2019 NHL Offseason Thread - Evander Gets Lightweight Suspension (1 Viewer)

Both the best/worst were good reads.

Was surprised Zibanejad didn't make the cut for one of the best. $5.3 x 3 more years is a steal at his recent production.

Agreed!  Offshet by the fact the Rangers get to pay Brendan Smith 4.35m for the next two years to be a healthy scratch/7th defenseman/13th forward/generally useless

what is going on with Jake Gardiner?

Last year, Maroon was one of the latest name UFA players to sign and he signed with the Blues on July 10th. He's still out there again, but most assume he'll stick around in St. Louis.

There's been almost no buzz on Gardiner, but I've been assuming he'll wind up somewhere like Montreal or Detroit. Have to assume that means he's unhappy with the offers he's getting and will have to take something short-term.

Probably keeps thinking if Vancouver would give Myers that much money, he should hold out for $15 million a year.

The Athletic article on the ten worst contracts is pretty interesting. I'll post the list later but does anyone want to take some guesses who's on there?
Rick DiPietro

life long Islander fan, with Loungo retiring this year, it brings back painful memories of what could have been. I was working the draft party @ the coli and learned that they traded Lou for the #1 pick that morning.

Concerns about his back issues last season costing him millions, it seems.

That or he's waiting for the Marner offer sheet we've been hearing about for six months to clear out the Leafs cap and return to Toronto.

I’m hoping Maroon doesn’t stick around here. He was great in the playoffs, but I’m not so sure he will be able to have a run like that again and otherwise he was pretty terrible. I think he should just leave St. Louis on top.

I would guess at this point he’s hoping for a better offer than the bottom of the barrel offer Armstrong has given him. Most people in St. Louis feel like he’s probably gone.

Go Leafs!

Not sure why Alzner isn't on that list.

What about that was particularly harsh? There were rumors in Dec/Jan he was about to get cut. When Thomas started to emerge, his game turned around. In the cup finals when Thomas got hurt, his game fell off again.

The guy will always be a legend around here, and deservedly so. He brings a certain tough element no one else on the team really has but the rest of his game is just too bad for me to want to give him a roster spot. If St. Louis wants to reward him then they should give him a nice FO position.

Id be more than happy to watch him get a nice fat contract somewhere else and be a major contributor on another cup winner to eat some crow. Hopefully it’s a team that hasn’t won a cup in a long time or ever.

Agreed.  Maroon will always be a huge hometown favorite no matter what - heck, he scored one of the biggest goals in Blues history (against Dallas) - but I get why he is unlikely to return.

So we're just going to run with this thread title all summer?  :oldunsure:

Makes sense really or wait until he does something else just as stupid.

Does anyone have season tickets for a team here? One of my friends is a VGK sth and they had a game/player used/worn sale today where there were sticks, skates, jerseys, gloves, name plates, etc. Was curious if any other team in the league does this or if this was a fantastic money grab by the VGK organization.

I use ti have Ducks ST's and they use to do things like this every year.

Marner news should be coming soon.  :coffee:  that'll be a perfect time for new title.
Bob Mackenzie disagrees

@TSNBobMcKenzie: People seem to be thirsty for hockey news. While on vacation, I’m just thirsty. I laughed at someone who said, “Report Marner.” Now, I could be wrong but I’ll bet the vast majority of currently unsigned RFAs will still be unsigned when I report back for duty after Labour Day.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: As for Marner, my view from afar is that it’s probably close to or at the point where TOR hopes an offer sheet is tendered. That would allow/force closure, one way or the other. Match the offer sheet or take the compensation, but it would be done.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: Because, unless I’m reading this wrong, there exists a fundamental difference in the perception of value/term between the two sides and it’s going to make getting a negotiated settlement very difficult. OK, back to vacation. That bike isn’t going to ride itself to town.

yeah, nothing about the Marner situation points to a quick resolution. Nylander held out until the deadline on December 1st. Leafs don't really have the luxury to pay Marner what he wants, and he doesn't seem likely to give much in return if he feels he deserves a Matthews-level contract.

I am part of a Bruins season ticket group but not the account holder. So I am not always privy to everything that comes our way but I know the B’s do the “shirt off their backs” giveaway on ice after the last home regular-season game. My buddy also did a between-periods on-ice contest a year or so ago. But I’m not aware of equipment sales or anything like that.

The Edmonton Oilers have a Locker Room sale every year in early June. It is open to the general public, not just season ticket holders.

I’m a Bolts season ticket holder. They do this annually. We get the first crack at this stuff before the public. I’ve never gone.

I mean what the #### am I going to do with used hockey gloves? I’m old, fat, can’t skate and the coolest it gets here is 65.

I’m sad they didn’t have any broken sticks. That would have been awesome lol. The gloves did have a stench though. Overall it was pretty neat. Most expensive thing was game used Fleury sticks that were $1500 each.

Funny Fleury story. My wife’s step dad is a master inspector. He got to do the home inspection on the new house MAF bought. MAF kept trying to talk to him in French. Such the prankster he is lol.

He was the first honourable mention, so likely #11.
(Abdelkader made the honourable mentions list on last week’s worst contracts, but through my own personal error should’ve actually been … second. I wrote down that he only had three years left, but he actually has four somehow. My sincerest apologies). - Dom Luszczyszyn

:lmao:

Apparently before making their other trades, Toronto offered Kapanen and Brown to Carolina for Pesce but Carolina said no. Makes sense from the Canes perspective once they added Dzingel and Haula (arguably a similar pair) while holding on to Pesce.

There was also a deal done with Calgary for T.J. Brodie that Kadri vetoed, hoping to stay in Toronto.

I know this is inappropriate, but I'm sorry, it needs to be asked:

Can someone please tell me the cap implications if a player gets clipped by a Russian assassin?

The league would have to approve long term disability status before the club got any cap relief.

Dom (The Athletic) put out his most/least improved teams column today.

Most improved - Rangers, Panthers, Canucks, Blackhawks - but all still bubble playoff teams

Least Improved (got worse) - Blue Jackets, Sharks, Jets, Canadiens
