2024 Cleveland Browns - 3-9, Winston Throws 6 TDs in Denver (2 Viewers)

He should be cut/banned instantly if any of that is true. Congrats to Deshaun Watson, you are no longer the worst person on the Browns.
Agree, I just read the police report details, he's a POS if true. You can find the details if you like, Daryl Ruiter posted them on the Audacy website.
He shouldn't play a down in the NFL, and probably shouldn't be in society. Whether its prison or a psych ward. This is not a person who should be on the street.

Not that draft value is the issue, but Hall was such an obvious horrible pick in round 2. Many teams were said to have had him off the board completely due to massive character issues, both on and off field.

1st I heard of this as roto has nothing on it

Cooper encountered some discomfort while participating in a joint practice session against the Minnesota Vikings. After receiving a short pass from Deshaun Watson, the 30-year-old NFL veteran landed awkwardly on the ground and could be heard yelling in pain, as per Fox 8 News. Amari Cooper continued to indulge in plays for some time before exiting the field with a trainer due to his unspecified injury.

how far has this team come that there is zero interest in preseason anymore?
Nice to not be worried about the D. I had interest in seeing Watson / Jeudy play behind the first team OL, but the big uglies weren't healthy. I'll be hyper focused on that group early week 1.

Glad Chubb's out til October. I like our chances of going 3-2 with or without him. Ease him in when the schedule tightens then reassess over the bye.

Side note - I know some of you listen to 92.3, did Dustin Fox get the boot? Hasn't been on for weeks. Don't really care for him or Nick, just curious.
He left
Even with my comments above I encourage anyone who has listened in the past to go back to yesterdays show around 5pm and listen to Dustin's announcement. Some of the best radio he's ever done, wish him well & much happiness.

Browns restructure Deshaun Watson's deal, create cap space

The Cleveland Browns have restructured quarterback Deshaun Watson's contract, a league source told ESPN's Field Yates, in a move that creates $35.832 million in salary cap space.

Cleveland converted $44.79 million of Watson's $46 million 2024 base salary into a signing bonus, the source told Yates. The move gives the Browns more than $62 million in cap space, the most in the NFL.

Soooo...who we getting?

Not necessarily anyone. Creates flexibility for a deadline move, but if there isn't one roll it over like we've done the last several years.

Remember when the lemmings thought this was a ploy to dodge his suspension? What a buncha rubes.

Pull the plug before it's too late

What do you think Browns fans?

Watson looks completely broken. Regardless of the OL.
He carries $120m of dead cap if cut.

Would you keep Watson if you ran the team?
Browns have $49m in cap space right now, projected $66m under water next yr, and $22m under the yr after. Math says this is a bad question.

I write this understanding the audience, but it does not appear you understand how the salary cap works.

maybe the Browns needed to get thoroughly crushed in week 1 so they understand where they are at and what work needs to be done.

everything we've heard over the last few months is that they were not putting the work in, and it sure showed against Dallas.

i'm not ready to bury this team, but they need to get serious about this season in a hurry.

Need these guys to line Huntington field.

If you weren't serious about the season in the offseason . . . it's already too late.

This isn't about me or what I understand. But thank you. This is about asking a question as to what folks would do.

The Browns article I linked to suggests pulling the plug and dealing with the cap disaster is the best course.

I asked folks here what they would do with Watson if they ran the team,

Maybe others will have an answer there.

That's a fair point.

I do wonder how they're seeing this game vs what they saw this summer.

Dallas is very good. And obviously they had OL problems.

But this looked like a guy ready to bail yesterday.

Given the amount of money involved and the ramifications of pulling the plug I think you have to give him the year unless it just becomes apparent that the Watson we saw yesterday is all that is left of the once dominate QB. If he doesn't turn it around, it's a lost season no matter what you do, Joe Flacco isn't coming through the door to save the season.

And if you do nuke the contract, it's going to be a lot of lost seasons coming up until they get out from under it. I think if you do that, you lose some vets as well. Ain't nobody gonna want to play on this team.

I do wonder how they're seeing this game vs what they saw this summer.
Well see that's part of the problem, we didn't see him all summer. To me these next few games are essentially Watson's preseason. He hasn't seen live action in a lotta months.

Yes. I mean though what they saw of him at the facility. I guessing that was plenty to have them thinking.

And then maybe yesterday confirmed their worst fears.

But for sure, that's just me speculating.

Yea it was all rainbows & puppy dogs up until yesterday. As Cleveland fans I think we are numb to a lot of stuff most fanbases aren't accustomed to. All I heard was Watson was making all the throws in practice, they were keeping him on a schedule so his practice was limited, didn't play a snap in the pre-season so we didn't have any real idea of what to expect other than what we were being told by media.

