2023 Cleveland Browns - 7-5, Jaguars Limping into Cleveland (2 Viewers)

2023 NFL All-Breakout Team, Defense: Jaycee Horn and Derrick Brown poised to make noise in Carolina
S
Grant Delpit
Cleveland Browns · Age 24
Delpit flashed Pro Bowl potential in 2022 with 105 tackles, four interceptions and 10 passes defensed. But that could be just the beginning, a foreshadowing of his rise to the ranks of the elite at the position. As a 6-3, 208-pounder comfortable in the deep middle and near the box, Delpit is the kind of versatile, new-age safety NFL teams are looking for.

Lets be honest. average NFL fans or even 'somewhat-knowledgeable' NFL fans truly know the tasks or responsibilities of a safety because TV rarely shows them and focuses in on stupid stuff like fans in the stands or mascots or stock footage of the city they are in over showing the secondary or full shots so we can see the action.
So I have to take the word of people like Brooks or others I trust. I felt Delpit took a big step last year and the entire defense 'should' improve with the addition of Schwartz and personnel we acquired so I like this prediction.
Add, no other players from the AFCN made his All-Breakout Team, Defense list... However Pickens made his All-Breakout Team, Offense list.

Camp update.
One tidbit caught my attention.

Things I Think I Know About The Browns: Goodwin Leading As Camp Darling, DC Schwartz Rotations, Ward In Slot?

CHANGING ROLES: ALEX WRIGHT

Alex Wright had a rough rookie season with the Browns. He was forced into action, playing 543 snaps and grading at an overall PFF Grade of 38.4. Wright played some of his best snaps last season when the Browns moved him inside in their 4-3 front. Schwartz and his defensive staff may have identified this as a possibility for Wright this season.
Wright has been lining up on the interior of the defensive line during OTAs, which can only make him more valuable to the team. Schwartz talked about versatility on Wednesday and brought up Wright when doing so.
"We have some young developing players here that have had good off-seasons so far. Alex (Wright) and Jordan (Elliott), both of them have stood out and a lot of stuff and I think both of them can contribute inside. But the flexibility is important for matchups in the game. Moving guys around a little bit, you'll probably see a little bit more moving guys around maybe than they've done in the past. But it's all about just creating good matchups and finding out what the guys can do the best. We're going in with an open mind. We're not making any determinations on May 31."
At 6-5, 267 lbs., Wight has terrific size for an EDGE. I love the idea of him getting an opportunity to play the interior of the defensive line. At one point this offseason, I feared that Wright might slot in at EDGE number three on the depth chart and be forced into even more snaps before he was ready. Those fears were alleviated in the NFL Draft and with the signing of Za'Darius Smith. Wright now has an opportunity to win a much more appropriate role and expand upon his value.

Hmnn.
Still believe we need to add a veteran DT.
Biggest thing I've heard is that everyone and every report indicates that Watson is dialed-in.

The case of misdemeanor assault against Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey has been dropped after Winfrey completed a pretrial diversion program, court records show.

Winfrey was arrested in April in Harris County, Texas, after being accused of grabbing the hand of a woman he was dating, causing "bodily injury," according to court records.

Ole boy talked a good game but has proven to be pretty much nothing but a headache. Wouldn't hurt my feelings to see him let go but we won't cause draft pick.

So far, but let's see if Schwatrz's style allows him to excel. If not...

Jack Duffin@JackDuffin -Incredibly productive when on the field but injuries have been his biggest issue. My OBR FA Cheat Sheet “Maurice Hurst, 49ers ($Min) - If the medicals check out, I will never stop wanting to take a chance on him.”

Things I Think I Know About The Browns: Defensive Identity, A Healthy Mo Hurst and WR Depth - Bell vs Darden
...There is some buzz from OTA's and mandatory minicamp that Hurst looks healthy and could be a factor...
...The Browns' big-ticket signing at defensive tackle, Tomlinson, has taken notice of Hurst and talked about him on Wednesday, "Mo is a great guy and super great technician also, and he's one of the guys who's played in the system before, so he brings a lot to the table for us guys who haven't played in it. He always has things we can use to get a little edge and technique and stuff like that. So, he's been one of our biggest technicians in this process so far. Mo is a big part of our deal on so far."
Hurst has been working hard every day and has not gone unnoticed. He could answer critical questions in the middle of the Browns' defense if he avoids injury.

