Nah you can get away with one of those guys in your starting lineup if they do lots of other things well. Draymond Green, Simmons, Ben Wallace. Plus you still have to guard Smart outside. It isn't like those other players I mentioned where they can literally play 7 feet off them and dare them to shoot and they won't or won't even come close to making it. 

Edit: I said get away with, but you actually need a guy like Smart in your lineup. There is only one basketball on the court and guys that play good defense and do other things and you don't have to call plays for them are extremely valuable.

Smart becomes a problem when he tries to move out of "great defender, good passer and guy that can hit open 3's" into "guy that needs to make plays on offense".  The bad Marcus Smart is the one that becomes a focal point of the offense.  If he stays in his lane there, he is a phenomenal asset and can be a key cog on a championship team.

Old man rant:

The new NBA where guys give up 3 footers to kick it out for a contested 3-pointer is kind of dumb.  Totally get that an open 3 is better than a contested 2 but some of these guys are passing up possible layups to kick it out.

I won’t say definitely they are fourth best in the East but no one is obviously better, IMO.  They went 18-7 in their last 25 games.  

 
Would love to hear all of the Ben Simmons takes in here some more too. Love how people hate on the guy all the time, fine by me. Keep him in here in Philly is a good thing

it's funny because he could probably put up 30 a game if he was more selfish and cared more about national media takes and ppg. But he plays smart, Toby was hot so 1st game he gets the ball to him over and over. Today Ben started off and was hitting his shots, so he kept at it.

taking the Jamal Murray injury out of this assessment, the East seems to be superior to the West this year, no? Atl-NYK have a good grinding series, and the 6'ers, Nets, and Bucks seem to be able to take close to anybody in a Finals match-up, no?

haha you're just asking for the hate now :P

I'd say it's close but I still give the nod to the West.  They were plagued with a lot of significant injuries (AD, Lebron, Klay, Murray, Kawhi, etc). 

East might be more top heavy (have a better top 3 teams), but West is definitely deeper (Has better teams 4-10).

yeah, could be stirring the pot a bit, and maybe it is from listening to the Open Floor podcast too long where Ben Golliver crapped on the East episode after episode. 

I don't think the East is way superior, but i guess after looking at the last 4-5 years, i think the East is much closer then they have been. Obviously Durrant and Harden coming to the East helped that a bit too i guess.

And i think we can throw Lebron and AD out of that equation. Definitely with Klay and Murray i would say that is a good point. And jury is definitely out on Kawhi this year, i think he is close enough to comparable to Jimmy Butler now

3rd greatest player of all time ... ALL TIME. Would move him ahead of Lebron and Jordan if the finish this series out and he hits an 19 footer. 

We know he reads this thread and resigned with the 76ers because we all hate him. Hopefully my praise will lead to everyone else loving him and breaking up the 76ers. Their reign over the NBA has lasted long enough.

heard a rumor that Danny Ainge almost got Simmons for Aaron Nesmith & Maaaacus Smaaaat's hair & makeup person, but the salaries didn't match up. glad we didn't or we might have won a game we weren't supposed to.

This is the part that reminds me of Simmons.

Never really puts it into overdrive, commensurate with his talent.

Derrick would pass up an open 15 footer for that extra pass to a less-skilled player with the same shot.

I get what you're saying. This season, and this team, has been fun but the 4 seed and a potential first round series win is their absolute ceiling without adding anyone, unless Barret makes the step to superstardom. While he's only 20 and will get better for sure, he doesn't look like he has that level of potential.

The reality is the NBA is a star driven league and this season sets the base that will (hopefully) allow them to add a guy like Kawhi. I wouldn't want them to go "full Nets" either but they do need to add a star if they want to even get to the Eastern finals let alone win a  Championship. Leaving the Nets out of it, the Sixers and Bucks each have one Superstar and one/two all-star level players. Julius Randle was great this season (although he's struggled in both playoff games), but he has to be, at best, the second best player on the team if they are going to be serious contenders.
