2021-22 NBA Thread: Bill Simmons furiously recording 2.5 hour long pod about how Boston is still better than Golden State (1 Viewer)

Have not been into the NBA for a while... but a buddy had some great season tix for the Grizzlies this year... 5 rows off the court in the corner.

Got invited to join him for about 10 games, made it to 7-8 and had a ####### blast. This young team is so much fun to watch out there.

Shot the lock off the wallet and added a seat next to his for the 2022-23 season.

$4700 seems like a steal to be down that low for 41 games, and absent multiple major injuries this team will likely be near the top of the heap in the West for a while.
Yeah, that's a solid deal.  I'm in a similar area for the Bucks (section 104, row 12) for the Bucks, and it's $5,004/ticket.

Was at the Knicks Wiz game last night. Obi Toppin is a monster and he seemed so unassuming and shy about the attention he got from the crowd.

The end-of-season OKC tank job has reached magnificent levels. Their starting 5 tonight:

Zavier Simpson
Georgios Kalaitzakis
Vit Krejci
Jaylen Hoard
Isaiah Roby

Not only have they shut down the obvious candidates like Shai and Giddey, but guys like Tre Mann, Poku, and Theo Maledon appear to be done as well. Not even the 10-72 Process-era Philly lineups looked this bad (RoCo, Jerami Grant, Noel, Ish Smith, Kendall Marshall). Are we witnessing one of the worst starting lineups in NBA history?
OKC really is just an embarrassment at this point. Not only are they playing G-league scrubs, they're basically only playing 5 guys for the whole game. Can you imagine spending money to watch this garbage?

The NBA really should penalize them in some manner.

If you’re a GM your owner would toss you into a pit of fire if it got him Lebron. So, you do what Lebron says. Pretty easy.
Yep. And it's funny that these geniuses who rip him when his "recommendations" do not pan out never say a word when his teams win titles because they got guys LeBron wanted.

Basically, if you are saying LeBron is a disaster in LA because of this season, which ignores the fact that the Lakers, er, won a freaking title two years ago (and had been awful for the better part of a decade before his arrival), you are basically the internet version of Skip Bayless, meaning you're a troll who makes no money for your hot take hating on James rather than a shameless huckster like Bayless who has made a lot of money by being a James hater.

Considering how Lebron destroys rosters let him go elsewhere. DOn't want mercenaries on my roster.

That's also what I didn't say. I said GM has final say on Roster Lebron can have his opinion but it'll be known he will get vetoed on some of opinions and everything won't be going his way. The dude completely destroyed a legit playoff roster just because he wanted his friends there.
The dude also brought the franchise a championship in part because of his friend he brought there. Like, 18 months ago.

Some rando GM doesn’t get to have veto power over Lebron. I’m sorry you don’t understand how the world works if you think that’s possible.

I don’t think people give as much props on the bubble title.

does lebron win the scoring title, or did he miss too many games?

Smart and Theis both played really well last night.  As did Wisconsin's own, Sam Hauser, with a career-high 11 points on 4/5 shooting in 17 minutes off the bench!

One observation - with the exception of maybe James Harden, I've never seen players whine to the refs as much as Smart and Grant Williams.  Literally every single dead ball, they were in the refs' faces crying.  This despite Smart getting maybe the best whistle I've ever seen.  You could call that guy for a foul on almost every single possession.

It'll be interesting to see how the Bucks approach tonight's game against the Pistons and then Sunday's matinee against Cleveland.  We know they don't have that loser's mentality where they'd try to duck the Nets, and they talked post-game like they want the #2 seed, but health is certainly the priority.  Time will tell...
I would love to see the refs foul out M Smart in the first quarter, just once.

Oh. Because he just was bragging about his 30ppg on his instagram. Seems totally insecure for someone who has been phenomenal at what he does since he was 18. Something off about him last few years.
I think he is similar to Tom Brady in the regard that both have played so long now that while both are still wanting titles, they are so close to so many longevity records that they are both going for them.  I can't say I blame either.  The average fan is strange in that we always talk about records and stats and whatnot, but the second a superstar goes for a record or openly talks about it, it's suddenly a problem.  LBJ has become far less likable in the last few years for a variety of reasons, but I don't have an issue with him going for longevity records.

