the market (along with Maryland) accounted for a 33% increase in revenue.  It also provides leverage in the network negotiations that are coming up.  Not sure if you consider that the same thing as "eyeballs", but that money is the primary reason they went there.  Seems to be working for them if the numbers from last year are any indication.

Rutgers has certainly opened a pipeline for Ohio State to pull NYC kids.  Curtis Samuel, now this 2018 kid Matthew Jones who is a monster.

A bit of an expanded answer on the increase in revenue...

BTN charges carriers like $0.45/month for the channel across the country. But written into the contract is that for the DMAs which contain a B1G school, that number goes up to something like $1.10/month.

So adding Rutgers and Maryland instantly spiked BTN revenues for the entire NYC and DC markets. Enormous.

Listen, I'll never claim that Rutgers will be a powerhouse in the B1G especially considering the division we're in. But we won 7 games in our first year, with 3 conference wins, when the team still had Schiano's guys in it. Kyle Flood completely annihilated this program. He was unqualified to take over from Schiano and we had failures in leadership that kept him in the position two years too long. We have something ridiculous like 6 scholarship kids still in the program from his 2014 class. His 2015 class has half been run out already. The guy landed one single top 10 kid from New Jersey in four years of recruiting classes. That's unbelievably putrid.

Ash is slowly building it back up. You can see what he had to work with considering how many grad transfers are going to be starting for us tomorrow night and how many freshmen will be on the two deep. Continue to keep more of the top talent in state, finally start getting legitimate TV revenue checks coming in (we get like $9MM annually as we buy our way in, while everyone else is getting $30MM+), and there is no reason Rutgers can't be a second tier B1G school (or third tier if you want to put OSU in its own).

That's not a Rutgers effect. NYC football has just gotten significantly better in recent years. 4*, even high 3* star kids were pretty rare, even back to the early part of this decade.

Think they'd need to actually make it to a meaningful bowl game to pull off an Oregon.  ;)

I'll stop trying to make bad jokes now.

Anybody else subscribe to The Athletic, Stewart Mandel's landing spot?  I caved and paid the $7.99 for it this month and I'm glad I did.  I absolutely ####### abhor the fact that big sports websites have moved to video/audio almost exclusively.  I like to read.  If you like to read your news, The Athletic is a gold mine for the college football fan.

I say that in that Rutgers getting into the B1G has given pipelines to schools to get better access to those recruits.  Ohio State has taken advantage in grabbing NYC and New Jersey kids where before the exposure was not as great.  It is certainly not a Rutgers thing. :)

I like the idea, the price point just seems a bit out of whack to me.  $8 is more than I pay for Netflix.  I mean I know it's just $8, but that just seems like a premium price for a new service.

Don't you have your Neutron Man costume on for tonight's game??

I balked at the full year discounted price because I really only want to read this during college football season.  I figure 3-4 months for a total of $32 to read my favorite college football writer is worth the cost.  I'll spend $32 on dumber stuff today alone.

Educate me a little bit if you don't mind. I thought The Athletic just covered specific media markets. Are they covering CFB nationally? What about other sports? The site is blocked at my work so I can't check it right now but I am curious.

I just joined this week and really only so I can read Stewart Mandel's "Forward Pass" and "Mail Bag", which I consider staple weekly reading.  You are right, there's coverage for cities like Chicago, Detroit, Montreal and a few more.  But the NCAA FB page is where it's at for me.  It has the look of a major city's sports page with very concise headlines and a few sentences of the story (which you can click and it takes you right to it with no slow-loading vids or ads), a few pictures of their top feature stories and absolutely NO videos (which I loathe), no pop-ups, no distractions.  Couple of today's articles:  "What we're watching in college football Thursday night".... "17 impactful freshmen in college football", etc.  They have staff picks for week 1 headed by Mandel but also has picks by Chantel Jennings (I think she's great), Matt Fortuna and other budding college football writers.

Essentially, this is a site for people who much prefer to read their news about college football.  There's an app too, but I haven't downloaded it yet.  I'm digging this quite a bit.

Nice. They probably have a free trial, I will sign-up tonight. I can barely use ESPN.com anymore because of all of the extra crap on the page.
