2017 College Football Thread: Hawaiian QB devastated to find out Jesus was "kinda rooting for Georgia" (1 Viewer)

I vaguely remember them having a good year or two at some point in the last 40 years.
We’ve had a National Championship since UGA - that’s about the extent of our bragging rights.  We have been to a lot of bowl games the last 20-25 years, just mostly ####ty ones.

This is really odd, even for you. They're ranked 6th now.

If you are asking if I know that teams can be overrated, yes I know that. Michigan is notorious for being overrated.

That said, I think Wisconsin is better than any team Alabama beat.
so, no?  Doesn't matter....I tried to delete it before we went down the rabbit hole....guess I was too slow

This should be five conference champions:  Clemson, Oklahoma, Georgia, Ohio State, and USC.   Then three at-large teams:  Alabama, Wisconsin, and Auburn according to the rankings.  Put UCF in for Wisconsin/Auburn if you want this isn't a G5 post.

1. Clemson vs 8. Southern Calif.

4. Alabama vs 5 Ohio State

3  Georgia vs 6 Wisconsin

2 Oklahoma vs 7 Auburn

Who doesn't want to see these games?  Everyone (in P5 conferences) has a chance to play their way in.  The whining would just be about seeding but Penn State, Miami, Washington, TCU, and Notre Dame have zero argument to get in over these teams.
We should just have conference champions. Take all Div 1 champs and let the playoffs begin. If you need to get rid of some non-conf games, so be it. If you need to keep the committee they can seed the playoffs. Independents can find a league or the best independent gets a slot

Roquan Smith won the Butkus Award today as the nations top LB. Well deserved. Will be a great matchup vs Mayfield in Pasadena.

As far as I know OU and UGA have never played each other

What?

Auburn and Georgia played Clemson and ND out of conference.  Bama scheduled FSU who obviously flopped but was supposed to be a playoff quality team.
Bama never schedules an OOC game away that isn't a neutral site. Schedule some home and homes and then they can be in the discussion.

Eight is too many. Six is the sweet spot.
I still don't get why people promote 8 games. 16 is the right number. As discussed before, like basketball, it's not about finding the best team. You can't find the best team with a limited schedule. In fact, no sport's playoff system is about finding the best team. It's about finding the winner of the tournament. Ey.liminate the Mercers. Play the first round this weekend and the next round next weekend. Take the next few weeks off and play the semis around new years and the finals a week later. Pretty effing easy.

The money would be huge.

In the Saban era Bama has played exactly 2 true road games OOC. Duke in 2010 & Penn. St. in 2011.
As a comparison, OU has gone to Ohio State, Tennesse, Tulsa, Notre Dame, UTEP, Florida State, Cincinnati, Miami, and Washington in that time.

It’s cyclical as Saban has helped build the big Labor Day and it’s a massive success. Penn State was the last OOC home and home a few years ago, but it’s been tough to work out home and homes and neutral site games in ATL and Dallas help recruiting.

Fans would love to get back to the 2000’s playing at UCLA and Oklahoma though...the neutral site games are getting less interesting...it’ll revert back soon I’d guess.

Who cares about "true away" games?  Sure playing in the opponent's house can be more challenging but I've generally liked neutral site OOC games. If you can play a team expected to be good in Orlando, Atlanta, Arlington TX, or others, why not?

More teams should do them.

Auburn would've been way better off not even playing it. Womp womp
yeah why bother playing the games, just let the committee pick who they want....Bama basically lost a playoff game to Auburn....matters not. Clemson will smash them anyway

Lots of people.
Exactly!

Saban wouldn't play SEC road games if he didn't have to.

This is also why the SEC won't go to nine conference games. It would mean every other year he would have to go to 5 SEC teams home turf. The way it is now, he only has to do it four times a year.

Neutral site games in Arlington blow. The only neutral site that is fun is texas ou and that is because of the fair and all that.

There was talk of moving it to Jerry's World a few years ago but they signed a contract with the Cotton Bowl through 2025. If they can't keep it there, I'd rather it be home and home.

Ok. So is the complaining just jealousy? That's fine, understandable even.
:loco:  As several of us have stated, we like true road games. One of the best games I've been to was OU @ ND a few years ago. Baker never would have planted the flag if OU and OSU decided to play at a neutral site. OU is resurrecting its rivalry with Nebraska with a home and home series in a few years. OU has home and homes with UCLA, Tennessee & Michigan scheduled. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Exactly. I've been to Michigan, Penn State, Michigan State, Iowa, Indiana, and Purdue to see Ohio State play. Also been to seven neutral site games. All the away games were better experiences than all the neutral site games. The energy level of a home team's crowd doesn't compare to a neutral site crowd. It's easy to see why Saban avoids those environments. It's harder to win there.

Pretty sure Saban cancelled a home and home he had already scheduled with Michigan State.

Yep. From: https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/alabama-cancels-series-with-michigan-state/

"Alabama requested to cancel the series due to uncertainty with the SEC schedule," Hollis told the paper via text. "While disappointed, in the spirit of collegiality, we agreed to the request."

The series had been scheduled for Tuscaloosa in 2016 and East Lansing in 2017.

The uncertainty with Alabama's SEC schedule is likely related to wondering whether the SEC will have moved to a nine-game conference schedule by then, leaving only three non-conference dates available. The truth is, when it comes to Alabama, the Tide don't really need to worry about strength of schedule in the playoff era when it comes to the selection committee. It's Alabama.
:lmao:

You're right...which was because neutral site games are better for $ and recruiting, especially with the replacements of FSU and USC. I think it'll make sense to go back to H-and-H soon.
