2021 College football thread - Auburn’s gotta Auburn. (5 Viewers)

Forgot about that Memphis loss.  But still, that was a decent team that Cincy creamed.  ND has had a good year for sure but I have a hard time seeing them in the playoffs at the expense of Cincy.

I'm betting all the money I have left on Oregon State and will hate watch the game from Autzen.  Oregon was a fraud all along and I'm certain if they played Ohio State today it would be every bit as ugly as the Michigan State game was.  This QB makes Brady Leaf look like Johnny Unitas.  He makes me long for Jason Fife.  Hell, bring back Dakota Prokup.  I vomit further than he can throw.
Oh for crying out loud quit acting like Oregon has been a disapointment this season.  Don't tell me you wouldn't have taken a 9-2 start with a chance to play for Pac 12 championship at the start of the season.  With the youth and recruiting Cristobal is building the playoff window was always the next several years.  Future is very bright for the Ducks, they just need a decent QB which I think Thompson will be very good next year.  He is the highest ever rated QB recruit at Oregon.  Injuries have been unbelievably bad for Oregon this year with 4 or 5 starters on both offense and defense lost for the season.

They will beat OSU this week and sqeak by Utah and make the Rose Bowl again.  Not too shabby.

I predicted 9-3 before the season, so I'll take the Rose Bowl.  Still painful to lose like they did at Utah.  Also your prediction for this week and next is what I said last week as they were losing.  And then Michigan will whoop them in the Rose Bowl, unfortunately.

I'm with GM on betting on the Beavs though.  They've been outstanding as a dog this year.

Eh, I discount those class rankings. They've had some real studs, not to OSU level but no one is outside the SEC.
Other than Clemson.   Its hard to tell how much of that stud production is recruiting and how much is player development.  I'd say Franklin is comparable to B Kelly in terms of recruiting and I don't consider him a great recruiter.   Both are just short on top of the food chain talent but good at developing what they can attract.

Yeah 13 points is too much for sure but Oregon won't lose to a division II quality school like the Beavers 2 straight years.  Sorry @Manster lol

I cannot believe PSU signed Franklin for 10 years. If I was a fan, I’d be livid.
Eh. At this point, he’s probably better than what you could get on the open market. As of now, PSU is third best job out there behind LSU and USC. The Nittany Lions wouldn’t measure up in the coaching carousel as State College isn’t very sexy and in the middle of PA. To use a baseball seam head terms, he’s above replacement value.

If the days of curb stomping the east are gone, at least they are fortunate that they’re not sucking and irrelevant. Having Franklin around with a locked in 8 wins every year versus mediocrity? It’s not the best; but at least we’re not Nebraska.

GTFOH!  Apparently you haven't been paying attention.  Smith is building something in Corvallis.  Nike U is a house of cards.....all flash, no substance.

:lmao:  Building something?  Is it the 109th rated recruiting class last year or the 52nd rated recruiting class this year.  I guess that is improvement lol.  I'll take three straight top 10 classes for Oregon though.

Wow! I’m surprised by this. Are you a lone random fan that feels that way or do you think that is where most of PSU’s fandom is at?

Stark difference in the way the B1G manages coaches and expectations compared to the SEC…which shows in the consistency of programs.

So I found this about Franklin's contract on espn.com

Franklin's buyout will start at $12 million prior to April 1, 2022. It will reduce to $8 million through Dec. 31, 2022, $6 million in 2023, $2 million in 2024 and 2025 and $1 million from calendar year 2026 to 2030.
What difference does it make if it's a 7 year, 10 year, or 20 year contract if the buyouts are going to be so low?  Those buyout numbers are tiny compared to some we see in the $20 million range.  Relative peanuts for a school like PSU to come up with if they want to move on.

ETA:  Also relatively inexpensive for Franklin (or his new school) if he decides he wants to move on in a couple years.