I've always liked Hurst. He fell in the draft due to med concerns. He's flashed but has always gotten hurt.
I believe these reports and think he will be a solid player with one concern.
I think he'll play well but his history indicates he won't last the year. Having said that, I am looking forward to seeing him when he's healthy.

need to add a vet DT
Jordan Elliott's New Deal is an Admission Browns Still Need a Starter
When the Cleveland Browns restructured Jordan Elliott's contract, they admitted something that's been apparent the entire offseason. They still don't have a starting caliber three-tech defensive tackle.
Elliott is a three-tech but has the capability to rush the passer from the nose. As a result, the nose is settled short of an injury. Dalvin Tomlinson and Siaki Ika will make the opening day roster and Elliott can function there situationally...
By leaning on Elliott to restructure, the Browns are admitting he's not the starter. The only other candidates on the roster are Maurice Hurst II, who has played 41 combined snaps the past two seasons, Trysten Hill, who is on his third team in two seasons, showing the occasional flash in a sea of mediocre play and second-year defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey who has been as unreliable on the field as he's been off of it.

Short of a miracle, two of these three players are not going to add up to a starter. A position the Browns have been dreadful the past two seasons, it would negligent to go into a third season in a row hoping that a starter will emerge...
...The question now is who do the Browns plan to add? Shelby Harris and Matt Ioannidis are the among the best available free agents, but there could be a player released or perhaps the Browns have their eye on a potential trade...

Hmnn. I think PFF screwed up and forgot that we traded for Za'Darius Smith in this article because they don't project him starting and don't mention him at all.

Early 2023 NFL roster rankings for all 32 teams: Strengths, weaknesses, rookies to watch and more
Biggest weakness in 2023: Defensive Line

Aside from Myles Garrett and Dalvin Tomlinson, there isn’t a ton of depth on the Browns’ defensive line following Jadeveon Clowney‘s departure. The Browns will look for players like Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and rookies Isaiah McGuire and Siaki Ika to step up and take some of the pressure off their star defenders.

They ranked our lineup 14th overall which isn't bad but the curious thing is that they had all-three of the other AFCN teams ranked above us and as I noted, completely ignored or forgot about Za'Darius Smith.
I know we're lacking another DT but I think they screwed up because if you note their 'projected starting lineups' they don't have Za'Darius Smith listed there in addition to saying we had no depth beyond Garrett and Tomlinson.
Have to think whoever wrote the article just forgot and that we should be in the top-dozen teams.

They changed our ranking from 14 AND now have us with a top-ten defensive line so they MUST have figured out we traded for Za'Darius Smith even though they still don't list him.
Here are the entire updated PFF rankings that show our roster ranks in the top-ten:

NFL Power Rankings: Chiefs and Eagles take top spots, Jets soar after 2023 NFL Draft
• Browns land in the top 10: Cleveland shored up its defense this offseason and added receiving help in Tennessee's Cedric Tillman and third-year receiver Elijah Moore.

They also have us as one of only three teams to have top-ten ranked offensive and defensive lines.

of the free agent moves made... I highlighted the name I'm most interested in.
Pressure Rate ... Okoronkwo > 13.4%
I LOVE Okoronko. He's a sleeper.
I'm pumped to see this group of pass rushers unleashed on the rest of the league. Can't wait to see them in action.

