2023 San Francisco 49ers - VICTORY MONDAY!! SF 13.5 pt favorites over Kyler Murray and the Cardinals (9 Viewers)

Akash A

Pass Rush Win Percentage, PFF, DTs:

1. David Onyemata, 28.9%
2. Dexter Lawrence, 26.2%
3. Kevin Givens, 22.2% (!)
4. Javon Hargrave, 21.6% (!!)

Armstead and Kinlaw come in at 13th and 14th, respectively. #49ers have 4 DTs in the Top-14 through 2 weeks.

Below are Pro Football Focus' five highest-graded 49ers players on offense against the Rams.

Bosa finished the game with five total pressures, three quarterback hits, and two hurries, boasting a team-high win percentage of 31.9.

Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw earned the second-highest grade of his career and his highest since Week 12 of 2020 (91.6). Kinlaw racked up four pressures and four hurries. He was also credited with a betted pass.

Lombardi:

Big improvement: The 49ers' offensive line only allowed 5 pressures against the Rams after allowing 14 against Pittsburgh.

Spencer Burford: 3
Colton McKivitz: 1
Jake Brendel: 1

SF held Aaron Donald to only 2 pressures, 0 sacks

Wagoner:

QB Matthew Stafford got rid of the ball on average of 2.57 seconds on Sunday, tied for the 8th fastest time to release in the league.

Interestingly, 49ers QB Brock Purdy posted his quickest average release of his young career too: 2.41 seconds (4th fastest).

F'n sorry *** Cardinals

The Cardinals, who put S Budda Baker on IR today, signed S Qwuantrezz Knight off the 49ers' practice squad. Arizona was very interested in Knight after he was part of SF's cuts to get down to 53 players last month.

Turnover Differential thru Week 2:

Cowboys, +7
Tampa Bay, +5
Philadelphia, +4
San Francisco, +3

🎵 One of these things is not like the others 🎵

Shanahan admitted today he needs to get Mitchell involved, which I wholeheartedly agree with. Mitchell is really good in his own right and there’s no reason he can’t take 5-7 of CMC’s touches to keep them both fresh.
He says a lot of **** he never follows through on, really hope this is something he actually adjusts. He’s on pace for 408 touches, **** needs to change if you A) don’t want him to get hurt B) would like some gas in the tank for the playoffs.

Lombardi:

There’s a tie atop the NFL for best QBR…

1. Dak Prescott, Cowboys: 83.7
1. Brock Purdy, 49ers: 83.7
Jimmy G with a QBR of 58. 3 ints (one in the end zone) and a fumble (not lost). Excited to see his 6-7 win season and 25+ turnovers, assuming he plays 17.

If watching the 49ers win is number 1 for me on Sundays, watching Jimmy G suck has to be number 2.

I think Shanahan as a coordinator is so locked in on winning on the next play that he totally loses focus on what's good for Shanahan as a coach/de facto GM. This also happened to an extent with Lance last year - yeah, calling a power QB run off tackle might give you your highest expected yards/play on 2nd down, but maybe running your QB into the line repeatedly is not worth the extra 0.75 yards?

I'm glad Jimmy is gone, but don't understand the hate.

Jimmy was amazing those first 5 games he started in 2017. Team was total crap yet won 5 straight when Jimmy took over. Was really excited about 2018 and then the ACL injury in game 3. Never seemed the same after the injury. Solid QB who game managed an otherwise outstanding team, but the team just couldn't get over that final hurdle against teams that had superior QB play.

A competent QB would’ve won at least 1 title during his time here. Guy is a bum, and smiling on the sideline while playing terrible did kind of annoy me.

Aiyuk not expected to play tonight, so he can rest for 10 more days before Week 4 vs Arizona.

I hope we see Eli Mitchell get some work tonight to give CMC a break.

