2022-2023 NBA Salary Cap Draft - First Annual Battle for the Wikkid Cup (3 Viewers)

12.03 Alex Caruso CHI $9,030,000

You know him by many names (The Carushow, Bald Mamba 👨‍🦲) and you laughed at his head band celebrations, but his game is no joke. The Lakers should have known that first hand, but the Lakers gonna Laker sometimes.

Caruso's one of the best as a true team defender and he constantly disrupts on ball and in passing lanes. His shot is solid, can handle the rock, and he can complement any other type of baller on both sides of the ball. Overall, he's the consomate team player. A must have on any team with "personalities". In an unrelated note, my team also includes Draymond Green.

I eyeballed him several times this draft. He was always just too expensive after my first 6 picks.

Thought it was a really big mistake for the Lakers to let him go. He was a great fit for Lebron.

Austin Reaves has filled his role seamlessly, in my incredibly unbiased opinion.

@Instinctive
Looked at him for a couple of rounds, but I don't think Thibs likes him for some reason. I feel like he should get more minutes than he does.
He’s been playing well - I think he’ll get his minutes.
I watched him go bananas and score 22 off the bench in the opener against Memphis and helped to force OT. Since then he hasn't scored more than 7 pts in a game.
He's near the end of bench rotation - but think he has more upside than some of the players going in this range.

I thought he'd go a LOT earlier. Seems like a great guy to plug into a starting lineup next to a couple of guys who can handle the scoring side of things.

If Kleber wasn't picked right before I was picking at my previous turn, I was likely going Kleber-Caruso.

I considered him at many points, and ultimately didn't take him because the voting in the last NBA draft really didn't seem to like him. That said...in the role Jake has him in, I bet it works out better, with Jokic as his hub instead of Durant.

@Instinctive takes Walker Kessler from Utah for $2,696,400
@Instinctive I think it’s going to be tough for you to fit this in. That leaves you with 3 players averaging $1,609,838. There are only 17 players left making less than that and only 4 left low enough that would allow you to spend more than $1.6M.
I have my list and looked at cap space remaining. I should get a bottom dweller coming back to me and then even if the turn behind me takes a ton again I'll be able to fit in.

If not then I guess I have to ask for someone's mercy and trade Kessler for a cheapo. Oh well.

A safe assumption for people to make is to leave at least $1.8M per player, maybe closer to $1.9M at this point. Anything lower than that will be a big risk.

But you’re going to need 3 of those. Not sure if there will be enough.

I may be interested. Will see how things go after this turn.

I was hoping one of Caruso and this guy would make it back to me. I’ve got lots of scoring in my main rotation but could use another perimeter defender who can guard multiple positions and hit the 3.

Yo Mama selects:

12.08 - Royce O’Neal, SG/SF LOLNets - $9,200,000

He’s been really good this year overall despite a few off shooting nights. He’s already playing a ton, but I’m assuming he’s going to be used even more with new coach Udoka.

And one of those is Eric Bledsoe who really shouldn't be available to draft as that is his waived and stretched number over three years. If he were to end up on a real NBA team, he would be at the vets minimum of nearly $3M.

I think it'll be close unless he grabs one of the three micro salaries available next pick, which is 18 picks away and he's not the only one playing the salary game - Moops, Scoobus, and me are all needing to find some cheap players somewhere and we all pick twice before Instinctive picks again. Moops especially has to chase the sub $1.6M salaries because he only has $1.8M/player left.

Yeah I just noticed Bledsoe too.

Should we take him off the list?

I think we should. He's not currently in the league, with his recent legal troubles, he's not likely to be in the NBA this year, and if he does get signed, that salary isn't legal.

On the other hand, I think we should leave Andrew Nicholson at his $2.8M salary because I think it's hilarious that a guy that hasn't been in the NBA is a half decade is still costing the Trailblazers money for 2 more seasons.

12.09 - Shaedon Sharpe - Wing - Blazers ($6M)

One final swing for the fences

Like all rookies, he has a wide range of potential outcomes but Sharpe's are probably wider than most on either end of the spectrum.

Jake LaRavia, PF, Memphis - $3 mil

Can't claim to know a lot about him, but a power forward who is hitting 60% of his 3s on non-trivial volume this year seems to be worth taking a shot on. He even appears to not be bad defensively.

Another positive with the cap is that normally at this point in the draft it would be nothing but slugs being picked, but now I'm genuinely interested in what some teams do with their remaining space.

They probably will be dicks and grab the cheap guys