If Thompson were as good as you say he would be playing.  Anthony Brown is hardly irreplaceable.  The fact that Brown hasn't been replaced is very telling.  The WRs (the ones who stayed) are constantly voicing frustration and why wouldn't they?  The offense is completely one dimensional and entirely too predictible.  They are 9-2 but being the king of the worst conference in football is hardly impressive.  This team should have lost to Fresno State and you know it.

Hey, root all you want, but Oregon State is going to run all over this team and will stack the box against Oregon the way Utah did because everybody but you and Mario Cristobal understand that Anthony Brown is incapable of beating a defense with his arm.  Lol at beating Utah.....we watched different games.  Good teams don't punt the ball to a dangerous return man with seconds left on the play clock.  You think Cristobal is a great coach, explain that one.

Snee was instructed to punt it out of bounds and did not.  However, Cristobal was stupid to try throwing the ball with 28 seconds left in the half from deep in their own territory.  I agree with you that he is not good on clock management.  I also think he has been stubborn by sticking with Brown.  All these injuries this year but Brown has stayed healthy!!  😀

And that DII pulverized Oregon and its amazing recruits last year.  You must have forgotten that blood bath.  I don't blame you.  Victims of trauma tend to cope by suppressing memories.

You are the worst kind of fan to be honest.  You cry about everything and always expect the worst.  Very glass half empty kind of guy.  When Oregon loses it is always Oregon Sucks!  When they win it is crickets.  Not sure why you even go to games.  Hope you don't lose to much on your bet against your "favorite" team this week!

They don't hit the national headlines anymore, but I'm hoping VT can get a stud coordinator to promote.  The program will either go back to what it was 25 years ago (terrible) or get back to relevant.  And the only way it gets back to relevant is passing over head coaches like Dave Clawson and Jamey Chadwell.  They need someone that can claim they've played games at the highest level.  Really hopeful for a guy coming from a huge program like Tony Elliott or Marcus Freeman.  I think that's the only way you can recruit at a high enough level to be relevant.  Hugh Freeze would have worked well for area recruiting, but he gone ... under new contract which I assume Liberty did because VT wanted him.  Within 2 years Liberty might be the best football program in Virginia (if they aren't already) if VT doesn't make a good hire.  Really bummed we didn't get him.

Well, 1)  Unlike you, I didn't go to Oregon, so I'm not looking at the team through rose colored glasses like you are.

2)  I'm a football fan; more specifically a college football fan.  I enjoy going to 1-2 games per year and have since 2000 when I bought season tickets.  For 20 years, the Ducks have provided far more entertainment than I could have ever hoped for.

3)  I have had PLENTY of homer moments over the years here and when I think Oregon is a top team, I'll say so - and have.  Pretty sure we could dig up some posts proving that.

4)  Just a few weeks ago, I had a very heavy bet on Oregon over Washington.   When I think they'll win, I bet them.  When I think they are in trouble, I'll bet against them.  It's nothing personal, but this is the team I know the best out of any other college program and I've been pretty damn good picking my spots.  I paid for my 2010 Rose Bowl trip by betting Ohio State.  I made a fortune betting Washington State on the ML a few years ago when the Cougs were 17 point dogs.  It's okay to be objective.  Again, I'm not from here, I didn't go to school at Oregon, so it's not in my DNA to be a blind homer like you are.

See you at the game on Saturday?

I think you could do worse than Clawson, who's won everywhere he's been.

Anyway, you're right that they need to recruit better - especially in the Tidewater & Richmond areas. That's where Beamer made a lot of his hay.

Could they possibly go after the younger Beamer?   He's impressed me at S.C.

I always look at Oregon objectively, you just have a tendancy to be negative.  Like I said, I don't know many Oregon fans if any that thought Oregon was one of the top 4 teams in the country last week.  They just had a decent shot to make the playoffs because of their win at Ohio State if they could have shown up at Utah.

Moving on.  Yes, I will be there on Saturday.

