2018 NCAA Tournament/Shtick Thread: TBS cameraman focused on crying kid who just happens to be up too late (2 Viewers)

You can always tell when somebody knows they are drawing dead in an argument when they start posting multiple laughing smilies, then make stuff up, and then do the “I just can’t” shtick.

The creepy PMer knows who he is.

You were using seed numbers :lmao:
No I was using sagarin, which I’ve mentioned multiple times now and you’ve ignored because you know it’s bad for your take. However, the seeds were fairly spot on this year with some issues. Loyola was accurately in the 10-12 range.

I don’t know what somebody PM’ing you has to do with a conversation between you and I. You’re a real weirdo.

Are these not seed numbers?

Michigan is fine, but I highly doubt they’re the second best team. Needed a buzzer beater to win round 2, then beat a 7, 9 and an 11 to get here. They had a fortunate road. Would be shocked if Nova doesn’t smoke them.

The PM has nothing to do with you.  You are the one that originally assumed that.

Of course Michigan isn’t the second best team in the tournament, that’s why they were a 3 seed. When has the NCAA basketball tournament ever been about the best two teams????

1999. UConn and Duke. Duke lost one game, UConn beat a crazy Stanford team on its own floor during the regular season and only dropped two, one to No. 16 Syracuse, and one to No. 15 Miami, 73-71. Not coincidentally, UConn and Duke gave us one of the best championship games ever.

eta* It was pretty much consensus 1-2 all across the country, and they -- the NCAA -- seeded to give it to us, miraculously. I agree with your larger point. But it did happen once.

eta2* Gonzaga should have been number three that year. They gave us a quite the scare in the tournament in the Elite Eight. St. John's in the final four also came down to Erick Barkley and a phantom walk or something. Ron Artest played for that team, as did Marvis "Bootsy" Thornton, a slim, smooth lefty with a nice jump shot.

eta3* St. John's was awesome, too. The next year, they were +8 at Duke, returning everybody while Duke wasn't, and my friend and I just laughed, bet them, and won. Well, I didn't because I couldn't get a high-speed internet connection and was stoned, but he could, and they did.

eta4* How dated does not having high-speed internet sound?

It is not controversial to say michigan is the second best team in this tourney.

Who are you arguing is a slam dunk case as being a better team?

Looking for a metric to use for picking a bracket?

How about kenpom's Adjusted Defensive Efficiency?

It's pretty darn accurate in predicting college basketball teams who will win a national championship. Since the KenPom ranking system was established in 2002, no team with a Adjusted Defensive Efficiency (AdjD) ranking of less than 21 has ever won the NCAA title. The 2009 North Carolina title team had the No. 21 AdjD ranking, but it also had the No. 1 KenPom offense, so it was able to compensate for an average defense.
Michigan -3

How many teams did michigan beat in the top 21 on its way to finals? 3

ETA: this is for capella's sake since he wont stop blathering on about rankings

This is known by the term, pulling a Christo.

It’s high time the NCAA created a tournament to determine proper seeds for its tournament. Lets decide this on the court, not by some bs computer algorithm or a bunch of fat east coast journo nerds.   #truenationalchampion

Second best overall efficiency since 2/1/18.  Top five since 1/1/18.  That's a strong sample that includes the Big 10 Tournament and NCAA Tournament.

Beilein is one of the best coaches in the game at adjustments.  That is also why season long stats and rankings aren't completely useful because they don't take into account season long improvements from coaches and teams.  The first two months of the season are trying to figure out freshmen and transfers while playing in the Bahamas and Vegas.  Apparently, people really think including that type of data is truly predictive of how good a team is.

Weird, it's almost like I posted the defensive efficiency rankings of their opponents last night.  Anybody who thinks Florida St. was an easier out than Xavier and their mush defense is :lmao:

Really think we need a series of tournaments to determine "true" seeding. Then we can start August Madness with the real national champion being crowned the night before college football kicks off.

I like him but they almost died by the three yesterday.  Didn't understand why there weren't more drives to the basket.  Loyola had them and let them off the hook with those turnovers at the end.

How about a giant home-and-home round-robin with all the conference champions?  We could call it the “Conference Of Champions”.  Sure, it’s an extra 64-game commitment, but once classes ended they can play 3-4 games a week.

And he is a great guy. He does things the right way.

FYI - he has only ever been a HC in his career. all the levels he has coached.

I think this is the biggest key that no one is talking about last night. Wagner deserves most of the credit for Michigan hanging in and winning this game, but Beilein is right behind him. Simpson struggled a ton this past game and he took him off the floor and used Poole and Simmons a lot more than usual and it paid off.

Beilein is a great coach, as is Jay Wright.  The Big East was stacked with them until the AAC.

Another underrated element of Beilein is how good he as at recruiting. He knows which guys will fit his style of play, culture, etc.

NOVA needed a little luck against WVU.
West Virginia is the only team in the tournament to have a second half lead against Villanova.  Led with 11 minutes left but Villanova being in the double bonus from there on out killed them.  It's impossible to play good defense with guys worrying about fouls and/or sitting (like Konate).  That major foul trouble is really surprising considering how many threes that Villanova shoots.  In contrast, I don't think Villanova shot a free throw until about 10 minutes left last night vs. Kansas.

Bad shooting nights happen.  They outscored Loyola 47-28 in the second half.  I'm not sure what else he could have done to better that.

77-74 forever and Ricky Moore!
Khalid El-Amin was still playing pro ball last year.  He was an All-Star in 4-5 different countries across Europe in his 30s.  Finally came back home this fall.  He's an assistant coach at the high school where he won three state titles as a player (Minneapolis North, an inner-city public high school).

First of all - Go Blue!  One of the best teams in the country.  (fair enough?)

Early commentary talks about Michigan having to slow the game down with their D and their deliberate offense.  But then again ...why?  Michigan found a way to make it to the championship game where they'll face, arguably, the best team in the country.  They have nothing to lose.   So why not just make it a shootout?  Michigan has shooters; Nova has shooters.  Run the game fast, and see who's shooters have the better game.  Michigan has had a hot shooting game just like Nova.  Who knows which team might light it up on Monday night.

And Nova has one disadvantage: They've only won by double digits.  I don't think they'd be rattled by a close game, but if their first close game happens to the championship game, who knows.

Because that isn't Michigan's game. They don't play fast.

I wonder how many people saying Michigan is the second best team in the tournament said the same about Gonzaga last year.
