2020-21 NBA *Playoffs* Thread: Bucks are the champs and you can take that to the bank bromigos (3 Viewers)

Maybe Boston can interview Tim Duncan first, get all hot and heavy to hire him as head coach, then settle on Chauncey Billups.  A tweet by Rick Pitino would be a nice touch as well.

Hey, I could have added the Celtics would then get off to a slow start next season and fire Billups.  Only to then watch him become a great head coach somewhere else.

as long as he doesnt then go to Detroit and turn a buncha guys with Afros & headbands into superstars....
Now THIS is the kind of witty commentary that draws 'em in.

No more of that childish bickering about Simmons!

The key to beating Brooklyn is hoping you slow down 2 of the 3 enough to keep them in the 110 range. Then you have a shot. Otherwise you have to try to score 130-140 a game which is doable with their defense but not a recipe for sustained success.

Bucks have all the tools to do this.  Five top notch defenders and an offense that can keep pace.

I have a difficult time believing that after watching Dwight Howard set screens the last 5 games.
Wes might get whistled for five fouls on one play, all the opponents trying to run past him and, like a dive-line in an Esther Williams movie, all do their "kid falling off the high board" flops in rapid succession. may i mix you a metaphor?

But seriously, that's how I see Giannis.  The outside of the box, non-ball-dominant dominant player.  In the era of the 3-ball, he won 2 MVP's by slashing, crashing & passing (and :gasp: defending).

that's why i patterned my game after his - i was the shorter equivalent. couldnt buy a suit off the rack cuz i took a 50 jacket, 34 trousers. i had the turning radius of an Eldorado - lotsa chins in my wake
I read your posts in the voice of Kendrick Perkins.

I say this as someone who watches limited NBA so maybe this is a hot take or on point but man, Randle was not good in that series against the Hawks.  He looked unsure of himself, was easily frustrated and started being chippy the last 2 games.  Maybe he's angry at the rest of his team, no clue but what is the story here?  Wasn't he a stud during the regular season?
If you’re a big Hawks fan, you’d realize he smoked them for an average of 40PPG over three Knicks sweep wins over the Hawks this season.  He obviously has the talent.  But yeah, he played scared and unsure through this series, and it hurt us.  His turnovers also kept being catalysts for Hawks scoring runs.

Giannis is a modern day Shaq.  Tell me the next time you see a defense play straight up against him.  Opponents either double/triple team him (form a wall) or the defender attempts a flop to draw an offensive foul (ie, Blake Griffin in the next series).  That's it.  Nothing else works or is even attempted anymore.  Maybe the intentional foul to put him on the line now...just like Shaq.

It is a toss up which Nuggets team shows up tonight. I want to believe they squeak it out, but I can see the soft, let's go back to Denver group show up.

Stevens beat him regularly, same way he did Simmons (before he got the yips) - by determining the precise spot on the floor which pre-empted his basket move and having Crowder or Smaaaat or Ojeleye pick him up there. next to the pick&roll the Celtics' greatest tradition has always been beating people to their spot (admittedly more difficult each year as rules and player will continue to loosen), ever since Russell. i dont think Anteaternintendo has a Curry/Trae/Morant-type floater yet, does he?

Nuggets need to hope they go nuts from 3 and Portland is cold to have a shot in the next teo games.  That has been their fornula for success and odds are it won't continue.

Auctioned my Laker seats all day, taking the best offer I had by 5pm. I've done similar for big games for years. The seats are stupid expensive so it mitigates costs and I still see plenty of games. Just accepted an if then. They get the seats tonight, and I get X if Dallas wins. I get Y + Clippers game 7 if it happens.

If Moses Malone and Wes Unseld can lead a team to the championship, so can Giannis.
Giannis can surely lead a team to a title, sure.  But it’s pretty disingenuous to try to equate the ability of those two to win titles in the 70s and 80s to a lead cog on a team 40 years later.  Winning a title with a franchise player without much ability outside of 15 feet is infinitely more challenging in 2021 with how the game has evolved over those 40 years.

The Knitting Thread was the center of college basketball discussion to keep a particular poster from engaging.  Pretty sure it worked for over a year, at least.
If I’ve ever done any good work at FBGs (and it’s debatable) it was in the Secret Confessions Thread.  I posted a confession as Ripley’s claiming to be a closet UNC fan.

I also posted as GB Smails claiming I’d never really made that chili recipe.

Trae was fine, but the Knicks beat themselves in this series.  This wasn’t so much about ATL.
Like I said, I’m not a huge NBA watcher but had seen he destroys the Hawks regular season - that was part of why I was surprised he had such a poor series.

As for Trae, come on man - I’ve already talked about his limitations but the dude just dropped 30/10 over the 5 games in his first playoff series.  I think he was a little more than “fine”.

Yeah the Nets are 21-2 when scoring 130+. It’s possible to beat them in a shootout but definitely not ideal.

The Nuggets aren't trading Murray, even for an improvement in talent - he is too central to their culture. I also don't think Lillard is necessarily an improvement over MPJ AND Murray (if healthy). Porter might be the best shooter in the league behind Curry, Thompson, and Lillard and he's only in his 2nd season and Murray is a pretty good facsimile of Lillard.

We're just letting this one go?
Porter is making him look really smart right now.

Got to give him a break. He already bought tickets to the conference finals and then crash and burn. He will come around, but it is too soon.

From Dan Feldman —

Most points in a playoff first quarter since 1997 (as far back as basketballreference has data):

Michael Porter Jr. (tonight): 22
LeBron James (2010 CLE-BOS): 21
Gordon Hayward (2017 UTA-LAC): 21
LeBron James (2018 CLE-BOS): 21
Nikola Jokic (2020 DEN-UTA): 21

Really surprised that Mitchell or Murray didn't make that list after their duel last year in the bubble.

I havent looked at the specific stats but I'd imagine that if you can keep the big 3 to a combined 75 or lower, the probability for a win goes way up.