The defense is a serious concern right now. Against Stafford, we can wait for the inevitable mistake, to win a SB and beat the likes of Hurts and Mahomes, the defense needs to force those mistakes. After this game, hopefully they do some soul searching. Bosa is basically invisible, Hargrove meh. It’s early and we’re 2-0, so on the surface, it’s fine… but they need to start figuring this out right now.
Don't need a Defense when you have the Unstoppable Force.

Mercy Rule will be invoked tonight.

Nick Wagoner:

Giants blitzed #49ers QB Brock Purdy on a whopping 74% of his drop backs. That's the highest blitz rate faced by a QB with at least 30 drop backs since Colin Kaepernick against Arizona in 2013 (88%).

The 29 blitzes Purdy faced more than doubled his previous high of 14.

Al Sacco:

Since Brock Purdy took over in the first quarter against the Dolphins in Week 12 of 2022, he has 20 TD passes and 3 INTs (including playoffs).

Brock Purdy vs the blitz tonight 20-31, 247 yards, 2 TD

Masterclass.

Situation reminds me so much of Brady year 2 (starting). Plenty of people still didn't believe dude was legit even week after week of him doing this exact kind of thing early that season. These situational stats are the forerunner to becoming the next Burrow when the need arises, which may or may not come this year, given how good the Niner D and RBs are. Right now, when the Niners need Brock to make plays, even when pressured, he makes them.

The 49ers have score 30 or more points in six straight regular season games dating to last season. That's tied for the longest streak of any team in the last 10 seasons.

Choo choo!!!

It's good to be a 49er fan right now.
Not really. It's actually kind of boring. Yeah, I know Georgia fans who would enjoy seeing them play Tennessee-Martin every weak. I like at least a little bit of drama and at least a small chance that they might lose.

Purdy looked a little shaky in the first half but also had some beautiful throws in the second half. Watching all these receivers just drag defenders all over the field every week is so fun.

49ers currently have the best odds to win the SB, followed by KC.

If they can stay healthy, I like their chances.

The funniest thing to me when people criticize Purdy is that they seem to believe (or want to believe) that he won't ever get any better than he is now. I hate to break it to them, but he is going to get even better with experience, especially on his deeper passes. He will never be Josh Allen and hit people 60 yards down the field, but like Joe Montana, he will hit them in stride 30 yards down the field and let them run it in the rest of the way.

Going to be a fun ride with Brock

His 2 touchdown throws, I felt were pretty impressive. Both passes were in the face of pressure to a degree. I like the kid. Giants let them off the hook on 3rd and long way too many times.

I know one thing at least from the people I talk to in real life and reading the reactions and commentary on the Twittersphere: The fans of the team the Niners have eliminated the last 2 years really really don't like Brock Purdy. Which I find funny.

Yep - I think last night was like his 11th start? It's not like he's a finished product. I think he has plenty of arm strength and when he gets those downfield throws dialed in accuracy wise he will be a beast. And compared to Jimmy G, who seemed to be mentally incapable of throwing more than 15 yards, Purdy already looks like Marino.

Yep. 11 starts. He's still essentially a rookie. By the end of this reg season, he will have 25 starts (assuming he stays healthy). There's no reason to think he won't get better with reps and playing time.

I Love the answer he gives to this question after the game:

You put up 310 passing yards and a passer rating over 111. Do you accept that as a pretty good game or do you don't even want to think about that?

"I don't really get wrapped up in the stats and stuff. There's some throws out there that I missed that could've obviously helped us get the lead earlier, quicker and faster. Those are the things that sort of are in my mouth that I have a bad taste from that I want to be better at. So watch the film, keep getting better and we just want to keep winning."

Stats? Purdy don't care about no stinkin stats! The kid just wants to win.

49ers announce multi-year contract extensions for GM John Lynch and HC Kyle Shanahan

The duo joined the 49ers in February of 2017 and have since led the organization to the postseason three times, claimed two NFC West division titles (2019 & 2022), reached three NFC Championship games (2019 & 2021-22) and a trip to Super Bowl LIV. Under their leadership, the 49ers have posted a regular season record of 55-46 over the past seven seasons and gone 6-3 in the playoffs. Since 2019, San Francisco’s 45 wins are tied for the fourth-most in the NFL and are the second-most in the NFC.

