2024-25 NBA Thread: Mavs fans devastated but Cowboy fans excited to have Luka (7 Viewers)

Sorry, but when I think of all time great players, they can't just keep their team afloat. They should be making deep runs in the playoffs consistently and not missing the playoffs.

Curry is my all time favorite player. I thought he had a real chance to move into the best ever point guard talk and top 8ish player of all time, but these last couple years have put a damper on that IMO.

I hope I am wrong and Warriors make a run this year, but I don't see it. I think it is more likely that they fall into the play-in and miss the playoffs completely then win a first round series against the Lakers or Nuggets.
There are arguments that can be made against Curry being an all-time great player (not that I agree or disagree with them), but yours is a bit simplistic. The only post-merger players I can think of that meet it are Kareem, Magic, and Duncan. Not Michael Jordan, not Shaq, not Kobe, not Isiah Thomas, Larry Bird, or Hakeem. LeBron James has made it out of the first round twice in his 7 years with the Lakers, so I guess he's out, too.

Since Klay Thompson and Durant were hurt in the 18-19 Finals against Toronto, there hasn't been a legit second banana in Golden State outside of Wiggins' tinkerbell season, in which they won another championship. Since Butler arrived they are 11-2 and are a totally different team, with swagger. You should watch more of your favorite player, he's not done. Kareem and Duncan make your list because their teams found another transcendent talent to pick up the slack as they aged, and Magic retired at 31 (Curry turns 37 next week). Maybe the Warriors have found a legit second wind in Jimmy Butler, maybe not. But for that to be the deciding factor in whether Curry is an "all time great" or not seems arbitrary and somewhat capricious, having more to do with circumstance than the talent of the individual player.

If Curry retired at the All-Star break this year, with his recent playoff non-success, I'd agree that his career ended with a whimper, just as it does for most players. I wouldn't agree that that means Jordan et al aren't all time greats, and it shouldn't for Curry, either, especially with his chapters still being written.

Curry is still an all time great, but I think he settles in from 12 to 15 when he retires and after the 22 season he was emerging as a top 10 and maybe the greatest point guard ever. Now 22 looks like a blimp.

Their record since Butler is a mirage (although I hope not) only 4 of those wins are against good teams. They beat the Knicks who are struggling and without KAT, the Pistons, the Bucks without Giannis, and the Rockets.

Am I foolish to think Golden State might also pose some problems in the West or are they an afterthought?
Somewhere in between. Really depends on Steph. If he can stay on/recreate the heater he’s on now, they certainly will be dangerous.

I love the Warriors and follow them closely. I would be surprised if they won a series and stunned if they made any type of noise.

I love Curry and thought he had an argument for greatest PG ever, but these last few years have put a damper on that and need to be held against him.
Wat?

Yeah, I don't know what what msu is watching but Curry has single handedly kept that team afloat. With Jimmy on board and Kuminga coming back I give them a good chance of making a playoff run.

If Curry were 27, that would be one thing. It doesn't seem fair to hold someone in their age 34-37 seasons to that standard IMO.

I would agree if this was the 80's or 90's and we were talking about just really good players. Not all time greats.

why are we even arguing if steph is in the top 10 greatest players of all time or whether he is the greatest point guard ever let me hit you with some stats he is a four time nba champion over a seven year span he is a two time finals mvp he is a two time nba mvp in the joker anteater labron era he is an 11 time nba all star he is a 10 time all nba team member he has won two gold medals in the era where international teams are not pushovers he won the three point contest twice he is a two time scoring champion he is in the 50 40 90 club he was on the nba 75 anniversary team he has been a ap athlete of the year a si sportsman of the year is the all time nba leader in made three pointers is in the top 15 for three point make percentage which is crazy when you consider how many more shots he has than everyone above him and is the all time nba leader in steals and not least of all he is credited with revolutionizing the nba into a three and d league by every metric from honors to impact on the game he is in the top 10 and best ever pg discussion and any reasoning given to the contrary is specious at best and simply hot takery take that to the bank bromigos

Because we still have 20ish games before we have meaningful NBA basketball to talk about.

I don't how anyone can think less of Curry for what he has done in his 35 and 36 year old season. Seems so weird.

Maybe it is my version of hating Tatum!

thats the first thing youve said about this topic that i can understand take that to the bank brohan

Lakers are so banged up they’re going with the near whiteout starting lineup tonight - Luka, Reaves, Knecht, Len, . . . and Vincent. Maxi needs to get healthy asap.

OKC showed why they are the best team in the west. The game was closer than the final score, but OKC really handled Denver outside of the first 6 minutes of the game.
Meh. Give OKC proper due but losing AG midway through the 1st qtr completely changed the complexion of that game. Denver is going nowhere without a healthy starting 5, but otherwise they are even odds with anyone in the West.
Nope
Nuggets split the season series vs. OKC after putting up 140 on their home floor. Hope you enjoyed the game

Sure seems like the Nuggets are getting wide open looks every possession
At their best, Jokic and Murray create gobs of open shots for teammates - partially because they are two of the best tough shot makers in the league so they have no issue hunting for a great shot because they can self create a good shot at any point.

