2023 Cleveland Browns - 7-5, Jaguars Limping into Cleveland (1 Viewer)

Given the free agent RB's still available and the direction this offense is headed I'll be surprised if AB prioritizes the position in the draft. A 5th-ish round dart throw? Sure - let him battle Ford. I wonder if he's after passing down specialists like McKissic and McKinnon though.

Props to Pluto.
Good column this morning, worth the read.

What I’m hearing about how the Browns approached their big March moves -- Terry Pluto
...THE OTHER DEFENSIVE END
...They targeted Okoronkwo and... have him rated higher than many teams... thrilled to get him..
Browns’ sneakiest 2023 NFL free agency signing
...the signing of defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo has garnered almost universal attention and acclaim.
----------------------
Of all the FAs signed, Okoronkwo caught my attention.
Love Jack Duffin's work. He's been on top of just about every move the Browns have made.
Nice breakdown of some of the free agent moves made.
I highlighted the name I'm most interested in.

honestly, i'm surprised they ever invested as much as they did at the running back position.

seems like there's always capable backs with fresh legs you can draft every year.

this is 'supposed' to be a deep RB class and we 'appear' thin after Chubb
Pete Smith
@_PeteSmith_
The takeaway with Hunt should be understanding he was never as good as he was viewed in Cleveland and that if you get a good back(s) this year, it can be a major boost alongside Chubb that fits Watson with a clear direction for the future.
Matt Powell@mattpow1
Ton of RB depth this year. Great year to fill the pipeline behind Chubb & Ford. Think there will be some RB value late (Abanikanda, K. Mitchell, Rodriquez, maybe Tucker). Wildcard is what happens with Hunt. Maybe he comes back on a team friendly deal.

An OUTSTANDING running back class is sitting before you in a draft that is weak at positions including but limited to LB, S, WR. OL isn't great either unless you're excited about 24 year old rookies. It would be malpractice not to take advantage.

Browns 7-Round Mock Draft, Ver. 1: Attempting to Sustain, Future Proof the Roster

98. Cartavius Bigsby, RB Auburn

... As much as the Browns aren't in a hurry to move on from Nick Chubb, they need to start preparing for that inevitability. Additionally, this running back class is outstanding ...

190. Keaton Mitchell, RB East Carolina

Given the talent available in this class, the Browns should take two running backs. They don't necessarily have to draft both and could grab an undrafted option for example, but somehow they should get two backs. That's not a knock on Jerome Ford as he's also going to be on the team and the Browns need to look to take multiple swings on finding Nick Chubb's eventual replacement or a stable of backs that can add up to a reasonable facsimile of what he's been for the Browns.

Getting 'decent' reviews for FA signings only bring lukewarm expectations.
I'm OK with lukewarm expectations.
Just about the middle of the pack.

NFL executives react to Browns free agency period
...the trade for wide receiver Elijah Moore, however, has turned heads in a good way:

“I love Cleveland, back-to-back years with Elijah and Amari Cooper, getting premium positions, taking advantage of situations where they were able to get them at a discount… If Deshaun can get back to what he was in Houston, that is a sneaky, dangerous team.”
Plugging necessary holes, and doing so at value, the Browns have earned praise and understanding around the league. But will it play out positively on the field?

Our win total over/under is 9.
I really, really want to take the over on that but can't. I don't want be bummed about the Browns if they suck AND lose a bet.

Hmnn. LBer hasn't been an area of focus for our FO so I found this interesting.
Not sure if the LBer injuries and struggles from last year impact draft plans but LBer was an issue last year.

The Success Of The 2023 Browns Defense Will Come Down To The Health Of The Linebackers
... injuries, ... started with Walker, ... three of the other top linebackers — Owusu-Koramoah, Phillips and Takitaki — joined him on injured reserve.
High Point ... from Fields ... week 12... A 2021 fifth-round pick...
Low Point The linebackers — and defense as a whole —23-10 loss Week 14. .. To make matters worse, Owusu-Koramoah suffered an injury ... fourth linebacker to be placed on injured reserve with a season-ending injury.
Who's Back for 2023? Owusu-Koramoah, Phillips and Fields... Sione Takitaki and Anthony Walker ... The Browns will look to add depth in the 2023 NFL Draft.
2023 Outlook the Browns know they'll have at least two young and still-growing players at the position in Owusu-Koramoah and Phillips.

It's JOK and if Walker returns to pre injury health with Fields as depth. Phillips ain't it and there will be no way of knowing if Takitaki returns to pre injury health until after the season begins. I'll be surprised if at least one is not drafted.

There are only two positions the #Browns could realistically double dip in the draft The most likely is RB The wildcard is S If they don’t draft two then a veteran FA as well is the most likely route
Jack Duffin@JackDuffin
Here is the #Browns current 53 man roster It is clear they can easily add 8 draft picks & more FAs, read more here: https://247sports.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/LongFormArticle/Can-8-Draft-Picks-Make-The-Cleveland-Browns-Roster-207762122/… Green - Roster Locks (35) Yellow - Bubble Guys (14) Red - Roster Holes (4)

Browns Perrion Winfrey absent for disciplinary reasons and Myles Garrett chases the sack record: Berea report
...Rookie defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey was absent for disciplinary reasons and head coach Kevin Stefanski wouldn’t say if Winfrey will play on Sunday or not.

