my understanding is they spoke to his team and they assured that he would play under the existing contract. I think he went back on his word. The Jets traded for him knowing full well that he wanted a new contract rather than play out the final year, no matter where he went. He wanted to get paid now. So if they weren’t planning on giving him a big new contract, why tf did they trade for him in the first place? They’re just as much to blame for this situation as he is.

That’s the team putting that out there to save face. Bad look for them and not likely to help in a negotiation.Where did you hear this? He wasn't willing to play under his existing contract in Philly, and dug his heels in for a big contract there until they traded him, why would he suddenly say "sure Jets, I'll play under the current contract". No way.
thats what the word was when they 1st traded for him - nothing official but my understanding was he was going to play and then when they traded JFM he had as change of heart - probably thinking Jets were desperate.Where did you hear this? Why trade for him then? He pushed his way out of Philly because he wanted a longer term and they wouldn’t give it.If we're being honest....I don't think the Jets had any intention of giving him a long term deal. I think they wanted a short term boost to the pass rush to cover the loss of Huff in the event that will McDonald isn't ready. They need to win this year (and he can obviously help there) and they're fine with letting him walk after this year for a compensatory pick (since they only gave up a 3rd rounder 2 years out to get him)
I think the plan all along was to throw him a bone with some better guarantees or performance bonuses or this year and then let him walk. They have to pay the 2022 draftees and that's gonna cost a TON.
No way JD trades for him without some assurance he would play - I truly believe he turned on his word which is why JD dropped the hammer so quick after he made the request. Reddick has no leverage. He can lose the year or his money - he'll kick and scream and miss preseason but he'll play at some point. He's over 30 and cant waste a prime season and not set himself up for a big deal for next year. Why trade for him then? Oh, he’ll play nice for the Jets though if they throw him a bone with some incentives? Yeah, right.
He’s 8th in sacks the last 5 years. His salary is 22nd amongst EDGE rushers in 2024.

Exactly. There's absolutely no way he wouldn't play for Philly under his contract but was happy to play for the Jets under the same contract. That’s the team putting that out there to save face. Can you show me a SINGLE thing on this? One link, one comment, anything where it was released (hell, even a rumour) that he was willing to play under the same contract in New York that he was unhappy with in Philly?thats what the word was when they 1st traded for him - nothing official but my understanding was he was going to play and then when they traded JFM he had as change of heart - probably thinking Jets were desperate.

That's pretty much it. I don't think the Jets intended to sign him to an extension. Too many contracts coming up. They probably agreed to do an upgrade to the contract for this year. I'm far from JD's biggest fan, but it's funny how everyone is piling on him for "screwing this up".
Reddick at his press conference after the trade:
"Whatever happens, I’m gonna be happy. I’m gonna give my all no matter what; that’s just who I am as a person. No matter how it goes, how many years, I’m gonna be here for however long I’m here for, and I’m going to give the team and the fans everything that I have,"
Interpret that how you like, but the most likely case was a change of heart by Reddick after he saw the upgraded contract not going how he liked. Much more likely than JD being a complete buffoon like everyone (with a bias) is implying. Reddick and his agent think they have leverage now. The fines are pretty light now. Wait until they have to miss gamec-hecks and lose a year of service. The Jets have 2 pass rushers now. If someone gets hurt, then yes Reddick has real leverage. I don't think he has any right now. He will have to come back at some point.
If he’s requesting a trade before ever playing a down I don’t know how you can say he (the Jets) didn’t screw it up? Either they didn’t know what his contract demands were (unlikely) or they just didn’t care because it’s only a 3rd round pick or conditional 2nd?No way JD trades for him without some assurance he would play - I truly believe he turned on his word which is why JD dropped the hammer so quick after he made the request. Sigh......here we go again
I think that’s it - he’s playing chicken with JD to get a better deal, but I have little doubt Reddick will cave. Unfortunately for the team, he’s missing valuable snaps to help solidify the defense even more.He has no leverage here IMO - he'll keep getting fined and if he doesnt show all year he will not be a FA next year.

So either way you're putting this on the Jets. JD made a move to get a quality pass rusher for little risk. A '26 3rd? C'mon now. Two things will happen...Either HR will play for the Jets this season (with a slightly better 1 year deal to offset monies lost), he'll most likely become a FA after the season, Jets will recoup a pick once he signs with a new team...OR...HR sits this season, he'll enter the '25 season, 1 year older with a missed season and a problem rep, with the same contract and we'll do this all over again. Howie isn't an idiot... he clearly traded the guy because he wasn't going to play under that contract and wanted a bigger deal. Either the Jets completely screwed this up by not even checking his contract demands before trading for him, or they messed this up by promising him something and then not going through with this.
Again, why do you think he was asking for a big contract with Philly, but suddenly "oh I get a chance to play for the new york jets? Sure, I'll do that without a big new contract, it's way better there than in Philly"
LOL you can't actually believe this.

