2023 Las Vegas Raiders - RIP Jack - one of the greatest Super Bowl moments ever (6 Viewers)

Guess who is the AFC Defensive Player of the Week?

Imagine if we had someone that brought half of what he does on the defense with him.
We had a chance earlier this year and wouldn’t need to be imagining right now. Great players fall into the lap of LV during the draft year after year but they pass on them for inferior players. It’s not a great model for any sports team.
The more I think about it, the Tyree Wilson pick was a long view, big picture move. We may not like the pick (for the record, I don’t) but they aren’t dumb. They knew he was injured, to an extent, he was going to be a project. I don’t think they expected him to play much at all for at least the first half of the season. The Chan Jones fiasco has thrust Wilson into playing a lot sooner than McD, Graham and Ziegler all expected. Wilson is also a red flashing sign to me that this regime made that pick knowing they weren’t going anywhere for at least a couple years unless things went horribly wrong. Just my opinion and thoughts on Wilson, I hope he gets it together soon because it would be nice for Maxx to get some help.
which is why our team sucks year in and year out, you don't waste a top 10 pick on a project player that needs years to develop (injury recovery included).
I wanted Carter as much as anyone, if not more, but why not take a project if you're not going to contend this season? If he's the next Greg Townsend we'll all be thrilled with that.

I would have been thrilled if they landed Anthony Richardson and he's as big a project as they come.

If he bombs he's no worse than any other highly drafted bomb.

The bar is low in Las Vegas, I think it was a huge win just to draft a guy that everyone outside the organization didn't immediately recognize as a huge reach.

I, for one, welcome our new future Greg Townsend.
Choosing to draft an inferior player is never the correct decision. Why must it happen year after year?
Seven teams passed on Carter and none of them had nearly the reason to that the Raiders did.

We all wanted him and we all understand why the Raiders didn't draft him. Maybe it's time to get over it.

The Raiders made the decision to build on the lines which is something that we all agree with, or at least most of us do, and they took the guy that virtually everybody agreed was the best defensive end in the draft.

And, before we start drawing conclusions after five games about who's superior and who's inferior can we please remember that Jalen Carter ended up on the team that led the league in sacks last year and Wilson ended up on the team that finished 30th. So maybe Carter has a little bit more help surrounding him to start his career.
Most of the other teams that passed on Carter had good reason. Carolina, Houston, and Indy drafted highly rated QBs, the most important position in the NFL. Houston chose Will Anderson over Carter which wasn’t a bad choice at the time. Anderson is doing ok and was highly rated and healthy at draft day. Cards took the best OT in the draft which is another very important position. Seattle landed a great CB and Witherspoon is already having a great season. Even though he is a CB, he has more sacks, tackles, and QB pressures in 4 games than our rookie DE will likely have all season.

Essentially, two teams passed on Carter and there is no excuse for either. We know the Raiders mistake and Atlanta made almost as big of a mistake in drafting Robinson. The well-run teams in the NFL don’t draft a RB in round one, no matter how highly rated. Period.

LV and Atlanta passed on Carter and should not be forgiven for their poor decisions. Maybe Atlanta is following the LV playbook and knowingly choosing inferior players because they are saving their good picks for later. I think that was the story being fed here which is quite comical.
I think it's fair to throw out the teams that took QBs. I don't think it's fair to throw out the others because of the current performance of who they did take or the position. The way I look at it the teams that passed on him were:

Texans - I thought Carter and Anderson were the top two players and i can't fault them for taking Anderson
Seahawks - Could def have used a DT but went CB instead
Cards - Needed everything but passed. Johnson was some people's top tackle, but this was a down year for OT and there was no consensus top OL.
Raiders - sigh
Falcons - I thought it was madness not to take Carter. Allgeier looked really good last year.
Bears - Another poorly run, bad team making another mistake trading out of the pick and not taking Carter

Maybe you should get over yourself. Contrary to what you believe you do not own this thread and your opinion does not matter more than those of other posters. And now your opinion means nothing to me.

Thanks but it's okay and not entirely out of line as a response to my post.

I find the constant negativity in here tiresome. I should be better at controlling my own response.

ETA: I blame @LawFitz for making me act serious yesterday. It gave me a case of the vapours.

How about you take personal responsibility for your actions. I'm sorry, not sorry, for triggering you by asking how/why you could possibly compare Tyree Molasses Wilson to an all-time Raider great.

I took it for what it appeared to be - a 'joke' veiling your meltdown justification. Let's drop it and move on, though.

Ok here is some positivity. Next 5 games

vs Pats
at Bears
at Lions
vs Giants
vs Jets

I'm predicting 4-1 in those games for a 6-4 record.
Here’s more positive: it’s a miracle this team is 2-3.
It’s not just about the well-documented offensive struggles, think back to the offseason.
They very possibly could’ve entered the season with a QB room of Hoyer, O’Connell and Garbers with JimmyG on IR or waived.
A defense, full of question markswith, no stars other than Maxx. A star WR questioning the direction of the front office. Star DE goes off the deep end right at the start of the season. Nate Hobbs has barely played, again… Bennett has missed time, Oline is out of sync, Dline is overpowered at times, and here we are at 2-3.
You’re welcome

There has been some good defensive play from some other players. Mostly low key though. Spillane, Moehrig, Peters, Robertson are a few examples of guys playing above average. The big difference though is we don't have anyone that is consistently being a playmaker outside of Maxx. We are not getting anyone to consistently play above average on the D line as well right now to assist Maxx. If we do, man, that can turn this decent defense (best we have seen from the Raiders in a couple of decades as sad as that is) to a really good defense. I would be willing to take a swing on Frank Clark once available. At this point, what do we have to lose? If he has something left and is somewhat as he has been in the past, 30 years old isn't too old and maybe with what appears to be a sour ending with the Donkeys and one with the Chefs, he would be extra incentivized to join the Raiders and get back at those orgs. A guy can dream, no?