Lynch has been vigilant in acquiring players who embody the team’s culture on the field and in the community since arriving in San Francisco. He has been responsible for drafting the likes of All-Pros DL Nick Bosa, TE George Kittle, S Talanoa Hufanga, WR Deebo Samuel and LB Fred Warner, acquiring key players such as Pro Bowl FB Kyle Juszczyk and DL Javon Hargrave in free agency, as well as finding late-round successes in QB Brock Purdy and LB Dre Greenlaw, among others. Lynch also led the charge in acquiring RB Christian McCaffrey and T Trent Williams via trade. In 2019, Lynch was named Executive of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America.

Shanahan was named the 20th head coach in franchise history on February 6, 2017. In 2019, he was named Coach of the Year by Sporting News and NFC Coach of the Year by the Committee of 101 after leading the 49ers to a 13-3 regular season record, the NFC West Division Title and an appearance in Super Bowl LIV. San Francisco’s nine-win improvement from 2018 to 2019 was the largest win improvement from one season to the next in franchise history. During his time as head coach, San Francisco has averaged 367.3 net yards per game, the fifth-most in the NFL since 2017.

Kinlaw SZN

Javon Kinlaw had 11 pressures in 2021 and 2022 combined.

Kinlaw's already at 10 pressures in 3 weeks this season. Turning into a key contributor on this defensive line already.

Hargrave too

Per PFF, Javon Kinlaw and Javon Hargrave are tied for #1 in the NFL in quarterback hurries (10). Nick Bosa's right behind them with 9.

They've played one more game than Hutchinson and Carter, but insane the impact that Kinlaw and Hargrave are having early in the season.

Kinlaw's been a very pleasant surprise.

The extensions are noteworthy to me only insofar as it signals the management team isn't planning on totally mortgaging the future for a 1-2 year run like the Rams did. If that was the plan I don't think Lynch and Shanahan would want to be the ones stripping the roster to the bone and rebuilding it again.

and still to this day Shanny's kid has yet to win a SB. chokes in big playoff games. choked atlanta right out of the SB win vs NE. and yet once again this season, SF will come to a point where it all bogs down.
they've barely beaten the Lambs, smoked two of the worst teams in the NFL - giants ( pains me to say it) and stillers.not exactly all word record here.
the trey lance drafting and trading was one of the single worst moves in the history of the NFL. the kid can't play at an NFL level, yet they traded up to get him correct?
I would bet the farm and your wifes car on the niners NOT representing the NFC in the SB. they need to beat the iggles, or cowboys and some others. I don't see the niners as that 'complete' team that no one can beat.

Lombardi:

There are 53 qualifying NFL offensive tackles. PFF pass-block grade ranks so far.:

#1 Trent Williams
#33 Colton McKivitz
#52 Mike McGlinchey

 Broncos for paying McTurnstile to protect Wilson

Glinch was a very good run blocker but the NFL is a passing league and was shocked Denver doled out that kind of money on a RT who is a below average pass blocker.

I could have sworn Dan Quinn was the Falcons head coach that season. Surprised to learn it was Shanahan who controlled the entire team. Kyle really had a bad defensive game plan in the 2nd half of that game. Patriots scored at will in the 2nd half and OT after being shut down the first half. Kyle should have dialed up more blitzes that game. Glad he is sticking to offense these days and isn't the control freak he was in Atlanta when he ran the whole show on both sides of the ball (y)

Per PFF:

49ers defense this season:

💪 79.7% pass-rush win rate

No other NFL team is better than 66.7% 😳
If Kinlaw stays healthy, that will be huge

Love the Ferrell pick-up. Very solid player setting the edge and getting a decent push. Close to having a couple sacks.
I was surprised to see his pass rush win rate was so low, 7.7% (worst on the team). He seems to be very good against the run though.

That is surprising. He has been close to getting a few sacks.