One poster said he heard that HR told the Jets he was willing to play under his current contract, but there's not a single thing out there on this, and this would make absolutely zero sense for him to tell the Jets he would play for his same contract but tell the Eagles he wouldn't.
I'm not disagreeing that HR may cave, or that HR is hurting himself. I just have no idea why they didn't at least talk to his agent about his contract expectations before trading for him. Wait until they have to miss gamec-hecks and lose a year of service. The Jets have 2 pass rushers now. If someone gets hurt, then yes Reddick has real leverage. I don't think he has any right now. He will have to come back at some point.
One poster said he heard that HR told the Jets he was willing to play under his current contract, but there's not a single thing out there on this, and this would make absolutely zero sense for him to tell the Jets he would play for his same contract but tell the Eagles he wouldn't.
lol then why trade ANYTHING for him when it was extremely well known that he was dug in on getting a big contract? And I honestly believe HR was never considered a long term contract option. Too many more important pieces that are due in the next few years.
This was speculation on the Jets boards which seemed on par with Reddick's comments at the presser. Its not unfair to question JD but he has shown enough where im giving him the benefit of the doubt. I still think Reddick has no leverage and plays at some point. Whether it was worth it at the end of the day - maybe not with all the distraction but its not going to sink their season or anything. Regardless they need McDonald to step up.Again, why would you trade for a guy you KNEW was extremely unhappy with his contract and wanted a big new deal, and then not give him a big new deal?So either way you're putting this on the Jets. Either way, Jets are getting something out of it. Not gonna fault JD on this.lol you're joking right? You're believing a quote from a guy and refusing to think the Jets offered him something bigger? No way JD trades for him without some assurance he would play - I truly believe he turned on his word which is why JD dropped the hammer so quick after he made the request. Reddick has no leverage. He can lose the year or his money - he'll kick and scream and miss preseason but he'll play at some point. He's over 30 and cant waste a prime season and not set himself up for a big deal for next year. Why trade for him then?
Oh, he’ll play nice for the Jets though if they throw him a bone with some incentives? Yeah, right.
He’s 8th in sacks the last 5 years. His salary is 22nd amongst EDGE rushers in 2024.

I'm sure there were rough numbers tossed around. No way JD makes this move without that. I just think it's to the point where NO team will pay now for what he's asking. He can "want" all he wants, not gonna happen.I'm not disagreeing that HR may cave, or that HR is hurting himself. I just have no idea why they didn't at least talk to his agent about his contract expectations before trading for him. That seems pretty.... basic. And important. And I'm gonna ask, Why not? High reward, low risk. Maybe he's just asking for way too much, I'm sure he increased his asking price from when he was first traded. End of the day, HR needs the Jets more than the Jets needs him. Is HR hurting the Jets or himself? That's the real question. Absolutely no reason for JD to blink.Again, why would you trade for a guy you KNEW was extremely unhappy with his contract and wanted a big new deal, and then not give him a big new deal?So either way you're putting this on the Jets. The fact that a GM with a good track record, traded him for so little draft capital, is a pretty obvious sign that it was well known HR wanted to get paid, and get paid big.
Like I said before, the reward is/was much greater than the risk. A 3rd 2 seasons from now? JD will find some more picks by then. Plus, the Jets won't left empty handed when all of this is over.lol then why trade ANYTHING for him when it was extremely well known that he was dug in on getting a big contract? And I honestly believe HR was never considered a long term contract option. Agree... he was asking for WAY too much money from Philly, which is why they got rid of him for anything they could get back. They knew his contract demands were ridiculously high.I'm sure there were rough numbers tossed around. No way JD makes this move without that. I just think it's to the point where NO team will pay now for what he's asking. He can "want" all he wants, not gonna happen.
Well, it's a 2nd if he hit 10 sacks which is surely what you're expecting him to do.Like I said before, the reward is/was much greater than the risk. A 3rd 2 seasons from now? He also needs to play 67.5% of the snaps for the 3rd to become a 2nd. Jets like to rotate their DL thoughWell, it's a 2nd if he hit 10 sacks which is surely what you're expecting him to do.Like I said before, the reward is/was much greater than the risk. At this point I'm just thrilled any team gave Philly any picks for a guy they knew they were going to have to pay big money to make happy.
pretty much a JAG from what I remember - few plays here and there. depth guyAnyone remember Javelin Guidry? DB/KR who ran a 4.29 at the combine 4 years ago, spent a few seasons with the Jets. Lions signed him today, just wondering if any Gang Green fans have intel.
Looks like you're gonna be busy in the Atlanta thread now ...Seriously though, has there been any info on what contracts have been offered as far as "fair market value"?Reddick situation getting interesting for sure. Those saying he planned to play his final season of his contract...
Feb 13th says: "I would like to get an extension done here at home (Philadelphia). This is home for me. I was born and raised here. Two of the most fun years playing football in my life came here. I’ve cherished being an Eagle." ... clearly he wants an extension.
It has been reported that Haason was told the Jets would negotiate a fair market value new contract for him.... ...jets said they would negotiate a fair deal with him, give up picks knowing that they need to give him a big new contract.
Reddick arrives in New York, says all the right things to the media, and the Jets decide to NOT give him a big new contract.
This is on your GM. That's just brutal if he couldn't see this coming.
We dont know exactly what representations were made - it is what it is. I still think he plays this season with some guarantees and incentives to his current contract. I dont see a 30 yr old wasting a full year - and if he tries to wait it out until week 11 I think he loses money on his next deal. He'll likely sit out all of the preseason, maybe a game or 2 before showing up. If not, so be it. Its a lost 3rd with a comp pick coming back.Reddick situation getting interesting for sure. Those saying he planned to play his final season of his contract...

