2024 IDP Weekly News (1 Viewer)

I didn't really know where we should be putting a running observation/news/etc thread. I am thinking we can use this to post any useful information that you noticed in games each week. I could change the title each week or we can just use it as is and know that it's a living/breathing thread that goes on as the season goes on.

Here are a few of my ponderings after week 2:
  • Patrick Queen: WTF is happening here. After two weeks he has 5 solo tackles and doesn't really seem to be around the ball much. He is flowing late and seems to be a bit deeper causing him to not be involved in the plays. I was expecting much more and wonder if it is a function of the defensive scheme and that he just isn't going to be much of an IDP asset moving forward. Anyone have any differing opinion or is he someone we should try and sell on name recognition for a lesser known name that is performing (Baun, Cashman, Dodson, etc)?
  • Mosley: Hurt in the game and Sherwood came in with 8 tackles. Is there something to see here? I didn't see any of the game so I am not sure if this is a fluke or Sherwood is a target to pick up while Mosley is out. Anybody with any info?
  • Bernard: Pec injury. Doesn't appear to be season ending but should miss some time. Spector came in for Bernard. With all the Buf injuries is he worth an add? He had 7 solos and 3 assists. Seems like he might be of service as a stop gap. Thoughts?
  • Dennis: I know he didn't have the snap count week 1 and haven't seen what he was at in week 2 but the time I was watching the TB game this week he was all over the place. 6 solos and 5 assists this week to go with 5 solos and a sack in week 1. Looks to be coming on.
  • Buckner (DT): Ankle injury. Could be a big blow to Indy (and my team for sure). Indy is getting run on like they aren't even there. Might be good for Franklin and Speed with more tackle opps.
  • Gardeck: Anything to see here? Was this just a fluke game with 6 tackles and 3 sacks after nothing in week 1.
  • Keion White: Guy is on fire. I think the cat is out of the bag. If he is available go get him.
  • Patrick Jones (Min): 4 sacks in two games. Situational pass rusher but is making the most of his opps. Not sure if I want to waste a roster spot on him but if you are thin and need someone he seems to be getting the job done.
  • Van Ginkel: If you want a Vikes DL here is where I would go if he was still available. He seems to thrive in Flores system and is all over the place.
  • Julian Love: Not a surprise here but two huge weeks. Tough not to buy in at this point.
  • Derwin James: WTF is going on here. Is the Harbaugh defense scheme the issue? No big plays, seems to be deep, isn't really blitzing (from what I have seen). Is it time to worry? I wonder if you could make a move of James for Love and go on name recognition. Thoughts?
  • Muasau: Inactive with McFadden back healthy. Big splash week 1 to the bench week 2. A name to watch for the future in dynasty leagues but probably needs an injury to be worthwhile this year.
  • Cashman: All over the place yesterday. He is the green dot and putting up numbers. Probably a must start with the way the Vikes are playing right now. 5 solos, 8 assists, a sack and 3 PD. Don't be fooled by his week 1 stats as he sat once the game was out of hand. He is a must start at this point. I am going to start him over Queen at this point.

Anybody have any other observations?

Bentley out for the year in NE. There might be a pickup to be made here.

LB that gets a lot of work on bad teams are always kind of gold for me. Raekwon McMillan has the job, he's worth a pick up for sure. will probably be a two down guy.

But they signed Takitaki to a 2 year deal, he's on the PUP. I could see him beating out McMillan.

Queen, and the Steelers, havent played against much offense yet. I think this might be a good week for him vs LAC, and shutting up all the Dobbins talk. If not, maybe time to move on. Steelers never rely on 1 guy to make all the tackles. They have 8-9 dogs on that defense, and they spread the tackles around.
Mosley(toe) sounds like maybe a week. Might play TNF this week. Sherwood isnt new, there is a reason he doesnt start.
I think I am moving on from Britt and taking a shot with Dennis.

I would agree for week 1 but this week I was watching a little closer and for whatever reason (scheme maybe), Queen just wasn't around the ball at all. He was always late to the pile or not even close. There were plenty of dump offs in the middle of the field and he was nowhere to be seen. It was really disappointing to watch.

