2018 MLB Regular Season Thread! Current thread batting average: .420 (1 Viewer)

I appreciate all 11 of the likes in the Rays thread though dude. That was....odd.

You did miss my 2 positive posts though. Surely just a mistake.

Tampa saves a few million by trading Span and Colome now instead of July 31st.  I watched Span play CF for the Giants last year and he's not a viable defensive option.  I guess he's an upgrade over Ben Gamel.

The Seattles have a poor farm system which helped Andrew Moore to get called up after only one year in the minors.  He started nine games last year and was susceptible to the long ball.  He doesn't have a plus fastball.  Lord knows how Tampa will use him.

You can't really defend the Rays moves because you know they're a garbage franchise, you admit as much all the time in the Rays thread.

I get why you want to defend them when I dump on them. "No one picks on my little brother but me" etc...

I just thought you'd have better than "what about the Jays"

I don’t know why this is so difficult.

1. The rays made some bad moves this offseason. Dumping Dickerson was a farce.

2. The rays made some good moves this offseason. Getting out of Longo’s contract sucked at the time but will probably work out great.

3. They started off in awful fashion which further highlighted those moves.

4. They are quite a bit better now and were at .500 a few days ago.

5. They’ve done better this year than like 13-14 teams. Including your beloved Jays.

6. Bringing Trump into this when it had absolutely no place and knowing how much I hate the guy is one of the all-time “omg I literally have nothing left to say let me find the dumbest thing possible” moves.

All of these things can be true.

long time sawx fan here.  don't get the shock and dismay about the DFA.  sure, the guy was an internal part of the roid years, but it's a business.  dude is waaaayyyyyy too expensive for the production.  later man ram, go pee somewhere else.

At 35, Russell Martin is making the standard late career transition to... shortstop?

Starting at SS for the first time in his career today.
Can’t wait for the barrage of people trying to snag him to fill their SS spot before they realize he wasn’t even that good for a C spot.

Martin starting in left field today because why not
Explain this to me. Jays just don’t care or have anyone in the minors that could fill in? I admit to not watching any Jays games this year, but this seems odd to say the least.

ETA: And he’s slashing .165/.294/.322, wtf?

They want to keep Luke Maile's hot bat in the lineup I guess and Martin, despite that ugly line gets the established veteran/contract treatment and gets to stay in as well.

If he can hit a bit better, I think Martin as a super utility guy who can also catch could be really valuable and it's a way to maybe the extend the career of a 35 year old who they're committed to anyway. I mentioned in the callups thread, the Jays have Danny Jansen in the minors as a catcher of the future, if Martin were to be in this role more permanently.

Joe Maddon and Clint Hurdle were both on the field at the same time arguing with separate umpires about the same play.

I have never seen something like that before.

Note, however, that if the runner has already been put out then the runner on whom the defense was attempting to make a play shall be declared out.
That's the important part.  The hitter should have been out.

Was anyone watching Astros/Yankees yesterday?  I was, but without the sound on.  The Verlander hat tip.  Were the Yankees' fans cheering him, or was it a subtle, "I own you guys" move?

The part that was questionable to me was whether or not he "slid within the reach of the base without changing his pathway for the purpose of initiating contact".  It looked to me like he did change his pathway but was it intentional?  There could certainly be an argument that he was within reach of the base, right?  I think it was one of those plays that was probably legal (by the letter of the law) but maybe a little dirty.

He'll get plunked today (which is unfortunate for me since I have Kingham in the lineup).     :(

Are others treating Charlie Morton as an official do not bench? I'm keeping him in there @ NYY but can't say I'm not nervous about it.

The still that Mr. Pack posted doesn't quite tell the whole story.  I felt like he went into his legs with the obvious intention of breaking up the double play, but Rizzo also let up a little bit.  Unfortunately he still hurt him.

I'd rather be wrong with him in my lineup.  He's missing bats and keeping the ball on the ground at top tier rates.

Morton is a must start.  Last time against the Yanks, he went 7 and 2/3rds giving up 2 hits, 2 walks, 1 ER with 10 Ks.  He's had 2 games all year where he's given up more than 2 ERs.  He's a stud.

Giants are on the last stop of what's been a 1-5 road trip.  Smarj leaves the game after one inning.  Pudge Jr. relieves him and takes a 108 mph liner off his shin.  Did I mention they're in Colorado?

ETA:  Now down 10-3.  Panda's gonna pitch before it's over.
