2018 College Football Thread: Local man buys some teenage champions a 4 for 4 (2 Viewers)

I saw nothing from Alabama last night that would lead me to believe Alabama would win a 7 game series vs Clemson. In fact, I think they would get swept.
Are you saying if Alabama - Clemson could play 4 times, Clemson wins all 4?

also for all the hell Kirby Smart got for that Justin Fields in the fake punt, Saban running a fake field goal with the kicker as the LEAD BLOCKER while Clemson has 8 guys in their base D was probably even dumber. Amazingly stupid.
Unbelievable.

I don't know.  Clemson is the best team I saw this year play college football.  And after last night, I don't think it is really close.  They were the best team in 2018 and proved it over and again.  8 teams in the playoffs wouldn't change that calculus, IMO.
I agree with this. I'm not sure an expanded playoff would make a lot of difference in getting the best team as champion. I just think it would be way more fun and entertaining. I'd love to see what a Texas or Ohio State team could have done for instance. I think it would still likely have been Alabama and Clemon in the final, but would have been fun to see.

Not to mention everyone in the stadium knew it was going to be a fake.

Why do you think it won't work?
I'm struggling to find an example of a failed college head coach that made the jump to the NFL in quite this same way and had success.  I'm going to guess the list is short to non-existent.

He would be a great NFL QB position coach or "throwing coordinator" or whatever they call it now.

You're missing the point.

I don't care what criteria you use, there are two levels: 1) Bama and Clemson and 2) everybody else. To me, "best" or "deserving" from 3-64 is merely a decision to see who gets boat raced by one of these two at the end of the day. Who cares if UCF is in or not? If Bama doesn't steamroll them, Clemson or someone else they play will. Same goes for UGA, Ohio, Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, whomever.
Steamed rolled UCF,  LSU barely beat them against a backup Qb!

Why do you think it won't work?
Joe, Kingsbury was 5-7 with Pat Mahomes as his starting QB.  He was 19-35 overall in the Big12.  He had Baker Mayfield in the palm of his hand and thought Davis Webb was the better QB for his team, forcing Mayfield to transfer.  He has demonstrated nothing as a head coach to indicate he can be a successful head coach at the NFL level. He couldn't win in the Big12 and let a Heisman caliber QB slip through his fingers.  And, he's tied his fortunes to Josh Rosen, who was probably the worst of the rookie QBs from the '18 draft class.

Why do you think this will work?

Only 7 penalties all game.

Glad the refs let them play it out. Only saw 1 obvious miss, but I think they did a great job.
They had 5000 commercials.  Imagine if they had called 20+ penalties.  The game may still be going.

UGGGH...getting rolled, drinking too much to sooth the rolling, then flying from FL to WI was not a good idea.

Not much to say to what was i'm sure thorough game discussion...Clemson ultimately was better and peaked at the right time on top of that.  And they knew where to attack...the young (and confused) secondary.  Biggest surprise to me was the time Lawrence had, which was where many experts were pointing to as what would be the difference for Bama.  Didn't like the offensive play calling either, but having really liked the play calling in big situations from Locksley.

Corp pointed to it after Oklahoma and i agreed...don't recall seeing the team this loose and undisciplined.  I think (as i said then) that the crazy coaching turnover is catching up with us finally.  We'll see how that plays next year with some stability (Locks replaced by Enos).

Ultimately congrats to @bigmarc27 and other Tiger fans!  Great year, great team, great coach.

I can agree with the confusing play calling by Bama at times.  Jacobs in the wildcat was not stopped all night.  Yet he was inexplicably absent on the goal line when Clemson got the turnover on downs.  They rush Stewart a couple of times and then Tua trying to get wide... on the short side of the field.. with no TE in the back corner of the end zone just in case?  It was a gift to the Tigers.  As a Tiger fan I was very happy not to see #8 there.

No need to even mention the ridiculous FG fake.  Another gift.

GG, I’m sure we’re not done with this matchup just yet so there’s some battling left to be done. It’s kind of funny that for years, people could only knock Saban on the fact that his offense was “old” and just imposed their will running the ball. When you beat ND in the title game it was just running the ball down their throat (Lacy that year I think?), and going against that the other night was a big reason the game got out of hand. Tua was off, but the running game was still very effective and I think if Saban reverted back to his “old” ways, the game is tight-ish well into the 4th.

Anyway, I’m just happy that we’re the program that can give Bama a run for their money since you’ve been the gold standard for so long. Also please don’t poach Dabo when that day eventually comes.

That Jumbo formation on the goal line was working for Bama as well. Clemson (that I saw) never picked up on it.

How bout just make the Sec sissy's play somone besides division two teams.  That just turned division one.  The rest would take care of itself.
Despite the B1G's sneaky little effort to schedule bowl games against lower ranked SEC teams, the SEC outscored the B1G 153-80 and went 3-1 against them.

I keep seeing OU listed as a possible destination for Hurts, no way in my opinion. Optics aren't great but aside from that he wouldn't be a lock to win the job at OU, and I assume he's not looking for a QB competition.

Tennessee would be hilarious.

Dumb question. Can you guys fill me in on how the transfer rules work? How are the players restricted on this (if they are)?

He’s a graduate transfer so he’s immediately eligible.  Justin fields though needs a waiver to avoid sitting out.  I don’t think saban can block hurts from any schools.

Well this is an academic decision, the football aspect is secondary,  he's looking for a graduate program that isn't offered at Bama.

Really there are no restrictions on these grad transfers. They have to have at least a year of eligibility left, but as long as they've graduated they are able to transfer and play immediately. The school doesn't have to release them and I don't believe they can place restrictions on where they transfer.

I'd be curious for others' thoughts. I saw posted the other day an idea on how to keep FCS games but eliminate them from consideration for the regular season schedule: play them as spring ball exhibition games and still make the payout.

This seems like a win-win where the games aren't outright eliminated, but could arguably force all teams to play 12 FBS regular season games to be postseason eligible.

Mullen gets another grad transfer

Former Louisville linebacker/defensive lineman and team captain Jonathan Greenard will transfer to the University of Florida for his senior season. Greenard graduated from Louisville in December and will be immediately eligible to play in 2019 as a graduate transfer.

Wow - from twitter - Oakland A's expect Kyler Murray to enter NFL draft.
This is not surprising. He can get more guaranteed NFL money, and if it doesn’t work, go back to baseball in 3 or 4 years.

Before Shart Pool guys chime in on his height, keep in mind his skill set. He can make big boy throws, is more elusive than any NFL QB ever, and he’s got that “thing.”

So he’s going to High A regardless, and in late April he’ll get drafted in the NFL. If it’s in the 4th round he stays with the A’s and then reports in September. If he’s taken in the first round he reports in early August. He’s in control, it’s brilliant IMO.

This has got to be the weakest QB class in years so I think it’s an easy call to go pro now.

Sooooo I don’t think I ever brought this up but I did the campus sports talk show at Clemson when I was a student and we interviewed Whitehurst. We were just chatting and at one point his height came up in regards to playing QB. He said that was the most overrated metric for QB and that even being 6’4”, it wasn’t like he could see over both lines with their hands up. He still had to find the throwing lanes just like anyone else would and throw to spots with anticipation when those lanes opened up.

:goodposting:

The SEC keeps their Gimp (Ohio State) chained up in the basement for whenever they need to get their rocks off without too much effort

He was, for lack of a better term, the office manager for the football program.  Handled a lot of internal stuff, coordinating recruiting visits, assigning bag men to said recruits.
:lmao:  at the thought of a GT bag man.  I’m picturing either Dan Ackroyd from Trading Places or the Indian guy from Harold and Kumar.