I agree this week should be a solid matchup for IDP purposes so I will give it another week. I am thinking of offering Queen and Chase Brown up for Pacheco in my dynasty league to the Steeler fan.

I'm a steeler fan in dynasty league(not with IDP tho), and wouldnt take that deal. I like Pacheco tho, the other guy might not as much.
But def hang onto Queen for 1 more week, at least.

Queen was more visible yesterday, and probably would have had a few more tackles had the Steelers just not completely shut down LAC in the 2nd half. They never had the ball, and when they did, got sacked. He should have another week at Indy to prove himself IDP worthy.

While he was better he was still late to the party quite a bit. I wonder if the DL is just too good and his opportunities will just be too limited for IDP success. He is playing well for NFL but not helping for IDP.

Some week 2 observations:
  • Oluokun: Foot injury and it seems he may be out for a few weeks. Does this mean Muma gets a shot or is there a different play? Lloyd probably becomes an every week starter now for IDP but who else? Ventrell Miller (44% snaps) to Muma's (42%). Not sure if there is anything to see here other than Lloyd
  • Paye: Quad injury and it didn't look great. No timeline yet but probably be out this week at a minimum. Latu (39%) and Odeyingbo (69%) could be spot starts while he is out.
  • Highsmith: Groin injury needing an MRI. Same injury he had in preseason. It's Nick Herbig time. Go get him now if you need DL help. Had two sacks and a FF. Playing oppo Watt will get singled and has the skills to produce.
  • Spector: Filling in for Bernard put up 6 tackles (3 solos) but only played 80% of the snaps. Was this a function of the blowout or is he just a 2 down guy?
  • Vikes DL: Van Ginkel (61%) and Greenard (69%) are the guys to play as they get the most snaps. Patrick Jones (49% as usual) fell back to earth a bit with only 1 tackle (but it was a TFL) and 1 QBH. I just don't think his play time is worth it at the moment but an injury to Greenard or AVG could change that.
  • Queen: I am still worried about him. He had his best statistical game with 8 tackles (4 solo) and PD but expectations are much higher.
  • Cashman: Really disappointing after last week. Only 4 tackles (2 solo) but could it be a function of the game script as Vikes blew out Houston? Not sure as week one he had 6 tackles (4 solo) and nothing else. Could just be the nature of the beast.
  • Myles Garrett: Only had 1 solo but had 3 QB hits (another reason to have that as a scoring category for IDP) so he was putting pressure. But a season low 59% of snaps so I wonder if his feet issues are going to slow him down for the foreseable future.
  • Leonard Williams/Byron Murphy: Both went out with a injuries. Williams only played 5 snaps and injured his ribs. Murphy with 12 snaps with a hammy. Reed and Dre'mont Jones may get some additional looks and could be ok for DT required leagues.
  • Devonte Wyatt: 3 sacks over last two games. With the way GB is playing he might we worth a look in DT leagues.
  • Raekwon McMillan: Filling in for Bently and put up 10 tackles (6 solo) on 73% of snaps. Worth a pickup if he is still out there.
  • Sherwood: Filling in for Mosely with 5 tackles (4 solos) on 98% of the snaps. Good volume for snaps but would have liked to see more production, although NE was pretty terrible on offense so not many chances. As long as Mosely is out he is worth rostering and spot start in good matchups.
Any other things stick out for anybody else?

These players stand out as FAs in one of my leagues.

He played because Ivan Pace was out. He will be ok as long as Pace is out but not much value once he is back.

DT Labryan Ray Car 3T 2 sacks
DT Jayden Perry Car 2T 1 sack
With Brown out for the year one of these guys may be in line for a decent year. Peevy played 42% of snaps and Labryan Ray isn't listed in the FBG snap counts. Not sure what happened with that.

Ray played the other 58%

Also David Long Jr left with a hammy. No practice report because they play Monday, but I am throwing a dart at Anthony Walker ina league I am desperate

Either of these guys (Cunningham or Alexander) worth a dart throw?
I say no. These guys get signed any time someone has an LB injury, and they never turn into startable IDPs. Strnad is a better dart assuming Barton is already rostered.
I would agree for the most part but if your league is big and starting Lb's just aren't available it is probably worth a gamble just in case. You will know quickly if it is worthwhile so you can churn them if they don't pan out. But this would be for leagues where you are desperate for LB's.

