I like it. The Bills demonstrated that they're putting one foot in front of the other with a solid coaching hire, and with both feet on the ground, they're ready to get a foot ahead of the rest of the division.

Things are different now though. We have stable ownership, and our owners are apparently willing to spend what it takes to attract top-shelf personnel. Yeah, the quarterback situation is a mess. But you're not inheriting a barren cupboard like in New York, and you're not stuck with an un-cuttable coach-killer like in Chicago. Atlanta is the only HC opening that I think is clearly more attractive than ours, because of Matt Ryan.

So what are the thoughts on Whaley?

Whaley's been a mixed bag so far. He's made some really good acquisitions, and the Watkins trade looks a lot better now than it did last year IMO, but his future is going to come down to whether Manuel develops or not (or whether he can find another alternative). Buffalo would have been in the playoffs this year with just competent quarterbacking.

Also, I like the way the Pegulas handled this search. For some reason they caught a lot of flak for interviewing everybody under the sun, as if considering your options is somehow a bad thing. But once they figured out who they wanted, they didn't screw around and got it done. Basically they met Ryan for the first time on Thursday and had him hired by Saturday night.

I don't mean to be a pollyana about the ownership, because for all I know they could be the next Dan Snyder. Just that everything I've seen so far has been encouraging.

I'm a pessimist on Manuel, but there's nothing especially laughable about this. It's not that uncommon for a QB to struggle for a few years before turning into in a serviceable starter. I wouldn't bet on Manuel doing so, but it wouldn't be the first time that's happened.

That's especially true now that we know that some of his problems were created by Marrone with the instructions to play super-conservatively and avoid turnovers at all costs. Maybe a new offense regime will turn things around for him. Again, I wouldn't bet on it, but who knows?

Not to mention he was setup for failure. Things went wrong from the start with the Kolb injury and then Manuel missing a chunk of that first preseason. It for worse with his second injury. And last year the offense was a total mess. The O-line was the worst in the league. They got every QB killed and the run game was the worst in franchise history. The playcalling was unbelievably bad. Despite the screen and quick slant being Watkins' bread and butter in college, the Bills threw just 4 screens to him all year. And Marrone harped on EJ so much about ball security and playing it safe that he made Manuel scared to even throw the ball. You could see Manuel constantly hesitating despite making the correct read. Or ignoring down field receivers to make the "safe" dumpoff pass.

He may very well then out to be a bust, but he's hardly been put into a position to succeed either.

Too early to say IMO. I don't think it's a sure thing that Spiller is gone. He shouldn't be too expensive to re-sign, so the main issue is whether he wants to come back or not. If Marrone were still here, he would certainly leave. Now maybe he sticks around?

Sure, but yards allowed can be skewed by the same things, and points given up is more important than yards. Plus, what about the takeaways, sacks, 3rd down and red zone efficiency, etc.?

If you dig a little deeper, the Jets only had 1 more giveaway than the Bills last year on offense, and they had more time of possession, meaning their defense was on the field less often.

Obviously personnel comes into play, but all things considered the Jets haven't been a good defense for the last 4 years.

I disagree that they've been consistently good- for the last several years, they've been consistently average at best IMO. You could say the GM got fired for a reason after all, but you could say the same exact thing about Rex.

I'm not really worried about the defense, just trying to get a better read on the job Rex has done in the past. I was honestly surprised when I looked more closely at the Jets defensive performances.

*In the 2011 season finale, Ryan was clueless to why Santonio Holmes was on the sideline late in the game. If you can find it, listen to the Ryan post game press conference or check out New York Daily News or New York Post articles from the day after that Jets-Dolphins game.

There was major confusion with the timeout called before the Smith-to-Kerley TD pass at end of NY-Green Bay game this season.

12-men on the field happened way too often under Ryan.

There was also the time vs the Chiefs when the Jets had to call a timeout after the opening kickoff.

In conclusion, Ryan is a fine motivator who players love for the most part, but there are all sorts of technical issues with the guy (clock management, timeouts, not getting the right personnel onto the field timely, etc.) that will annoy Bills fans.

Unless the Bills get a top notch quarterback and a good OC, I see Ryan with middling results just like he had with the Jets. In conclusion, based on what I saw for six seasons with the Jets, Ryan will not win a Super Bowl with the Bills if he does not develop/find a good quarterback.

I like the Ryan hire. Buf has an outstanding D but he will elevate it to SB quality.

the defense is already great, any upgrades if any will be marginal at best. It isn't broke, so why fix it? Buffalo's offense is broken and Rex has shown he cannot lead an effective offense.Don't see how this hire makes them better.

Well, Rex made the AFC Championship game with Sanchez as a rookie and as a 2nd year player. Offensive genius Chip Kelly didn't even make the playoffs in a weak NFC with Sanchez as his veteran QB.

Well now the speculation begins of a reunion of Rex and Sanchez. Also hearing some idle banter about possibly having CB Darrell Revis leaving New England to reunite with Rex.

The chatter of Sanchez seems possible if Rex has any juice with the Buffalo front office.

In two games against the Jets this season, Orton had a 139.3 passer rating, six touchdowns and no interceptions. In his 10 other games, Orton's rating dropped to 81.3 and he posted 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Ryan's once-vaunted Jets defense finished this season 24th in points allowed, 30th in third-down conversion rate allowed and 25th in opposing red zone touchdown rate, which should give pause to anyone who thinks the Bills' defense will automatically remain one of the NFL's best under Ryan's guidance.
