Tyson Barrie a Leaf!!!!!!
@MapleLeafs: .@Sportchek Player Alert: The @MapleLeafs have acquired defenceman Tyson Barrie, forward Alex Kerfoot and a 2020 sixth-round pick (COL) in exchange for Nazem Kadri, Calle Rosen and a 2020 third-round pick (TOR).Tyson Barrie a Leaf!!!!!!
I like that trade for Colorado. Spezza deal makes a bit more sense now.Tyson Barrie a Leaf!!!!!!
It's his injury history of late. He could be struggling a lot in year 4.JaxBill said:That seems like a lot of term for Varlamov. Especially when his AAV screams "You're better than most backups but not a franchise goalie."
It's only one year. But they should have gotten another 3rd pick or near that IMOHonestly, I think the Colorado/Toronto swap truly works for both teams, with each moving out players they were in a position of strength at for players at a position they were weaker at, but Colorado retaining half of Barrie's salary kind of baffles me, other than it's the only way Toronto can make the trade.
Colorado has plenty of cap space to absorb that.Aaron Rudnicki said:I like that trade for Colorado. Spezza deal makes a bit more sense now.
Edit: Didn’t realize they were eating 50% of Barrie’s salary. Toronto definitely lost some valuable assets but I guess that have a Gardiner replacement/upgrade plus room for Marner.
they certainly do. but surprised they couldn't get more from Toronto in exchange for helping them out with their cap issues. Kadri is a pretty valuable trade chip though so I suppose it makes sense.Colorado has plenty of cap space to absorb that.
Just read a note on the trade - turns out Kadri's contract is a 2M signing bonus on July 1st - 2.5M salary - the bonus of which the Leafs paid on July1 . So the money comes to nearly a wash - not sure how that bonus affected the AAV for the cap in 2020. So it may not be as bad as originally thought.they certainly do. but surprised they couldn't get more from Toronto in exchange for helping them out with their cap issues. Kadri's cap hit is still 4.5, Colorado will only be paying 2.5 this year.Just read a note on the trade - turns out Kadri's contract is a 2M signing bonus on July 1st - 2.5M salary - the bonus of which the Leafs paid on July1 . Aho wanted a 5-year term (for $9.5MM/year). Canes were only offering an 8-year term (for $7.5MM/year).Everyone agrees Bergevin's offer sheet was an easy one for the Canes to match. A bit of a "joke" offer as they say. My question is why did Aho's camp agree to it?
Because he didn't think he could get a better deal from the Canes. RFAs generally get less than market value because teams know they don't have much leverage (outside of an offer sheet). So the offer the Bergervin submitted was more favorable to Aho (through some combination of higher AAV, shorter term, and more bonuses) than the one he expected to receive if he negotiated the Canes only, but still way less than his "real" value (which made it easy for Carolina to match). At the end of the day, Carolina likely ended up with a slightly less favorable contract than they were hoping for, but still a very favorable contract overall.Everyone agrees Bergevin's offer sheet was an easy one for the Canes to match. Karlsson (VGK) - 5.9MM × 8-years is another data point.in terms of RFA deals signed thus far,
Aho (CAR) - $8.5MM x 5-years
Meijer (SJS) - $6.0MM x 4-years
Actually, I don't think Bergevin is as much of a donkey as we originally thought. He front end loaded the deal such that Carolina would have to come up with $21MM within a week of matching. Bergevin was betting they'd find that difficult. I still think it was an easy decision for Carolina but I bet they had to scramble a little to find the liquidity.Aho wanted a 5-year term (for $9.5MM/year). Canes were only offering an 8-year term (for $7.5MM/year).
This makes him a UFA at age 26, when he can cash in on a monster long-term deal most likely.
It's a fair deal so I assume he was good with taking a bit less to become a UFA as soon as possible. The only downside for Carolina here is the term, but they can easily live with this AAV so Bergevin basically made things easier on Carolina imo.
$21MM in the first 12 months. Not the first week. Dundon clearly had no problem matching. They laughed about how easy it was for them.Actually, I don't think Bergevin is as much of a donkey as we originally thought. Yeah, that was it for me, they had just shown they were willing to literally buy a draft pick. Plus Dundon lit money on fire with that stupid football league I won't pretend to know the name of. And Carolina just had their most profitable season in years with the playoff run. $$ not an issue for Canes right now.$21MM in the first 12 months. Not the first week. Same team just spent $3.8MM to buy out Marleau. There was zero chance they’d let Aho walk for that deal and the draft pick compensation.
But I think the $11.3M signing bonus for Year 1 is due within one week of the Canes matching the offer. Then the Year 2 signing bonus would be due within seven days of the anniversary date next July. The rest is the "paltry" $700K annual salary spread out over the season.$21MM in the first 12 months. Not the first week. Dundon clearly had no problem matching. Anyone who thinks an NHL owner (whose team just made the conference finals and spent $4MM to literally buy a draft pick) can’t come up with $11MM to keep their best player is out to lunch. Bergevin was played. But I think the $11.3M signing bonus for Year 1 is due within one week of the Canes matching the offer. That was a weak ### attempt by Bergevin but I still contend letting somebody else negotiate your star player extension is bad business.Anyone who thinks an NHL owner (whose team just made the conference finals and spent $4MM to literally buy a draft pick) can’t come up with $11MM to keep their best player is out to lunch. Oh, absolutely. All indications are the Canes were thrilled with the deal. Just noting that they weren't spreading the entire $21M out over a year.Anyone who thinks an NHL owner (whose team just made the conference finals and spent $4MM to literally buy a draft pick) can’t come up with $11MM to keep their best player is out to lunch. Grapes......wait!!!@CompleteHkyNews: Rogers has not and may not renew the contract of Don Cherry, potentially ending Coach’s Corner after 37-years, per Steve Simmons.
If this is the end, I for one am going to miss our eccentric suit wearing, Canada/Ontario loving, out of touch old man. https://twitter.com/CompleteHkyNews/status/1147692150437666818/photo/1
Beauty trade. I thought everybody gave up on Alex at this point.Chicago trades Henri Jokiharju to Buffalo for Alex Nylander.
Not sure why though ..
He's 27. Surprised he didn't go for just a 2 year deal and hope the new CBA raises the cap.4 x 3.5MM for Ferland in Vancouver.
Man, he really hurt himself by not signing something with Carolina earlier. Not a bad pickup for Couver at that price.

AbdelkaderThe Athletic article on the ten worst contracts is pretty interesting. I'll post the list later but does anyone want to take some guesses who's on there?
He was the first honourable mention, so likely #11.Abdelkader