Report: Cleveland Browns DT Perrion Winfrey Charged with Misdemeanor Assault in Houston

Thought he had turned a corner and had hope.
DT was priority.
We 'may' keep him, but we can't rely on him.
We really need to come out of the draft with a few more bodies on the D-Line.

Source: #Browns DT Perrion Winfrey was right in the middle of a screaming match that took place last season after the teams heartbreaking loss to the #Ravens in Week 7. Winfrey showed up late to practice early on last season, resulting in a benching. I’m told teammates have even questioned how he's still a member of the organization. Could Monday’s arrest be the Browns final straw? Full story here: https://t.co/niXe1Kot4y

Re-watching the Jets game right now on NFL Network like I said the moment he scored if Chubb steps out of bounds at the 1 the game is over 3 kneel downs.
Also Hunt not once but twice went out of bounds once at 2:15 and once at 2:02. Had Hunt not gone out of bounds at 2:02 the 2 minute warning hits then they kneel 3 times.
Yes the defense was terrible to end the game giving up 2 TD's in 2 minutes but they never have a chance if Hunt or Chubb don't go out of bounds/score.
Even 3 kneel downs and a FG would left the Jets 20 seconds and down 10.

No first or second round picks but this guy has done his research into what and who the Browns may be targeting when they select.
FWIW, I think he's right to be focused on EDGE pass rushers.

Has Andrew Berry Been Good At Drafting As Cleveland Browns General Manager - 2020
...As we look back on the 2020 draft, we can see that Andrew Berry has done a fantastic job, both his pick and the one after are the two highest-scoring picks. It is important that it is not just a draft pick that makes a player, the coaching staff has a big responsibility in developing those players.

Check back tomorrow where we will be breaking down the 2021 NFL Draft.

In retrospect, MKK has been warning us for weeks that they would draft a WR. personally, i think that was dumb.

i will, however, 100% support taking a NT in every draft and put him at DT.

I don't think it was dumb at all given the other options around at that point in the draft. You can never have a shortage of weapons on offense. Quite frankly, the WR group is weak. I know we added Elijah Moore, and I hope that works out, but that is not a slam dunk. Peoples-Jones is a #3 on a good day and sometimes a #5. Forget about Bell... Adding a big body WR is a good move, and potentially a good fit with Cooper and Moore. If nothing else, he pushes DPJ a little harder. I'm cool with the pick.

I'm guessing Tillman is a diamond in the rough in their eyes -- somebody they feel checks all the boxes & was passed over due to injury. I bet they're ecstatic. Hope they're right...

For not having a 1st and 2nd, you guys are killing it. I honestly would take the Browns draft over the Bears draft.

Dawand Jones -- very large man. Motivation has been questioned. If it's there, he's RT of the future.

so we’re giving up on Bell already?

I hope Tillman is faster than his 40 time.

Damn, McGuire was maybe my favorite sleeper DE.

Browns are having a top-5 draft in my eyes, especially if you count Watson and Moore as picks.

Height: 6-3, Weight: 303
This is a future starter. Does a lot of things well from a technical standpoint and has plus athleticism. Weight and power must be added to his game. (Chris Trapasso)

Very interesting to draft two O linemen from the same college team...a little prebuilt chemistry.

Expected that we'd take a shot at an OT and it is 'interesting' that we haven't yet extended Jed but he 'could' be Conklin's backup at RT considering Jack's injury history.
I like we took a BIG body and hope he develops.

Browns are the perfect team to take a guy like Dawand Jones, won't need play right away, and the Browns have one of the best OL coaches in football. if he is gonna work out anywhere Cleveland is as good a bet as any

Watch Charlie Thomas play for Georgia Tech. You will enjoy it.
>>> Charlie Thomas 2022 Regular Season Highlights | Georgia Tech LB

Hoping he makes the practice squad and develops.

Georgia Tech Linebacker Charlie Thomas Signs With The Cleveland Browns Thomas will sign with the Browns as an undrafted free agent
...Because of his size at 6'2 207 LBS, I don't think that Thomas is going to be a traditional linebacker that plays a lot of snaps in the box. I think he could make a mark as a safety or linebacker in nickel packages that is used in coverage and as a blitzer. Thomas tallied 10 career sacks at Georgia Tech, as well as reeling in four interceptions. His coverage grades of 80.5 in 2021 and 70.1 in 2022 suggest that there is potential for Thomas to be a good coverage player and the 10 sacks show he can be an effective blitzer from different places around the field.

No objective reasoning behind my long shot other than a random number I saw connected to him and have a 'feel'ng'.
Call yer long shot and you don't have to justify your pick.

so they drafted a QB.

do they try to sneak him onto the practice squad, or are they wasting a roster slot on him?

discuss.

I think the plan is for him to push DPJ (UFA after the season) off the roster with next year's 1-2-3 being Coop-Moore-Tillman.

Very curious to see what's done with the Wills option on Tuesday...

It's not like we didn't need WRs. Glad we added Moore and Tillman.
I still wouldn't consider our WR room to be "strong", but it's better.