There are several edge players supposedly on the trade block right now...

Danielle Hunter
Brian Burns
Frank Clark
Carl Lawson
Chase Young

And it's rumored the Raiders have been exploring potential deals for an edge rusher, so hopefully they will get something done soon for a guy that comes in and contributes.

heres a joke to lighten the mood :-)

Years ago I thought I would try some therapy as I was going thru a lot in my life and felt overwhelmed....During the therapy the talking doctor created a sceneiro...he said ..." Richard...I want you you to imagine that you're standing on a train track and a train is coming right at you...what do you do " ?

I said ..." I would jump into my helicopter 1f681.png and fly away"

The doctor looked surprised and asked curiously ..."where did the helicopter come from" ?

I said ..."The same place you got that ****in Train "
Needless to say he couldn't help me

Interesting that no team even wanted to do a late pick swap for him on the min vet contract.

Also just saw this from yesterday's transactions:

Raiders -
Signed DE Jordan Willis

Chase Young would be phenomenal. He is effective as is right now getting pressures but I don't think he is fully to his potential still getting back to 100% after the previous injuries. Tons of upside with him and ability now. Rotate him with Wilson (expectation here being Wilson gets better as health and development continue) and you can even get all three on the line in obvious passing downs with kicking Wilson inside. Assuming we did not over pay, this would get my blood flowing for sure.

Young was a beast his rookie season. If they can “buy low” on him now and he can return to anything close to his pre injury level, that could be huge.
Just maybe they can learn something from Chandler Jones, invest in a player with upside, not past their prime.

Clark has been released

Interesting that no team even wanted to do a late pick swap for him on the min vet contract.

Also just saw this from yesterday's transactions:

Raiders -
Signed DE Jordan Willis
Who’s he?

That does not preclude picking Carter. Having great play for the first year or two wouldn't cause him to run out of talent by the time we're contenders, it's not like a tank of gas one could burn through. No one wants Wilson to be better than Carter today, we want a glimmer of hope he'll be in the same zip code within a year or two. We haven't had nigh a glimmer yet. Just the opposite, he has looked perfectly awful. 2 point stance, 3 point stance, full attack mode, completely irrelevant. None has been good. Even when he pins his ears back and goes full blast from the snap, it's 3/4 of a second late and the OT is in his stance, braced for impact, and 1/2 way through a Red Bull to beef up for contact by the time Wilson gets there.

He wasn’t “bad” he flashed a lot of major talent, which I’m sure you can easily find on the internet. At one point, a few media draftniks and insiders had Wilson ranked #1 overall (Peter Schager being one of them). I think the injury and the rehab that went along with it has really set him back. And like I said before, I don’t think they expected him on the field much when they drafted him, hoping Jones was going to have a better year than last year.

I keep asking myself this question. Nothing in any of the scouting reports even hinted at speed off the snap or processing issues. It's only been 5 games, he has/had a foot injury to recover from, he missed a ton of camp time, he has to learn a notoriously difficult/complex scheme, he's making the leap to the NFL, and yadda yadda yadda so his book is certainly not written by any stretch. No one is a bust after 5 games but it's a bit scary seeing how far in over his head he looks right now. And it's exacerbated a ton when you look over at Carter and he's flashing dominance all over the place.

It's not fair to compare them. Wilson didn't ask to be.

it's two separate problems.
1. Wilson looks slow off the ball. Like comically, historically slow off the ball.
2. jalen Carter is a top 5 DT in the NFL---right now.

Jalen Carter is out this weekend, Wilson has yet to miss a game. If durability is your best ability in the NFL then Wilson has that over Carter 🤣🤣

A terrible person who is a Raider fan might be hoping that Carter does something awful to ruin his career, simply to make the Tyree Wilson pick look better.

I am not saying I am such a person, but I don't think I am a very good person so......

It's irrelevant what he wants. He plays on the biggest stage in the world. If you don't want to be compared to your contemporaries you need to not be in a competitive sport. This isn't comparing a 6th round pick with a HOF here, these guys were drafted 2 picks apart and signed nearly identical contracts. You think Wilson ever said in his interviews "I hope you don't take me in round 1, I'd rather not be compared to those guys".

I also wasn't "comparing" them in my comments. I was explicitly stating that it was too soon to make any judgement either way, but the optics after a very short 5 game window are just really bad.

I have no problem comparing them for the rest of their careers, I wanted Carter more than everyone, and knew no one would give a #### about the racing thing the second he got drafted.

I was making a very small point that Carter being awesome doesn't mean I am not rooting for Wilson. We see that a lot. We all do it.

I can't imagine anyone not wanting Wilson to do well. Being frustrated at the current optics, sure, but no one here doesn't want him to succeed.

Rumor is drafting inferior players is just part of the Raiders plan. LV is going to start derafting the good players in 2 or 3 years. Just wait a few more years for things to turn around.

Not wishing injury on JimmyG, I hope he’s ok but when your backups play better than you, maybe it’s time you become the backup.

They are so hard to watch for the entire game , all i do is shake my head and mumble ''what the F are they doing''?