Mia --David Long doubtful : Grab Anthony Walker if you need help. Fantastic match-up on paper. Walker wore the dot when Long went out last week.

Den -- Singleton IR : Barton getting first crack at calling the plays. Strnad and Welch may both get time and who knows what happens. Kwon and Zach, one or both could be elevated.

Jac -- Oluokun IR / Lloyd Q : If Lloyd misses game, Muma and Miller will be very busy

NO -- Davis Out : Werner was a hair short of 100% snaps last week and should be the guy. Gay's snaps should skyrocket here as well

GB -- McDuffie losing snaps to Cooper in the nickel. IMO its only a matter of time before Cooper is taking much more. He is the best LB they have. Just needs time....

SF -- De'Vondre Campbell : Was beginning to lose snaps to Dee Winters last week until Winters was injured (only 11 to 12 snaps). Winters is back at practice so keep an eye on this. I think they have had it with De'Vondre. If Winters doesn't go, keep an eye on rookie Bethune (he was inactive last week, not sure about this week). Guy was really good during the preseason. If Winters is healthy and gets snaps.... he plays on fire.

Tillman was the one that got extra snaps last week when Singleton went down

Tillman's snaps had nothing to do with Singleton

Singleton hurt his knee early in the game but said it felt a little sore. Singleton did not go down. He went and played every snap in the game on a torn ACL. He found out later after the game the bad news. Man of Steel? Amazing he played most of the game with that injury.

Tillman is a 270lb defensive lineman labelled as an OLB. His designation should really be DE. He rotated in with Cooper, Elliss and Bonitto as an edge rusher, DE. He was activated off the practice squad on Sept 18th

The unfortunate thing about him is he is a LB on most fantasy sites. After that game we will most likely see alot more of him

I think I am out on Queen. He just doesn't seem to be around the ball and isn't getting tackles. I am going to try and move him on name recognition.

Yeah, I was noticing the rankings on Queen and Nakobe Dean rest of season... they're the same guy so far this season, not sure why one is top 20 and the other is an LB5.

What's everyone doing with White? Healthy scratch and missed last game for personal reasons. Very little information what that was all about and then he's released.

Hang on to him or cut our losses and move on (Dynasty)? :ponder:

Depends on what you are cutting him for. He is still young but seems to have fallen off drastically. I would hold for now and see what happens in the short term to see if he catches on somewhere. But if there is a high ceiling guy that you want to pick up I don't have an issue dropping him. It just has to be for something worthwhile.

Putting the puzzle pieces together over the last couple years, he's never grasped the mental part of the game and his physical skill is not enough to overcome. Put him next to a vet in a complimentary role and maybe he can be useful in the NFL, but without a full time snap share he's not an attractive play in our game.

Some of my observations for this past week:
  • Sherwood (NYJ): Put up another solid outing (7 solos/6 assists) and is wearing the green dot. Mosley was back but only logged 9 plays. Did he get reinjured or was he just not able to go or was Sherwood playing good enough he wasn't needed? As long as Mosely is out or dinged Sherwood looks like an every week starter
  • Wallace (Car): Solid outing (6 solos/3 assists/FF/FR) and wearing the green dot. Jewell was still out so not sure if he retains the green dot when Jewell comes back. From what I saw he was flowing to the ball ok but seemed to be waiting for things to get to him rather than attacking forward. Most tackles were after 3 or 4 yard gains. Not great for real football but tackles are tackles for IDP.
  • Queen (Pit): Finally put up some numbers (6 solos/7 assists/ 1 TFL). Where has this been all season? Oh yeah, I traded him this week so now he will put up 15+ tackles a game for the rest of the year. Ugh. Not sure if this was an anomaly or what as I didn't watch much of this game. Any body see if anything was different for him this week?
  • Will Anderson (Hou): Three sacks and six tackles. Is this the start of something? I think so. Hunter also got into the sack column so maybe these guys are heating up or it could have just been the Patriots.
  • Alim McNeil (Det): DT that I have always liked and done well when healthy. Comes up big with a couple sacks and with Hutchinson's injury maybe he can step up for the LIons. I would go get him in DT leagues.
  • Ojulari (NYG): A couple sacks with Thibs out. He has always put hte pressure on QB's when healthy but has struggled to stay healthy. He played over 70% of the snaps (high for the year) so this may just be the start of things. I would add him if you need DL help. He is likely on your waivers.
  • Winfield (TB): He's back. If someone dropped him go get him.
  • Moehrig (LV): Seems to be the guy playing in the box the last couple weeks. Pola-Mao seemed to be the box safety when he splashed on the scene but since that first week he seems to be more the deep safety. Might be time to pick up Moehrig if available.
  • Allen (Was): I touched on it in a post above but with the pec injury and being done for the year it might be time that Jer'Zahn Newton starts to shine. He got 54% of the snaps this week when Allen went down in the first half. He only had a tackle and couple assists but he should come around.
  • Hutchinson (Det): Sad news and I am sure everyone is aware that Hutch is likley done of the year. But who is going to step up in his place. I mentioned McNeil above but on the edge will Paschal finally step up or will Ukwu? Flip a coin and hope one hits. Someone is going to get a boost going forward. I probably lean Paschal myself.

