2023-24 NBA Thread: thread title guy has a new baby and hasn’t slept in two weeks so snarkiness has to wait (2 Viewers)

The NBA is defining a star player as someone who's made the All-Star or All-NBA teams in any of the three previous seasons, sources said.

The NBA will incorporate a fine system for teams that begins with $100,000 for first offenses, $250,000 for second offenses and $1 million more than the previous penalty for each additional fine, sources said.

A league memo obtained by ESPN on the changes describe these areas of the new policy. Enforcement of these policies will be based on league office investigations, which will include independent medical reviews, sources said.

  • Teams must manage their roster to ensure that no more than one star player is unavailable for the same game.
  • Teams must insure that star players are available for national television and in-season tournament games.
  • Teams must maintain a balance between the number of one-game absences for a star player in home games and road games -- with a preference for those absences to happen in home games.
  • Teams must refrain from any long-term shutdown -- or near shutdown -- when a star player stops participating in games or plays in a materially reduced role in circumstances affecting the integrity of the game.
  • Teams must insure that healthy players resting for a game are present and visible to fans.
The NBA will provide several scenarios for excused absences on missed games -- including those involving regular-season back-to-back scenarios, sources said. For example, the NBA will allow pre-approved designated back-to-back allowances for players who are 35 years old on opening night or have career workloads of 34,000 regular-season minutes or 1,000 regular season/playoff games combined, sources said.
Sounds like a "you still have to show up for work" type policy.

I get it as this is a fan driven league and the best players not playing is going to start hurting attendance.

So dumb. Teams will either pay the fines or come up with clever reasons to avoid the fines. Here is an example. Today is LeBron's scheduled day off and during the morning shoot around Anthony Davis tweeked his knee or his back stiffened up and he is being held out for precautionary reasons.

Tone deaf is one way to describe this photo. Which fans are more offended. Philly Sports Fans, #Eagles fans, or #Sixers fans. Can’t figure who is more asinine. Owner of #Commanders and #76ers Josh Harris for asking Sixers Joel Embiid to appear at Commanders home opener as ambassador for a rival Philly team or Embiid for agreeing to do it. A Sixer is insulting to his biggest fan base when supporting a rival of Eagles. Does anybody in Philadelphia even respect or like Josh Harris? Clearly #Tonedeaf.

Sounds like he choked his girlfriend and broke a bone somewhere on her body. I suspect this comes as no surprise to the Rockets.
Three years and over $47 million on that contract. Ouch.
Every season is non-guaranteed, so they can cut bait after this season for nothing. The whole reason that contract was written that way is because they knew he was a POS that was eventually going to get himself in real trouble.

But why would the Commanders' fans care/want Embiid there too? Josh Harris is an upgrade over Snyder, but he hasn't been a great owner for the 76ers, and I agree that this is tone deaf. Embiid probably thought it was cool to meet Magic, but he normally is pretty understanding of Philly sports overall. Not a great look.

click bait nonsense from one of the original trolls in Eskin. Please give me the list of acceptable sporting events for Embiid to attend and I will make sure to get it to the sixers.

If he was just attending, that is fine. It is the "ambassador" reference that seems off to me.

Been right on everything since day 1 of the Harris group takeover though.

what does it even mean that he was the ambassador? where is it described what that actually entails?

It was a good run, Kevin Porter Jr.

Sounds like he choked his girlfriend and broke a bone somewhere on her body. I suspect this comes as no surprise to the Rockets.

Jesus. Fractured her vertebrae? His girlfriend is WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick, whose sister was married to Dwayne Haskins. Ms. Haskins had some words for Kevin...

“@kevinporterjr if you think you gone touch my sister & not get touched,” Kalabrya wrote, per the outlet. “Count ya f—ing days. Better hope and pray you’ll be able to ever walk again let alone dribble.

“You may have gotten away with this s–t in the past cause yo mama ain’t beat ya a–, but we spank lil punk a– painting nail sissy b—-es like you everyday. Don’t show up to that crib. We gone do it to you. Lil b—h.”

Kev knows his stuff. Saved me the trouble. Honestly, I'm not going to miss him. Seemed like overkill with their current roster.

that's wild. she is also the god-daughter of John Lucas, who is or was a Rockets assistant usually involved in working with the guys who are the most troubled off the court...

No woman deserves this, but why is she with him exactly? According to this report:
In November 2020, when Porter was involved in a single-car crash while with the Cavaliers, police arrested him on handgun, vehicular and marijuana charges, which were later dropped. He was sidelined for the start of that season with reported personal issues, then traded away from Cleveland midway through the season after he reportedly engaged in a screaming match with Cavaliers officials following a change to his locker location.
The NBA fined Porter in April 2021 for violating league covid-19 protocols by entering a Miami nightlife establishment. In January 2022, the Rockets suspended Porter after he reportedly left an arena midgame following a halftime confrontation with the coaching staff. Porter was also suspended during his one season at Southern California for what the school described as a “conduct issue.”
I just get a little tired of hearing about women being attracted to men with the "bad boy" image and then being mistreated because he actually is a bad person.
has there been reporting that she knew he was a "bad boy" and that she is attracted to men who are "bad boys" and/or that she ever had anything like this happen to her before?

There are a number of reasons why people stay in abusive relationships and why they even refuse to press charges or testify against their abusers.

I know this is not your intent, but you need to see this argument is getting dangerously close to victim blaming / “she asked for it” reasons for why victims decide not to report their abuse.

Again, I’m not saying that you’re saying this, but you should understand this can be a very complex situation.

I'm very torn on this issue. On one hand, since this is the only scenario that would ever personally apply to me, if some dad budgets properly to get his kid tickets to see Lebron for Christmas because Lebron is his very player and one game per year is truly what this working class dad can afford, then it's a total bummer when Lebron is in street clothes laughing with Anthony Davis on the bench while JR Smith launches up bad threes or whatever. But, on the other hand, it seems entirely reasonable to me for team management to sit their star players to ensure they're rested for the playoffs as doing so is probably the best strategy for winning a title - which is certainly the pinnacle goal.

Agreed. Or illnesses become more prevalent. Either way, I don't see how this gets enforced very easily. I could totally see somebody like a Popovich just making sure every player on the roster is on an injury report just in case ala Belichik.

I’m not sure. I lived in California at the time. My soccer team’s name was the Eagles so I liked them for that I guess. I watched a wild card game where they lost to the Falcons on a missed last second field goal by a replacement kicker (who was a punter). I felt so bad for him I started crying and have rooted for the Eagles ever since.

Might have been the inaugural year for putting in an actual criminal court in the stadium.

Pacers and Buddy Hield couldn’t agree on a contract extension, so they are looking to make a trade.

Interesting - fire up the trade machine!

Don't the Bucks basically have just a single 2029 first round pick available?

Either Jrue Holiday or Giannis (obviously he wouldn't be included) would have to be involved as they can't trade Lopez or Middleton as they are newly signed and the rest of the roster combined isn't enough salary to match Lillard.

So the very very best they could offer in a trade is a secondary pick swaps in 24, 26, 28 (New Orleans owns their pick swaps), a single first round pick, Holiday, and Beauchamp. In rerouting Holiday to a third team what is the best they could do for the Blazers?