If they are going to compete with OKC/CLE/Bos, they are going to need their mediocre shooters to hit shots at close to a 38% clip (granted they are all WIDE open), and Gordon is gonna have to get healthy. I trust their defense enough to be good enough and I trust the team to create great offense (not necessarily great scoring, but the ability to score 125 pp100 with passable shooting) but they need to have their starters healthy.

While I agree, Curry's resume looks a little strange since he has had only four All-NBA 1st team finishes. That is really low compared to pretty much every other player usually put in the top 15 or so. Voting can be flawed and there is more to it than All-NBA teams, but I am just saying, that is one area where he comes up really short when compared to the others in his all-time tier.

Nuggets are now 13-1 on the second night of a back to back this season. Not sure what that means but it's interesting.

Nope. You should look into this little thing called Vegas for some guidance on the current odds (https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/nba?tab=nba-finals)

Jimmy with a triple double. Amazing how seamlessly he's transitioned there. He's doing so much dirty work that you just don't see guys his age doing. Warriors 12-2 with him.

Golden State also appear to be getting Kuminga back soon too.

I might toss a sawbuck down on GS to win it all when I'm in Vegas this weekend. I know it's probably dumber than lighting the money on fire but I don't know....they look dangerous to me.

Nets doing the worst tank Ive ever seen. Hoping the basketball lotto gods reward their moxie - they are likely going to miss out on the top talent but I love the new coaching staff. Likely top 8 draft pick and a ton of cap space to make some moves/deals......

The 76ers want you to hold their beer.

Can’t believe the Sixers beat the Jazz. Tonight is much more like it.
Frankly the sixers did a pretty amazing job to be up most of the game and then almost lose in the 4th quarter including throwing a long pass into the backcourt while up 2 with 2 seconds left and almost lost the ball out of bounds which would have set up the jazz for a good tying or winning shot

Even for someone choosing to root for the Celtics for some reason, I don’t see why there needs to be rules about who you can and can’t be a fan of. Cheer for who you want to. Life is too short to be miserable. Teams and players aren’t always loyal to each other, why should fans be the only ones locked into things.

I don't think anybody in here is taking this seriously, just some good natured back and forth.

That said, I'm astonished there are fans of teams in cities they've never once stepped foot in before. That seems weird. I am not losing any sleep over it, but that's very peculiar, IMO.
Similarly, I don’t get the individuals who are diehard fans of college teams where they didn’t attend college (eg Alabama).

Come to Georgia - we have grown men who weren’t smart enough to get GEDs that will get down on all fours and bark like a dog. Although, now that I think about it, maybe those are related.

This current stretch is yet another stain on Steph's legacy. What a disappointing player.

For sure, had to get Butler to save him, but seriously I can't believe this 12 - 2 stretch is making people believe in the Warriors again. Their schedule has been ridiculously easy and the four playoff teams they beat only two of them had all their players.

As a Warrior fan I hope I am wrong, but I don't see it.

You realize that the Warriors have not had all their players during this stretch too, right?

Edit to add: Plus, they've been playing multiple G-Leaguers.

Since the Butler trade in the 12- 2 run Curry and Green have played every game, Butler missed one game against the 76ers.

How many games has Kuminga played since acquiring Butler?

Lol, not counting role players. You notice I didn't count Hield either.

How are you defining role players? I don't know a single GSW fan that would consider JK a 'role player'

Cannot believe the great SWCer didn't know what a sawbuck was as that sounds like something our 'ol friend would say quite often as he takes his deposits to the bank.

Cleveland has won 15 games in a row.

For the second time this season.

Wow.
As a Celtics fan, I'm wondering if they will be able to actually beat the Cavs.

If they played a 7 game series starting tomorrow, my prediction would be Cavs in 6. Not seeing any holes in their team, similar to OKC.

Boston always has a shooter's chance but they just aren't as consistent, especially in the defensive end. KP has barely played and Holiday and White aren't as effective as last season. Pritchard is improved and Tatum took another small step forward, but Brown is also inconsistent this season.

Meanwhile the Cavs are steamrolling everyone, even when not at full strength.

I am here with the Cavs this season. They just seem to the magic this year. They kind of remind me of the Celtics that won the title in 08 or 09.

A lot questions coming into the year, but then just steam rolled through the regular season and then won a title. Although the playoffs weren't as easy.

As a lifelong pessimistic Cleveland fan…they will come back to earth. I expect the Celtics to handle them quite easily. I hope I’m wrong, but these are my true feelings! I love what the new coach, Kenny Atkinson has brought to the team though. He is a breath of fresh air!!!

You have an NBA title just a few years ago! Not many teams in the NBA can say that.

Talk to the fans of Twolves, Magic, Bobcat, Kings, Pelicans, etc etc about being pessimistic, disappointed and wishing they had a parade in their city while we could all legally drink.
