2024 Cleveland Browns - 2-6, Rollin' With Wildcard Winston (2 Viewers)

roughly how much cap do they need to sign their draft class?

i'm guessing not much, especially considering the lack of a 1st round pick.

two more DTs, these two sound like dart throws, but Berry does occasionally hit on these signings

I am not moved by either Maurice Hurst or Trysten Hill. Both have had massive injury issues. Fine to create some camp competition. At best they are guys who fight to be the one who ends up getting 150 snaps for the year. They still need another serious DT of some kind.

I mean, I like the fact the Browns are finally addressing their defensive interior. Desperately needed after the last two years. But Maurice Hurst and Trysten Hill are basically lottery tickets. Very similar to last year's Taven Bryan addition.

Okay. So, last year the defense was overly complicated on the back end & unable to stop the run. In theory, changes have been made to fix those problems. O-line looks great. The running game should continue to excel. The passing game should improve. What is it that my rose-colored glasses are obscuring?

I am hopeful that Winfrey turns out to be that guy. He seems to fit Schwartz's attacking scheme.

ETA: Calais Campbell is a FA. Just sayin'.

i think they have done a nice job so far this off season, but here's a few things i hear a lot of people still have concerns about on this team:

depth - i actually agree with this one. i think on paper, the Browns have a nice team, but they appear pretty shallow
WR - general feeling is that they need at least one more WR, preferably someone with deep speed to open up defenses.
LB - lot's of guys (if they bring them back) coming back from injury
S - depth?
CB - do they have a true nickel corner?
DE - do they have a true bookend to Garrett?
DT - do they have enough players to stop the run?
RB - is Ford good enough to back up Chubb? they went from having a lot of RB depth to not much at all.
QB - who's the backup?

no team is perfect, but they do have plenty of holes. hopefully they do better than last year, and they can keep adding pieces next off season.

Love Jack Duffin's work. He's been on top of just about every move the Browns have made.
Nice breakdown of some of the free agent moves made.
I highlighted the name I'm most interested in.

In the 2023 NFL if your biggest problem is depth then you're in good shape.

Some think we're fine, others think we're not doing enough.

The only reason G Bush is saying all of this is because he openly despises Stefanski. If it wasn't him, he'd be all about it.

they were running down the WRs this morning on 92.3

Cooper - WR1 Safe
DPJ - slots as WR2 right now, getting better every year, Safe
Bell - would've liked more out of him his rookie year, but showed some signs of life, Safe
Jakeem Grant - Injured for 2022, they're bringing him back to be the return guy, Safe

that's 4 slots, leaving probably two left?

Woods - drafted in the 6th round last year, they probably want to see what they have in him
Schwartz - i would have to assume they're pulling the plug on this experiment, just can't seem to catch a football

there's a couple other guys on the roster i don't know much about.

is there room for a true #2, or a guy to fill the role Schwartz was drafted for?

sure there is, but i don't know if the Browns have the inclination or money to make a whole lot happen here.

I was listening to that and it's amazing how they can slam this line up out of one side of their mouth and then say this with confidence in the WR room out of the other. There is nothing about that line up that strikes any kind of fear into me if I'm going up against the Browns. They're serviceable but they won't all stay healthy this year so if Cooper is out significant time, how confident are you on someone from that roster is stepping up to WR1? I can tell you my level is a little above zero. Depth in the draft is fine but how many WR's make that first year jump into a serviceable WR? Bell didn't. Think we could use another veteran in the room but I don't know where he's coming from.

personally, do i have a ton of confidence in this WR group?

not really. i do think it has the potential to be a good group, (DPJ continues to get better, and i think Bell could still be a good possession receiver) but this is the same GM that kept thinking Schwartz was going to develop.

when you add in the TEs and the RBs, i do think the offense as a whole has enough weapons to survive the loss of Cooper, but losing your #1 WR is a tall task for any team.

i will add though, when you construct a roster, unless you're really good at drafting, you just can't be strong in every position group.

imo, the point of having a franchise QB is that he is able to elevate the play of the WRs.

so i'm not really going to pound the table and demand they spend more resources on receivers, even if i'm not completely sold on the guys they have.

Pete Smith
@_PeteSmith_
I'm gonna keep saying this. Other than the Dolphins, the Browns are the only team with 2 WRs in the top 25 for yards per reception and explosive plays.
Pete Smith@_PeteSmith_
Would a good, explosive WR be helpful? Absolutely. But to suggest Amari Cooper and DPJ are slow is wildly ignorant.
Pete Smith@_PeteSmith_
How many times did Jacoby Brissett short arm deep balls to these two?
-----------------------------------
DPJ - 4.48 forty
Amari Cooper - 4.42 forty

https://dawgpounddaily.com/posts/mecole-hardman-good-fit-cleveland-browns

my guess is that he's going to end up costing too much for the Browns to get him.

i was seeing much higher numbers.

sure, bring him in.

i want the Browns to succeed this year. i don't want to watch this thing get blown up again.