Cleveland Browns: Setting the Expectation for Ogbonnia Okoronkwo in 2023
... Browns signed Okoronkwo to a deal worth $19m with incentives built around sacks ...
Pass-Rush
Okoronkwo did not play meaningful snaps at the NFL level until the 2022 season with the Texans. He operated primarily as a rotational player until Week 11 when he overtook the starting role and never looked back. In fact, from Week 11 through Week 18, Okoronkwo ranked as follows from a pass-rush perspective (rankings among qualifiers at the edge position):
  • 3rd in quarterback pressure rate (20.5 percent)
  • 8th in pass-rush grade (87.4)
  • 10th in pass-rush productivity (10.3)
  • 11th in pass-rush win rate (22.6)
...Okoronkwo has shown so much improvement from when he arrived in the NFL and he is forming a deadly arsenal of moves. The added layers of power to his game have paid off, and he has complimented his base speed moves with simple counters to keep offensive tackles off balance. He rarely over-extends his rush to work himself out of a play with a refined feel for where the quarterback is going to work in the pocket. This is an ascending pass rusher.”
...
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Okoronkwo play a career-high number of snaps. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see him produce at an even better clip in 2023 given that he was near the top at the position on double-team rate in 2022:
... In 2022, Obeezy recorded a quarterback pressure once per seven pass-rush snaps, even with the aforementioned high double-team rate. His athleticism (133.8 pSPARQ) and pass-rush ability, while learning from two of the best in the game, should equal an upward trajectory of production in 2023.
Projected stat lines: 14.8 pass-rush win rate, seven sacks, and 49 quarterback pressures.

4th Rd pick in 2022, was playing pretty well
I'm sure he'll end up on the Patriots
Like a lot of young people, he couldn't convince himself to be home by midnight. He got himself in (minor) trouble a couple times, got out of it, and found more. Maybe someone will be able to get through to him elsewhere, but for now, it looks like a continuing saga. <sigh>

“According to U.S. Betting Report's Fan Cost Index, attending a Browns game is the second most expensive in the NFL behind the Las Vegas Raiders. The cost for a family of four to attend a game at Cleveland Browns Stadium is $593.23, an increase of 72.6% over 2012 numbers.”

Combined with the quality of the product on the field, no wonder their attendance stinks.

Breaking: Free agent DT Shelby Harris is signing with the #Browns, per sources. Harris was with the #SeahawksView attachment 4175 last season after being included in the Russell Wilson trade. Highly productive player who racked up 24.5 sacks and 40 TFLs in his career.

Browns adding to an already stacked roster. This DL is going to eat this year.

it is great that the keep adding pieces, because they need them.

depth is going to be the issue this year if they can't get more out of the younger players.

Browns lose linebacker for the season

success of 2023 Browns comes down to health of linebackers
Phillips was a stretch to make the team anyway.
I don't know about stretch, but I think the brass really hoped one or two of the young pups showed enough to bump him from the edge of the roster and he definitely entered camp no higher than 5th. JOK and Walker are the keys to this LB corps - this team can deal with whatever else is around them so long as those two stay in one piece.

So kickers....
Isn't anything to devote time nor energy to until Sep 1 and probably later. He's got 2+ weeks to work through his yips issues followed by a short leash. Reassess the market once everyone else cuts down to 53 (and his own performance the next 2 games) then make a beginning of the season plan, but it comes with a quick hook if this is what we also see come real games in September.

IMO, York will be in the league for many years to come. Either live through his youthful discretions or watch him perform for someone else.

Huge fan of DTR here. Watched him grow from an athlete pretending to be a QB to a legit dual-threat playmaker over the course of five years as UCLA's starter. My biggest concerns for him coming into the league were size and arm strength - both of which were alleviated during the draft process...

I figured he was 6'0'' with thick soles on and 190 lbs soaking wet. Instead he measured in at 6'2'' bare foot, and while 205 lbs is still skinny for that height, he clearly has the frame to put on 10-15lbs of good weight the next few years as he matures into his grown man body, which would put him in a similar height/weight combo to Aaron Rodgers.

Speaking of Rodgers, like ARod, it turns out DTR has a absolute gun. He tied the record this past year for fastest throw velocity in NFL combine history at 62 MPH (with Josh Allen). Mahomes' number was 60 MPH, as another comp. DTR can sling it WAY harder than I had perceived!

I go back to prime ARod as the best comp for this dude. I see a ton of similarities in their games. DTR was an absolute steal for you guys in the 5th round - and I think he's going to be a legit NFL starting QB, sooner or later. A few years sitting and learning behind Watson will do him good as he puts on weight. Rodgers sat for three years before becoming Rodgers.

Please tell my wife 6'3" and 205lbs is skinny. I keep getting called fat over here.

speculation already running rampant that DTR will get the backup spot because they don't think they can sneak him onto the practice squad.

if i'm Dobbs, not sure i'm excited about sitting on the bench tonight.
