2022-2023 NBA Salary Cap Draft - First Annual Battle for the Wikkid Cup (3 Viewers)

I love this draft format. Draymond Green just got taken in the same round as guys like Bones Hyland, Jalen Smith, Caleb Martin, and John Konchar.

We have probably 3 guys on the board that have a decent chance of being on an All-NBA team. We have 9 or 10 guys that are legit all-star level performers on the board.

Chem X has spent $68 million over 6 picks. Four teams spent more than that on their first two picks alone.
Glad it’s working out well. Thought it would make an interesting shift from the standard drafts.

Well, my pick from Jayrod was taken by Desert Power so I guess we’re waiting for a bit.

I hereby call an early pause of the clock for Friday happy hour.

Please be nice and send lists if you can if you’re going to be away for a while over the weekend. There’s no need to be checking your phones /computers all weekend, but it just sucks if we get frozen the whole weekend.

Thanks!

i’ll be honest, not sure if i am drafting a real life team or a fantasy team here, but taking a bunch of guys i have in uber league. if the average salary is 10mm, i just don’t see enough functional guys to round out 15. i figured it was best to take cheap guys i know and work my way up than vice versa. wa la

Some stats after 6 rounds:
- Round 4 average salary of $8.2M
- Round 5 average salary of $13.6M
- Round 6 average salary of $9.9M

Top 3 salary remaining:
- Chemical X with $81.9M left, $9.1M avg
- Instinctive with $73.6M left, $8.2M avg
- Frosty with $62.6M left, $6.9M avg

Bottom 3 salary remaining:
- Desert Power with $29.4M left, $3.3M avg
- Jayrod with $32.1M left, $3.6M acg
- Juxtatrot with $32.5M left, $3.6M avg

I love this draft. So much more thinking than anything else we've done. Like, I took Sengun and that saved me about $3M versus another guy I was looking at. Is that smart? No idea yet. I have enough money where I could still take a pretty big money guy, but that leaves me with very little left. Do I have enough quality dudes already drafted that I can take that risk? Nobody knows!

The salary aspect has made this wildly successful. I think with the salary component/strategy being brand new to everyone, if we redrafted right now we might see a wildly different draft.

And it’s different from an auction since the $ values are already assigned. Sitting and waiting on guys to fall to you only works if you have the salary space to fit them.

Thanks everyone for doing this, it’s been fun so far.

Thanks for setting it up.

Chaotic Evil mode would have probably been overkill.

I'm golfing in the morning. Can someone after me take a list who will be around? I'll check in around 6:30am CT before I head out.

I've lost hope that there will ever be a decent basketball management sim; something like Football Manager is for soccer or OOTP for bases. Those games were originally developed on a small scale and evolved over decades along with their growing cult of nerds. A hoops sim today would be just a front-end for microtransactions.

The pool of sub $5M players that can play in an eight to nine man rotation in the playoffs is VERY small. Everybody is going to need one or two of them.
I don't think this is accurate
Following up on this less than a round later - everybody has a sub $5M player except you and nysfl2.
Challenge accepted. You in @nysfl2 ?
Just got home, so I haven't really looked yet, but I've got a sub-5 mil guy on my short list, so, sure.

I think his challenge is doing a whole team WITHOUT drafting one

Isaiah Livers, Pistons, $1.5 mil

3 and D guy who is cheap, cheap, cheap. Was hurt most of his rookie year, but has shown that he can play in the NBA.

Well I don't think it is possible with my remaining funds, although maybe it is. I was just commenting that many could have easily gone the route of not having to rely on a sun 5M player being part of an 8 or 9 man rotation.

7.07 - DeMar DeRozan - Chicago - $27.3M

@Yo Mama

I ran the numbers last night and came out just short of clearing a max contract slot. The snipe of Franz Wagner by @Yo Mama really hurt me in this regard. I could still do it but it would mean almost all minimum guys from here until the end.

DeRozan was the guy in the $20-$30M range who fit my roster the best. He's 33 now so I'll try to limit his minutes more than the Bulls do. He can lead the second unit, mentor young players and close out games when we need to get some buckets.

Andrew Wiggins baby. Let's go. Top 10 defender.

@dunfee555
And clearly the best fit remaining. I need a guy who doesn't need the ball, hits pretty well on 3s...but CAN be a one on one creator and showed throughout the playoffs that he can play real big on the boards when we inevitably go small with Embiid on the bench.

Sorry for the delay. Going to grab a cheap guy for the bench now too.

7.11 - Isaiah Stewart, PF, DET

Tough rebounder and defender to come in off the bench and provide energy. Still has some potential to grow as a shooter, but probably a couple years away from that reality.

@dawgtrails is on the clock.

Nice, he was on my short list

Well, that is like the 3rd time you have taken the guy that was on the top of my list. OG, Vassell, and now Stewart. GTFO of my google sheet, will ya :)

7.13 Terance Mann LAC $1,930,681

Underrated bench wing. Hustle player that can hit from deep, but he's best attacking the rim on offense and consistently around the ball. On defense I love his willingness to take on the best players when he's out there. Good/bad that he's on an absolutely stacked roster.

7.14 Onyeka Okongwu- $6,395,160

Elite defender that can rim run while also possessing great touch around the rim. Future stud who might already be a current stud, being held back due to roster construction but dominating in the minutes he's getting, potential for much more.

7.15 Pat Connaughton – G/F - $5,728,393

8.01 Precious Achiuwa– F/C - $2,840,160

A couple more plus-athlete, multi-positional defenders that can hit a jump shot.

Connaughton will certainly be in the rotation as he is something of a jack of all trades, master of none but can play a bit of SG, SF, and PF and capably defend them all. He has also really picked up his shooting – last season he shot 8 threes a game at a 40% clip (only 7 players shot more at a higher clip).

Achiuwa is a bit of a flyer for a rotation spot in this format, especially as I’ll need him to actually hit some threes to really be a part of the rotation. But, he is an elite switch defender that will fit in perfectly on that side of the court. In the last 3 months of the season last year, he averaged 10.7 ppg and 5.6 rpg in only 22.6 minutes and shot over 40% from three on over 3 attempts a game. If he can continue to play the defense he plays while shooting at anything near a 40% clip, he’s perfect for my team.

@scoobus

8.02 Quentin Grimes- $2,277,000

Excellent defender and shot 38% from deep last year on pretty high volume, cheap, looking for a 2nd year leap if he can get his foot healthy.