Could they possibly go after the younger Beamer?   He's impressed me at S.C.

Maybe.  I think if there was bad blood it would be on Shane's part, because they didn't give him much of a chance when they hired Fuentes.  Not to mention SC is IMO a better gig than VT and he's winning in a tough conference.  I get that he might want to go where he can win the ACC versus being an afterthought in the SEC.

I think Clawson is the most likely, if he's willing to leave WF for an in-conference team.   But I'd prefer someone with SEC, Clemson, ND, type experience even if they've never been a HC.  I think saying you've been those places will help lock down the in-state recruiting and maybe get some 3 stars from elsewhere.  In-state there is no reason to lose a recruiting war.  VT's facilities and football day energy are far better than the others.  I guess the academic football players may choose UVA, but those aren't typically your highest recruits.

Hearing that Luke Fickell is staying at Cincinnati. Recruits being told such.
I actually like this.  IMO, him going to the west coast wasn't going to happen.

He's not actually reporting, obviously, and there are similar statements out there from knowledgeable people that he is definitely heading to USC.  I have read he didn't particularly care for the USC AD when he was at Cincy, so why would he follow him to USC?  Who knows what's true, but this seemed like pertinent info.

Somebody on local radio summed it up best:  That game against Utah was a culmination of a seasons' worth of sins by Oregon manifesting itself in one giant turd of a performance.

I never expected this season to be the breakthrough season for this team - so to that end, they certainly exceeded expectations.  Next year and the year after are the seasons I was circling for a playoff run.  You got the recruits, can you coach them up?  We'll see.....I'm optimistic, despite being negative on the present team.

HMU on Saturday and I'll buy you a brew.

I mean....if he takes Cincy to the playoffs, why leave if he loves the city?

Yeah building good depth but just need a decent QB.  Hopefully next year!

HMU?

Forget winning, how does Michigan keep this game competitive? Serious question - I'm about to be inundated with various groups full of Buckeye fans over the next 50-some hours and I should probably come packing with something more than 'over before it starts.'

Run the ball a ton (and effectively) to keep OSU's offense off the field? Hope Hutchinson can get to Stroud a couple of times?

I don't think the first thing can be done effectively. The second thing, yes - that's paramount. The DL has to get home without blitzing. Force them to dink and dunk their way down the field and hope mistakes by them and/or sacks stall some early drives. Just don't know how to take advantage on offense should those stops happen.

I think Michigans best bet is to just air it out and hope for big plays.  Plodding down the field and having  to pick up multiple 3rd downs on a drive  is going to put them in punting/FG situations more often than not

If OSU is smart they’ll just find some play Harbaugh is too dumb/stubborn to stop and exploit it.  I still have nightmares about that game they just ran crossing route after crossing route and victimized our nickel back.  Or the game Zeke and Barrett just kept faking us out with delayed handoffs (although that may have been pre-Harbaugh, it gets hard to keep the history straight)

also feel like Olawe gonna have some 12/160/3 type of day on us

Same.

Speaking of punting/field goals, don't. It'll take some luck to stop them, so go for it on fourth down. Try to win with the risk of getting blown out even worse.

If they were paying the least bit of attention to that game against MSU, they know the middle of the field and TEs are the key to this game. Go there over and over and over. Keep the OSU offense off the field. And go for it on their side of the 50 and sometimes on your side of the 50

Yea and in a few years they’ll be in the big 12. Once the playoffs expand they’ll have one of the 5 auto spots. If he loves it there may as well stay. Any other place he goes will have the pressure to win immediately or get lost.

I keep getting more convinced that the only job he would consider leaving UC would be if Day decides to bolt to the NFL and tOSU job opens up again otherwise under your scenario above he could probably achieve legendary status at Cincy.

There are a lot of assumptions baked into this post.

3 win Nebraska is favored over Iowa.  Iowa was at one point the #2 ranked team in the country.   This has to be some sort of record of some kind.
