2022 Las Vegas Raiders (4 Viewers)

There are also a couple of vet Olinemen still available that have experience playing multiple positions. I think bringing in another guy that can play G and T would be smart. Go into camp and them compete. Mix and match to best starting 5 for LG, RG and RT (LT and C being not questions). Those who don't make it are good depth as backups.

Jayon Brown signing isn't getting the love it deserves.  This is a guy that can play, and he's strong in coverage.  This is a great signing.

I really like Demarcus Robinson numbers

$103,500 signing bonus

$1.035 salary with $325k guaranteed. I think he is worth a little more than that so value signing.

Ziegler says he wanted to sign Oline but the market went a different direction which translated to me they were getting offers out there but other teams were willing to pay more so we went to option B and resigned some of our guys hoping the coaching staff can coach them up to higher productivity.

The one offensive lineman that signed for very reasonable money that I wish they signed was Morgan Moses.  Ravens signed him for 3 years $15M.

McDaniels interview:

(my thoughts in bold)

• On how Ferrell, a defensive end selected by the previous regime with the No. 4 pick in the draft, will fit in:

“I think everybody, for us, it’s going to be a clean slate,” McDaniels said. “I am really not as interested in what they’ve done as much as what we can do moving forward. He’ll earn his role. Whatever the role is going to be, he’ll earn it. We might have some things we ask him to do that he hasn’t done as much of — but that might fit him better.”--interior rusher, what else could it be?

• McDaniels said earlier Monday that he had a couple of running backs rehabilitating from injuries. Kenyan Drake was known after he suffered a broken ankle in December. Did Josh Jacobs have offseason surgery?

“We have a couple of guys that are rehabbing some stuff,” McDaniels said, followed by a pause and then laughter.

• Besides Adams, acquired from the Packers for first- and second-round picks, the Raiders added free-agent receivers Mack Hollins and Demarcus Robinson. What do they bring to the mix?

“First of all, both of them are big (6-foot-4 and 6-1, respectively),” he said. “They have very good size and are very competitive. They were productive in their own roles.

“Mack certainly factored significantly in the kicking game. I mean, significantly. This guy is a really good kicking game player that also can play on offense. If you can get guys like that, I don’t care what position they play. If they’re good enough in the kicking game to be a factor, they’ll be at the game every week. And now you can use them on offense or defense.

“Demarcus has been productive in a good offense. He is a guy that has played off of others. He moves spots around, they both change positions, and they have both been factors at times in the red zone. We’re going to try and improve that area of our team, we know that. On both sides of the ball.”--McD haas a plan for Robinson, I'm looking forward to seeing this

• Marcus Mariota, the Raiders’ backup quarterback the past two seasons, signed with the Falcons. Thus far, the Raiders have brought in only Garrett Gilbert, a journeyman backup with two career starts and 74 career pass attempts. Gilbert started last season on the Patriots practice squad being coached by McDaniels before being signed by Washington when they lost two quarterbacks to the reserve/COVID-19 list; he started four days later for them in a 27-17 loss. Gilbert also spent the 2015 season on the Raiders practice squad and rejoined the team late in the 2016 season before their playoff game when backup Matt McGloin — who started the regular-season finale in place of an injured Derek Carr — got hurt.

So, with Carr and Gilbert as the only quarterbacks on the roster so far, what’s the plan at backup quarterback and does McDaniels value experience at that spot? (The Raiders had brought in Trevor Siemian for a visit, but he signed with the Bears.)

“We’ve had some (in New England) that have been rookies and some that have not,” McDaniels said. “At the end of the day, what we want to do is probably get into a cycle where we find people that we bring in and can train and develop. That’s a great thing for a quarterback, to have time in a system, continued development year after year; not bring them in for one year and they sit there and know we gotta do it again. That’s a pain in the butt sometimes.

“At this point, with where we’re at, we’re going to have to do something. There are a lot of things we have to look at going forward and what’s the best thing for us — short-term window or long-term window of developing a guy. I always think that’s best for a quarterback’s overall development — that he’s in the same system, coached by the same coaches, hears the same terminology and then in Year 2 and Year 3 he is the best version of himself that he could be. As opposed to a guy that is here for eight months. But we’ll see how the rest of this year unfolds. We’re on the hunt.”

• The Raiders have largely held the status quo on the offensive line, re-signing tackle Brandon Parker and guard/tackle Jermaine Eluemunor and indicating that 2021 first-round pick Alex Leatherwood will compete for a role somewhere on the line after he was drafted to play right tackle and was moved to right guard early in his rookie season. How does McDaniels see the competition?

“You will see a lot of people play at right tackle (at training camp and the preseason), you will see a lot of people play at right guard,” he said. “We’re going to move through the group because you never know what’s going to happen through the course of a game, and the other thing we don’t want to do is pigeonhole ourselves and act like these guys will only play beside each other. We don’t know that.

“Most of the time in an NFL season, there are eight, 10 combinations of guys that are out there playing. If you never put them in those positions to play by each other or practice with one another, then the communication that it takes to play well … it’s just impossible. … So, there is going to be a lot of movement in there and we’re going to give everyone a chance to compete. That’s the way we’re going to find the best five.” BOLD strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off for them.