Hope isn't a strategy but I can't imagine the folks in Berea have much else to hang their hats on today. Yea, the OL was really bad, the penalties were just ridiculous but even when Watson had a clean pocket, he was holding the ball 4-5 seconds then tucking it and taking off. Seems like he wasn't reading the field at all, the game was 2 steps quicker for him, whatever. He wasn't good and the only way it's going to get better is if he gets reps with the offense. Hopefully (there it is again) that fixes it and we get some semblance of the QB we thought we were getting. If it doesn't, we're right back to same old Cleveland Browns with a really good defensive lineman.

What you don't appear to be understanding is they literally cannot do what you're asking. No restructures of other contracts can create the space to cut him in 2024. Would need to trade several vets in front of the deadline to begin to potentially entertain it and if that's the play then deferral to March 2025 would be optimal so there are more players in the market.

This season is what it is- more of what we saw yesterday and there will be a lot of hurt but not injured players on ir come late fall, Watson included.

That sounds a lot like the issues Carson Wentz had at the end of his tenure in Philly. Unfortunately, they never got fixed.

Thanks. You're closer to it than me but I had a different vibe than rainbows and happiness. I sensed some dread this summer.

Again, I'm not as close as you, but this felt like yesterday was confirmation of the things they were worried about.

On the upside, it's Dallas and they had terrible OL issues. But this looks ugly.

I'd say that because I am a fan doesn't necessarily put me closer to it. A guy like @MAC_32 who is literally there is probably a better source, I'm just chatty ;)

I listen to Cleveland sports talk radio all day so my rainbows mostly come from what they put out. The local media isn't anything close to tough on the team so we rarely hear anything more than coach speak. From what I saw yesterday, Watson's should is good, he had some zip on the ball, tossed a few downfield and can still run downfield when necessary. What he didn't have was pocket presence (serious happy feet), the ability to read defenses, picking up the speed of the game along with bad OL play, made for a long day for the offense. All of that is correctable with reps and time under fire. Unfortunately that's going to have to occur in September not August. Add in that I don't expect him to play a full season (meaning I think he will have some type of injury that keeps him out) so the amount of games he can have a significant impact is around 10-11 games. He's going to have to be some semblance of a real NFL QB in all of those games as opposed to what we saw yesterday.

Pull the plug before it's too late

What do you think Browns fans?

Watson looks completely broken. Regardless of the OL.
I so badly want to pull the plug. I'd like to think if I ran the team, I would have never made this move for Watson in the first place. "Hey look, here is a guy who doesn't want to play here and is loaded with off the field issues. Let's throw so much money at him he can't possibly say no." Not a wise decision. But now that the investment has been made, I think I would have no choice but to ride it out. What is the alternative? It is not like we are stacked behind him. Winston? DTR? They aren't the answer either. Call on a guy like Tannehill? That would be a better option than what is in the bullpen, IMO. I keep telling myself, it is one game. But it was so embarrassingly bad that it almost feels like the season is shot. But, as I said, given the current state of affairs, I think we got to ride him out for a while and hopefully he stays healthy and we find some rhythm. Whether we pull the plug or not, this acquisition is going to sting for a long time.

On a related note, as bad as Watson was/is, the coaches need to shoulder significant blame for this opener. I am a fan of Stefanski. Not a fan of Dorsey, nor the thinking that landed him here. And I sorely miss Callahan.

To @MAC_32 's point above, there really isn't a way out of this so we're stuck with Watson on the roster for at least two more years. Whether he plays or not is a different story but given the cap constraints associated with Watson, who are going to bring in? You're not. So we have to make the best of this. I don't get the impression that Watson is going to Dwayne Bowe this thing but there isn't a lot we could do about it if he did.

I didn't understand the Dorsey hire or letting Van Pelt go but whatever, as long as Stefanski is calling the plays I don't know how much input those guys have anyhow. Callahan was a huge loss but I don't think any amount of money was going to keep him here. He could definitely make lemonade out of lemons.

Well…don’t be so sure about that…

Look at the 2nd to last paragraph of that article…

This new case raises plenty of issues, from the standpoint of the league and the Browns. It’s possible that Watson could be subject to further scrutiny under the Personal Conduct Policy. It’s also possible that a suspension — if one is imposed — could give the Browns a path toward voiding his remaining salary guarantees and ending the relationship.

i guess i really shouldn't be surprised.

i don't know what to say.

i think it's too optimistic to entertain thoughts of getting out of that contract, but maybe if he ended up on the Commissioner's Exempt list, we could start daydreaming...