Feel free to add on if you have any thoughts.

Apparently Cashman developed turf toe on his vacation week and is unlikely to play this week. Ugh. Pace and Grugier Hill may be playable vs the Lions.

Now it sounds like EJ Speed didn't practice with a knee injury today. Fire up Olubi if Speed misses time.

Man, brutal week for my IDP rosters.
I am right there with you. Potentially losing Speed, Cashman and now Bernard has a Q next to his name. Also already lost Wilkins, Buckner, and now Jonathan Allen. I have never had this many IDP side injuries. Just crazy.

What are people's thoughts on Moehrig vs Pala-Mao. I picked up Palo-Mao as he appeared to be the box guy but now Moehrig has been there the last couple weeks. I am leaning Moehrig. Any thoughts?

Yup, it's Moehrig now - Macri had a note about him in a recent podcast, and the box snaps have shifted to him.

Edit: I might be wrong on the source there - it could have been an FBG article instead.

I know the Davenport Studs and Duds for this week is touting Palo-Mao as a "stud" this week citing his first game production and doesn't mention Moehrig. But from what I have seen the last couple weeks Palo-Mao has been deep with Moehrig in the box. I made the move today and picked up Moehrig and dropped Palo-Mao

I dropped Palo-Mao after seeing blurbs on Moehrig getting the premium snaps. So we all know that means Palo-Mao is the right guy to have. lol

Also a note on Gally's mention of "Will Anderson (Hou): Three sacks and six tackles. Is this the start of something? I think so. Hunter also got into the sack column so maybe these guys are heating up or it could have just been the Patriots." .... the Pats oline is absolutely terrible. Anderson is likely that good but he (and all IDPs) get a ton of help from a NE matchup.

Those Texans DEs had good underlying numbers if I recall correctly. They could heat up.

Carlies is interesting

Looks like Carlies and Olubi both were involved. Carlies had 5 solos and a sack while Olubi had 2 solos/3 assists a FF and a FR. I haven't seen the snap percentages yet and I didn't watch much of the game to see how they were used but they both had decent IDP days overall.

I did see this blurb regarding Carlies yesterday....

(Rotowire) Carlies is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Dolphins due to a calf injury, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports.
Analysis: Carlies got the start at linebacker for the injured E.J. Speed (knee), but the former was forced to leave Sunday's contest after injuring his calf. Grant Stuard and Liam Anderson should see additional snaps at linebacker alongside starters Zaire Franklin and Segun Olubi while Carlies is sidelined.

WTF....Grant Stuard had 11 solos and 8 assists. Where did this guy come from and was this just some weird fluke situation?

LOL. I picked him up in the offseason because of the SI story about him. I liked his character. Figured if he ever got a shot he'd run with it. Thus is the state of ILB in the NFL.

I dropped him a day after I picked him up, BTW. "Nothing but a good story," I thought. But even lesser players will rack up tackle numbers if so motivated to stay in the NFL (especially if they can cover a lick, which they usually can't).

eta* Might have been an Athletic/NYT story. If so, I'd encourage people to read it. Maybe pick him up on a flier if the situation warrants. Sounds like he wants to stick in the NFL.