• After the Adams trade, the Raiders don’t have a pick in next month’s draft until the third round at No. 86. How strange is that?

“Yeah, it’s going to be a little … I will say this, you never know about that,” McDaniels said. “There are a lot of conversations being had here at The Breakers. You never know where you could end up.

“We’re going to try and make every pick count, regardless of what round it is. And we also know that we’re going to be fairly active once the draft is over. We only have 60-some guys on the roster. So between now and right after the draft, there are going to be 20-some players added to our team.” Might still be intersting FA moves after the draft.

• The Raiders made additions at linebacker by signing Micah Kiser, Kyler Fackrell and Jayon Brown. Fackrell had a 10 1/2-sack season for the Packers in 2018 and has played in 86 games (with 19 starts) over six seasons. Brown made 39 starts out of his 66 games played in his five seasons with the Titans. Kiser began last season with the Rams before being signed off their practice squad by Denver, where he made two starts and played in 10 games. McDaniels likes the boost to the team’s depth. Big Jayon Brown fan, for that price

“I feel better about it now,” he said. “I am obviously excited about Denzel (Perryman) and Divine (Deablo) — those guys did a lot of good things last year — and I like the guys we added. Fackrell is a different guy. He is not really an inside linebacker but he gives us some depth on the edge. We’ll figure out how exactly to use them all, but I feel a lot better than I did a couple weeks ago.”

• As far as Malcolm Koonce, the 2021 third-round pick at defensive end who had a pair of sacks when given some late-season playing time, McDaniels was noncommittal about whether he’ll play outside linebacker or defensive end in what’s expected to primarily be a 3-4 defense under coordinator Patrick Graham.

“He is a … he’ll be, he’ll be, um, we’re going to work with him in a lot of different areas,” McDaniels said with a laugh. “He is a talented guy. I am excited about him.” Koonce and Fackerall are the backup pass Edge guys, IMO

• The Raiders’ big addition in the secondary thus far has been cornerback Rock Ya-Sin, acquired from the Colts in the Yannick Ngakoue trade. He’ll start, likely alongside 2019 third-round pick Trayvon Mullen. The Raiders also signed free agent Anthony Averett. How does McDaniels like Mullen and the group of cornerbacks?

“I like Trayvon,” he said. “I saw him the other day at the facility. I am excited. It’s a young group. They’re all talented, they all have different strengths and weaknesses. I think they’re all going to be eager to compete, and we’re going to let that happen and see how it all shakes out. I am really excited about that group.

“You look at that group and then the receiver group — ‘Make each other better. Go compete. Go guard Hunter (Renfrow) and Davante and Demarcus and Mack.’ They have to cover different kinds of guys, and the receivers have to get open against different skill sets at corner. They have to make each other better.

“Go fight for a spot.”

You know the thing that stands out for me so far is how McDaniels handles the football questions.  I get the sense that he has a true in-depth valuable understanding of the game, what he wants to do, and how to implement it.   Not saying that Gruden didn't have that, but it was not evident in any media interactions.   Gruden was more about the canned responses.

I think Gruden was innovative when he was young. Then he became TV guy, and lost his edge.

I also think bringing in a young GM with him like Ziegler was huge upgrade as well. Look around the league and you'll see a trend of young up-and-comers who have been groomed under old school GMs. There's a huge shift currently happening in NFL front offices and for once it's nice to see the Raiders at the forefront again.

Mayock was a good college evaluator but it was clear he was in over his head in other aspects of his job, especially after Gruden resigned. The fact that no other teams were beating down his door to hire him after he was let go says a lot in my mind.

You gotta hand it to Ziegler for bringing in Jones, Adams, Ya-Sin and Brown among others. I'm not so sure Mayock would have been able to broker those deals.

To be fair, Gruden was left mid season and we never got to see what Mayock could do as the decision maker during free agency and the draft.  I like what the new regime has done, but I don't think we can really grade Mayock fairly given the circumstances.

You'll probably enjoy this interview with Ziegler

Fair, I like Mayock. I just don't think he had enough FO experience to do the job well.

I don't pretend to know how NFL FOs work or what owners look for exactly when hiring a GM. I just have a hunch that people who pay their dues and rise up the ranks of NFL FOs like Ziegler, Poles, Berry, Adofo-Mensah, Beane and Roseman, have a jump on networking with each other and a mutual respect as well. A guy coming from the TV world, like Mayock wouldn't have those experiences with his peers. I think it was a huge disadvantage for him when it came to communication, working deals and possibly a certain respect from other GMs.

I don’t miss Mayock and his poor drafting.  LV has upgraded their staff and the last month is all the proof you need.   Gruden would have traded away Maxx and traded a 3rd round draft pick for the most troubled WR on the Steelers roster.   The future is bright.

Gruden and Mayock put together the roster that made the playoffs last year.  I'm not saying they did the best job, but it's ridiculous how they are portrayed in this thread sometimes.

