2018 NHL Thread: Cappy is happy while the rest of us pray to the ping pong gods for Tuesday night (1 Viewer)

Bruins defense pairings ...

Chara-McAvoy
Moore-Carlo
Vaakanainen-Miller

(Those are the defensemen currently all out with injuries.)

Rangers two points back in the Metro and Chytil can't stop scoring.

Vesey pulled off a crazy one as well.

looks like the same story with Yeo only trusting the vets when he has a talented young group that needs more leash?
Definitely part of the problem. Bouwmeester shouldn’t have been playing nearly as much as he was. Now he has to play due to injury. He benched Dunn earlier this year for no real reason.

I think his system just sucks. I’m too hockey-dumb to really get it so that’s what I’m gonna go with because I refuse to believe a roster this talented is this bad. Allen hasn’t helped either.

If they don’t fire him after getting shut out by the Kings at home I guess he’s gonna last the year and we are gunning for that first pick. We might be anyway.

I really wish the Blues pick traded for O'Reilly pick wasn't top-10 protected. Looks like that could end up being pretty valuable. Seems like he's playing well but the team isn't. Deja vu. Something weird about that.

Buffalo fans really want to believe he’s a factor in this. He isn’t. He might actually be my favorite Blue at the moment. I like his personality, actually. And he’s a ton of fun to watch play.

And I realize Buffalo is playing well but you can’t tell me you guys wouldn’t be better off with him rather than the 3 spare parts eating roster space right now. Sobotka is terrible. Thompson needs more time.

"want to believe"? huh? I'm not sure anyone could seriously blame him for the Blues struggles this year.

he's an awesome player and a good dude. I didn't like the trade at all when it happened and still think they sold him too cheap, but it certainly looks like removing him may have helped in some ways. I'd like to see him do well as I would with just about any former Sabres players when they get traded.

Sobotka and Berglund have added some depth to the bottom-6 that was needed. Thompson likely needs some time in the AHL since he's been a healthy scratch most of the time. Not really sure why they are keeping him up. Ideally, the money they saved from trading O'Reilly will go towards a long-term deal for Skinner.

Perhaps not you, but your comment reminded me of a lot of the sentiment I see from HF Buffalo posters (yeah, I know, but there isn’t exactly any other way to keep my finger on the pulse of Buffalo sports).

Arent you guys paying Berglund and Sobotka through next year?

yes, at the time the trade was made, Berglund had 4 years left on his deal and Sobotka had 2.

Sobotka can be bought out but they don't really need to. Berglund will stick around as a useful bottom-6 guy.

I'm just saying trading O'Reilly (and not re-signing Evander Kane) left them with the space to extend Skinner even though he's going to cost a ton now.

Pominville's $5.6MM cap hit comes off the books after this year and Bogosian's $5MM comes off the year after.

Last year, almost every big contract looked like an albatross but now Pominville is playing on the top line and Bogo is actually healthy for the time being. Berglund at $3.85MM for 3 more years isn't great but it's not terrible since he can take draws and handle tougher matchups to free up Middlestadt. Sobotka was a dump for the Blues but he's not hurting the team out there.

These Rangers.  They just don't have a very good roster but keep winning.  Their #1 line is worse then most teams #3 lines.  And while their 2 & 3 lines are okay, it's not like the lineup is littered with all-stars at all.  They have their 2017 #1 pick toiling on the 4th line where he is never going to be surrounded by high caliber NHL talent.  Oh, and they healthy scratch Skjei the past 2 games now and Zuccarello is out.

I am very confused as to the Skjei situation as I was just watching them the other day and their going through the Dmen and it's like Pionk, Shattenkirk, Staal, Smith...okay....DeAngelo, Claesson wtf.

It does seem that Shestyorkin is dominating the KHL.  Not sure how that will translate to the NHL, but I guess it's better than being shredded.

I think his system is very effective but it takes a very disciplined group which is probably why he leans heavy on vets.  pretty demanding guy so it probably takes the right fit to make it work.  Boudreau has gotten so much more out of basically the same group in Minnesota with a much more free flowing and player friendly style though it's hard to be compared to one of the most productive coaches of all time.  but plenty of guys have been successful with a structured style so maybe he's just not good.

@JaxBill10: In a span of 12 hours Craig Berube and Ken Hitchcock have been named NHL head coach. At this rate John Stevens should be hired by someone by Black Friday. #FlyersRetreads #SameOldSameOld

All of these coaching changes and i have to read this.  Grrrrr.

@charlieo_conn: Lehtera taking line rushes at center today in practice on Line 4 with Weise and Laughton on the wings.

Didn't Hitch run the Stars into the ground in an epic crash landing last season?

And now he has the keys to Team McDavid?

I think the Bishop injury crushed them last year.  They only missed the playoffs by 3 points though.

Jesus. Youngblood rules.
Heh. It's a fantastic disaster. I listed it in my "movies you like more than critics or others." I think I was told that people liked it. I was surprised. It's almost campy in a way.

To each his own. I've seen it over ten times, so I can't hate it that much. And Cynthia Gibb ruled back then, so there's that.

I’m interested to see what Hitchcock does with the Oil. I assume he’s just a placeholder until they completely clean house this offseason and I still fondly remember when he took over for Davis Payne and instantly turned the Blues around. It was a lot of (regular season) fun for a couple years.

If you were born before 1980, chances are Youngblood is one of your favorite hockey movies after  Slap Shot. Heck, it might even be your favorite. Whereas the 1977 comedy lampooned hockey’s violence, 1986’s Youngblood portrayed it as a necessary part of the game, while also highlighting hockey’s grace and skill. The film stars Rob Lowe as Dean Youngblood, who leaves his family farm in upstate New York to play junior hockey for the Hamilton Mustangs. Although he can skate and score, he can’t fight. He tries to fit in with his teammates, woos his coach’s daughter and in the end has to stand up to the league’s biggest bully.

Thirty years later, Youngblood stands tall as one of hockey’s cult classics.