Well those people are idiots. That was an insane title to win. It was a mental war of attrition in there.
Agreed.

Not a big Danny Green fan, but when Harden came to philly, I recall reading how Green is a prolific corner 3 guy and Harden is known for getting guys open corner 3s. Thought that would dovetail nicely, but seemed like they barely played together until these last 2 games — also Green’s best of the season probably. Hmmm

Since 2017 Dirk Nowitzki has played in more games than John Wall. Actually true.

David Lee has played more games since the start of the 16-17 season than Udonis Haslem. David Lee retired after the 16-17 season. Udonis Haslem has been an active, and mostly healthy, member of the Heat for the entirety of the time since Lee retired.

Including playoffs, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green played more games in the 15-16 season than Haslem has since the start of the 15-16 season.

fun fact: Embiid first center to exceed 30ppg in over forty years (Moses Malone '80-1 - Shaq 29+ pts 3x)

 Your boys ducking Brooklyn today.

Whussupwiddat

Edit: Philly did too. Apparently Boston is the only one with the guts to step up to Brooklyn. Although it would be hilarious to see everybody give up the extra round of home court and then the Nets have an off night against Cleveland.

So thybulle got the first dose and then decided not to get second shot because it wasn’t 100% and he would treat holistically. Should have traded him and kept curry and drummond.

As a neutral I love the way the bracket in the East looks. Boston-Brooklyn (assuming they beat Cleveland) feels like 4/5 with the winner getting the true #1 seed in the second round.

Bulls get Bucks 🤣 but it doesn't really matter as Bulls haven't played like a playoff team at all

Loving 76ers-Raps. Siakam has been completely under the radar playing as well as almost anyone in the league. Hopefully FVV and Og healthy. My personal favorite 1st round series.

LOL, it's hilarious that some actually think the champs are afraid of a 7 seed that is atrocious defensively.  The Bucks are the defending champs. The Nets are paper champs.

Bucks are going to sweep Chicago.  That 3 seed was so much better than that 4 seed.  Going to be tough for Philly in round 1.

Actually hoping Boston can beat out Brooklyn.

In order to avoid the 4 seed, Boston had to win.  With Philly and Milwaukee winning Sunday, Boston couldn't be the 3 seed.  I will be a very big Cavs fan tomorrow night.

That said,, I'd rather face Brooklyn than Toronto right now.  If they had TimeLord available I'd be very confident against the Nets.  Now I think it's a 60/40 series in Boston's favor and goes 7 games.  Tatum is doing what we've hoped he would for a long time and as long as he stays in that lane and doesn't revert back, they are the better team.

I have to say that I really think the NBA was smart with the 7-10 play-in tournament.  It gives some extra drama to those last few spots and gives a decent reward to the 1 and 2 seeds. I know it’s not new but I hadn’t really payed very close attention until my team was involved.

Well they flat out made no effort to get the 2 seed. Why would you say that is when it means they won't have home court advantage if they get to the semis agaisnt the 2?

I cannot believe Morey made it like some coup that they were able to keep Thybulle, knowing he wasn't fully vaxxed.  If they could have traded him and maybe a pick and still kept Curry and Drummond, they really messed up.

A 7-seed that had to play Durant and Kyrie 40 and 39 minutes, respectively, to beat the Pacers' B team...

Is it true that Jaylen Brown isn't vaxxed, either?  If so, it would explain why the Celtics played for the 2-seed instead of resting their guys and having to play the Raptors and not having Brown for the games in Canada.

Who cares? If we can't beat Toronto missing Thybulle for 2-3 games, we don't deserve to win anything anyway.

Well, I feel like the margin for error is smaller with the current roster and that they would have been better off (regardless of vaccine) keeping Curry and Drummond based on how all have performed since the trade.  This just makes it worse.