That's fair and I expect Watson to be more of what we expected we were getting than what we saw last year.

is there room for a true #2?
No.
or a guy to fill the role Schwartz was drafted for?
Yes.

It's all about cost though. I suspect they have a list of pre-draft acquisition targets with corresponding price tags. They're working through that list right now. I am sure Mecole Hardman is on it just like Parris Campbell was, but the number is something less than the $4.7m the latter signed for. If they don't get any bites pre-draft then they'll reassess the market once on the other side and out of the comp pick formula window. Whoever is brought in will be acquired to do a role similar to the one Schwartz can't.

At this point I'm not sure I can be convinced that AB had anyone's name but Nico Collins on that draft card then he panic picked Schwartz after he got sniped and didn't have any trading options.

I'm starting to sour on Jed Wills. Anybody think they should use resources to draft a replacement?

The Browns also signed a pair of special-teamers, giving one-year deals to linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk and cornerback Mike Ford.

You can scrap everyone after Amari Cooper
Elijah Moore just ascended to WR 2 on this team and I expect him to elevate past Cooper quickly.
#34 overall pick, was being held back in New York
2nd chances on rookie deals to prove themselves, doesn't happen often and he's landed into an ideal spot for where he's at right now.
And he has the next 5 months to get the timing down with Watson, excellent move for Cleveland

Moore was the #1 trade target in this article from a few days ago.

after hearing all the Jerry Jeudy talk around town the last few days, i'm a bit relieved to hear they went with Moore.

the price certainly seems more reasonable, and they have him on rookie salary for two years.

what really happened with Moore in New York anyway?

I would say crappy QB, and a superior talent in Wilson pushed him down the pecking order. He needed a new start and got it.

i don't know how to quote twitter, but in an article they quoted some dude:

"The Browns are who you call when you want to lose a WR trade."

i hope that's true.

Don't know what happened to Moore in NY, I liked him coming out. Saw this tweet from Ocho Cinco.
Says Moore is an excellent route runner which is something I did not know but that is good.
I believe Chad Johnson and OBR film backs his take.

Moore can really snap off routes well. You can see the elite agility. Watch him widen on release, climb vertically here, & attack Ward's blindspot. This was all over his Ole Miss tape. They have to unlock him. Tools are there. #Browns Moore(aye) to come @TheOBR tomorrow 1f4fd.png

Put Amari in the slot and kill people. Mix in DPJ for a great blocking WR who can do some tendency-breaking routes. Moore is your Z for a large % of snaps. Simple enough.
-They had this man in the slot running throwaway fly/jet/orbit motions. All while he was getting open on so many routes at Z. This is wild. Easy firing of MikeLaFluer. But these QBs are bad.

Moore was not overly productive but check out some tape from Jake Burns

"Alright, let's check and see some of Moore's 2022 targets. Ah, little orbit motion thro.....oh.....welp, that adds up."

You really have to consume the games in their entirety to see how many times this guy is missed in an offense so poorly run. This play design/result is laugh-out-loud funny. Roll into nothing and throw it into the stands. CB (27) he's up against there is a good player as well.

It wouldn't surprise me to find out they were in conversations about swapping draft positions prior to the Hardman signing & this fell into their laps.

What did Elijah Moore cost the #Browns?
Using the Fitzgerald-Spielberger Trade Chart (Analytics) 42 - 1106 74 - 819
So effectively given up pick 211 for Moore
Using Jimmy Johnson Trade Chart (Old School 42 - 480 74 - 220
So effectively given up pick 66

Moore has 6 career games of 60+ yards and 5 of them came with a QB other than Zach Wilson.
5 of his 6 career TDs came from a QB other than Wilson.
I knew his splits were pretty stark but my God did Wilson hold him back.

heard a quick snippet today that the Browns were trying to get Moore at the trade deadline last season.

they must really like Moore and/or really think the Jets don't know what they're doing.

i know some people have been complaining about giving up the 42nd pick, but this has the potential to be a very good trade.

He wins where DPJ doesn't. They'll compliment each other well.

No idea what we can/will do in the draft but this is 'supposed' to be a deep RB class and we 'appear' thin after Chubb so...
