**2024 New York Jets official thread** - End of the Rodgers error...era (9 Viewers)

So far best realistic option I can see is Flores/Josh McCown combo. Hoping a better option jumps out in the next few weeks but at least that pairing would have upside potential
Agreed - I would like this combo quite a bit.
Jets have requested to interview McCown for the HC position.
That I’m not happy about - hasn’t even been an OC yet.
It is possible they’re “really “ interviewing him for the OC - if they are considering Flores.

The Jets are looking towards the TV for help in their organization
Let me get this straight because I'm slightly behind here but Mike Tannenbaum has been summoned to help the Jets? The same guy they fired?
I speak from personal experience when he came to Miami, he's terrible! There's a reason he draws a paycheck at ESPN-Disney these days vs the NFL
And Mike wants to hire Rex Ryan, are they serious? Ryan has 2 AFCC appearances under his belt with the Jets which is much better than most who have passed thru there
That guy's days are over in the NFL. You can hear him on TV, he's openly campaigned for other jobs in the NFL in years past and nobody would hire him so why now? And why the Jets?

I'm dumbfounded when I hear this stuff
You all must have some spin on all of this

Guys, for the last time. We know the organization is terrible. We have no inside scoop. We’re just fans. We have no control over what is going on with this joke of an organization. None of us chose this when we were growing up. It evolved that way.
Rock, some folks just like to come in and pour gasoline on the fire. I've learned to just ignore those that want to kick fans when they're down.

Yep.

By the way, these new "thumbs up” things? Don’t like them. They’re kinda . . . weird. The blue likes were nice and aesthetically pleasing. A thumb up the bum? Not so much.
This whole board looks off kilter, did they do an "upgrade"?

I’m guessing so. The menu at the top of the page is tiny.

Looks like you also can't see others that are currently in a thread.

I'm as much of a Fonzie fan as the next guy, but yeah, that "sit on it" thumbs up is a bit overwhelming.

Thats my guess as well - with the O doing so well in Minny he's not going to get the OC job - this would be a promotion. Cant see him getting a HC job without a stint as OC. I do like him tho.

I could see Rodgers working under Flores but I can’t see Rodgers respecting McCown at all.

Did you see Fitzpatrick's take on Flores? Sounds like he might have trouble putting a staff together.
I take that with a grain of salt - Miami was a mess at the end. Ownership was all over Flores to tank and he fought back...power struggle probably led to a lot of dysfunction. Jets are dysfunctional but at least they dont tank - they love to win meaningless games lol!

From what Ive read Flores is loved in Minny and Im sure many coaches think he got a raw deal. Im not concerned about his staff - especially if he can bring McCown!

Mike Tannenbaum is a founder of 33rd Team - a football think tank/consulting service and the Jets have retained 33rd Team to help with their GM and Coaching search. Many teams hire outside consultants for this process.

Yes, they are interviewing Rex Ryan today who has been begging for the job weekly on ESPN and in interviews. Personally I want no part of Rex but it doesn't hurt to interview him, even if its just to get his perspective and to see what they may be doing wrong.

Jets are a dumpster fire under Woody - but these two things are really not throwing anymore grease on the fire - unless they do hire Rex (then it may switch from dumpster fire to clown show).

Rex is their biggest fan - never hurts to keep good relations with him. I also doubt they hire him but Im a fan of interviewing everyone as theyve been doing.

We don’t have enough space (10K character limit) to delineate all the reasons Mike Tannenbaum as the Jets consultant is bad process, but thanks for that tidbit. Knowing the former Jets GM who hired Rex the first time is their outside consultant helps everyone understand why his name has been thrown in the ring.

All he/his firm is doing is making suggestions on who to interview. The Jets greatest success in the last 40 years was a result of the players Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini drafted and signed and those were the players Rex was able to mold into a Championship level team.

I guess it looks bad because they fired him in the past and he's a bit goofy on ESPN - but what is the issue that you're seeing? The Jets are not the only team that has retained 33rd Team as consultants.

I mean this is one of the most innocuous events in a long line of bad process imo.

If they hire Rick Speilman as the GM, don't renew your season tickets.
It's Chris Spielman.
Yeah, I saw that this morning. That may be better.

But you want nothing to do with Rick.
I'm from Detroit. I don't want to see Chris go anywhere!

Anybody we can thieve from Detroit is somebody I would not mind having. Chris Spielman is also a stand-up guy and legend. He’s the guy that used to sit in his truck in winter to get ready for Buffalo cold. He’s that dedicated and nuts if I’m thinking of the right guy, and I believe that I am.

Definitely wanna fire that up if we can.

Fair enough - the guy who drafted Revis is as good a choice as any, eh.

When 88 year old widow Martha Firestone Ford had to hire a coach for the first time in her life (2914), she called the league & asked for help. They sent Ernie Accorsi (old Giants GM) as a consultant, which led to Jim Caldwell.

Great! Playoffs 2 of the first 3 years, higher win % than any of the 15 HC hires Me Ford made. Despite that, Bob Quinn convinced her 4 years later “9-7 isn’t good enough; we can’t beat the good teams.” 92 year old Martha said “Oh OK, you say this Patriots DC is good? Alright.”

When her daughter went through the process Dec 2020-Jan 2021, she leaned on former player. Chris Spielman a couple long time team executives. She knocked it out of the park in both hires.

@Joe Bryant

Aw, OK, thanks Joe (& @JohnnyU)

Im sure it had nothing to do with each other but I loved seeing the presser than Aaron Glenn completed his interview with the Jets an hour after it came out he refused to interview with the Pats - Glen/Spielman combo growing on me....

Jets complete interview with Mike Locksley.
I'm a Maryland fan and all I can ask is "why???". Why in the hell would they interview him? Does someone on the Jets owe Locksley a favor? It's not like he's guiding the Terps to 11 win seasons. If it's a Rooney Rule move, there are tons more qualified candidates than him. This one blows my mind.

Their first interview with Rivera satisfied the Rooney Rule.

I just don't understand it. He's a mediocre college coach with some less-than-stellar events in his past. There are 1,000s of people more qualified to coach an NFL team than Locksley.

Most likely internal favors being done. Someone from the 33rd Team is probably a Maryland alumnus, or was a teammate of the AD there or something like that. Helping a guy out by letting his name get thrown around here. They just did it with Rex too. Come one, come all. Organization is a laughingstock.

Price check on Mike Tomlin? What would you give? What would Pitt ask for?

I don't recall previous trades for coaches, but off the top of my head I think I'd be comfortable giving up a 3rd.

Last coach trade was Denver trading for Sean Payton, 2023 1st and 2024 2nd with the Saints giving back a 2024 3rd.

Wow. Definitely a fair comparison for a return Pitt would be looking for. That's too rich for us.

Agreed - I wouldnt trade that much - but Id consider a 2d and mid rder in a later yr. If Pitt is truly tired of him then maybe they take less - especially if Tomlin will only go to one place. He'd jump to the top of my list.

The coaching list is pretty uninspiring.
Former coach who hasnt had a job in the NFL in a decade, retread coach who failed with Dolphins (sound familiar), or another swing at an inspiring DC - not exactly what I was hoping for but seems like these are the choices.
