2023 Philadelphia Eagles - Complete waste of a season finally comes to an end. (11 Viewers)

One thing that's interesting to me is that the Brotherly Shove play is practically unstoppable yet we don't seem to have a power run game. I think this has more to do with the OC and personnel formations. I feel like we are trying to shove a square peg in a round hole with our light fronts when we should become more of a power offense scheme.
I think it's more about a 600 pound squat and a HOF center. Don't have a true power back other then hurts
It's also about the 2 guys behind Hurts helping to pushing him forward.

Have they ever even tried a normal QB sneak without the extra horses behind Hurts? Genuinely curious.
It’s really not though. It’s been pointed out many times that more often than not Jalen gets the first down/TD before the pushing begins.
Last night on at least one of them it looked to me like he might have been short if not for the 2 guys behind him giving him the final push. The problem is Hurts kind of body surfs on his lineman so he doesn't touch the ground before the ball crosses the line to get to.

I think that's the reason it works so well. Its almost impossible to make Hurts' body touch the ground short of the first down.

Ooooh, I think I just cracked the code:
Don't let Hurts surf. Simple. 😁
Yeah definitely there are times where he wouldn’t get it across if not for Mailata pushing him. Just saying the reason they are damn near unstoppable at that play is that Jalen alone shoots for like 65%. Once you throw in the ACTUAL tush push, it becomes a fait accompli.

The fact that the Eagles are -2 in turnover differential and are still 6-1 shows that they find ways to win despite playing sloppy and not protecting the football, which is what good teams do. That said, Hurts is tied with Jimmy G for the most INTs this season with 8 (yikes) and has lost 2 fumbles.

Curuious to see how yall do against the "gauntlet" teams, which all have positive turnover differentials up to this point. Teams the Eagles have beat so far are all negative in turnovers except Tanpa Bay (+7). SF is currently #1 at +8 (and facing Cousins tonight), Dallas is #3 with +6.

A lot can change week to week, but its gonna be interesting to see how they do if they turn the ball over against teams that usually turn turnovers into wins.
It is definitely something that needs to be cleaned up. At the same time, it seems close to half the INTs are of a fluky nature, not more on bad decision making. But again, he HAS to clean that up.

Up until the Jets game last week, teams had not scored any points off turnovers. I think that is a credit to how great the defense plays at times, and especially coming off a turnover they have a "dog mentality" if you will to not let the opponent benefit. For instance last night, the fumble was on the Eagles 23 yard line and the Dolphins ended up kicking a FG from the Eagles 22 yard line.

If we can get a few guys back on defense (starting safety Blankenship, new starting slot CB Bradley Roby - who is technically a 3rd string guy we signed off the street, so last night was a 4th stringer at slot, signed off the Steeler practice squad) as well as our starting RG (health is sort of a floating issue), there is not a team that I feel we can't match up with. IMHO we have the best Offensive line and best defensive line in football, and when you have that, its going to keep you in most games.

Also, I think we can all agree by now that Desai is a HUGE upgrade over Jonathan Gannon. I can only think of what Gannon would have done against the Dolphins last night with all the players we have out at key positions in the secondary. Desai is much more situationally aware and shows more creativity in his calls, IMO.

The Tennessee Titans are trading All-Pro defensive back Kevin Byard to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles will be sending the Titans a 2024 5th and 6th rounder and safety Terrell Edmunds, per multiple league sources.

Gannon would have given Hill 20 yards of cushion, and he would have challenged Flipper Anderson’s record.

Its funny b/c when I was watching the game, every time I saw Hill in press coverage I almost s*** myself at first, but then after a few reps, I realized "oh yeah Desai!!!"

Other than the TD, which was a fault of good ole Edmunds being late.

I’m not sure Edmunds would have stopped anything on that play even if he wasn’t late. Hill’s burst of speed was astonishing.

Hill dropped an almost certain TD with no one near him.

This is a game-changer in the secondary. Byard is one of the best in the NFL and can play both safety spots and nickel. He will be able to fill in multiple roles if needed in the Eagles secondary and will take what has already been a pretty good secondary and take it up a level.

** Byard is not only elite, he is consistent. Byard has played in every single game since 2017. He is currently ranked as the 15th best safety overall and 9th best in coverage, per PFF. He is 30-years old, but he is not declining, and he is still one of the best in the game.

** The compensation is a steal for the Eagles. Edmunds is a nice veteran player, but to get Byard for Edmonds and two late-round picks is a no-brainer.

** Once again Howie Roseman shows he is going all-in to try to win a Super Bowl

Figured Byard was gonna get dealt at the deadline, was always more likely than Henry or Tannehill.

He's a gigantic upgrade from Edmunds, and at little cost, but I'd disagree that he's still elite. He's a solid starter, but his age has been beginning to show. He was elite through 2021, but not so much since.

Still love the trade though, just want to argue to have more realistic expectations. He's more of a top-12 Safety than a top-3 one.

I gotta say, some good moves.

Current veterans on the Eagles roster acquired via trade:

WR AJ Brown for a 1st and 3rd round pick

CB Darius Slay for a 3rd and 5th round pick

S Kevin Byard for a 5th and 6th round pick and S Terrell Edmunds

RB D’Andre Swift for a 4th and swap of 7th round picks

I talk a lot of trash on these forums, but the Eagles are obviously one of the very few elite NFC teams. I can totally see an NFCCG rematch coming, assuming both teams stay healthy.