Gruden deserves every split y banana clowning he gets.  Mayock signed up for a no win situation. He was gruden’s ##### from the get go.  And I really like mayock.

I give the players credit for last years success. Not management. I was at 2 games last year, both coached by Gruden.  Bal and sd.  Both games were poorly executed.

Gruden was, is, and always will be a huge mistake the 2nd time around.  ESPECIALLY at 100,000,000 MILLION dollars.

today.  Right now. I am more proud to be a raider fan, than I have been in 20ish years.  Minus a few glimmers of hope here and there.

Gruden's second tenure had some serious issues.  His early draft picks should have been better and he made bad choices at defensive coordinator and did not fix the defense.

He could still coach offense, knew how to put an offensive game plan together and he helped Carr become a better QB.

His second stint can obviously not be called a success, but he's also not the inept, bumbling idiot he's made out to be by some people either.

The Raider job was viewed as a very attractive opening this offseason by many people.  Part of the reason for that was that the last regime left some very good pieces on the roster to work with and their cap situation was pretty good.

Ok.  We need the Raiders to make another move here... too long of a stretch since the move to read up on!
It will be quiet until the cap room is freed up with the cut players designated after June 1st happens. Until then, I wouldn't expect any noteworthy moves. When that cash gets freed up then I would bet they hit up some of the bets that are waiting now.

My hopes are Gilmore and Hicks in that order as additions.

Gruden, Mayock and Ruggs have been beat to death, stomped on, picked up and put through a meat grinder, then set on fire with the ashes spread in the middle of the pacific. They are no longer on the team. We have discussed, debated, fought, contemplated, rehashed, imagined, dissected, battered through data and given our opinions on all three. Is there really anything more that can be said on any of them now that hasn't been said over and over to the factor of ten? Yes, we know, some people have had burning hate for them from the get go varied through shades of gray towards people who thought they were good. No one is going to change their minds on where they are on it and it no longer matters one way or another. Everyone who frequents this thread knows everyone elses position. It is like Will Smith/Chris Rock memes for the last few days... no matter how good it may be, at this point, none of it is good. They are gone. History is written. Nothing will change and unless there is new info on a lawsuit or legal battle or someone gets a new job elsewhere, there really isn't more to say about any of them relevant to the Raiders.

I agree entirely. And if we finally get rid of Carr, everything will be perfect.

(you know there's a winky face here, right?)

Never forget 3 wrs in the 1st four picks….never forget.  😂😂😂

Being April Fool's Day, I had to double check but it appears they've also brought in Nic Mullens to battle for the #2 QB job.

He was the 9ers QB for one of the more embarrassing Raiders losses in recent memory in 2018.

In before the Mullens is better than Carr crowd show up!  (I kid! I kid!)

Raiders also re-signed DT Johnathan Hankins today.   He gets to play for his old position coach, Graham, again.

Edited to add: I see Bruno2 beat me to the punch here with the Hankins news...

The sheen may have really dulled off of the Chefs. They brought in Arden Key for a visit and he went off and signed with the Jags. Now, not to say Arden Key is the kind of guy who would take a few less bucks to win since he does strike me as the mercenary type but in the last couple of years, I think the KC pull was stronger. They are no longer the favorite of the division, let along the AFC. Vets coming cheap for that higher chance of a SB win is likely over for them.

Gerald McCoy replied on Twitter when asked about his future by a Raider fan "I'm still here. Trust me. I ain't going nowhere"

Pretty strong statement. Does that mean there is mutual interest or hom stating he wants to resign?

Clearly with his age and missing back to back seasons from injury, he is not the player he once was and I don't even know if he has anything in the tank left. I was really looking forward to him in rotation with our other DT's last season but one thing that can not be taken away from him is his veteran leadership.

There is coaching staff connection as our DL was on staff with him in TB. I don't know if they do a vet min heavy incentive deal to kick the ole' tires but I wouldn't be opposed to that and see if the old beast still has some left in him to contribute beyond the locker room.

I wonder if his answer means they have a handshake deal in place for post June 1st.

mean... the confidence of the post seems to suggest something like that but his last contract was "1 year, $1,250,000 contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, including a $150,000 signing bonus, $150,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $1,250,000." We have to have at least 1.2 in cap space if that was what we were doing... no?

I don’t follow the cap stuff at but I thought folks were discussing us having cap space after the June 1st cuts. I assume we’d be able to squeeze in 1.25mill for a DT after that point.
what do I know. Just making conversation on a slow Sunday night :)

Yea, we get nearly $20 million free after June 1st.

It could also be that it just isn't a priority and if there us ANY guaranteed money in the deal, why do it now on a vet that you may cut while there may be other opportunities to come up in the meantime.

I wrote him off coming back until seeing that quote.

Rumor Mill

Raiders interested in WR Brandin Cooks as the # 2
Cooks is scheduled to earn $12.5 mil this season with the Texans. Maybe Devante Parker set the market at a 3rd round pick but even if the Raiders were willing to give that up for Cooks I can't imagine they would want him at that price.

Still, it would make the offense potentially devastating.

I’d rather that money be spent elsewhere. On a younger, healthier player.  D or Oline or LB