I don't disagree with you that HR is going to be the biggest loser in this whole thing if he continues to sit out. I do think he's dug in more than you think though on his contract demands, but yes it would likely not be smart of him to sit out and lose a season or get fined. We dont know exactly what representations were made - it is what it is. Quite frankly the Jets have bigger fish to fry trying to keep Rodgers healthy and upright! Saleh will have the defense competitive as always with or without Reddick.
Atlanta traded for Judon without a deal in place. Why Atlanta?! I doubt we will hear what he was offered, just saying that he clearly wanted a new deal, and he seems to have been told he would get one. Some posters saying the plan was never to re-sign him and never promised him that when it's pretty clear that happened.
My guess is the Jets told him they'd give him an extension, but failed to discuss hard numbers with him and realized now that his salary expectation was much higher than they were willing to give. You'd think those numbers would be tossed around before giving up draft capital for a guy.
thats what the word was when they 1st traded for him - nothing official but my understanding was he was going to play and then when they traded JFM he had as change of heart - probably thinking Jets were desperate.Where did you hear this? That would absolutely shock me.my understanding is they spoke to his team and they assured that he would play under the existing contract.
He wasn't willing to play under his existing contract in Philly, and dug his heels in for a big contract there until they traded him, why would he suddenly say "sure Jets, I'll play under the current contract". No way.
He has no leverage here IMO - he'll keep getting fined and if he doesnt show all year he will not be a FA next year. If he waits until week 11 no team will pay big money to a 30+yr old who hasnt played all season. This is a hail Mary by his agent to get him paid and I dont think JD will budge. Im expecting a save your face deal right before the season starts where he'll get a small bump to cover the fines, guarantee his salary for the yr with some incentives added. Zero chance JD gives him a long term deal with having to pay Sauce, JJ, Hall. Gwill. gotta hope will McDonald steps up fast!
Welcome back, GB!I see we still get some annoying pests in here - but I'll be back in this thread for a while and some of the music threads in FFA. This will be the only thread I check out in the Shark Cesspool though.
Agree, and it's not who you think it is.Actually after reading this thread for just three minutes I may have to leave again.
Some people just have no self-awareness.
I think even with Rodgers, the Jets will be running the ball a lot.Braelon Allen has been looking great. I think he carves out more than just a handcuff role. Can see meaningful reps as well as a shot to take over if Breece asks for a ton. Very young as well - grabbed him in a few dynasty leagues as late as mid 4th rd. People seem to think hes just a cuff - take advantage.
It'll be nice to get back to this style of play, as that's really the only sustained successful offensive style we've been able to employ at any point this century. Hopefully the O line can hold up accordingly. Also should keep the D/pass rush fresh to create havoc, vs running on fumes late in games a la the last what - 5 years?Isaiah Davis looking good again even playing with a rookie QB. This RB room is deep. I think this could be a pound and ground-lite offense this season. No need to push Rodgers or put him at risk if the defense can be top 5 and the running game can take over and wear defenses down.
Obviously Rodgers and Wilson will also be a big part of the offense - but it’s not going to be fireworks.