Not a bad deal at all. Funny how they were able to unload Edmunds in the deal. I guess Blankenship and Byard are starters maybe Syndney brown in slot?

Considering who the Eagles had back there...

I was calling for him in the offseason. Very glad we finally got the CJGJ replacement. Word is he grew up a die hard Eagles fan too, so that is very cool too.

Howie Roseman will eventually be in the Hall of Fame.

Guess you haven't watched all that closely. EVERYONE has been trying it, and NOBODY has been close to as successful. Watch a dozen of these plays in slow mo, and it's clear that in an overwhelming number of these cases the pushers had little to no impact on the play. Half the time hurts has a yard before they can even get their hands on him to push at all.

And the complaints are dumb. "It's not a football play" or "its ugly" being laughably bad reasons to outlaw. "It's dangerous" would be a good reason, except that it's no more dangerous then any other football play, and arguably safer then most (injuries being primarily a product of momentum and awkward angles, the first of which doesn't exist on this play and the second still being less then many plays)

And yeah they did plenty of normal sneaks a couple years ago, and were successful on those too

Guess you haven't watched all that closely.
I haven't. Last night was the first I've watched the Eagles this season, but I've just seen several times watching highlights where the push is what gets it done.

Edit: For the record, I'm not against the play. Just trying to figure out why they started doing if they were doing reg QB sneaks and it was working.

There are very few GMs in NFL history whose names are known by casual non-homer fans. I think Howie is one of them now.

Statically speaking Desai’s defense are a lot worse than what Gannon did last year.

And he’s blitzing less lol

Yesterday he did a lot of what Gannon did in his time here. Zone it up and let the DL do work. Our DL, against an OL missing 3 starters and a not real mobile QB helps too

You are probably right about the stats. But for me, its really just a feel, I felt the good QB's torched us every time they played us. And in the Super Bowl we just could not stop the run. When we won in 2017 w Jim Schwartz at the helm, he always preached stopping the run first, then attacking the QB after we make them 1 dimensional. Maybe I'm biased, I probably am, but I prefer that method. All those sacks last year and for whatever reason, couldn't get a single one in the biggest game, couldn't stop the run in the biggest game.

Gannon defense 2021: 9th against the run, 11th vs the Pass.
Gannon Defense 2022: 1st against the pass, 16th against the run.
Desai defense 2023: 23rd v the pass, 1st against the run

I just think its creative thinking, taking advantage of the way the rules are set up. I don't think most people would just go no brainer go for the QB sneak alone on an opponents 20 yard line. And the stats show overall, this version is like 95% effective compared to the standard QB sneak which I believe is 82%.

Plus their is a psychological factor at play here, where you have to believe defensive players are either pissed off, or upset or just plain ole demoralized by it.

Yeah that killed my fantasy output last night I have to hope SF gives up PTs and doesn’t get a bunch of ska TO and or TDs.

Would’ve been a munch different game if he catches that though

Back Nickel sub packages Brown comes on. Allows them to play that when in the nickel 3 safety package more.

They are worse in fantasy this year than last as well. Defense has played well through the eye test but statistics are down.

And the funny thing is after the bolded Lurie wanted to fire Scwhartz as he was embarrassed by their performance in the SB

Kevin Byard is fresh coming off the Titans bye week, will play 2 games with the Eagles, and have another bye week to rest up for the rest of the season.

Instantly going from 2-4 to 6-1 with another bye week?

New #Eagles S Kevin Byard in his career against the NFC East:

- Against the #Cowboys: 7 solo tackles, 4 assists and 3 interceptions in 2 games.

- Against the #Giants: 12 solo tackles, 5 assists, 1.0 sack and 1 interception in 2 games .

- Against the #Commanders: 12 solo tackles, 5 assists and 1 interception in 2 games.

Total: 31 solo tackles, 14 assists, 5 interceptions, and one sack in six games

Yeah I don't give a s*** about the fantasy side of the defense. I just pressure and wins. Stopping the run doesn't get fantasy points, but it definitely helps win Championships

Interesting stat Patrick Mahomes is 29-3 Vs AFC West. That’s the best record and win % by any QB against their own Division since AFC/NFC merger. Not even Tom Brady has done that.

I’d rather have a defense that doesn’t play a soft as baby sh* philosophy which is what Fangios scheme is. Not sure why this guy gets so much praise around this league. Give me the aggressive defense that zero blitz’s, blitz’s a safeties and corners and LB.

My point was more statistically the defensive numbers are worse this year then when Gannon had the squad though

AJ brown last night tied Calvin Johnson with his 5th straight game of 100+ yds receiving if he had another next week he breaks the record

Not sure it was possible, but after watching your Coach get all cocky in his presser, I think his face is more punchable than before
Yeah I feel ya there. Love him as our coach. He definitely doesn't cower to criticism, or the conservative analytics. The kinda guy you love leading you, hate going against. A perfect fit for Philadelphia.
Not sure I’d love him leading my team. Guy acts like a total doosh when there’s a camera around 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don’t really watch pressers or interviews, but I really couldn’t care less as long as he gets results. You wouldn’t want him coaching the cowboys if he took them to a Super Bowl?

It does in my league. We start with 22 and points scored and yards gained make it go down from there. Sacks, fumbles, ints and safeties obviously make it go back up.
