2018-19 NBA Thread: Magic Johnson leaves Lakers in order to pursue other jobs to be completely terrible at (4 Viewers)

I feel bad for Indy most.  What are the chances you draft a franchise player at 12 and he leaves you to play second fiddle in a worse market.

Big dawg in Indy too much for him.

Not winning anything in either.

That is brutal.

Dude is scared.

I think it is a worse signing for the Suns than a non-signing for all these other teams being mentioned. This is like the Hill, Carter, and Randolph signings for the Kings last year. All it really does is make them a little better (didn't end up working out that way for the Kings last year) while it takes away the importunity to get a team like the Thunders or Nuggets to give you a first round pick to take a contract.
Probably trade him at deadline for a pick

I love what the Suns have cooking. Maybe it seems odd that they want to win now, but I kind of hate that we've gotten to a point where teams are criticized for trying to be competitive at all.

Keeping that Miami pick would've been nice, but they haven't really done anything too reckless and Ariza on a 1-year deal is awesome (and maybe it's just a trade piece anyway). Future assets are always important, but they have their young core already. The most important thing right now is developing Booker/Ayton/Jackson/Bridges into the best possible players they can be. They'll either be great one day and so will the Suns, or they won't and they won't.

Booker and Ayton with a bunch of versatile wings trying to win games every night and maybe getting some Playoff reps soon, along with long-term flexibility, is a pretty awesome situation.

Starting around '22, it's going to be fun watching the Suns own the West, though I'm worried they won't be able to peak before the Doncic/Giannis/Anthony Davis Mavs get together.

$35 mill/year goes a long way in Oklahoma.

It's odd, but I get it. He likes it there, nothing wrong with that. It's lot of money, he likes his role, he can do his thing, let Westbrook deal with the criticism, and be somewhat relevant.

You could say that he could have a similar situation in LA with LeBron, but really it's very different. There's no better person to take arrows than Westbrook. Westbrook's game is already picked apart anyway, and people are programmed to blame him. LeBron is such an otherwordly talent that we've grown accustomed to blaming his teammates. Rightfully so in the past, but I'd suspect that narrative is so ingrained in people that they'll lean that way even if a time ever comes that it's not so true anymore. And I could see it not being a fun situation playing with LeBron if the time ever comes that LeBron starts playing like his actual age.

McDonough is nothing more than fighting for his job at this point.

The mistakes have overwhelmed the positive. Dealt IT2 at the beginning of a very inexpensive long term deal for nothing, lotto pick + large long term deal -- another 2 seasons -- for absolutely zero from Brandin Knight, 2 young low IQ high lotto pick busts in Chriss and Bender.....dealing the far superior player in Bogdanovic in the process. Giving unprotected first of a Miami team with a mediocre at best with zero financial flexibility for the next couple years to move up 6 spots in the late lottery when they had other protected assets to give.

So much unproductive well past their prime players on their bench doing nothing. Chandler/Dudley/Brandin Knight and soon to be Ariza (neighborhood of combined $50/mil yr). The ONLY way this Ariza deal makes any sense whatsoever is if they have a deal in the works for a PG because there's literally nothing on the roster at the position. (Already pushed back Tyler Ulis's guarantee date).

He's a goner if at least one of Bridges or Josh Jackson isn't a very good player in 2018. The rope is gone with McDonough.

Where do we want to see LeBron end up now?

Lakers would be a waste....why go in the shadow of the greats that won championships to lose in the 2nd round every year and have that idiot Lavar Ball to listen to.

Philly or Houston would be sweet.

Best thing about PG staying is it tosses in the dumpster the idea that a player is predetermined to go somewhere a year later. Finally gives small market teams a little bone imo.

I mean it's just human nature. You just got a done a year of working with people. Got used to the area, the facilities. Kids got settled in schools. Do you want to up lift all that if the people you work with are not terrible to deal with?

I think wherever Kawhi goes will have a similar affect.  He seems low key. If he has a good year and the situation is friendly, he isn't going to want to move.

If Bron seriously wants to win titles at this point, and wants to have a real chance against GS, I think the only options he has left are Houston and Boston.

Plus, it has to make the Lakers think about what they are doing.  Not wanting to give up too much for Leonard and assuming James might be a free agent again next summer, they are probably thinking, "Instead of trading the farm for Leonard, we will let our young talent get better, and then next summer Leonard will come here when he is a free agent and LeBron will follow."  However, everyone thought Paul George was coming to LA, like it was a foregone conclusion, and look how that turned out.

So funny to see all the talking heads stating that George would never stay in OKC.   Now the same talking heads stating that it is a terrible deal for George.  No one wants to play in LA but for some reason, ESPN and other talking heads keep pushing that is where every high profile free agent is going every year.

Why did George sign 3 year +1 year option?  If he signs for 2 years he's at 10 years and can go back into FA and get a fat raise?  He held all the cards and this just seems like an odd finish.  Especially when you consider the 5 year max offer he could have just signed with the Pacers had he been willing to forgo on LA.
Does seem really odd.  Wonder if the league will look at his deal and have a lot of questions.  How does his agent allow him to sign 3 plus 1?

So what is the Thunder's tax bill? Can't believe they re-signed George and Grant.
oh my god

With Paul George and Jerami Grant on board, Oklahoma City now has a payroll of $156M with 11 players under contract. Because of the repeater tax penalty, the Thunder currently have a tax bill of $130M. The tax bill would be the largest in NBA history.
This is a lot of money to spend and lose in the WC Semis

He did say that Lebron won't be in the meeting though....

I wonder if he'll be the Laker meeting?

Doesn’t make any difference at all.

Lebron had to have told PG he wasn’t going to the Lakers right? Only way that move makes sense.

As a Cavs fan, my hope level has risen from 1 of 10 to 2.5 over the last 12 hours.

If he can't put together a super team somewhere else, he might as well stay home and take the extra $55 million

Lebron has to sign with Houston or Philly at this point right?   I dunno.   Maybe OKC can make room and push their tax over 250 million.  Would be worth it IMO

Houston is currently $16 million over the cap. They couldn’t sign him now. As things stand now, they would have to do a sign and trade with Cleveland or make other trades to be able to sign him under the cap.

Lebron in Philly with Simmons, Embiid and a couple shooters would destroy Boston
I still see Phil as too young, not enough depth. If Bron wants to take a longer approach and be the 2nd/3rd options behind Ben/Joel and sign long term then that's fine. But I think his ego is too big for that.

I'm pretty sure LeBron with a bunch of slobs a Cleveland just beat Boston in a seven-game series. Now add embiid and Simmons to that along with whatever else they have they're going to the finals regardless of what Boston does.

Yeah okay if you guys expect me to believe Bron gonna be first option at 35 36 years old over those two. Gtfo. Like I said, my timeline is 2 3 years out. They'd still get blasted by GS in Finals before Ben Joel can develop some more.

Lebron at 35 is almost certainly one of the 5 best players in the league. Ben Simmons literally cannot shoot, how will he ever be an option over him?
