2022-23 NBA Thread: “you’ll never let me down like the Heat did”, Miami fan says to giant pile of cocaine (2 Viewers)

I'm avoiding all Poole-shot talk, but I have to note that Dame's game winner was with a tie game, so worst case scenario was OT.

Well, I do think it's an upgrade to move on from a missed shot in game one of a seven game series to a shot that was made 12 years ago.
OMG that was 12 years ago. JFC.
I think he is talking about the one against OkC in 2019, not Houston.
That just FEELS like 12 years ago. ;)

Pretty sure there wouldn't be nearly as much criticizing the NBA Poole shot a) if there was only 0.9 seconds left (and not 11 secs) and/or b) he was where he should have been on the floor (as Coach Kerr himself pointed out).

Did Kerr say anything about calling a timeout perhaps (and he actually had one this time!)?

He wasn't asked the question in the interviews I saw, unfortunately.
He did address it in the post game presser: I couldn’t find a clip of just that question—but if you click the link below and go to the 3 minute and 25 second mark—he does answer it. He said he purposely didn’t call the timeout when he saw that Steph got doubled because he knew that meant that somebody would be wide open.

The discussion about late game shot selection reminded me of when my son used to play. He loved Kobe and practiced shooting fadeaway jump shots over and over again. Since he was tall (he ended up almost 6'6"), he was generally considered an interior player and not an outside shooter. His AAU coach was not a fan of him taking outside shots in practice (even on his own time), and he told him he better not take shots like that in games, or he would find himself watching from the bench. (His logic was they had tons of outside shooting guards and not many tall kids, so they needed him under the basket.)

They made it to the finals of their next tournament, and they had to inbound the ball on the offensive end under the basket, down by 2 points with 1.8 seconds in the game. They called timeout and drew up a play for him to come off a double screen and cut down the lane and catch a lob for what should have been an easy lay in to go to OT. He was specifically told not to ad lib and try a crazy fadeaway three to win the game. The play did not go off as designed, as the in bounder threw the ball in way too early and just as he came around the screen behind the 3-point line (the pass was supposed to go to him AFTER he came down the lane and right in front of the basket, not at the top of the key at the 3-point line).

The pass was high and wide, and he wasn't expecting it then. Instead of cutting down the lane, he had to go after the pass which ended up well behind the three-point line and carried his momentum toward the sideline. By the time he gathered in the pass and took a step toward the sideline, there was no time left . . . so he threw up a fall away, turnaround 3-point attempt at the buzzer off the wrong foot that fell in for the win. His teammates went crazy and mobbed him. The parents went crazy and mobbed him. The refs and coaches from the other team tipped their hat for draining a really tough shot. But his head coach? Not impressed. He got in a shouting match with our son after the game still on the court . . . and he got benched the next game for doing the complete opposite of what the coach told him to do. To everyone else, it was clear he didn't have any other options, and the coach insisted he did it all intentionally. (Postscript, we ended up moving him to a different AAU team.)

AAU is about player development. HS or college ball, I could see taking a harder stance as the priority is more about submitting to a team-first philosophy and working together to win games. Still, the coach sounds like a real peach.

After careful consideration and much pressure from external sources, I will relent my previous stance and chime in on the Jordan Poole game-tying attempt and subsequent loss for the Warriors.

It was a hero ball shot and with2 TO's and over 10 seconds left, it would have been much wiser to drive in from that spot than fire away at that depth. Sure he makes it he is the hero, but it was not a smart play. There were a lot of more high % options available, but that is kind of the Warriors style to let it fly more often than not, so I don't blame him for taking the shot. It was better than dribbling around and then throwing an outlet to the other team as the shot clock goes off ala-Malcom Brogdon in game 1 of BOS/PHI.

AD the reason Lakers won't win another ring in the LeBron era.

Man was able to ride the coattails of the last year of peak-ish LeBron in the bubble. Now their roles have reversed and AD's just not up to the task.

Solid take.

AD was one of the best players in the bubble and has been one of the best all around players in this year’s playoffs too.
AD playoffs

2020 - 28p / 11r / 4a with 1stl and 1 blk on 57% shooting

This year - 22p / 15r / 2a with 1stl and 4 blk on 50% shooting, while dominating on defense.

Coattails

You just knew the Lakers would suck tonight and mail it in, especially AD. Glad I put money on him scoring less than 25.
Mail it in seems a bit harsh, but yeah, they pushed their two superstars to their limit to win game 1. I don't think it's a huge shock the Warriors won Game 2.

I mean, I think after Game 1 the Lakers were perfectly fine losing tonight. I know that mentality rankles some people, but isn't winning teh series more important than winning Game 2?
This.

I think the lakers being able to rest and game plan played a big part of game 1, especially with the warriors coming off of an intense 7 game series with sac.

It was a lot to ask to have ad repeat his minutes/performance (was less effective offensively in the second half of game 1).

great game by the warriors last night i hope shrooder gets fined and a suspension today going at a guys knees is lower than low even if you have a skunk hair take that to the bank brohans

When I watched that play last night I shook my head and thought "Draymond is going to get suspended again because he set a screen and then stuck his leg out and tried to trip Schroeder".

Which is exactly why Dennis did what he did.

it looked like one of those moves in roller derby where when you're rounding a corner, you pull another player to use as leverage to whip around and take the lead.

Draymond absolutely exaggerated the contact. correctly, smart move on his part, but he knows when to play up contact for a foul and he used it there.

No issues with the Lakers somewhat mailing it in last night. This was my point as well when I suggested that Philly sits both Harden and Embiid for game two.

Schroder's play was dirty but Green wasn't entirely upright and I'm sure that was by design by Green as he never, ever deserves the benefit of the doubt in any of these situations. And you can take that to JP Morgan Chase and Co.
