2018 MLB Regular Season Thread! Current thread batting average: .420 (1 Viewer)

Typically moves like this amount to nothing for both players tend to be just OK. It seems terrible because Shaw has been great and Thornburg hasn't pitched.
A 3B has a higher ceiling. The best RP last year was Kenley Jansen, who had an fWAR of 3.2. There were 10 3B last year who had fWARs that were higher, and two that were the same.

That's also putting aside that Boston's corner IF situation wasn't exactly settled at the time of the trade. Or that Shaw has four years of control left after this year, Thornburg two.

I know it's hard admitting that the guy driving the bus is a moron, but, well.

Color guys come and go.  There are always younger ex-players.  Most don't have enough to say about the game to talk for 500 hours per year about the subject.
Ron Coomer is the color guy on the Cubs radio broadcasts. He's a big "points on the board", "take it one game at a time",  type of broadcaster. His other thing is to address Cubs players with nicknames: KB, Rizz, Addy, Jakey, Zobes.

However, during last night's game between the Cubs and Atlanta, he spent a solid inning talking about what Freddie Freeman would have to learn switching from 1st to 3rd base (something that Coomer had to learn when he played). It was without question the most interesting and insightful thing I have ever heard from the guy--I couldn't believe it. He talked about positioning, throwing angles, trajectories, being cognizant of the count, and other nuances in perfect clarity.

I wish he and other color guys would stop with the shtick and the painful catchphrases, and instead focus on the minutiae of the game. It is a lot more interesting.

I don't think using WAR is a fair basis for comparing value of relievers vs. position players.  The metric is heavily weighted by playing time which penalizes a high leverage, low workload arm.

I agree that the $/IP numbers for relievers doesn't make intuitive sense but year after year, we see smart organizations with better data than we have making trades and agreeing to contracts that seemingly overvalue relievers.

@Wrigley How is Schwarbs looking since his return? Numbers have been decent but how is he looking(approach etc.). Haven't seen many of his ABs since returning.

Where's the vent thread becuase having DJ, Reynolds and Desmond going today is really pissing me off.

Twins have a -60 run differential and are .5 out of first. They are a worse version of the 2016 Rangers.
This is what's  great about baseball, metrics don't matter.  If you had a business with a negative 60 metric, your stockholders would want your hide, in baseball a team that lost 100 games last year and now is only .5 games out of first is amazing and the league and fans love it.  This is what makes baseball so special!

17 runs, 19 hits and these three combined to go 1-12 with a walk, 2 runs, 1 RBI?

how is that even possible?
Arizona put twelve on the board today. I couldn't wait to see the boxscore and what kind of damage Goldschmidt did.

0-5 with four K's.

With JD out as well.  And Peralta + Pollock only coming in as a PH.

I've been busy, so I'm not totally sure if I screwed this up or if it was yahoo...but I swear Corbin was listed as today's starter.  Not yesterday's.  That would have been nice to balance out those McCarthy and Fulmer trainwrecks...

Taijuan scratched and put on paternity list, Corbin moved up a day to fill his spot.

The Seattles deal top prospect Tyler O'Neill to the Cardinals for LHP Marco Gonzales.

O'Neill has been having a down year at AAA but Gonzales hasn't shown much since returning from Tommy John surgery.   I don't get DiPoto's plan here.  O'Neill is the second highly rated bat he's dealt since taking the job.  Alex Jackson went to the Braves in the off-season and has had a breakout year in the Florida League.

He probably just realized he forgot to throw him into the package he gave up for Phelps

Maybe he wants everyone to talk about how smart he is like they did with Jack Zduriencik

On the Cubs radio broadcast Pat Hughes mentioned that Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina had recently broken the Cardinal record for starts with the same battery: 248. Bob Gibson and Tim McCarver held the previous record.

He asked where that ranked overall in recent times. It took awhile, but he got the answer. I guessed wrong. Anyone have a guess (answer below).

Tom Glavine and Javier Lopez.
