I take it, it is in Fox's best interest to become a free agent and not sign with the Canes?

Buffalo is garbage tonight. They Look like an AHL team against the struggling Leafs. Hutton keeping it interesting tho.

Caps-Ning is one of the games of the year through 2 periods but huge loss of Kempney for Washington at end of second. Looked bad. Caps need to stay out of the box because they can’t compete with TB’s PP. Depending on how the latter part of this game goes, Wilson might be looking to scrap

Damn good game

He would have to return for his senior season in order to do that, and I'm not sure that would be the right call for him. He is ready and supposedly wants to play in the NHL now, so I'm not sure the wait would be worth the risk for him. Whether the Canes can get him signed, and when (Harvard likely will be an NCAA team) is another question.

Being hard of hearing, I can read lips pretty well - Wilson was basically telling Cernak to "drop the gloves and fight you p####," and then calling him a "p####" pretty much after every play stoppage.  TB seemed unwilling to engage Willy sans gloves.  Probably not a bad strategy as they were doing a great job with the physicality without punches.

I'm more worried about the loss of Kempney because of the impact on the D pairing chemistry than I am on him/his skills individually.  Djoos looked good last night, so it's a down-grade, but not as big as it could have been without Jensen on board now.

Oh please Cernak went after Wilson during the first game and he skated away. He’s a coward.

Dropped-his-gloves-went after or just ran his mouth and stuck-his-gloves-in-his-face went after?  I saw the latter...I haven't seen the prior.  I don't imagine Wilson would back down from a fight...unless he's waiting for somebody to call him out on it a-la Olesiak.

I'd love to see Chara fight Wilson. And...if the B's can do it, it may be coming.  Chara is a legend in the fight game. Just whipped ### last night or the night before. A little tippling these days. Stupid fight.

Chara probably still the scariest dude in the league due to his reach. Wilson and Lucic have to be right up there as well.

Yeah. Wilson and Lucic mash, too. Watched a whole thing on Chara and fighting. People are scared of him. Backes has started to drop gloves for the Bruins. Chara has, too. It's weird. We have Boston and Arizona on in my family these days and they're just weird in different ways.  Boston brawls. AZ is speed and neutral trap and Tocchet, so it seems to me.

Anyway, just spitballing

The game in Tampa, Cernak told him let’s go 3-4 times and Wilson just kept skating backwards while doing that tough guy waving his arms shtick.
I was surprised Wilson didn't take that bait. It would have evened up the penalty. Very unselfish and unlike him.

Either Cernak or Paquette will get their chance at him, before the season ends.

I think it’s pretty ####ty that Boston is ok with Backes changing his game to be a pest/fighter. He has a pretty nasty concussion history. He deserves better than that.

there's so few fights these days, it's pretty weird that he feels a need to do that to make himself useful

that's on him. He doesn't have to play that way but he offers so little otherwise. Another bad contract from Sweeney
And there was a quote from Backes in a Globe article a week or so ago where he said he understands the risks and knows exactly what he's doing. Can't pin it on mgmt.

It is weird though as Backes comes off as one of the smartest guys in the room. Very thoughtful and eloquent in interviews, not someone you'd expect to be reckless with his own health. He's clearly thought it through.

No slight on Chara as he has done some admirable time in his career as an enforcer, but that reach is truly what makes him such a threat.

I honestly don't know why people bother trying as Chara can simply grab and extend his left arm, and just use his length for overhands or uppercuts, or for leverage in bringing people down.

But he's more of a tactician. He would be toast against a guy like Probert in his prime, though, even with the 5-6 inch height advantage.

But whatever -- glad the game has moved away from the rock 'em sock 'em days.

And 16 more wins after that or who gives a crap.
Hey, remember in 2015 when Braden Holtby tied the all-time record for wins in a single season? Who cares.

Remember 2017 when he had a mediocre regular season, then made one of the most famous saves in NHL history and won the Cup? Of course.

Nobody is saying it’s bigger or more important than the cup. It can still be it’s own impressive thing on its own. This psychology that everything sucks and is meaningless and you’re a loser unless you do this one very important thing is so weird to me.

For 30 other teams nothing matters at all every season? That’s a pretty poor mindset.

It's why I stopped watching for a while. I didn't like the goon element. The modern game, without fights, is a better game IMHO. But I'm the last to solve the crazy intractable problem that is five for fighting in hockey, so I won't. I mentioned it because it looks and sounds like the Bruins are back to it, and I can't think that but for Tampa's excellence they wouldn't be.

It's a tough issue, and thought about and written about by smarter than I.

Speaking of Holtby, he declined to join the Caps on the short ride down to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on Monday: "My family and myself, we believe in a world where humans are treated with respect regardless of your stature, what you’re born into. ... You’re asked to choose what side you’re on, and I think it’s pretty clear what side I’m on."

This has me shuked.  Backes has always been a physical player, and as a third liner now, knows his role is to help protect some of the younger, more skilled guys.

Chara got challenged by Matt Martin in a game the Bruins were embarrassing the Islanders in with their skill and team play (not fists), as Martin tried to somehow spark his team, and Chara simply obliged him. Read Chara's comments about his respect for Martin after the game.

It's not like the Bruins are out gooning it up, but sure, they can be physical when they need to be.
