2024 Carolina Panthers: Owner Hires the Next Panthers Future Ex-Coach (2 Viewers)

Browns paying $10.5 of his $18M contract for 2022.

We'll see...
Panthers acquired QB Baker Mayfield from the Browns in exchange for a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick.

Additionally, Mayfield has agreed to a $3.5 million pay cut in the final year of his deal this upcoming season, while the Browns will absorb $10.5 million and the Panthers around $5 million.

Didn’t the Panthers trade a 3rd to move up for Corral?

Not a bad deal for the Panthers at all.  $5m for a decent NFL QB is a good deal these days.

Good article on the Ringer about Baker's past success and looking at the fit with Carolina.

And though the team’s win total got a one-game bump and its playoff odds saw a slight improvement, both numbers are down from where they were at this same point last summer. That’s fitting. While it may feel like the Panthers got better today, a look at the larger picture makes it clear this team is still headed in the wrong direction.

Another good article that touches on the other implications- Baker/CMC and the Browns

I'm willing to give Baker the benefit of the doubt insofar as is shoulder being a much bigger issue for compromising his production last year.  He deserves credit for gutting it out.

But he's going to a worse situation, no?

- Chubb/Hunt vs. CMC? Push...
- CLE OL vs Panthers OL?  Big advantage CLE
- DJ Moore might be the best WR he's played with, but watching OBJ become a significant factor in LA in a short period of time didn't help the perception that having bonafide big time targets helps his ability to play better.

...and there is no hotter seat in the NFL than Rhule's.  So IMO Baker would have to be better than he's ever shown himself to be to have a future beyond 1 year in CAR.

Reports surfacing that the Panthers - Patriots joint practice resulted in a few fights yesterday and today.... including injured fans.
Apparently it started up again today when CMC was hit hard and spiked the ball in front of the NEP players and the groups went at it...
No video or link... saw it in a NFL App alert.

Joint practices with NE is stupid.

WTF...did I miss the news that Walker has won the starting QB position? How they are handling Mayfield/Darnold is criminal.

NFL world reacts to Panthers’ strange quarterback decision

...We see many teams protect their starters from much play in the preseason due to injury concerns ...

Also known as Baker Mayfield is our starter and we want to keep Sam Darnold healthy so we can trade him

P.J. Walker is expected to start at quarterback for the Panthers in their second preseason game vs. the Patriots, per sources. Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold are still in a QB battle for the 1 spot and Panthers playing mostly 2s and 3s tonight. So, neither gets the start.

Who do they think is trading for Sam Darnold - even if Carolina eats some of the salary?

Starting Walker is baffling. We have 2 guys trying to win the QB job and neither of them gets any playing time in a preseason game. Brilliant move. Hopefully the one thing that this game revealed is that PJ Walker is not going to be the answer at QB for... anyone. Maybe the USFL.

Rhule does love his Temple and Baylor players though... just loves them. Bizarre.

I feel bad for Corral and hope he gets healthy for next season.

Baker looked good Friday night. Chuba dropped a few balls he should have caught, but they looked decent out there. Feel bad for Darnold but hopefully he'll be back soon.

Nervous with just PJ Walker as backup. Do they bring in Cam as backup? Need a kicker too.

BS roughing the passer call didn't help. Defense can't stop the run.

Way too conservative last offensive series before the FG. Three handoffs, FG. Took no time off the clock. One first down ends the game. Run CMC up the middle, fine... but the 3rd time how bout a bootleg and get Baker out on the edge, release a TE in the flats and have Baker either run for the 1st or throw for the 1st. Then run the clock down and kick the FG.

Iggy got schooled a couple of times by Myles G. Hopefully he's learning. But overall, not too bad. Baker had a slow start but they looked decent in the 2nd half.

That BS RTP call and the non-call on Delay of Game on "spike" delay gave the Ref's the Win. It would have resulted in a 10 sec run-off and no FG attempt.

Baker Mayfield left Cleveland and was shipped to Carolina with a worse QB left to start while Watson is suspended...

-Baker loses the football game vs Jacoby Brissett on a team that abandoned him and said he was no good after investing the No 1 pick into him and watching him do Progressive Commercials for 4 years...and he still could not will his team to victory Week 1 at home in front of a Win-Thirsty crowd in Carolina.

it's time to see what offers you can get in the studios. You aren't going anywhere as an NFL QB and you aren't likely to receive more than 1 yr-back up money offers in 2023 and beyond. Much safer to hang out indoors in studios in the AC drinking coffee and eating bear claws on Sunday Morning, it's a good gig and guaranteed to pay him a few million per year. Maybe even go back to college football on the Saturday morning shows where they would revere him.

Really like Matt Rhule and don't blame him for an owner offering him stupid money to be an NFL head coach but he's in over his head. He'll be back in college next year taking a mid level school back from the brink and making them top 25 relevant.

Rhule may be in Nebraska sometime soon.
That's probably pretty accurate. Program with a lot of prestigious history that's fallen on hard times. They're in the Big 10 West so it'd be easy to get back to some prominence by beating Wisconsin and Iowa. Rhule runs a style that's hard nosed and perfect for college. Just doesn't translate to the NFL.

I see the tradition of not showing up to the game on time is still firmly in tact.
Hard to imagine there could be less enthusiasm towards the Panthers locally right now. Tepper is really doing a terrible job.
First game ive gotten to see here in FL. Like the D....offense is all kinds of jacked up. Coach is in over his head.
Front office does get credit for how they have invested in the D

Another week, another injury report that includes CMC. Probably wouldn't be many takers at his salary, but it would be nice if they could trade him for a player and/or a couple of draft picks.

Seems like Buffalo could use him. Josh Allen is going to age quickly if they keep having him throw 40+ passes and 10 called runs a game (in addition to scramble runs). With that offense and that QB, CMC would elevate them perhaps to the top of the NFL list.

Buffalo is in win now mode. They could use a stud RB who can take more of the load off Josh Allen. If the Panthers could get a couple of picks (1st or a 2nd and 3rd), it might be in their best interest to pursue at this point.

Add draft capital, new coaching staff, off-load bloated salary... or maybe just a pipe dream.

It's funny you say that. I was just having the discussion that Buffalo needs to get a RB but I was thinking Hunt (he is expendable). CMC would be even better.

Panthers are last in the league in time of possession. I saw where the Panthers are 1-26 under Matt Rhule when the opponent scores at least 17 points... 24 losses in a row. Offense stinks.

Will Rhule make it through the whole season? Replace Baker Mayfield? Ok, with who, with what?

Time to start over. Starts with coaching imo. Need an NFL coach.

Mayfield wasn't feeling up to driving to dinner last night but as he tossed his keys to his wife they were batted down by their Basset hound, making it 8 batted pass attempts on the day.

Made a comment yesterday that the Falcons under Arthur Smith always seem to play hard. He gets more out of that team than the talent on the roster. Rhule's Panthers are the opposite of that. They have a lot more talent than their level of play. The defense has looked really good at times, but they cannot hold off teams forever. I know that all of the QBs have question marks, but the playcalling is abysmal.

1-3 against a slate of 4 very beatable teams and the scehdule doesn't get easier. Each morning I check Twitter hoping to see this coach is fired.

And maybe he'll take McAdoo with him.

Gone.

Baker is a skill position killer so won't matter a bit if he's still the QB. Darnold seems a lot more up and down.....but at least there's some ups as opposed to Baker being forever meh to terrible

Imagine if Seattle went Baker instead of this beautiful wonderful awesome stupendous display by Geno.

Let Geno Cook