Nets wanted Seth and Drummond. Who knows if they even wanted Thybulle. It's time for the Sixers to shut up and Win.

It's speculation based on the fact that he refused to answer the question.

Brown is a very principled guy so he is probably just standing by his belief that it isn't anyone's business.  He's also a well educated and intelligent guy and I'd be surprised if he wasn't vaccinated.

I would say that would make him more likely to not be Vaxxed.

I've never been a huge LeBron fan...with all the other extra stuff aside....for me the core of it is more about I just don't think he has ever been a really good teammate....unless it's convenient for him...and he knows the cameras are going to pan toward him on the bench or something....and I think that is what really bothers me the most....

things like leaving the bench early when his team is still playing to get a 8 minute "head start" on "treatment"....and most recently last night.....he doesn't travel with HIS team to Denver for the final game of the season to support HIS team and the guys out there cleaning up HIS mess...his excuse?....he had another MRI scheduled that morning on his ankle....oh...cool...how convenient....why don't you just come out and say your team is not worth your time to travel and be there to support them in the LAST game of the season....I'm sure you had better things to do last night, so nice excuse....you knew you were out of the playoffs....I think your freaking "additional" MRI could wait a day....you have the whole off season to take care of your freaking ankle....oh wait, that's just LeBron getting a "head start" on his treatment again....my bad

Here's my first glance, zero analysis, gut feel on how the playoffs shake out:

East:

  • Nets win play in game - get 7 seed
  • Hawks win 2 games - get 8 seed
  • Rd 1 - Heat over Hawks in 5
  • Rd 1 - Celtics over Nets in 7
  • Rd 1 - Bucks over Bulls in 4
  • Rd 1 - Raptors over 76ers in 7
  • Rd 2 - Bucks over Celtics in 6
  • Rd 2 - Heat over Raptors in 6
  • ECF - Bucks over Heat in 6
West:

  • Timberwolves win play in - get 7 seed
  • Clippers beat Spurs - get 8 seed
  • Rd 1 - Suns over Clippers in 5
  • Rd 1 - Grizzlies over Timberwolves in 6
  • Rd 1 - Warriors over Nuggets in 7
  • Rd 1 - Mavericks over Jazz in 6
  • Rd 2 - Suns over Mavericks in 6
  • Rd 2 - Grizzlies over Warriors in 7
  • WCF - Suns over Grizzlies in 6
Finals - the rematch - Suns over Bucks in 7

thoughts going into the playoffs:

- Heat over Suns in an excellent series

- Bucks could steamroll, but i got Bud getting outcoached somewhere along the line

- calves are a month, even if your recovery arcs are almost as short as LeBron's. Shame, cuz Mavs are a truly untalented team that plays very well

- if George Niang is your 6th (5th in Can) man, you should not expect to win a playoff series

- i wish i were as rich as a Canadian stripper the week Harden gets guarded by Scottie Barnes

- the wonderful thing about the burgoo of behavioral dysfunctionalities that is Kancerie Irving is that, even tho i believe he is still in the heads of all his former Celts teammates, he may well forget (or have "transcended" his desire) to use that

- the Heat have been rope-a-doping the league and are ready to compete at top levels. the Dubs think they can switch it on like the Heat will, but wont be able to.

- the Grizz are who i'm rooting for, even more than the Green (cuz i dont think Big Rob will show in time), but i never take 1st-time playoff teams seriously as contenders

- if Big JA was playing, id have the Cavs & Hawks bouncing the Nets str8out of the process

- Embiid dont deserve this

- sometime before i die, i wanna see Luka & Joka on the same team

Thought there would be more traffic in here re: Vogel finding out he was fired at the post-game conference. BUSH LEAGUE

You can't on one hand say how hard it was to win a title in the bubble and then on the other hand blame this season on injuries, but fire the coach who endured both.  Seems like some of the old vets didn't buy in though and Russ never had a real role.
