2018 College Football Thread: Local man buys some teenage champions a 4 for 4 (2 Viewers)

Getting ‘5 first round picks every year’ is based on results (bad)...getting great recruits is based on both on field performance and recruiting skill. A skill Belichick doesn’t have and doesn’t want to have.

Failed in Miami?  It was a no win scenario there.

Miami has had like two winning seasons since he left.  He absolutely made the right choice.
Bama was a mess as well.

How could Saban turn Bama around but fail in Miami? Best players win...Miami was not allowed the cream of the crop.

I credit Saban for building the recruiting machine to give Bama the best players and doing the job with them.

Saban wanted Brees in Miami, no doubt in my mind he wins a Super Bowl or two with him. Saban > Belichick

It’s significantly harder to win in the nfl than college. Come on you know that.

Saban is the best college coach ever but I wouldn’t compare what he’s done to Belichick. It’s not even really close imo.
Ask Belichick how he’d like to sit in a grandmothers living room.  I’m kind of shocked you think this (incorrectly).

So you think generally Saban is better at his job than BB? There’s no way. The guy has 5 super bowl rings in a cap era and a perfect regular season.

I wouldn’t say he failed in Miami either

So true.  I think people give too much to history at Alabama when discussing Saban.  To me it's almost a slight to him.  This isn't the Bryant era and these kids he gets from Louisiana, Maryland, etc. have no idea who Bear Bryant or even Gene Stallings are.  Saban would be this dominant at several SEC schools and probably at some other schools like an Ohio State for example.  Now being in the South no doubt puts him closer to a fertile recruiting footprint.  But he was building this kind of machine at LSU when he left.  Does anyone not believe if Nick Saban were at Florida for example that he couldn't have done just as well?  That might even be more dominant given that home state recruiting base.  To me, it makes what he's done even more impressive.  Kirby Smart has GA high schools to recruit from who year in and year out produce more top 300 players than Alabama.

I'm only liking posts for the most part because I'm lax on the college game, but Belichick not only has five rings as a head coach in the cap era, but also two as a DC for the Giants.

That guy is a legend. Saban couldn't do anything in Miami. Is this argument even serious?

I think Belichick is a better coach because the salary cap, the hours required as an NFL coach under stress, and because he makes guys like Julian Edelman stars.

College requires a salesman and a person that has to play the political game, Saban is better at that. Dabo Sweeney is a good coach, great salesman, he’d be 5-11 in the NFL.

I’m sure they consider themselves on equal ground. Mutual respect for the best ever in completely different worlds.

Lighten up and enjoy the win @gump  Every other fanbase other than Clemson would love to be there. And for exactly the reasons we're talking about and with the huge personnel advantages the top teams have, you should be great for as long as Saban wants to be there.

I admit I'm biased to Saban, but I look at Saban and Belichick as being akin to the best accountant and best financial guys I know.  They are similar professions, they involve numbers and are business people, but the jobs aren't exactly the same and honestly if you were to switch jobs, neither of them would be at successful at the others' job as they are at their own.

Happy New Years Joe...look forward to seeing you next New Years in this thread.

I didn’t realize there were so many Belichick knob slobbers out there, you guys are creeping me out.

Saban was 6-10 his last year in Miami and bolted back to college.

Saban and Dabo are great at what they do but  both be 6-10 at best coaching the Lions.

They did right by the fan base tonight for sure. Group text with all my college buddies is nothing but dollar signs right now
All my gambling friends asked me what would happen. Game played out different than I expected, but I said 41-34 Bama. I got several thanks via text after the game.

Meh, Saban is awesome. I can’t even quantify what he does with that program. Why does he have to be better than Belichick in the history books? All you have to do is point to the banners.

Backdoor cover definitely the play. Riley gave up a tiny bit of win equity to keep the score in hand, with the FGs and not overly pressing pace.

There are 32 teams in the NFL and a quarter of them don’t understand basic math. He’s competing against clowns like Jerry Jones and the ####### Jets. Belichick lucked into Tom Brady and ran with it - good for him.

I think Saban would have eventually won in Miami, or wherever. But I will say it again, I’d rather be the king in Tuscolusa, Tallahassee, Ann Arbor, or Eugene than be the toast of the town in Kansas City. College is so much better imo.

Great game Sooners...lot of similarities in our programs, campuses, history and fanbases. And colors according to my Uncle Mason.

Wish we could have that first quarter back.

It’s good to play the best, I wanted to play Bama. You can’t get to the top of the hill until you test the king, OU did fine tonight.

I hope they go to 8 teams and we can see a little more competition. I think the semifinal games will be s lot better, as teams won’t be so flat out of the gate. Only Bama among the 4 teams today was sharp right away.

The salary cap really isn’t that hard. Watch McVay get off Goff soon while the Cowboys give Dak a massive contract. Belichick is great at his job and I pride myself on being able to spell his name correctly every time but this is the cfb thread, we should all be blindly defending Saban over that monster

Seriously. What other sport takes a month off before the most important games? So dumb.

edit: it’s a huge factor in terms of why these games suck every year and nobody talks about it. Make it 16 teams, give the top teams an “easy” matchup on campus to get the juices flowing and then let’s get after it

You have a problem with Kansas City friend? I will @ Bruce Dickinson if I need to, don’t make me do it

What a fugly game.  Carolina's players seem to have had no interest in being there.
I had decent seats ... just to be able to see the lack of enthusiasm on the sideline.

Belicheck it seems was forced to stay with Gronk and Brady.  I think those moves will hurt them soon enough.

I totally disagree.  Cap is hardest in sports.

Tip of the hat to the Sooners, they battled all night.  That was one of the sloppiest games in recent memory from a discipline standpoint by Alabama.  Still happy, Tua looked good with his ankle.

Unless they ever fully join a conference.   This will happen.  This was an example of the ACA championship game.

I gotta come clean.  I'm an Auburn grad and fan.  But I also pull for Alabama because their success is my business success. :)   Nick Saban has been very very good to me.  I'd like to take 100% credit for business sense to be where I was at the time but honestly I got lucky having him show up in my market.
Mark Davis?

Exactly. The "let's look for anyone to offend me" angle instead of enjoying the success is fascinating to me.

Don't disagree. And so much easier to keep it going with the huge advantage in talent the top guys enjoy each year.

I have no idea if Saban would eventually have won in the NFL. Clearly, he showed he wasn't able to when he had the chance. Maybe he would have eventually been successful coaching players where the talent was evenly distributed. But we likely won't ever know.

It's the awesome line from Bum Phillips about (ironically) Bear Bryant:

Bryant can take his'n and beat your'n, and then he can turn around and take your'n and beat his'n.

People and especially coaches know that's the ultimate compliment.

Can you win when you don't have advantage in talent? It's how coaches are judged.

With all that said, I don't disagree with the draw of being King in a college town. I totally understand why he'd rather stay in the comfort of Tuscaloosa.
